The Point Four-ward: One and (Not) Done
2015-05-06Four points I’m thinking about the Cleveland Cavaliers…
1.) Well, that sure wasn’t fun.
Cavs fans knew their team had some things to overcome in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference Semi-Finals matchup with the Chicago Bulls. Besides missing two starters in Kevin Love (shoulder) and J.R. Smith (poor decisions), the Cavs had accumulated the rust of the eight days that had passed since they last laced up for a game.
The Bulls, meanwhile, were coming off an historic 54-point demolition of the Milwaukee Bucks, finally finishing off that series in six games after leading it 3-0. While many have touted the Bulls as “finally clicking” or “getting healthy at the right time,” that might be a bit of an overstatement. Joakim Noah has battled knee and hamstring issues all year and was clearly limited in Game 1, failing to score on 0-4 shooting, though he was able to tally nine boards and four assists. Nikola Mirotic saw only two minutes of action, after being bothered by quad and knee issues during the Milwaukee series. And Derrick Rose isn’t exactly back if his shooting drops off from 56.1% from the floor when he gets two or more days rest to 42% when he plays with only one day off.
Still, the Bulls were the more fully lubricated machine on this night. The Cavs seemed completely out of sorts following the insertion of Mike Miller and Iman Shumpert into the starting lineup, and the Bulls rode a hot shooting streak that punished the Cavs for every defensive breakdown.
The Cavaliers gave up huge runs in the first, when Mike Dunleavy scored 13 of his 14 points, and then in the third, when Pau Gasol fed on a steady diet of uncontested jumpers from the elbow. In the end, it was those two spurts that proved the difference in the game. The Bulls were able to push their lead when they needed to. The Cavs, meanwhile, were never able to even take one.
2.) Rose scored 25 points on 11-26 shooting (42%) having had three full days off following the Bulls win Thursday night win in Milwaukee. But he shot an uncharacteristic 50% (3-6) from beyond the arc and those type of shots are the ones the Cavs have to hope stop falling when they meet on Wednesday night for Game 2 and Rose will be playing on only one day off.
In fact, “the Bulls can’t possibly play this well again” refrain sounded loudly through the corridors of the Hall of Cavs Fandom. While probability suggests that this reasoning/rationalization may very well be the case, it’s also not dissimilar to the way Cavs fans reacted when the Orlando Magic nailed 45% of their three point attempts in Game 1 of the 2009 Eastern Conference Finals. “They won’t shoot that well all series long,” the rational Cavs fan protested (too much?).
Technically, that was true. They never shot 45% again. But, the Magic were able to manage games that came very close to that — game of 43.5%, 44.7% and 41.4% shooting from deep — on their way to bouncing the Cavs in six games.
This is the playoffs. Cavs fans can’t pray for probability to come in and be the great leveler. They already have a Great Leveler who they pray to — he wears number 23 — and he’ll have to play much better if the Cavs are going to survive this series.
3.) It was good to hear James being accountable for not playing the type of game the Cavs needed him to play in order to win. According to ESPN, this was the first time in 85 home playoff games that a LeBron James-led team failed to hold a lead at any point in the game.
“I have to be better,” James said, following a 19 point, 15 rebound, 9 assist performance that, at times, seemed unfocused and somewhat… well, chill. “I wasn’t that good.”
Early in the game, there were even a couple of times when James never even made it into frame on the offensive end before the Cavs chucked up their latest in a quarter’s worth of never-had-a-chance shots.
I thought it had to be a mistake. Clearly, there was something wrong with the television. James couldn’t possibly be hanging so far back on offense that he wasn’t even on screen, let alone included in the action before some other Cav (not named Kyrie Irving) decided, “Um, how about I try this?” Stupid television, I thought.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t the television. James played a passive game and came up with a missed shot and two big turnovers late in the fourth quarter when what the Cavs needed was for their best player to push them over the top. In what could be the understatement of the year: how James responds in Game 2 will be huge for the Cavs.
4.) Game 1 wasn’t completely without its silver linings, though. Matthew Dellavedova was active defensively and looked like he could give the Cavs some good minutes in this series. Of the new starters, Shumpert’s play, at least on offense, was encouraging. He finished with 22 points on 8-17 from the floor (4-10 from three) and made a handful of plays off the dribble that dove right into the heart of the Bulls defense. While his offensive focus looked like it took a bit of his edge away on the defensive end, it was encouraging to see Shump give the Cavs a third viable option after Irving and James. If he can keep some of this mojo going when Smith returns from suspension, the Cavs will be that much more difficult to guard.

That has to be in the top 10 list of weirdest promotions ever (outside the minor leagues).
Ugh traffic in Cleveland is awful right now.
Someone else has noticed Le-Iso :http://espn.go.com/nba/insider/story/_/id/12832033/lebron-iso-heavy-play-leads-worst-postseason-start-nba
Bron needs to defer to Ky on offense. He should focus more on shutting down that Rose-Gasol PNR
Oops, believeLAND you beat me to it
This drives up the freakin wall, man.

Haberstroh lives in Miami Beach. He’s consistently taken shots at the Cavs this year. The math does itself…
Hate + doubters = Fuel
This game cannot come soon enough. I keep looking at the clock and thinking “how have only 12 minutes passed?”
I think perhaps Kyrie Irving will be open for a lot more threes tonight if Lebron can draw enough double teams from Thibs. That could spell doom for the Bulls.
With that starting lineup, this game won’t be about offense, it will be about defense. Tristan’s ability to cover shooters and guards has been outstanding this year. I still worry about Gasol shooting over him (Tristan’s always had a problem with bigs with range, but it’s much improved this year), but Gasol won’t be standing with no one within 20 feet of him. The TT start is all about defense. It lets him match-up on Gasol and lets Mozzy be more of a rover on D, since you don’t have to worry about Noah’s scoring nearly as much as his… Read more »
This is great foresight, nate. I was thinking the same thing.
I’m totally prepared for the LeIso show tonight. We’ve commented–and justifiably so–about the sustainability of isolation ball to win playoff games. For THIS playoff game, if LeBron doesn’t take 25 shots and run a dude over, we’re probably going to lose. He’s so good in revenge games. Bulls want us to play a clogged toilet offense? We’re going to force them to play one too, and we have two plungers and one of them is upset.
“Bulls want us to play a clogged toilet offense? We’re going to force them to play one too, and we have two plungers and one of them is upset.”
Vengeful LeBron being compared to an upset plunger is possibly the greatest thing I’ve ever read.
Bulls gonna get LeFlushed!!
I agree. I laughed heartily while reading this IN A MEETING. So thanks for that Merka.
I don’t think Joe Harris is on the playoff roster. Does anyone know who is and who is not? I think Love is still on the 12 man playoff roster, which is an insane rule.
I think he’s eligible for the playoffs because he was on the regular roster. Whether or not he’s active is a different story. Although, teams are allowed to dress 13 players, and with Andy and Kevin out, they only have 13 healthy players. Given that, I’d assume he’s on the playoff roster and available.
Where is Ray Ray!???????????????????????????????????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Enjoying his retirement.
With Hans Gruber… sitting on a beach, earning 20 percent…
I am surprised we don’t see James Jones start. One of the shocking things to me about G1 was how useless Noah has become on offense. If we start JJ, LBJ can hide on Noah and JJ can chase Dunleavy. And we still have spacing.
I worry with TT and Mozzy the O will again start slow.
I was thinking Klove and Andy.
Cavs take next 2 and pressure goes right back to the Bulls which they won’t handle well at all. Every time Lebron take accountability for a loss he delivers next game and beyond. Go Cavs
Do you know who would be amazing to have right now? Ray Freaking Allen.
Yeah he would help. Especially with JR out.
But you have no idea if Ray can still play.
I think we know enough to slot him in place of mike miller
Draymond Greene really seems like an A-hole. Screw that guy. I mean it’s one thing to hustle like crazy, it’s another to be a complete penis on the basketball court. He needs to grow the eph up.
What did he do?
Tried to take out Conley. Plus if you watch him he’s always flopping or getting in a cheap shot. Just an ugly player to watch. I hate guys like that.
I don’t think he tried to hurt Conley. I saw that play and he was just going after the ball. I’d love to have Green in this team. I’d take him over Ray Allen too!!!!
I wouldn’t. I don’t like dirty players or flop artists.
Haha okay… I don’t think he’s dirty or a flop artist. But I don’t watch all of GS games.
Yeah, if the ball was Conley’s head… He clearly took a shot at Conley’s face well after he called (and was granted) a time out. Green is a dirty player and a fake tough guy. He’s a dick and ZBo is probably going to put the hurt on him at some point this series…
Cols stop hijacking EGs profile.
That’s funny!
But seriously, I’ve watched a lot of GSW games this year, and this is Draymond’s M.O. He thinks he’s the “enforcer” for the Warriors, but he goes about it in the wrong way…
I think one of the biggest takeaways from game one is that James Jones can do enough against Noah on the defensive end. He is too good of a shooter to continually miss the wide open looks that he is getting on the other end. If he can just hit a couple big threes in his limited minutes, the game changes.
Kyrie is officially afraid of no moment. That kid has some serious chutzpah. I love it.
Agree… JFJ is due to make some. He is 0-10 since going 3-5 in the first game against Boston…
You’re right, Ben. If James Jones can do a reasonably good job against Noah, he should be getting minutes and shots because AT SOME POINT they will start dropping. Who would have ever thought that James Jones’s defense would be something we’d be talking about as a good thing?
Great point on JFJ.
I think Kyrie continues to work the Bulls tonight, wearing Rose down(I just hope that TT and Moz don’t clog it up to much…). If we make it through to the ECF or Finals, Kyrie is actually gonna be the story. Best contract in the league.
Oh, and look for some strong D tonight and points in transition.
Yeah I would prefer to start Jones over Thompson.
James Jones’s shot has been so inconsistent for such a long time now. He, Mike Miller, and Shawn Marion have been huge disappointments this season on the court. But was probably expecting too much from them at this stage in their careers in the first place.
They are all just good for being cheerleaders.
I’m not exactly sure what you were expecting from them. Jones has been a deep bench player for years. Miller was one of the league’s worst defenders last year, and Marion looked completely DONE in last year’s playoffs. I’ve actually been pleasantly surprised at the moments Jones and Marion were able to contribute this year.
I guess I expected them to be rotation players, who could bring three point shooting off the bench in Miller and Jones. Marion a body to be physical with at the 3/4.
But nope, ……my honest mistake.
I’ll be at tonight’s game. I think this is must win. If the CAVS lose I see the Bulls winning this series in 6.
Bring the #CtBKarma Arch!
Or, the Cavs in 6 or more!
It will obviously be a bummer if the Cavs lose tonight, but not the end of the story. For one thing, the Cavs can get lucky in Chicago in a lot of ways. Maybe JR will go 9 for 11 from long, maybe KI will score 60, … . It is no fun to be in the “need a miracle” zone, but it is exciting.
I hope you can bring the noise for game two! Cavs fans have been way below the norm here. Give em hell if people are just being passive. Have our blue collar roots turned white?
Nice! Send some pics to CtB to post in the win recap.
As tough as it was to lose Game 1, along with the accompanying home court advantage, it served as another “first” or milestone for these (mostly) young Cavs. Though Love obviously wasn’t there to experience it, guys like Kyrie, TT, Delly and (to a large degree) Moz got to go through their first playoff loss. Now they get the chance to show how they respond to that experience. Teams don’t just sweep their way through the post-season. It’s all part of the learning process for half of these guys. The good news is that LeBron has been here before. He… Read more »
Yep. By the end of today all the 2nd round series will be tied 1-1.
Still going to be ATL-CLE
GSW-LAC
GSW-CLE
GSW 70% chance of winning that series
Right on! I am also looking for the Silver Lining aspect. If the Cavs are going to make some noise this year, they have to be able to play with some adversity and high pressure. They might as well start with tonight.
We should win tonight. I’m guessing LeBron makes a couple of those wide open threes he missed. Or Kyrie makes a couple off the dribble jumpers he missed. That’s really all that cost us the game. A couple of shots that dudes usually make.
Cavs in 6
Or we don’t give Dunleavy and Gasol wide open looks?
If we give up another Pau Gasol open 16 footer, Blatt needs to put his boot in someone’s rear. The Bulls offense has struggled game to game but pau Gasol will make those shots until the sun goes cold. We can’t give the Bulls a go-to play.
So if Thompson starts (as is being reported), does Miller come off the bench?
Nope, starters will just play 48 minutes tonight… ;)
Actually though, I’m only slightly kidding… I’d put money on LBJ, Kyrie, Shump and TT playing 42-44 mins tonight. Moz will be the only “starter” in the 30s. We’ll probably see 5-10 mins of Delly as well as 10 minutes combined of JFJ and Matrix. Slim chance either Miller or Perk sees the floor (barring foul trouble or garbage time).
Why would Mike Miller get any time at all? He has not seen any meaningful minutes for months and had only one good game all year. I’m a huge supporter of Blatt but Miller starting was such a confounding move and in my mind was the biggest reason for the loss. Miller can not play any meaningful minutes ever again. He is done as an effective player in the NBA. It would be smart on the Cavs behalf to make Game 1 the last game he ever plays in a Cavs jersey. Would still love to have him around as… Read more »
Miller has a good history. He was good last year. In the past he came from nowhere to help the Heat win a couple of titles. It was an OK gamble. That’s not why we lost though.
We lost because Kyrie missed a few jumpers he normally makes and James missed a few wide open threes he normally makes.
The team was -20 in the 16 minutes he played, but that’s not why the team lost…
