Live Thread: Cavs vs. Bucks (Pre-Season)
2015-10-13The Cavs host the Bucks at 7:00 PM at the Q. The game can be seen on NBA TV and FSO. In what has become common place so far this pre-season, the Cavs will rest LeBron James on the second night of a back-to-back. J.R. Smith is sitting out his second game in a row because of a hamstring issue and Timofey Mozgov is also sitting to nurse his surgically repaired knee.
Kevin Love still isn’t playing, but he may be available later in the week according to Jason Lloyd of the Akron Beacon Journal. Jabari Parker is the only Bucks player who will be missing the contest. He is trying to come back from an ACL tear suffered last season and is resting.
Here are some things to think about while watching the game tonight:
-Pre-season wins mean nothing. Seriously. No title winning team in the past five years has had the best win percentage in the pre-season. When Dallas won the title in 2011, they were 4-4 in their glorified pick up games. Miami was 3-4. The Cavs were 6-2. So, in a way, it’s good the Cavs aren’t unleashing a nuclear bomb of winning on the pre-season.
-The Cavs offense didn’t look too hot against the Grizzlies when LeBron James had to sit. With the King on the floor, the Cavs at least had the threat of him taking the ball to the hoop to get the Grizzlies’ defense on its toes. This freed up everyone on the floor for some semi-open shots. When LeBron sat and Matthew Dellavedova had to initiate all of the play action, the Grizzlies suffocated every Cavalier who dared look at the ball. While the Bucks defense isn’t on the same level as the Grizzlies, it is formidable. They have the arm length of five octopuses, and the Cavs will again struggle to penetrate and even pass. Watch to see how David Blatt tries to free players up without any of his number one scoring options on the floor. Back door action? Motion offense? Double pick and roll plays at the top of the key? Who knows?
-The Bucks are horrendous outside shooters. Greivis Vasquez, Michael Carter Williams, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Greg Monroe have no outside shots to speak of. Rashad Vaugn is an unknown draftee and was supposed to be a shooter. However, during the summer league he shot 25% from deep. Khris Middleton looks to be the only floor spacer the Bucks can rely on at this point. He shot 40% from 3-point land last season.
-The Cavs defense should make a strong showing tonight. They can sag off of guys, dare them to shoot, and look brilliant for doing so.
-Anderson Varejao looked spry against Memphis, and when the Memphis bigs banged with him down low, they had little to no success. When Z-Bo and Marc Gasol pulled Andy out a little bit, they were able to get open shots over his outstretched arms. Offensively, Andy had three assists last night. The Cavs should look to get him in the high post directing the team for a few plays tonight. Delly will get tired at some point and need a break from creating plays.
-It’s official. Jared Cunningham is a Cleveland darling. After scoring 31 points against Philly and 13 points against Memphis while playing very tight defense, he seems to be in the lead for the Cavs’ final roster spot. He has showed more skill than the other training camp invitees, but more importantly, he has shown non-stop effort. Quinn Cook and Austin Daye have looked good for short stretches, but have made mistakes and not always showed the extra hustle needed to make up for them. Today is judgement day for the invitees, as was yesterday. They should all be showing maximum effort tonight after reading all the headlines about Cunningham being a lock for the 15th roster spot.
MDN ROUGH NIGHT ( TOOK A STEP BACK FOR ROSTER SPOT ) ALTHOUGH HE DIDN’T LET THAT AFFECT HIS OTHER GAME( DEF/ PASSING ) CHRISTMAS LOOKED SOLID / PLUS HE IS A BIG BODY —JOE SOMEWHAT REDEEMED HIMSELF–STILLL THINK THERE ARE ? MARKS WITH HIM —COOK DIDN’T SHOW THE NEEDED SENSE OF URGENCY HUSTLE TO MAKE THE ROSTER DAYE WILL BE OVERSEAS
Here is a sad headline:
Lamar Odom found unresponsive in Nevada brothel.
Johnny O’Bryant looked solid for the Bucks. I recall a few mock drafts had the Cavs selecting him last year.
how good was it seeing delly cross over MCW??
very impressed with delly this game. I hope he doesn’t lose too many minutes to mo.
Anyone got the stats for Delly this game? From what I saw before my laptop died he was having an excellent game. His shot looksgoid and that floater of his has added a much needed element to his game. Glad to see it.
ESPN.go.com has the box score & play-by-play Delly’s stat line looks good.
4-9, 3-4 from three, one board, two assists, one steal, no turnovers, 13 points in 21 minutes.
This pleases me. Go Delly go!
final box score:
http://espn.go.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=400830927
Much Danger Ninja 1 for 12
but MCW was 1-11 & he’s a starter.
Neg +/- for all of Bucks starters
Pos +/- for 4 of Cavs’ starters (save MoGotti)
Is it too late for Christmas to put himself in the conversation for the 15th spot?
I don’t think so… he looked solid tonight
I hope he gets a real look. I appreciate the effort Cunningham has shown, but I think the last few games have been a regression to the mean offensively for him.
He still got to the line six times… the shots just didn’t fall for him tonight…
And, they don’t need that much offense from the 15th man… just defense and energy
I agree to an extent. He has to do enough on offense so that the opposition has to put a man on him. Otherwise they can have another defender roaming all the time.
First three games, he shot 13-21 and got to the line 31 times. Yes, he had a rough night at the rack tonight, but he still got to the line six times. He also had three steals, drew three fouls, grabbed four boards and played with energy. Rough night for sure, but I still like his intensity and skill set…
Good triple from Chokin’ Joe…
Just no sense of urgency from Cook out there…
Minnerath Shaqtin a fool shot…
DJ Stephens sighting…
It’s got to be so interesting inside the heads of those competing for a 15th spot on the roster of a championship contender. Knowing that this team is by far the favorite in the east and has the highest odds to win it all, must be in the back of the minds of these players trying to get that last spot. Such a tremendous journey is ahead, and these guys are trying to latch onto to the end of the caravan.
The makings of a reality show
Really JKidd? Putting Monroe back in the game with 5 to go in the fourth? Classy…
Cook’s gotta look to shoot the ball more…
Mayo just going OFF over his haircut twin Cook…
Cavs second second line just couldn’t figure out to get shots to drop at the rim in that third quarter
Yeah, tough game at the hoop for Danger Ninja…
Christmas looks solid though…
CHRISTMAS!!
Mo Gotti! Heating up!
Cook got his pocket picked by Bayless… but came back looking for his shot on next possession… good to see him bounce back and not get discouraged…
Danger Ninja just can’t seem to find his shot right now…
Dionte! Nice fadeaway!
Cook needs to do more with the ball at the top of the circle. needs to create more
Cavs only shooting 30%, but because of the free throws, they are still up by double digits… Also, only 5 turnovers…
Chris Johnson and JFJ with back to back swats!
Highly impressed by what will eventually be the Cavs bench tonight.
Great pass from RJ and three from Mo
Guys are really helping and recovering on D pretty well tonight…
Danger Ninja also has a pretty good handle…
THANKS EVIL I CAN ALWAYS COUNT ON YOU !
Cavs closing in on 40 FTs… and it’s only halfway through the third quarter…
