Podcast Episode 87: Clutch Dunks
2016-02-15https://soundcloud.com/ctb-5/cavs-theblog-podcast-episode-1
Evil Genius and I did the unthinkable. We recorded a podcast and kept it under an hour. We gushed about the dunk contest, we shot turnaround fadeaways from the hip on Kobe, touched on our memorable moments of All-Star weekend, and briefly discussed Kyrie Irving’s strong offensive play of late. Finally, we touched on what the Cavs need to do in the second half to win a championship. Commentariat, what were your top 3 moments of All-Star weekend? Is the Kobe love-fest undeserved? What’s the secret to the Cavs bringing home the Larry O’Brian trophy?
That moment when u realize that you don’t have as many friends as you actually think. #smh — Mo Williams
What do you think he means? Noticeable lack of Cleveland Cavaliers related tweets on Mo’s twitter feed.
Who knows? Maybe he got traded? Or he’s moping.
LOL That Mo tweet sounds like something I’d expect from a high school teenager let alone a grown man who’s made millions.
I kind of feel bad for Mo. And I think he might be happier on a new team.
Hard for me to feel bad for him… he chose to sign here and he knew the deal. There’s always a chance he was misled/lied to by management, but I find that hard to believe given the fact everybody knew Kyrie was coming back and Delly had Blatt and Griffin’s support.
Yeah, I wonder if he thought it would be like old times?
Definitely the impression I received from him when he did sign.
It should read “that moment you realize scoring 52 is easier on a losing team than playing under the constant pressure of needing to win.”
Mo is a great example of why we do NOT need someone to replace kyrie. Good players on losing teams are easy to find. Players who can still perform when it matters are much more rare. Trading kyrie is idiotic.
LOL… shouldn’t he have realized that when he was clanking jumpers during the playoffs the first time around with LBJ??? Further, shouldn’t management have known this??? Bad move by Griffin.
I wouldn’t call it a bad move. It was pretty low cost. And they can always trade him.
I think the problem with Mo is that he doesn’t know his role on this team. That’s partially on him and on the coaches. He can’t play defense so his options for playing time are limited, and when he decides to go ISO, he’s gotta be pulled.
I think he, like most people, seriously underestimated Delly. He probably thought he would be the backup PG replacing that dirty scrub,Delly.Oops.
Heat with serious concerns tonight about Bosh’s health;agent says “too soon to report” if he has another blood clot: miamiherald.typepad.com/sports-buzz/20…
Hope he’s okay!!!!
That sucks. I hope it’s not a big deal.
Rumors about Oladipo are abound, do we have anything the Magic want?
They should have just drafted him in the first place. Seriously, it’s who I wanted, but they lusted for Canadian Bacon. I think they’d have to give up too much in a trade.
For what its worth – Cavs are actively looking at deals – Cavs sources say Iman Shumpert not under active trade consideration — Steve Kyler
GOOD ARTICLE/ YARDBARKER/ BART DOAN— WHY ALL THE RUNORS ABOUT LOVE BEING TRADED SHOULD STOP —TOTALLY AGREE !!—–THOUGHT SOME TEAM WOULD MAKE A TRADE TODAY —CLF WHAT ARE THE DAILY ODDS ( TUES / WED / THURS ) THAT THE 1ST TRADE IS MADE AND THEN ” THE FLOOD GATES WILL BE OPENED “—–I AM SAYING TOMORROW (TUES ) WILL BE 1ST TRADE —ANY TAKERS —
Hey NOMAD!!! Couldn’t find any figures readily available. But there are some articles out there stating that basically in-season trades are useless. Odds of winning championship change by +/- 1% or less usually after trade.
Great podcast you two! Covered a lot of topics within an hour. I can’t imagine the Cavs have enough combinations of assets to move any of their heavy salary guys (leaves shump and love off the table). And they would be so so dumb to get rid of Delly, and Mozgov’s stock is crazy low. They will probably save money w the trade exception and try to sign someone who gets bought out. Trading shump would be idiotic. They need to consider that they will lock Lebron up for the rest of his career next year, and then they have… Read more »
Thanks Scotch! We were running the two-man game as fast as we could… ;)
What do you guys think?
http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=zwanbj4
Do not want; hate those guys. There’s a limit to who I’ll support wearing the laundry I cheer for
Good god, is that possible? Best player in the world having the most efficient season of all time getting paid a ridiculous amount. Sure they are arrogant on the court, but if you play like they have the past two years, you get to be cocky. By the way, the 90s bulls were insufferable, and got away with way more contact than the warriors ever have. The Jordan rules were a thing. Also fairly certain you would love everyone of those guys if they were on your team. In fact I did use to love Livingston when he was on… Read more »
If I can cheer for one arbitrary set of millionaires, I can hate another set. I also hate Scar from the Lion King, and he’s a cartoon. Perspective!
That trade gets the Cavs the trophy. Get it done, Griff, or you’re fired.
#Cavs make Iman Shumpert available for a trade, per @ESPNSteinLine & @WindhorstESPN: hoopsrumors.com/2016/02/cavs-m…
I wonder if these “make so and so available” is just a team calling inquiring about a player?
I’d love to see #Cavs make Mo Willliams available for trade rumors
I’m OK with this – I like Shump but a lot of time I feel like swish is just strictly better. For $10M a year I expect more out of Shump.
But you’d be taking away his defense, which is really good. I’m not sure who they’d be getting back in the trade, but I wouldn’t trade Shump for a big like Koufas, or a wing that can’t defend.
I love JR, but he is a lot older than Shump. And, defense is just as important as offense, even though most fans value offense about 10 times bigger than defense. Remember the Cavs got Shump basically free as long as they took JR too. So just last year, JR’s trade value was negative. He is vastly better now than he was before, but he is getting along. Shump is on the way up.
Is there any way we can get Rubio for a deal?
Shaq was pretty consistent about only giving 10s for made FIRST dunks. You could see him mouthing that when guys were giving him the business. Scale is 6 to 10 Aaron Gordon looked like he was going to be a breakout guy this year during Summer League. I know, I know, but the kid has a lot of skill actually. He will be a really nice player in about a year or two. That kid in jeans was amazing. I’m glad they showed it during the broadcast. I don’t know about USA League Pass, but for International League Pass just… Read more »
The NY Times did a good profile in December of the guy in jeans. He’s a professional dunker who’s 6-1 with a 48-inch vertical. He does some really creative stuff.

He looks like Opie Taylor, but here he is taking over Rucker Park:

GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZ
That dude EXPLODES off the hardwood
re: push off. I loved Aaron Gordon’s pike position dunk, but I also think he did a little push off of Stuff’s head to get there.
No word on the Knicks, Celtics and Cavs trade?
http://www.cbssports.com/nba/eye-on-basketball/25482691/rumor-knicks-celtics-cavs-talked-carmelo-anthony-kevin-love-trade
I just can’t see how trading for Carmelp will fix any of the problems that Kevin Love brings. Love is a better passer, Carmelo can put the ball on the floor but other then that I think its a bit of a wash.
Both are questionable on defense, both are injury prone, both need the ball to be effective. At least Kevin is 3 years younger and you can pair him with Kyrie for years to come.
Love is also a better 3pt shooter and rebounder.
Really really really doubt Carmelo is going anywhere, no matter how badly Nate wants him. /s/s/s
i don’t think he is going anywhere as well, but I can’t see why Cleveland would even look his way.
Me either, but ‘discussed’, as described in this article, could mean almost anything, if it even happened.
It was pretty unanimously shot down.
I heard a guy discussing the Boston/NY/Cleveland trade on ESPN radio about midnight Saturday. Don’t know how he was, but he sounded sharp. He said you have to consider all teams viewpoint, and the trade would be great for Boston and New Your, and a disaster for Cleveland, so the Cavs will never do it. He concluded “not a chance”. He went into a discussion of how such rumors start. One possibility is that Boston or New York is hoping to get some interest from anyone for a trade, and has started this rumor in hopes of getting some other… Read more »
#Cavs have made a play for #Kings C Kosta Koufos, per @ESPNSteinLine. See more: hoopsrumors.com/2016/02/cavs-i…
FWIW, Kosta Koufos is a northeast Ohio native and former Ohio State player. See more on #Cavs interest: hoopsrumors.com/2016/02/cavs-i… #Kings
This should be interesting… CLE doesn’t have the assets to afford him unless it’s some kind of salary dump in the works by some team.
The link states that the Cavs have been shopping Love… I sure hope not.
Kobe deserves the accolades. One of the best ever. Had a long career. Won lots of titles. Played for maybe the most popular team ever. Trying to downplay or short change his achievements just makes people sound bitter.
I think Kobe was great and does deserve the praise but so does Tim Duncan if he decides to hang it up. I think some people get irritated with how the media portrays and gives Kobe God-like treatment. I bet Tim Duncan won’t get that by his choicel. I also think it gets old that we are treating this guy like the GOAT when in fact, he’s outside of the top 10 for a decent amount of NBA “experts”. Kobe was also very fortunate that he played for probably the best or second best franchise his whole career and also… Read more »
Cols whining about other takes different than his own makes Cols sound bitter.
Bryant was great. He deserves the going away party. I just hope we have a similar one for the King when he retires in 10 years.
10 years? Leb’s gonna dominate at least until he’s 45. 50 if he fixes his broken jumper.
Yeah, why does Cols hate Leb? Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.
There we go Cols!!! That’s improvement! Kudos to you.
So, Cols, how did you like the Kobe-mania causing the world to totally ignore LeBron breaking the Kobe ASG all time scoring record?
I think if the East had Kevin Love at their disposal they would have won.

I didn’t really watch All-Star weekend so I don’t have any top moments. I probably watched about 15 minutes worth of All-Star weekend. All-Star weekend is the cheese of the cheese.

Athank you! ??
My b for g chatting you lol
Actually it was my buddy wes trying to swindle me with some fantasy trades.
Swindle? Haha….I gave you full disclosure and lots of options for legitimate deals! Don’t disparage me with your media might! :)
Great chat, thanks for posting. I really don’t mind the chatblips, makes me feel like you guys are “jacked in”.
Hah! How am I slipping you that 20? PayPal?
Haven’t had a chance to listen, but I will tomorrow. As someone who watched the opening of the All Star game in a restaurant with no sound, it seemed unbelievable to me how much Kobe was slurped. You’d think he was Wilt or Jordan or somebody – he’s not that. I understand he has been around for a good portion of the younger player’s lives, but that was way over the top. And it’s not exactly like he’s even been some sort of lovable guy throughout his career. I don’t think there is any trade the Cavs can make that… Read more »
I agree. I don’t think there is a trade that the Cavs could make, that would make them better. I understand the Timo angle, with trying to get something for him before he requests a big contract next summer.
I hope they don’t trade Delly. He’s the glue for this team.
