[BREAKING NEWS]: LeBron James to Re-sign
2015-07-09ESPN’s Chris Broussard still had enough energy after his hilarious Twitter beef with Mavericks owner, Mark Cuban, to break the news that LeBron James will re-sign with the Cavaliers for two-years, with a player option for the second season. The timing was impeccable.
Agent Rich Paul notifies Cavs , Lebron will sign on the 1st available signing day of free agency; details of the contract to follow
— Chris Broussard (@Chris_Broussard) July 9, 2015
Agent Rich Paul tells Cavs today LeBron will sign 2 yr deal with player option for 2nd year. $22.97 million 1st season, $24 mill 2nd year
— Chris Broussard (@Chris_Broussard) July 9, 2015
With James officially on board, J.R. Smith, Matthew Dellavedova and Tristan Thompson are the only remaining key free agents the Cavs must come to terms with to return their core from last season’s Finals squad. With James under contract before Thompson, the speculation than James and Rich Paul were holding the franchise hostage to get a bigger contract for Thompson will probably come under fire. Perhaps it was true. Things change and we, as fans, certainly overanalyze everything this time of year.

Even with the salary cap and luxury tax bumps, to $70 million and $84.7 million respectively, Dan Gilbert could pay almost as much in luxury taxes as Cedar Fair paid to purchase 700 acres of Geauga Lake ($145 million).

@ESPNSteinLine reporting that Deron Williams wants his release from the #Nets so he can sign with the #Mavericks.
This is completely off-topic, but how long until Steve Nash is a coach somewhere? I wouldn’t mind scooping him up early. Seems like he’d make a great coach.
It doesn’t seem like this Haywood contract is making progress any where….
Some analyst saying since the cap is increased that it will be more difficult. Only a select couple of teams would be interested but not desperate. I bet Cavs wind up going the trade exception route.
We still have a few weeks. It is probably smart to hold out for the best deal. For example, the Cavs draft day trade was made 13+ minutes in to a 15 minute window. Who knows how many other offers they went through in that first 13.
That trade might wind up being an all time great for the late first round.
The excitement has certainly fizzled.
I’m okay if they don’t use it. It probably comes down to whether or not JRS is back.
I think it just comes down to whether they get offered a player that will make the team. If its not someone who will make a different in the playoffs or is a valuable young guy with potential, they’ll probably just throw a second rounder to somebody for the exception.
I don’t fully understand trade exceptions, if someone could explain?
I am no expert, and it’s complicated. It basically allows a capped team to still make moves. Danny LeRoux from RealGM has a good article about it here (as I said, it’s complicated):
http://midlevelexceptional.com/2014/07/03/nba-salary-cap-trade-exception/
Read the article, still don’t understand haha. Sigh, the ever-elusive trade exception.
The idea of salaries matching in trades only applies to teams that are over the salary cap – if you have room under the cap, you can take player in a trade without having to send out a player of matching salary. When that happens, the team that trades the player away – in this case, Cleveland – gets what’s called a trade exception. the exception is for the amount of salary you traded away. You then have that “space” to take in another player at a later date. Essentially, its a way to do the first part of a… Read more »
Good explanation. A lot of the Cap stuff requires an ‘explain it like I’m 5’ approach, and your answer makes it more understandable to me.
Eric Griffin anybody? Supposed to have a good shot at landing an NBA roster spot.
He’s going to make it on somebody’s team. I kinda hope he makes it. We could use the SF depth.
Throw Back Thursday To A Great Player Tribune Article by Our Own Klove
http://www.theplayerstribune.com/how-i-spent-my-summer-vacation/
Really is a nice read especially after his other article and interview this year.
This really is a great read. Everything Kevin Love has done leads me to believe he is exactly the type of man and player we want on this team for the next 5 years while we look to win every single one. Despite the pressure and bright lights, he always said the right thing then backed his words up as soon as he could. Bright skies ahead for the Cavaliers.
NBA Rumor: Cavs Targeting SF Robbie Hummel
http://kingjamesgospel.com/2015/07/09/nba-rumor-cavs-targeting-sf-robbie-hummel/
Yeah I know nothing about this player.
Is that the guy from Purdue? Bunch of knee issues?
That’s him. I think it would be a pretty decent pickup, honestly. I can tell you the Canis guys like him.
He’s a shooter…. can never have enough shooters for LBJ and Kyrie! He’s young too, who seems to have recovered from his multiple(?) knee injuries.
I also like Babbitt from NOP… awesome shooter, plays backup SF. Probably too expensive, but similar game to Hummel.
Pelicans resigned Babbitt today I think…
Dang… figures. Thanks for the update, EG. I appreciate it, Way to stay on top of it! HAHA! C:tB is required internet reading!
BTW Loved that Fred McLeod tweet! He’s really grown on me. Really positive guy, not big of a homer in an annoying way. Calls a fair game.
TV63 found this… Good news for fans of hustle… bad news for Cols…
Man You’re fast!! LoL I just love this!! His grit and hustle made such a difference they want to track!! This will really demonstrate why he and others like him will have remarkable +/- stat.
We aim to please!
THANK YOU EG!!! LOVE THIS NEWS!!! Joe Harris owes me for being the sole member of his fan club HAHAHAHA!!! Smokin’ Joe needs to be gunning to be JR’s/Miller’s replacement.
CAVS SUMMER LEAGUE STARTS ON FRIDAY—-WILL SEE ” CHRISTMAS IN JULY ” HOPE WE WITNESS THE POTENTIAL THAT HE MAY ADD TO THE ROSTER
Cavs Summer League Roster:
http://www.nba.com/cavaliers/releases/summer-league-roster-2015
Marc Stein: ESPN sources say Mavericks are closing in on acquisition of Zaza Pachulia from Milwaukee via trade and take him into their cap space
Jared Zwerling: Source: The Heat and Amar’e Stoudemire are closing in on a deal. Could be finalized tomorrow. Terms still not determined.
Sean Deveney: Free-agent F Jordan Hill will sign with the Indiana @Indiana Pacers source tells Sporting News
Big winner in the Deandre Fiasco ? Wes Matthews getting an extra 13 million.
David Aldridge: With DeAndre Jordan going back to the Clippers, Wes Matthews’s deal with Dallas goes from 4/$57M to a max deal: 4 years, $70M, per source. – via Twitter daldridgetnt
That has to be potentially the worst contract from this free agency. Matthews may not even be able to play at the NBA level. I hope he comes back close to 100%, but who knows with that injury.
Yeah, if I’m Dallas I wouldn’t be doling out 4 years to anyone other than proven stars. They can’t compete in the West this year. As much as I respect Cuban for refusing to tank, that’s the right play for them this year. They lose their first if its out of the top 7 or 8, I think. They ought to blow it up, trade Dirk if Dirk wants to go to a contender, shoot for a high draft pick. Then they can go crazy during the summer of Durant and the following summer with the Cap exploding.
Just saw an article about how Karl and Cousins hate each other. So please discuss the following completely unlikely scenario:
TT and Mozgov for Cousins.
We’d have to, right?
It’s never ever going to happen. But looks like a no brainer on paper, even though I don’t like Cousins at all, and he seems to be widely disliked by many other players. I’m fine with keeping Moz and TT.
I agree with MikeO. Two good, solid, reliable, proven bigs that we know can get us to the finals vs one talented but very risky big with a history of questionable attitude issues. Seems like a no brainer that we don’t do it.
I think Mike O was saying it looks like a no brainer to take cousins, but he wasn’t sure about his Head-casery. But Cousin’s is a superior player to either Moz or TT.
Yeah, pretty much. I also think historically those surly, moody, douchey players who are good are a bit overrated, and their disruptiveness to team is understated. Kareem was probably the best of thos guys, but he was way better than Cousins. From what I know about Cousins, I don’t particularly want him on a team I root for, no matter how good he is.
Don’t fall into the “the more all-stars we add, the better we’ll be” trap. This isn’t NBA2k. You need guys willing to sacrifice numbers to do the little things to win- like Mozzy & TT. If you put Cousins on the floor with Love & Kyrie, you throw defense out the window.
Now that is probably true. But you’d be tempted, right?
Not at all, Joey. Zero. Zilch. Nadda.
The current Cavs are one of the best teams ever assembled. You would trade the 4th and 5th best players, both hard working, team players (and TT is LeBron’s Pal) for one head case who destroys teams and has never made it to the playoffs? You must be off your meds.
Lakers could get better offers, and Moz and TT fit this team better than Cousins. Guys knowing, and accepting their roles is important.

LOVE IT! Almost as good as the LeBron Dumb & Dumber one….. classic
They should add Mo following them on a skateboard!
LeBron signing without TT signed is yet another blot for Windy and ESPN, who wrote a story just last week that the opposite would happen. Seriously, ESPN has like the worst Cavs knowledge ever. It is getting kind of crazy how they are always dead wrong.
McMenimin aint’ bad.
True. But he actually follows the team and knows what’s actually happening. Its Stein, Windy, Stepen A that just make up narratives.
The rumors and unnamed sources have always been wrong. It happens year after year at the trade deadline, the draft, and the free agent signing period. Read it, but don’t believe it.
I’ll remind you all again at the trade deadline . . . but I think that most have learned by now.
Anyone interested in taking a flyer on Baron Davis as a backup PG? He’s killing it in the Drew league.
Is Larry Sanders playing as rumored? I’d take a flyer on that dude.
Id rather have Delly and Mo
Does the return of DAJ to the Clips have an impact on our chances to trade (using at least the BHC) for a very good player? Still seem to need a good SF to give Lebron plenty of rest. Thoughts?
Starting to get tough. The extra cap room everyone got gave each team some breathing room. Maybe the Suns, but I’m doubting it now. Swaggy P maybe. Think it gets traded for an exception to be used later.
Cuban could make it very interesting.
I agree. The Nets seem very motivated to save money…and Joe Johnson’s departure and getting our BHC would help with that.
Wonder if what the prime holdup was/is? trading Andy? JJ’s big contract? other?
I agree about Cuban, but also wanted to mention the Nets and their desire to save some big money.
A steel cage match I meant! Stupid phone!
hahahaha, sorry, jumped the gun on the prior one!
must be the blasted auto correct. mine gets me often. plus i rarely proofread. now if this were with pen and paper, i would proof it like a champ
Yeah I usually post on my phone because my work computer won’t let me for some reason.
I want to see a steal cage match between Cuban and Broussard.
I don’t agree with theft, so it can be a bought cage match.
I’d take Cuban. When in doubt, bet on whoever is crazier in a fight.
This still boggles my brain…
Does Duncan live in a shack with no dependents? He losses $20 million to his investment advisor and now takes another pay cut?
Oops *adviser…………..
somewhere in san antonio there are bodies. either duncan or pop knows and they will be compesnated with a tell all book once the big fundamental retires. the spurs are king midas when it comes to the salary cap
Duncan probably has a pile of money. He actually might want to win another ring more than make a bigger pile. I say, good for you, Tim! Don’t be surprised if LeBron does the same thing when he nears 40.
Hey Mallory, have you listened to Waxahatchee’s “Ivy Tripp” album?? It’s great and I think it’s right down your alley.
@mcuban: @Chris_Broussard how about this. You post any proof I was calling/texting his friends asking anything I give 100k to charity of yr choice.
Sauces can’t make proof Mark. Sauces make pizza!
Wait, I’m confused… wasn’t the Draymond deal supposedly for 5 years and $85M?
I don’t think I dislike a player more than Green. Overrated, got away with fouling and complaining on every possession in the Finals and even then sort of sucked.
Yuck.
He sucked his way into $82 million. Buckets!
Agree. Completely unimpressed by him in Finals. Cavs totally exposed his weaknesses. His whole game revolves around being left completely wide open because Curry is doubled. Seems like lots of guys could do what he is does for a lot less money.
He’s my least favorite player in the NBA. I can’t wait for the Cavs to wipe that sh**-eating grin off his face in a Finals sweep next year.
The craziness continues…
@ZachLowe_NBA: OKC will likely match, + then look to deal Novak/Augustin/PJII for $0. But POR is forcing their hand. Lots of teams were rooting for this.
The CONTRACT!
I wouldn’t mind those dudes.
Novak is as one dimensional as it gets. PJIII can’t stay healthy and isn’t that good when he is. And Augustin is an undersized guard who would be the team’s fourth point guard.
Novak/Augustin/PJIII is a turd sandwich if I ever saw one. They’re going to have to give up some assets to get someone to take them.
How about Jeremy Lamb?
Lamb’s already in Charlotte.
Or Mitch McGary? Although we don’t need another PF.
Yes we do. I don’t get the we don’t need another big drum people are banging.
If/when TT signs, we will have only one big not coming off surgery. AV, when healthy last year, was clearly declining. K Love had major surgery. Christmas is a rookie not likely to be good enough to crack the rotation. and Moz just had surgery as well. We need another big if we want to survive any injuries.
Those guys aren’t terrible and may be all we can get for Haywood – we don’t know what offers are out there since very few teams really need any cap relief. Novak can hit threes. That’s a useful bench skill. Augustin can play the point and score a little. He’s basically a slightly worse shooter/slightly better defender Mo Williams. Not useless if KI goes down again. and PJIII, if ever healthy again, is a young big with potential. This team can use cheap, young talent to bring along to see if it proves useful as anything. If that’s all we… Read more »
Cavs would be better off moving it for an exception to be used later. I actually like Novak, but I haven’t seen him play in over two years. I have few hopes he’d be better than James Jones.
Perry Jones is AWFUL: one of the worst players in the NBA last year. He had a not terrible season in ’13-’14, but last year he had 46TS%, a 6.9 PER, and was ranked 465th out of 474 in RPM.
D.J. was similarly terrible.
Maybe they’ll give us Dion back. :o
Dion and SirDion would be so confusing. Waiters would think he’d been knighted.
The return of Saint Weirdo would be welcome.
I would actually like Perry Jones. I’ve always been intrigued by his length and athleticism. Could be a fun project.

Because LeBron James has full bird rights now. He will be eligible for a possible 5 year/204m contract in 2017-18. 1st year, $35.6m.
Good. Pay the man,
Yeah, technically he won’t have his bird rights till after next year.
So, do you offer a 5 year max like that to a 33 year old?
Yes, without question…
Yes. When those are the terms that are required to sign the best player on earth who is just barely past his prime, is a basketball savant, and brings with him championship hopes every season and good free agents? Yes. You sign and if he sucks years 3, 4, and 5 you eat it and be thankful you have, hopefully, a ring or four.
And he’ll only be 32. FWIW.
We’ll find out in two years!
Wrong.
The only answer is yes. If James is healthy he gets the max.
Your “if” is bigger than your “only.”
Nope. James has been incredibly durable during his career. He’s got longevity like Karl Malone had. There’s absolutely no reason to think he’d be injured in 2 years.
YES
Of course you do when it’s LeBron James.
Doubt you want to pay Lebron 40 million when he’s 37.
Good for LbJ – not holding us hostage over TT
And in other news … the night sky will be black tonight, contrary to early reports from Brian Windhorst.
