BREAKING: J.R. Smith Broken Thumb Confirmed… Out Indefinitely

2016-12-21 Off By EvilGenius

According to sources quoted by Brian Windhorst of ESPN, J.R. Smith will need to undergo surgery to repair the broken thumb he suffered in last night’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks. Smith appeared to injure the thumb while trying to defend a drive by Giannis Antetokounmpo towards the end of the first half.

Initial X-rays taken at the arena were inconclusive, according to the Cavs, and J.R. traveled back to Cleveland with the team to have the injury re-evaluated this morning. He will reportedly be out for an extended period, as the typical recovery time for this type of injury is 4-6 weeks.

DeAndre Liggins replaced Smith in the starting lineup to start the second half of last night’s game, and the expectation would be that he’d do so again tonight, although that has yet to be announced by Coach Ty Lue. The timing of this set back for J.R. is tough, as it creates additional personnel issues with the recent loss of Chris Andersen and the season-long injury holdout of Mo Williams.

We’ll update this with any further information as it’s announced…

Confirmed by the team in an official release…
