Live Thread: Cavs vs. Hawks (Pre-Season)
2015-10-07In the new TNT spot that dropped today, the network went heavy on the metaphors as they depicted LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love (with an assist from comedian Mike Epps and a camel) wandering through the desert on an epic quest to end the championship drought in the ‘Land. Tonight, that quest begins (somewhat) in earnest as the Cavs kick off the pre-season with a “home” game in Cincinnati against last year’s ECF opponent Atlanta Hawks.
Tip off is at 7:00 pm (EST) at Xavier University’s Cintas Center. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Ohio and NBATV, and broadcast on WTAM 1100 AM.
Sadly, we’ll have to wait a bit to see two of the three title-seekers above in game action, as neither Kyrie nor Kevin made the two day journey to Xavier and Philadelphia to play the Sixers. And, while there is no clear timetable for the return of Moses Cleveland, there are optimistic reports that KLove will start full practices as soon as this weekend, and could be in the starting lineup for opening night. In the meantime, LeBron may just have to carry the load on his own… even though he says otherwise.
So, with the Cavs down three starters (including Iman Shumpert) and their MIA backup PF (he who must not be named… or depicted), the team reportedly will go with this starting lineup:
PG – Mo Williams, SG – J.R. Smith, SF – LeBron James, PF – James Jones, C – Timofey Mozgov
As with the Wine & Gold Scrimmage on Monday, we will likely get a heavy dose of all of the young, athletic camp invitees who are all in a full-on scrum for the last seat on the bench (and possibly the 14th as well due to injuries and the holdout). So, get ready to see if guys like Quinn Cook, Austin Daye, Jared Cunningham, D.J. Stephens, Nick Minnerath and Michael Dunigan can do enough to nail their audition to wear a suit and take a lot of bus rides to Canton (or even unseat second-year man Smokin Joe Harris).
On the Hawks side of the ball, there a couple of new faces the Cavs will see, including former Spur big man, Tiago Splitter, and former Knicks swing man, Tim Hardaway, Jr. Gone is former defensive specialist, DeMarre Carroll (Raptors), and it remains to be seen if any of the Hawks’ injured rotation players (Kyle Korver, Thabo Sefalosha and Shelvin Mack) will be able to participate in tonight’s action. Their starting lineup, though, is listed as:
PG – Jeff Teague, SG – Kyle Korver, SF – Tim Hardaway Jr., PF – Paul Millsap, C – Al Horford
If Korver does suit up, it will mean his first action on the court this season could possibly be against the man who ended his season last year… Delly. And, even though it’s just a pre-season matchup, there’s at least a decent chance that there will be plenty of friction between these two teams leftover from their playoff matchup.
It’s all worthy of hype, not just from the creative folks at TNT, but also from our friends at Nike. Not to be outdone by the Quest spot, the swooshy ones dropped this ad about The Akronite: LeBron James, as read by poet and playwrite, Lemon Anderson, during the LEBRON XIII launch event in Akron on September 27, 2015. Enjoy… and GO CAVS!

Still think Delly is a better player than Mo. If Mo isn’t spotting up or dribbling hes a negative. Delly does everything
Agree with this. I think Delly brings more to the table as an all around player. However, his style of play and limitations offensively make him best suited to coming of the bench in furious spurts. I don’t have a problem with Mo starting, but when Kyrie is back, I think it will be Mo’s minutes that are lost, not Delly’s.
Mo does not have to be a good defender. But if he can’t even be competent, I’d take Delly over him any day.
THE QUEST TO BE THE BEST STARTED TONIGHT !!
ALSO LIKE WHAT I SEE FROM ANDY —PLEASE STAY HEALTHY —IT WIL BE A HUGE PLUS—-ALSO SASHA IS EXACTLY WHAT WE HAD HEARD—NOTHING FLASHY BUT VERY STEADY ON BOTH ENDS GOOD PICK UP– LOVED THE ” FLASH FROM THE PAST ” FROM RJ ” THROWIN THE HAMMER DOWN ” THOSE 3 PLAYERS ADD SO MUCH MORE THAN LAST YRS END OF THE BENCH
Did DJ Stephens already get cut? I didn’t see him play tonight.
Daye won the battle of the 15th spot tonight. Cunningham came in 2nd.
AGREE WITH YOU EVIL —DAYE HAS THE RANGE / EXPERIENCE / HANDLES / PASSING TO KNOCK JOE OUT OF THERE—ALSO REALLY LIKE THE WAY CUNNINGHAM PLAYS / HARD NOSED ON BOTH ENDS —HE MIGHT HAVE AN EDGE ON COOK DUE TO THE EXPERIENCE FACTOR / QUICKNESS/ ATHLETICISM
Cook wasn’t great in this game, but I still like him…not sure there is room on the roster…
All the starters, plus Daye and Cunningham were in the positives tonight…
Joe Harris should be afraid… very afraid… of Austin Daye…
Seriously. Joe still looks like a nice college player trying to see what he can do. Maybe the Cavs want to keep him around for the team chemistry, but right now there’s just no sign of an NBA game from Joe.
Seems like it’s down to Daye, Cook, and Cunningham for the last spot.
THINK CUNNINGHAM AND DAYE MAY HAVE MOVED AHEAD OF COOK TONIGHT —-LOVE CUNNINGHAMS ATHLETICISM / MENTAL TOUGHNESS—-DAYE CAN FLAT OUT SHOOT —–WE ARE ALLOWED IF I HEARD CORRECTLY THE ABILITY TO KEEP 4 PLAYERS TO D-LEAGUE/ CANTON TEAM —WOULD LIKE TO BE ABLE TO KEEP THOSE 3 AROUND—-HARRISS MIGHT BE GETTING PUSHED BY SOME OF THESE GUYS
If Cunningham is a combo guard, does that make Joe Harris a non-bo guard?
Daye definitely got hot at the end here…
Daye might have made the team tonight. He is a spot up dream…tall and can hit from more than one spot
Cunningham with the hoop and the harm!
Daye hits again!
Cook needs to be taught how to move way better. He’s creating more distance for himself with the paths he takes on picks.
Taveras seems like he could be a beast…
Daye is doing decent tonight. I like his defense down low just keeping hands up high.
Wish Daye could hit some of these wide open threes…
And then he did…
And he did again.
Really like Cunningham’s defensive intensity…
Way to pump fake big man CJ.
Nice block by Daye…
Smokin Joe hit one!
Cook got that Elfrid Payton do going…
RJ already knows the “banana in the tailpipe” trick…
Delly having a rough quarter…
Couple of turns and a too deep three try…
Why is Kaun touching the ball so much?
Gotta say… even though it’s pre-season… it’s really good to be back on the thread with you guys!
I agree, I’m just in a better mood when basketball is on.
Love the Delly/Andy two man game… although it will probably put Cols in the nuthouse…
That brought a smile to my face!
Now THAT was a good look by Delly.
How cool is the kid on the bench. That’s a memory for a lifetime.
Is it bad that I’m jealous?
Allie reporting that the girl could barely speak when Bron had her come and sit there… awesome memory for her…
Meanwhile… Cavs have closed the gap from 14 to one without Bron having to be out there… I know it’s against backups, but our backups are doing a nice job so far…
Interested in seeing kaun’s free throws
That was a great possession save by AV that led to the RJ jam as well… so good to see Andy moving, cutting and grabbing timely boards again…
Mike Miller and Shawn Marion could not do that, no sir
WOW! I guess he CAN still dunk!
RJ is an animal.
RJ = return of the jam!
WOW ROCKIN IT BACK TO HIS NETS DAYS
HOLY FATHER TIME!!! RJ WITH THE JAM!!!
I don’t think I ever saw the Matrix do anything like that last season!
Or since like 2007…
RJ HELLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Cunningham for THREE!
Cunningham with the three!!!! These are the guys I wanna see tonight
Go Cavs! I’m a little behind the live broadcast. Kent Bazemore is still a turd.
Delly teardrop… with authority!
Starters seem done
Strong move by Cunningham to the hoop… but next time down turns it over… keep hustlin young fella!
Nice job, Cunningham. About time a Cav took it strong to the basket.
AV making them PAY!
Okay, I love this: We’ve taken 25 3-pt attempts and FOUR free throws. Atl: 15 threes and 18 FTs
Wow, Mo cmpletely turned his back on his man and fell asleep on that play…..
He’s just happy to be here. Wake him up when its time to take a three.
Don’t expect D from Mo… and you won’t be disappointed…
LBJ 2 of 12. Sounds good big fella. See you in the regular season.
