Five Reasons Why LeBron Will Be Le-MVP
2017-08-21LeBron James has been the MVP of the National Basketball Association four times in his career. He did it twice each as a Cavalier the first time around (2009 & 2010), and as a member of the Miami Heat (2011 & 2012). That tally ties him with the great Wilt Chamberlain, and slots him just one behind Michael Jordan and Bill Russell… two behind the incomparable Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He’s been the runner up to the award twice (2006 to Steve Nash; 2013 to Kevin Durant), and been third three other times (2011, 2015 and 2016). In fact, he’s only finished outside the top five twice in his 14 year career… in his first two seasons (9th in 2004 and 6th in 2005).
Last year, the King was almost an afterthought (relatively speaking) as the MVP featured a two horse race between triple double machine, Russell Westbrook, and the newly converted combo guard, James Harden. LeBron actually didn’t even finish in the top three, as Kahwi Leonard squeezed past him for the final seat at the inaugural NBA Awards Presentation. So, why am I so sure The Chosen One will be The Most Chosen One this season? Why am I so bullish that the King will get his fifth MVP crown? Why will LBJ be so damn Valuable this year? Here’s 5 Reasons…
1. Kyrie Might Not Be Around
Even though it’s looking more and more like LeBron and Kyrie might be spending an awkward training camp together in a month or so, there’s still the very real possibility that Uncle Drew could be elsewhere either before the season starts or by the trade deadline. And, even if he isn’t, chances are that his ongoing saga will be a distraction that LeBron will have to overcome, limiting his ability to just coast through the early half of the season. For the sake of argument, let’s say Kyrie does get moved sometime before February. Many of the speculative trades that have been circulated don’t necessarily include a premier level point guard in return for the Cavs. Eric Bledsoe is probably the cream of the trade crop as far as veteran ball-handlers go, and more often than not, the rumored targets for the wine & gold have included young wings (Andrew Wiggins, Josh Jackson, Jayson Tatum) or bigs (Kristaps Porzingis). If a trade like this goes down, guess who’s going to be handling the ball more than ever? That’s right… LeBron. Sure, Derrick Rose is on the team… as are Jose Calderon and Kay Felder. But, if you thought the James Harden experiment at PG last season was revelatory… just wait for this James at the one. It’s not to say that LBJ hasn’t been the primary ball-handler for this team for stretches in the past, but the absence of Kyrie could just provide him with the challenge of spending a season emulating Magic Johnson in earnest. Russ showed averaging a triple double was a reality… LeBron could take it to the next level. Heck, he almost did last year, averaging 26.4 ppg, 8.6 rpg and 8.7 apg…
2. Other Guys Teamed Up
Last summer, when Kevin Durant bolted OKC for the greener pastures of Golden State, he gained himself a perennial shot at a championship. What he lost (aside from the respect of more than a few media pundits at the time) was his shot at perennial MVP awards. After a few years of playing second fiddle to LeBron in the voting, KD finally snagged his lone trophy in 2014. Then, he got hurt. And now, he splits his MVP votes with teammate (and two time MVP) Steph Curry. Yes, he missed a month or so of the season last year, but his stats were still some of the best of his career. It was good for a tie for 9th place with Anthony Davis. Curry also lost some of his MVP sheen, falling to 6th in the voting after his two consecutive awards (the last he won unanimously). Point being, the Warriors are essentially a team of All-Stars now (including Draymond Green and Klay Thompson), so no one guy has to carry them. They play a game that is fundamentally team oriented, so barring injury or circumstance, it’s much less likely any future MVP’s will find their way to the Bay Area. The guy who benefitted from Durant’s departure, was the eventual 2017 MVP, Russ Westbrook. Russ channeled all of his anger and aggression into jamming the stat sheets, while putting the undermanned Thunder on his back to drag them into the playoffs. That won’t be quite the case this year, as Russ now has Paul George to run with, who will certainly cut into his solo act. Meanwhile, the MVP runner-up, James Harden, will also have to share some of his ball-handling duties with new arrival, Chris Paul. Not to mention, other stars flooded from the East to the West this off-season, providing even more of a spotlight on what LeBron will be up to over the course of the season. His biggest competition might come from other centerpiece guys like Kawhi Leonard, John Wall and Giannis Antetokounmpo.
3. Another Way To Chase The Ghost
LeBron has been on the record about this…
“My motivation is this ghost I’m chasing. The ghost played in Chicago.”
Mostly, you’d have to believe that he’s talking about championships when he says this. However, given that it’s already impossible to match MJ’s Finals record, and that it’s getting awfully challenging for LeBron to even match the number of titles His Airness locked down, a more achievable milestone is to match him in MVP trophies. After all, LBJ only needs one more of those to equal MJ’s total (not to mention Bill Russell’s who almost doubled MJ’s championship tally). Why not channel all of his energy, ability, annoyance and chutzpah into equalling Michael in this impressive achievement. Jordan won his fifth and final MVP Award in 1998, at age 34, during what would be his last season as a Bull before retiring (he’d come back three years later for two seasons with Washington). LeBron will turn just 33 before this season is over, so he’d have the chance to beat MJ to his own fifth trophy. As we’ve seen, nobody finds ways to self-motivate than LeBron… and nothing gets him going quite like chasing after Mike.
4. The Uncertainty Of The Future
As referenced above, LeBron will turn 33 this year… and Father Time is still unbeaten. The window where LBJ will be considered the top of the NBA mountain is in it’s downward motion. He’ll likely still be a top ten player even when he decides to hang up whatever version of his signature Nike’s are around then, but his time as a true MVP candidate is waning. This year is most likely his last, best chance at running down the trophy if he so chooses. The other factor beyond his own longevity as a player, is the uncertainty that faces his role in the Cavalier franchise going forward. The Kyrie turmoil aside, there are plenty of rumblings and speculation that this season could mark the end once again for the King in the Land. Personally, I believe he’ll stay and retire as the face of the organization, yet, if he does get tempted to spend his twilight years building banana boat squads in Texas or Los Angeles, etc., he’ll be creating a similar problem for himself that KD did by joining the Dubs. If you have a team with four or five current and former All-Stars (say LBJ, Melo, CP3, DWade and another dude), how do any of them separate out as MVP candidates? There’s just not enough onus on one guy’s shoulders to get the job done. If he prefers to sign a max deal to remain/retire in Cleveland… there may still be one or two more chances for an MVP season, however, that largely depends on who and what they get in return for Kyrie going forward (if they trade him). Bottom line… the time to win an MVP is now… because after 2018, time is no longer really on LBJ’s side.

5. Because Allen Iverson Says So
Okay… I don’t have all the answers, but The Answer has spoken. Talking to the media at the BIG3’s stop in Seattle this weekend, the 2001 MVP picked LeBron as his choice to win the 2018 MVP Award.
Now, according to Odds Shark, LeBron has only the fourth best odds to win the award for this upcoming season (behind Russell Westbrook, Kevin Durant and Kawhi Leonard), but odds be damned… I see no reason not to roll with AI!
Let’s get the games started already… and GO CAVS!
Does Boston have anyone remotely in a class with LeBron that can get a lead near the end of a game, setting up Kyrie to go into his supercloser role? Or will Kyrie reprise his early leader of the Cavs role from before LeBron returned? We will see.
Well, if I had to guess, based on trading Irving to the only team that could push us in the east while they give us their one defensive liability probably means James told Gilbert he was gone next year. That likely lends credence that Gilbert ruined his relationship with James again from his prior offseason actions. The pick is fine. I would rather have a young star that could help us next year instead of hedging for full rebuild with a pick that even if the nets have the worst record could still easily be out of the top 3.… Read more »
Hello! This probably has ZERO to do with what LeBron told anyone. Altman made what he thought was the best trade. It is 50-50 which team it helps more. Lots of early second guessing is that the Cavs won the trade big, and IT might well be better than KI this year. A big part of what LeBron will do depends on how the team’s management is looking, and so far it is looking pretty good. The pick is likely to be looking very good next year.
I have never been a fan of IT, but everyone must admit that he gives 110% all the time. For example, the playoffs three years ago when he tried to steal a ball from behind a guy inbounding. Can he open things up for the Cav’s three point shooters?
Zizic was the best big man in the ABA — the Adriatic Basketball Association — according to boston.com. And then he moved to Turkey so he could [COLS DON’T READ THIS] play for David Blatt.
https://www.boston.com/sports/boston-celtics/2017/06/16/meet-celtics-prospect-ante-zizic
Maybe Dan will hire Blatt again…he hired Brown twice…i think Dan thrives on chaos, like Trump…do it, Dan…not enough chaos lately…
Does anyone actually believe you can play Isiah Thomas in the playoffs and win? He no can defend. Irving was bad on d. Thomas might as well not even be counted on that end.
IT is the worst defender in the league. Well he may be ahead of Kay Felder.
No, you can’t play him. In the Celtics series, the Cavs were playing 5 on 4 on offense when Thomas was on the floor.
What other short players are available via trade?
I think most of the really short guys are in the D league for some mysterious reason…
Maybe Gilbert is just thinking longer-term than the rest of us, and he’s already pre-tanking for 2019.
https://twitter.com/Reflog_18/status/900133639861796866
if we trade irving to boston for thomas, crowder, and a pick i will be UPSET.
get tatum in that deal unless it’s multiple first round picks.
It’s already done…
Prepare to be upset…they also got a Euro big who may someday play in the NBA…
Unless Zizic immediately becomes the next Zinger, this may be worse than the Harper-Ferry trade. Though as Gordon pointed out, the draft pick is a wild card.
That’s just absurd.
IT+Crowder > Bledsoe
Brooklyn pick easily could be > Jackson
Everyone would have been OK with Bledsoe + Jackson for Kyrie. Brooklyn’s pick will have more value during the season than Jackson has now. Brooklyn will be the worst team in the league. It’s basically a guaranteed top 3 pick (I understand I’m misusing “guaranteed”).
This could end up being a home run trade for us.
I don’t think the 2018 draft is as encouraging as 2017.
Also true.
I don’t think Nets will be as bad as many people assume…bad yes, not worst in league, imo…
Thomas is terrible in the playoffs. You can’t play 4 on 5 on d and win in the playoffs. Yes he is worse on d than Kyrie. Why would you think it is guaranteed? Even if they have the worst record they could still drop to 4.
Name the last time the team with the worst record ended up drafting 4th?
IT: worthless in the playoffs.
Crowder: coming off his one decent shooting season in 6 or 7 years in the league.
Zizic: a Euro mystery project.
I grant you the draft pick could salvage it in the long run. But that doesn’t help win now with LeBron.
Maybe Gilbert is secretly a Celtics fan.
Please tell me we have a deal worked out already to move IT on somewhere else.
Can likely trade him for Dion…
The Pacers GM thought Dan could’ve gotten a better deal / s
You should tweet that at Gilbert
Haha
SELL THE TEAM… SELL THE TEAM!!!
This isn’t the worst trade since we got Brooklyn’s unprotected pick. That can easily be #1 overall.
We have to move it this season to get another star. If you do that, we’re actually better. Say Brooklyn pick for PG13 or Boogie. Then you improved your squad.
With that said, we suck for not getting Tatum or Brown along with the Brooklyn pick.
I doubt Gilbert moves the pick. No guarantee it is even in the top 4
Note to JOHN B: Gilbert is not the GM.
Says who?
I think the cavs won a championship in spite of Gilbert. Any owner would spend for 2 years to have the value of their franchise tripled by appeasing LBJ. Gilbert’s spending means nada.
Well, at least Felder is expendable now…
LBJ isn’t staying now. I am calling it. Why would he?
I assume Cavs were thinking he wasn’t staying, anyway, but agree, lesser chances now…
Bet Crowder is pissed…but he’s always pissed…
The Indians better beat the Sox tonight.
https://twitter.com/ShamsCharania/status/900136127180550145
So much for an easy trip back to the finals. Gilbert is basically Jimmy Haslam with more luck. The guy disgusts me. He should sell the team to someone that is competent.
Good thing Gilber didn’t want to pay Griff – Griff would have never had the imagination to pull off this deal…
RIP Dan Gilbert GM…
https://twitter.com/GoodmanESPN/status/900135459510243332
Lol….seriously…
What will Bill Simmons say? (After he is finished furiously pleasuring himself, anyway)
Dan Gilbert… laughingstock of the NBA
https://twitter.com/WindhorstESPN/status/900135004868665349
Celtics may win the East this year. I doubt it, but they have a much better chance.
Cavs getting Nets unprotected 2018 pick in deal being discussed, according to McTen.
So they can draft Bennett 2.0.
Hope so – Bennett is a BEAST…
https://twitter.com/mcten/status/900134744553385989
man i hope this is just a mind game
I refuse to believe the cavs are this dumb. You’re giving boston the final piece to dethrone the king.
Kyrie for Boogie – lets make magic
Cavs might not be this dumb… but clearly @CavsDan is…
Stupid is as stupid does…
Smurf rights…
https://twitter.com/BobbyMarks42/status/900133268506279938
Has a team ever traded a superstar to the team immediately behind them in the conference?
I hope this is just him fishing for the better deal from Phoenix… but that’s probably a pipe dream…
It seems more like Gilbert is squatting down and defecating on his own team. Dumb and probably means LBJ is truly leaving. It’s a panic trade from an extraordinarily reactionary man who clearly has extremely poor organizational and personnel management skills
Cavs D should be really good this year /////ssss
IT, Crowder, Tatum, Brooklyn pick
I could stomach that. You can turn Tatum or the Brooklyn pick into a stud at the deadline (i.e., Cousins or PG).
Just have to make sure you get Tatum or the Brooklyn pick. If you’re a real G, you get both.
Gilbert knows nothing about basketball so I doubt he pushes for Tatum or the pick. He is incompetence defined.
https://twitter.com/Reflog_18/status/900131222709567488
If this Celtics thing is true Gilbert is a moron who is an awful manager. Quicken loans must be a joke internally. Seriously. This trade couldn’t be more incompetent. If Gilbert actually nixed a George Bledsoe trade for this, he has to be the least savvy owner in sports. No one could defend Gilbert if this goes down and be taken seriously.
He’s definitely a moron about basketball. He’s ‘smart’ because he’s paying Lebron? Every GM in the league would have maxed Lebron the last three years.
Yep. Paying into the tax every year in order to have the value of your franchise tripled seems like an obvious investment. I cannot figure out how this guy lucked into his money. Predatory business practices probably helped.
Dan Gilberts ultimate plan is to get players as short as him, so he can scrimmage with them.
Danny Ainge is smarter than Dan Gilbert I guess… smdh…
Who would have guessed?
Interesting… but moronic reason to do it…
https://twitter.com/BobbyMarks42/status/900127203500990464
If that’s what you’re doing, my guess is LeBron has indicated he’s not coming back. It would essentially end any chance of another title in Cleveland. It would almost feel like Gilbert shooting the organization in the head just to spite LeBron.
Gilbert sucks. He seems more and more incompetent with everything we hear. We have an arrogant and ignorant little troll man as an owner.
You have to get Tatum and/or next year’s Brooklyn pick. You HAVE to.
https://twitter.com/Reflog_18/status/900126552524025856
Hahahah
https://twitter.com/ElusiveGin/status/900127046394814464
https://twitter.com/ASherrodblakely/status/900125979347234816
Now we are trading him for a 1 year rental on IT, a guy you can’t win with in the playoffs because he’s 5’4, a try hard, and a 19 year old Croatian who will probably never play a combined 100 minutes in the NBA.
Thomas is at least 5’5″…
https://twitter.com/sreekyshooter/status/900123849152315392
https://twitter.com/richeisen/status/900125731979755521
Lol at trading for the one year rent-a-smurf if this is true… Jesus
If this is true, why on earth would we even trade him? This would be awful.
So… does @CavsDan just want to corner the market on 5’8 PGs?
https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/900121788876824576
Barf!!!!!
Eff Crowder… give me Tatum or Brown!!!
Ante Zizic is apparently the young guy we would get. LOL I’d stop watching the Cavs.
I think Celtic fans like him, but they think all their ‘prospects’ are future All Stars…
Just doesn’t fit anything we want to do. We don’t have 3-4 years for the guy to become serviceable if we want to win titles.
Inside scoop is that Celtics want Felder as IT replacement. Ainge will nix deal if no Felder.
Only way I do this trash trade is if mega draft picks are involved.
realgm with an article saying Cavs/Celtics discussing a Kyrie for IT trade. Are you kidding me?
I don’t get it
Unless they get one of their young guys (Brown or Tatum), a Brooklyn pick and another usable piece (Crowder, Smart), then that’s stupid…
Yup… EG nailed it.
Yep. If Brooklyn’s pick isn’t part of this, we blew it.
They need to get Brown or I’ll say it’s horrible. I don’t see them trading Brown, either…Ainge and most Celtic fanboys think he’s Larry Bird…
IT, Crowder and picks. Cols’ dream trade. Good thing Griffin told Gilbert to stuff his GM job.
Good stuff, EG. Definitely like your thinking. LeBron might have the heaviest load in the NBA next year, especially if Kyrie is gone and he is still at the peak of his powers.
Thanks Nate! I just think LeBron is at his most dangerous and dominant when he’s angry about something or trying to prove something to the world… this season is shaping up to have the perfect concoction of both things…
At this point I’m getting happy that we may keep Kyrie and run it back with improved backup PG and more athletic wings in Greeen and Cedi.
You’ll take IT and like it…too bad Griff told Gilbert to shove it…
So where did we land on the Jazz giving up Hood and Rubio for Kyrie? Yes, no, no way no way, or what?
No. That’s terrible. I love Rubio, but no.
Even if you add a pick? I don’t really know that we can expect better than that.
While Cavs’ fans might overvalue Kyrie, it is not by that much. He is one of the best players available in trade in a long time, and undoubtedly LOTS of teams would love to have him, and are working quietly to see if they can pull it off. So far, they are coming out with their C and maybe B offers, in hopes the Cavs will panic and they can steal him. At some point, they will start to come out with their A offers.
I think Cavs fans, particularly this blog, are undervaluing Kyrie quite a bit.
More than most fans, we have seen the Good Kyrie, and also the Bad Kyrie.
Sure, but smarter people like Zach Lowe have written how important Irving’s skills are in the playoffs and how there just aren’t many guys who can do what he does. In the regular season it doesn’t matter as much and we suffer for it while guys whose skills are not as great beat up on the lower competition.
Zach Lowe also said this year that Wiggins will definitely be an All-Star in the next few years. Do you agree with Lowe on this point? Or just on points that you already have strong priors?
Yeah, I agree that Wiggins is still young enough to improve. It’s no guarantee but he could easily be an all star
Right. That is the good Kyrie. No one is denying it. There is also the Flat Earth Kyrie, and the No D Kyrie.
Nice article man, and you make some really good points that Harden and Westbrook will have to share the spotlight with Paul and George. That will probably help LeBron the most. I don’t doubt that he can win the award if he wants to, but he’s settled in on chill mode the past three regular seasons. It might be tough for him to get up for a Thursday night game in Sacramento, etc. when he knows he has to go until June. You said it a few weeks ago on the thread, but Kyrie being here for camp seems like… Read more »
Don’t believe we missed Bron’s apex. The last two years were it.
Averaging a triple double in the finals is quite an apex I think. We may have missed his most athletic apex, however, but not his most productive.
LeBron averaged 34 pts, 12 rebs, 10 assists, 1.4 steals and 1 block in the Finals. On 56%, 39% from three.
Durant averaged 35 pts, 8 rebs, 5 assists, 1 steal, and 1.6 blocks. On 55%, 47% from three.
So for the 6th straight year, LeBron was the best player in the Finals. He’s at his peak right now.
Thanks Cory! Yeah, I think KI will be here… at least until mid-December or February…
If Lebron plays hard, Cavs should win 60 games in east, assuming decent returns for Kyrie. So, if Lebron leads a 60 win team, he will be MVP. It might actually take 55-57 wins to get #1 seed in east given that celts have improved, Cavs may finally see value in getting that home seed.
The cool thing is teachers don’t use LeBron as a lesson of how to be a coward.
Cols! Take your meds, RIGHT NOW!
Lol, do you read your own posts. They are very immature and frankly juvenile
You are getting wacky. LeBron playing hard to the the top top seed in the East is good only for the Warriors. LeBron should get the MVP because he is the best player, not because he runs up the score on mid majors.
MVP award is for regular season though. So, unless Lebron shows like he cares about reg season as much as Harden or Westbrook, he shouldn’t get it right. Same with warriors stars, they shouldn’t get either.
I haven’t been seeing much of Harden and Westbrook in the Finals.
The objective difference is the talent on either team. Put one of Durant or Curry on the Cavs and they don’t replicate the cavs success, period. Put James in place of one of those two on the warriors and they are as good or better. Argue against that all you want. You would be lying to yourself and deep down you know it or you are as delusional as cols. Put Harden, Westbrook or anyone else on the cavs and you have the same result no matter how hard they are trying. The cavs are not good without LBJ. They… Read more »
That would be cool. However, I would rather he saved energy for the playoffs. Usually the MVP takes the best record or a Herculean effort such as Westbrook last year. I think a Herculean effort during the regular season is not in this team’s best interests.
LeBron has been the MVP the last three years. We’ve witnessed this. He’s the only guy that can take a random team of whatever and mold them into contenders.
I watched a few Big3 games last night – just terrible basketball. Tons of chucking up awful shots and grey hair. Might as well watch YMCA.
Nice article – interesting points. I think the big deterrent is LeBron’s body management regime; I think he’s more interested in all the longevity based awards (# of points scored, # of assists, etc) both in reg season and playoffs to risk a flame-out season in a chase for MVP. But let’s see!
Is that what Chauncy Billups is doing? What a tool!
