Live Thread: Trade Deadline Madness
2017-02-23There’s already been plenty of action and rumors of blockbuster trades leading up to the NBA’s annual trade deadline… which ends at 3pm EST today. While it’s hard to imagine a move that will eclipse Sunday’s Boogie-mageddon, there are still several marquee targets (PG-13, Jimmy Butler, Andre Drummond) and a host of complementary ones (Aaron Afflalo, Taj Gibson, Jahlil Okafor, PJ Tucker) being reportedly made available. Even the Cavs are in the rumor mix with several teams asking about the availability of Iman Shumpert, and reports of them making runs at PGs like Deron Williams and Shelvin Mack. They also had Larry Sanders in for a workout yesterday, but likely would hold off until after the deadline has passed (and maybe the buyout week that follows) to see if any other big men shake loose (Andrew Bogut anyone?). Follow all the action, rumors and dealmaking here and chime in with anything you hear…
Also, let’s have some fun and submit your best Trade Deadline haikus… here’s mine
Celtics want Jimmy
But Danny is a hoarder
Not my Brookyn pick!

Live thread is up.
Betting Terrence Jones ends up some place he can get more playing time. Wizards seem like a good choice. But I’ll be surprised if he clears waivers. Someone should claim him for $1 mil.
Windy doesn’t know the differenes between waivers & a buyout.
same lol
Hopeful on Deron Williams, exciting times coming. As for C, any useful big will do, prefer Bogut though..
AND “DWILL” WIN THE NBA CHAMPIOSHIP
Another D-Will? D-Will1 and D-Will2?
I believe the Mavericks bought out the contract which leaves D-Will1 as a free agent??
Cavs need time to send Felder to the D-league so we can work on Sanders/Bogut?
Probably will just cut McRae…
That wouldn’t open a spot.
how does a spot open? I see where Mavs didn’t buy out the contract so we have to wait until Saturday but sending Felder to the d-league won’t open a roster spot?
Still counts against the 15 so long as he’s under contract with the Cavs. It isn’t like sending a baseball player to the minors.
Nope. Waived. He has to clear waivers. 48 hours.
You are mistaken. They waived him. Post a link if otherwise.

This is interesting… not sure what the loophole would be though…

If it comes to that, JR will be back to collide with his knee again.
FAKE NEWS
How is it fake news? It’s not even news… it’s social media…
How would this be diff than Cle getting Varejao back after portland waived him?
Gsw -> dal -> waived
Cle -> por -> waived
Fine with me. I can hate him & the Warriors & we can sign Sanders.
fake news
……..OR I COULD BUY ANOTHER 6 PACK FOR SAT NIGHT
I am super excited the Cavs are back tonight… but not lying that I might be switching over to Boogie’s NOP debut here and there…
MAN IF WE GET BOTH BOGUT AND THE “OTHER ” DWILL –I AM GETTING ‘TOASTED ” TONIGHT —-JUST GOT A 6 PACK OF ” LAGUNITAS HOP STOOPID ” —GETTING IN MY PRE-GAME WARM UPS
We won’t know for sure for 48 hours… so save some of those hops for Saturday night… ;)
That’s great news on JR. If we actually end up with Bogut, Deron Williams and Korver that would be amazing…….particularly for what may be relatively minimal cost. With the DWill aleady on team, and once Love returns, the Cavs will indeed have the Strength in Numbers.
Amen. Korver, D-Will, D-Will, + Sanders/Bogut would mean Griff added 4 legit rotation level guys midseason. That would push us to 13: Irving, JR, James, Love, TT; D-Will, Shump, Korver, RJ, Frye; Liggins, D-Will, Sanders/Bogut. Felder is the only guy who can’t really play. I’d even trust Champ for a couple minutes.
Bogut will have choices. Rockets & Celtics, I’d assume will also pursue.
People around the league think Bogut wants Cavs, according to the always reliable Twitterverse…
Spurs are interested in Bogut too. Bogut has choices to make.
Cols, between your love of RTJ and IPAs… you probably need to track some of this stuff down…
https://twitter.com/ReadOctober/status/834898714309296128
I’m glad the Cavs didn’t deal Shump… especially since the potential offers weren’t that great. I probably would have been okay if they could have gotten Beverley for him, but still I think his improved three point shooting has helped the team. Here’s hoping he can get his mojo back on the defensive end also…

YES!
I think we need a pod. Put up the podsignal EG!!!!!!!!!!!
We got a game in less than two hours Cols… Besides, Tom will probably have his pod with Mark Neal tonight… you should call into that

I don’t know how he got this info, but according to a friend, , a team needs a $9million exception or $9 million in cap room to claim Deron or he becomes FA.
That is ture. $9 million is his contract. Teams with $9 million in room or exception are: Utah (they were interested pre-deadline), Denver, Minny, Suns, nyets. Utah worries me.
No one is going to claim him.
I really don’t know why Orange Mamba is on this roster. It sort of irritates me.
We were hoping he could improve from that showing last year vs. Detroit (36). We needed scoring off the pine. It was a good, low risk move. We took fliers on McRae, Liggins, & Felder. We got one hit & it is too early to say on Felder. Still, 1/3 on d-leaguers & 2nd round guys is pretty good.
Waiver official. It IS a waiver. 48 hours to clear.

Yea, I just never saw the potential I guess. Doesn’t have an NBA body. And at this stage, has no excuse for not having built one, granted full health.
I’ve followed Deron for years, since a good friend is from Salt Lake. He’s not a big character guy. He’s def got the skills to backup Kyrie, and hopefully our locker room can coax his best effort from him.
He may find it liberating to not have to be a key guy anymore. Going 10-15 minutes a game may translate into a more focused effort.
And less injuries & a longer career. Like I said, I saw him fighting pretty hard on one leg last year in a hopeless cause vs. OKC in the POs. I’ll take that guy.
More than anything, this is when Lebron’s season begins. One of the greatest ever engages. Best trade deadline acquisition every single year.

Provided some team doesn’t claim him…

They won’t. Once again surd.
Again… you realize that “surd” means the same thing as “absurd” right?
Don’t mess with my happy
Kramer joke from Seinfeld.
—
“Jerry, all these big companies, they write off everything.”
“You don’t even know what a write-off is.”
“Do you?”
“No, I don’t.”
“But they do. And they’re the ones writing it off.”
“I wish I had the last twenty seconds of my life back.”
Seinfeld was not fraudulent. Seinfeld ruled. I’m surprised you like it.
If you have to repeat something like ‘fraud’ million times, that is because you know it is not true and you don’t believe it.
I believe it. Curry most overrated player ever. You know if Curry wasn’t so overrated, I may actually like him.
Best backup PGs in the NBA
1. Houston – Lou Williams
2. Cleveland – Deron Williams
3. San Antonio – Patty Mills
?
Lou Williams is not a PG… he’s a combo guard
Lou isn’t a PG. Shaun Livinston is pretty good. Nelson in Denver was so good he starts now. Cory Joseph for the Raps.
Livingston averages less than 6 points and 2 assists per game. That’s pretty awful.
1. CLEVELAND – LEBRON JAMES
https://twitter.com/WindhorstESPN/status/834891806118658050
Cols… notice the part that says “if he clears”
https://twitter.com/JeffZillgitt/status/834889260771782657
So nada on the buyout? I was hoping it was example #1,000,000 of journalists not being accurate.
Dallas waives Deron
Cavs could have DWill squared soon
Surd is not a word
Cavs have DWill now
Extra one for injury?
But not one more Jones
Williams is shooting 43%, 35% from three and averaging 6.9 assists with a 15.39 PER. That’s pretty good for a backup PG. To compare, Delly is shooting 39%, 36% from three and averaging 5.2 assists and 10 PER.
Williams>>Delly. He’s the perfect backup PG.
Yeah, if we could get him to stick around for a couple years, it gets more awesome. First things first, let’s land him.
PER is stupid
Remember when Deron Williams was in the conversation as one of the best PGs in the league before he got traded to the Nets?
The Nets destroy everyone and everything in their path…
Honestly, not sure about Deron Williams. He doesn’t provide that gritty defense that Delly did. And his play-making ability won’t come in use for more than 10 minutes a game. Would rather prefer a physical presence on defense. Cavs defense has struggled this season.
Delly didn’t provide any defense last Finals.
He’s a ball-handling, playmaking body for the rest of the regular season… and a vet who can play a few minutes in the playoffs and hit some shots if needed in spot duty… that’s about all they need in that slot anyway…
Less point guard LeBron
Deron takes some possessions
That has some value
I hope you guys are right. If we even get him. He just hasn’t shown much when the pressure is on since he was in Utah. Hopefully, he isn’t a turnstile on defense. Throwing guys like JR, Shump, Liggins, Lebron, and a playoff mode motivated Kyrie at the Warriors’ shooters has been key to defending them. Being physical, gritty on defense is huge for us for a second ring. If Deron could deliver some of that along with his play-making, it would be incredible. Hopefully, his shot holds up as well under pressure. It’s been known to come and go… Read more »
I think it is a regular season move more than anything. If Kyrie rests, we don’t go to pieces. If James rests, we have a #2 PG. He was pretty gritty on one leg vs. OKC last year in the POs. If Kyrie gets two fouls in a quarter in a PO game, our rotations won’t get messed up. Deron > open spot. McRae will get waived (or Felder) & we’ll scoop up a C type (or two). This saves Kyrie & James some tread on their tires.
Vertical has it as done deal (he’s a FA). Or waived.
Liggins can play that gritty D Delly role.

So let’s sign Deron Williams, Larry Sanders, and Terrence Jones. Waive Orange Mamba and give JFJ a raise to become a coach. Done and done. :)
There’s no way Terrence Jones would want to come here. He just wouldn’t get the playing time he wants. Deron Williams seems the most likely but I do not know what the Cavs level of interest is.
As for Sanders, who the heck knows?
All of this is surd.
https://twitter.com/uninterrupted/status/834884512228126720
The Dallas Mavericks have offered to pay the remaining amount of Deron Williams’ $9 million salary if the veteran point guard wants to become a free agent, sources told ESPN.
So when is Bogut supposed to be healthy?
He was apparently available to play before trade.
Nothing earth-shuttering happened after all, though with the Warriors and Cavs being so good this shouldn’t come as a surprise. What the Celtics are doing has to feel embarassing. What good do all those picks do? The returns of all those picks turn into actual players is diminishing even if they nail each one of them. They already stashed 2 first round picks in Europe this year and they will have to continue to do so. I really don’t get it.
All in all, Cavs still heads and shoulders above the East.
So, Kevin Love is still a Cavalier? Shocker. /s
For now… he could still be bought out… /s
Cavs still working on a buyout./s
https://twitter.com/ESPNSteinLine/status/834876497693331456
Good move by them. They could use a big guy. We don’t have much use.
Sweet. Getting Deron Williams makes me happy.
Six teams with a shot. Dubs, Cavs, Spurs, Raps, Rockets, Clippers.
Barring injury?
It’s Cavs, frauds, Rockets, Clippers.
A shot at what?
Winning it all. Thing is though it’s really either Cavs. Or frauds. If Rockets, Clippers get to the Finals we will sweep them.
I would take the Clips out of that category… they aren’t anywhere close to good enough…
They looked pretty darn good at the start when healhty. CP3 is ready to go. I’d expect them to sit 3rd at the finish line (in the West).
I see a lot of their games in person… they’re not championship caliber and never have been…
Having two DWills on the team will get super confusing…
https://twitter.com/daldridgetnt/status/834871070029180928
EG, if deron is waived more teams would be in play I assume than with a buyout. So I don’t get this tweet
Yeah, I don’t get it either… several teams under the cap floor would certainly claim him if he was waived instead of bought out…
Nah. Why would they do that if he doesn’t want to play there.
Because any team with priority on waiver rights before the Cavs CAN claim Williams. Your certainty is absurd.
Yes, but why would they if he doesn’t want to be there? And honestly, can you stop with the insults for a bit? I’ve never personally insulted you ever.
EG said your Spurs dislike was irrational and I said your take on waiver rights was absurd. Those are not personal insults rather commentary on your opinions.
But your certainty is absurd it always has been. Calling someone absurd is not an insultt it is a badge of honor
Whatever. My take on waivers is completely surd. Teams don’t claim players if they don’t want to play for them. Plus they’d have to take on the entire contract. That’s surd.
It doesn’t matter at all about whether he wants to play somewhere… the waiver process is just that, and there are several teams who need contracts to make it to the salary floor and not get penalized for that…
Yes. But the penalty is just to distribute some more money to the current players on the team, there’s really no penalty.
So even if he does get picked up, he’ll get bought out and if he wants to come to Cleveland and we want him we get him.
Once again, this is completely and totally surd.
Surd is not a word… at least not the way you are using it… there’s a “surd” used in math as the irrational root of an integer… but that’s synonymous with absurd…
Yes.
They would claim him and then buy him out.
His tweet must be by mistake. Dallas is offering to pay full salary as buyout and make him FA, then he can sign with anyone for vet minimum.
Yes. DA must have not slept or something. If he gets waived, teams would have to pay his contract if they claim him & he isn’t a FA until he clears. He’s got that bass-ackwards.
Quick Poll: Which big man do you want most for the Cavs?
A) Andrew Bogut
B) Larry Sanders
C) Terrance Jones
Bogut for me. Seemed to always give 15-17 minutes solid minutes when he played
Sanders. Risky Business. Sometimes, you just have to say WTF & make your move.
Bogut. His illegal screens will make Korver a lot of money…
1. Sanders, if he’s the same guy; 2. Jones, cheap, young, and good; 3. Bogut, coming off injury, limited upside who’ll likely not play too many meaningful minutes in the playoffs.
