Recap: Cleveland 104, Orlando 79 (or, 2015 was just a tuneup)
2016-01-03The Cavs baptized baby new year in sweat and twine Saturday tonight. Then, they discarded the Orlando Magic like an expired word-of-the-day calendar. Like Carly Fiorina in 2016, Orlando never stood a chance. LeBron and Co. held the Magic to four points during the first seven minutes, and ended the quarter up 29-13. With three days rest after a brutal Christmas road trip, Cleveland positively vibrated with energy each possession as the Cavs out-ran, out-hustled, out-executed, and out-talented the Magic all night.
Orlando flew in on the second night of a back-to-back, and it showed, as they consistently took the first or second shot available, and failed to get the ball to their leading scorer, Nikola Vucevic. Elfrid Payton looked especially bad, and was rumored to be dealing with an ankle injury. Meanwhile, Cleveland held a dunk-a-thon. LeBron, Mozgov, and Thompson all flushed multiple vicious thumpers while the Magic stood like props.
Cleveland led by as many as 31 in the third and fourth quarters, and the final period was entirely garbage time, as the backend of the Cavs’ bench got plenty of playing time. There were more positives than an after-Christmas-sale for the Cavaliers.
LeBron James‘s jumper was looking wet. I still saw him fade to the left on one or two shots, but as the game went on, it got more compact. Now that Kyrie’s back, and TT and Delly are compressing the defense with the Loaded Wombat offense, ‘Bron’s getting catch-and-shoot jumpers like back in his Miami days, and he’s starting to cash them in. James finished 11-18 from the floor, 4-7 from three, and 3-4 from the line to go with five boards, three assists, two steals, and zero turnovers. Plus the dunks…

I’ll leave it to the commenter Phil Hubbard to sum up Kyrie Irving.
1st Quarter: Kyrie Swerving is back! Sets up a LeBron 3 with a shake-and-bake drive, then attacks the defender in transition for an and-one.
3rd Quarter: Kyrie weaves through the entire Magic defense and finds JR for a 3.
Postgame: Kyrie’s floor game looks like it’s just about back to 100%. He had a few of those drives where he changes direction 4 or 5 times on his way to the hoop, and looked strong and in control. Now he just needs the shot to come around.
Irving finished with 13 on 4-12 shooting, five dimes and a turnover.
Tristan Thompson chased down rebounds like Super Mario jumps for gold coins. Orlando stood around and let him bounce around, over and through them for rebounds, putbacks, and miraculous saves. He had six offensive boards, six defensive, and 10 points on a variety of lane-filling throw downs.

Sadly, TT’s free throw blues are back. 2-8 tonight. But in every other aspect he was stellar. I thought this diving-out-of-bounds offensive rebound, which led to Delly’s only trey, was the play of the night.
Speaking of the Wombat, Matthew Dellavedova went 1-6, but added six assists and only one turnover. He ran the offense perfectly. That lob P/R with TT bent Orlando’s defense into pretzels. The Commonwealth Connection is becoming a real weapon. Orlando was sending three guys to stop it, and Delly found open shooters behind the arc when they did, or got the ball to TT anyway. Delly’s ability to defend either guard spot and to play with any other guard on the Cavs’ roster is going to be a big headache for opposing coaches come playoff time.
Now that the Cavs’ roster is whole, guys who’ve been starting this year and last year like Shump, Mozgov, and Delly are coming off the bench. Now, the Cleveland bench – the Space Stars, as we’ve dubbed them – gives opposing defenses no relief when the starters are resting. Timofey Mozgov was particularly devastating as a finisher tonight. He tried to rip the rim down three times, and ended up with two dunks and three free throws. This left-handed Mozilla and-1 slam over a hapless Nikola Vucevic was the stuff of Hanna-Barbera legend.

Kevin Love only took five shots in 28 minutes, but garnered eight free throws attempts (five made) and collected 13 rebounds. His and Tristan’s ability to control the defensive boards allows LeBron to release on misses and get easy transition buckets.
The crazy thing about this game was that the Cavs could have won by more. Cleveland took a mind-numbing 39 free throws, mainly due to the fact that Orlando fouled five times on three point attempts (a number that Austin Carr was convinced must be a record). The Magic closed out recklessly or bit on pump fake after pump fake. The Cavs left fifteen points off the scoreboard with free throw misses (shooting a disappointing 61%). Defensively, they held Orlando to 38% from the floor. The Wine and Gold also won the turnover battle, four to fourteen.
Orlando, the Eastern Conference’s hottest team in December, got boat-raced. Orlando’s biggest losses this year have all come to the Cavs. Cleveland just has their number. Elfrid Payton probably shouldn’t have been playing. Shabazz Napier looked much more lively in garbage time. Vucevic couldn’t get the ball and couldn’t stay out of foul trouble (four in 13 minutes), and it was the same story for Channing Frye. Victor Oladipo chucked up 11 shots in 13 minutes, and LeBron made Tobias Harris and Evan Fournier look like wood and cardboard cutouts.
It was a festive way to ring in the new year for the Cavaliers. Let’s hope, like last year, that they start peaking in January now that the holiday blues are over. Oh, and this recap wouldn’t be complete without mentioning our cover photo. SuperCavsMan, or whatever he’s calling himself was the highlight of the evening. It certainly took a lot of chutzpah to dress up in a skin tight Cavs costume, and cheer from the front row – especially when you’re not the most, um, svelte person in the world. I hope he becomes a regular feature on the Cavs sideline. He even got to dance with Moondog. Only in Cleveland… This has to be our year.
I was there in Loudville. Loved that the Cavs did not play down to the competition for the customary 2-3 quarters. It was Mo Williams fathead poster day — and he only came in during garbage time. Fans recognized the awkwardness and gave him a very big hand when he first entered with Wild Thing. Hit his first 3 and was chucking a bit, but also trying to get AV and MDN into scorebook. Given the huge margin, don’t really care. Also wonder why AV didn’t get a bit of burn earlier in game, esp when Timo looked gassed. As… Read more »
Answer to more burn time for Andy. Blatt actually addressed that question in presser after the game. His objective between TT, Mosgov and Andy is Mosgov. He knows he has been struggling and purposely inserted TT to start to speed up the pace for starters. He thought Mosgov coming off bench would get him back to the aggressive form of last year. Don’t be surprised if Mosgov starts getting that performance, he gets back into starting line-up. He said in reality he wanted Mosgov to play more mins to help him to get back into form. But his judgment to… Read more »
Oh yeah Shump didn’t play either. WOW that is a huge part of our defense that was missing.
Bottom line, the Cavs will probably be like most teams and have a 9ish man rotation in regular season, and maybe even 8 in the playoffs, where there’s always at least 1 day off in between games. I’d say that means most minutes go to these guys Lebron KLove Kyrie JR TT Shump Delly Mozzy RJ Outside looking in (except for injury and scrub minutes, or maybe 3-4 minutes here or there for different reasons) Mo JFJ Unfortunate victims of the numbers game Andy MDN Outside looking like no shot in hell at seeing ANY non scrub minutes in a… Read more »
You sir, are correct! But I do believe there will some bumps and bruises along the way to get some of these guys in. Hopefully not too serious bumps.
Best Fred and AC highlights of the game were AC laughing his head off for a solid minute after seeing Super Cavs Man. He was speechless he was laughing so uncontrollably. Also in response to Fred saying Elfrid Payton need to figure something out (can’t remember the original statement), AC replied, “His barber needs to figure out what to do with his head.” He said it kind of under his breath, as if he knew he shouldn’t say it. Was fantastic.
Off-topic, but I can’t believe the initial reports about Haslam’s plans for the Browns. They’re going to hire the coach first and let the coach be involved in hiring the GM?
Nothing can help the Browns…
Yeah, its pathetic. Haslam doesn’t see that the problem is him. Pettine I thought was a decent coach. Farmer – meh. The problem, however, is when you hire someone for a job and its their first time, they make a lot of mistakes. You have to let them grow and improve. The same thing is going to happen with whoever he hires. Its going to be a first time coach, GM, they’re going to tear everything down, do it their way, and screw up, because they have to in order to learn. Not to mention, you give a guy knucklheads… Read more »
I was about to tear the Browns and Haslam a new one but then he hires Sashi Brown. It shows he understands he doesn’t know how to run a franchise….that’s cool, just be the owner and hire competent people. Who knows if Brown will do what is necessary but at least Haslam is not trying to fit that role.
Off topic. A real shame a former Cav, Jarret Jack out for the season with an ACL injury This hurts the Nets. They were starting to turn a corner.
Even worse, it could potentially help the Celtics.
Nothing can help the Celtics…
Oh yeah something happen to Avery last game.
Jack being out might help the Nets. Is he even above replacement level?
No would destroy Delly one on one.
Starbury would destroy Mo one on one.
I’m sure he doesn’t… even in practice…
It would be tough for Mo to score on Delly, and Mo plays no defense…
When it comes to making observations about the Cavs, EG would destroy you one on one.
Yeah no one can destroy delly one-on-one ;)
DOUBT IF THEY WILL MOVE HIM ( LEBRON/ JR NEED TO ” GET WITH HIM ” ) SO HIS MINUTES HAVEN’T BEEN THERE AS OF LATE / DON’T KNOW WHAT MAY SURFACE DOWN THE ROAD —–UNLESS HE IS PART OF SOME ” BLOCK BUSTER ” TRADE —KEEP HIM ( ALTHOUGH I AGREE HIS BODY LANGUAGE WASN’T THE MOST POSITIVE LAST NIGHT ) —STILL INTIGUED BY MORRIS/ IF THE PRICE IS RIGHT ( AND WE HAVE SOMEWHAT OF A GOOD IDEA/ FEELING THAT HE IS WILLING TO CHANGE )–MIAMI / BULLS STILL CONCERN ME —ESPECIALLY IN A SHORT SERIES/ ANYTHING CAN… Read more »
Mo is probably being really upset and acting out for his lack of minutes. If he continues to sulk, do you guys think the Cavs move him? I highly doubt it. Curious on everyone’s thoughts on this.
SUPERCAVSMAN ( I STILL BELIEVE ) IS COLS IN DISGUISE
Jimmy butler is quietly (though today not so quietly) putting d-rose out of Chicago fans memories, and has quickly made Chicago a legit threat to make the ECF. We will be there to likely throttle them, but the prospect of watching mike dunleavy shred us in their losses (cuz he always shreds the Cavs) is not appealing to me. D-Rose…get ready to enjoy playing for Brooklyn or Sacremento or some other far end of the balling universe
D-Rose’s whole career is depressing. Butler is the real deal. Love watching him play. Chicago doesn’t have the horses to challenge the Cavs, but they have as good a chance as anyone, probably.
Several mentions about the Cavs interest in Markieff Morris…any thoughts, pro or con? Sounds like he could be a valuable backup PF who matches up well with our least favorite non-Cavs player, good ol’ what’s-his-name.
No reaon not too
I thought you hated head cases, Cols…?
Cols doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy that hates himself.
If we can get him for Joe Harris – yes. He is worth a flier. There is clear leadership on this team and if he isn’t getting with it, just waive him. He is very talented. He is a headcase and he is pouting in Phoenix, but we’re not getting anything good for the exception without baggage. If being on a contender gets him going – he is great depth at the PF and particularly allows TT to focus on Center more and takes pressure off Moz. Worst case, he becomes a cancer, costs us a game or two, and… Read more »
Yeah. If Mo is being surly (and he has a history of this), he needs to go. Just show him the damned numbers about how the Cavs play better with Delly than they do with him. He can either be the third point guard on a championship level team, or he can score a bunch of garbage buckets for an also ran. That’s his choice. Everyone reaches a point in their career where they get outplayed by someone younger and hungrier. It’s tough, but it happens. Ather time is undefeated. If this is all just conjecture, I’m not for moving… Read more »
Did anything happen with him? Why is everyone talking about him being surly all of a sudden? Is this just people’s Delly support getting out of hand, or what?
That deal doesn’t make any sense. Cavs don’t need another big who can’t defend. Cavs aren’t giving the Suns anything of value, and Phoenix should have moved him when they could get something for him. I’m doubting that Cleveland has the assets to make this deal happen, nor anything that Phoenix wants. Also, I’m doubting that CavsDan wants to shell out the $34 million in salary and luxury taxes it would take to move Morris into the exception. The exception is for next summer, not this Summer. What would worry me is Morris ending up on the Heat, which could… Read more »
I’m more worried about the Bulls if they can find another piece at the deadline. The Heat do have some great pieces but until they somehow luck into a ridiculous player, I don’t see a real threat.
There are no threats in the east.
What’s funny is that Windhorst has been bringing up Morris to the Cavs as a good move since he can be a ‘Draymond Green stopper’. Yeah, right.
Yeah I could see that. Riley’s last hurrah for a shot at a title.. or to contend. The problem is.. they cant shoot. Yep they cant. Adding morris wont push the needle that much. They play at a slow pace and their point guard needs to run to be maximized but the rest of the team cant. What does adding Dwight really do now compared to Hassan besides needing more shots to be happy? One thing tho, i believe Riles is preparing a big run at KD. Thats a differenf story.
Entertaining recap Nate to an entertaining game. Some points:
1. Great to see LBJ’s jumper return…that could be a huge plus moving forward
2. Great to see Moz look dominant again…hope he keeps it up
3. Seems like there was a clearer rotation established in this game…which has been needed
4. Dave Mcmenamin wrote that Mo showed up late and wasn’t very supportive during the game…not a good sign. Delly is clearly a more effective backup and it appears Mo is having trouble accepting it.
I forgot to mention: SuperCavsMan was not wearing those twig and berries covering shorts in the first quarter. He was wearing a very tight banana hammock that left little to the imagination.
Pics or it didnt happen
I absolutely LOVED that guy. Props to you, man. At some point in life, we all realize that there is no point in living your life for anyone else. Enjoy yourself. Dude felt like donning the spandex and didn’t care what anyone thought. Enjoyed the hell out of himself and amused thousands. You go dude.
That Timo dunk was so cathartic. What is this Mo Williams nonsense? Could we get decent value before the trade deadline for Mo and Joe Harris, along with whatever picks we have ?
That’s dicey. I can’t see them parting with Mo considering the injury history of Kyrie.
Kyries injury history plays into it, but the way MDN has played, and of course, Delly, Mo isn’t nearly as valuable as he thinks he is. He is a decent back PG if you don’t care about defense and want someone who can run an offense and hit open looks. But any team that relies on him as a starting level PG is not going far.
Mo is on such a cheap contract, and is a valuable piece in case of injury. I doubt they’d throw him in on some trade.
I think it’s worth noting he took a much smaller contact than he could have had to come back to Cleveland. Turning around and trading him now would be in bad faith.
Loved the game! Great, Blatt could get everyone in that was dressed. I’m more concerned on Cavs disappearing 3 point shot. Where the hell did it go? Kyrie,JR, Delly and Mo were pretty bad. As far as Delly, do you honestly think he loses his position to Mo defending Lowry on Monday? Lowry eviscerated Mo with 27 pts on Nov 25th game when Delly was injured. Now I do think Blatt can find a way to get him in there more. (imo) Jones had that proverbial “even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes” kind of game that has been… Read more »
It’s good to see LeBron shooting much better. If he goes back into a slump, Blatt should start Mo in his place and bring in LeBron when Mo gets cold. :p
During the broadcast they mentioned that Kevin Love is in the top 5 in “combined points, rebounds, and assists.” Kevin has turned into a stealth player, in that it’s difficult to perceive all that he’s doing out there.
That being so, I’d still like to get just one or two 27 point games out of him – what he “averaged” in Minnesota.
Very entertaining article, Nate. Thanks for taking the time.
Wish I had thought of:
“They discarded the Orlando Magic like an expired word-of-the-day calendar.”
“The Commonwealth Connection is becoming a real weapon.”
“Tristan Thompson chased down rebounds like Super Mario jumps for gold coins.”
“This left-handed Mozilla and-1 slam over a hapless Andrew Nicholson was the stuff of Hanna-Barbera legend.”
“LeBron made Tobias Harris and Evan Fournier look like wooden cardboard cutouts.”
TT compared to Super Mario is my favorite!
I agree with KLove’s assessment after the game that maybe SuperCavsMan was a mild mannered dude who just lost a bet…
Was thinking that too.
Great recap to a thoroughly enjoyable start to the New Year! I missed it live and caught it on my DVR late last night. Had to keep pausing and rewinding to relive all the dunks and great plays… Some things I was impressed with: Kyrie played some inspired defense (especially in the first quarter), LBJ played inside out, KLove and TT rebounded like maniacs, Moz looked like his old self and showed some tremendous emotion, Delly distributed the ball extremely well, RJ and JFJ stroked timely threes, and even the ninja got a dunk…
Good observations all around. “LBJ played inside out.” How much better we play.
Everything we were hoping for! Great game with a parade of dunks and 3s.
Delly was fine — 6 assists, 3 rbs, +11 in 19 minutes. I’d love to know LeBrons shooting percentage on catch and shoots off of passes from Delly but I feel like it’s like 75%.
Who is Mr SuperCavMan?! Will he return?
If LBJ gets the jumper going, and Kyrie gets his rhythm, this offense will take off. It remains crazy to me how we are in control of the East despite playing at like 60% of capacity so far.
Loved that SuperFan guy last night. Cols, was that you? LOL.
I will join Cols in the fringe minority of Delly skeptics. I love the guy, but still see lots of limitations in his game. When teans take away the Delly-Oop lob play, he has a tough time creating.
Delly has been really bad since his breakout stretch. Maybe just play Mo when hot. Then when he goes cold
Play Delly until he goes cold and so on
Sigh… despite your thirst for it, scoring isn’t everything… he’s still been distributing the ball well and playing exemplary defense…
I’m inclined to side with EG on this one. Dellys is clearly one of the best back PGs in the league, not on the strength of his o, but his D and ability to run the offense and get teammates open looks. The dude averages like 5-6 assists coming off the bench!! He guards 1s and 2s, is scrappy, limits turnovers and occasionally goes off and has hoy shooting nights…in the immortal words of young Gilbert, “what’s not too like?” I like Mo Gotti as much as any Cavs fan and like Nate truly believe those Cavs teams given the… Read more »
EG, Why do you dignify Cols’ Delly and LBJ comments by making rebuttals? The schtick was fun for awhile.
Well… it’s better than watching the Browns on a Sunday… ;)
Like I wrote above, when teams commit three guys to stop it, and there are three shooters on the perimeter, Delly’s finding the open guys and someone’s getting a wide open triple. LeBron got a couple this way.
James was awesome. Delly has been bad for the last few games. Dude better step it up or Mo is taking his job agian.
Delly’s not losing his job to Mo… no matter how hard you troll for it…
And Mo would give up 20 points to that troll on 80% shooting
