Live Thread: Magic @ Cavs
2017-10-21The Cavs get to play their first back-to-back of the season tonight at the Q. Thankfully, it is against the Magic, who are coming off of a loss to the Nets. The Magic still haven’t turned a corner, and will be without two of their most promising players players : Elfrid Payton (Hamstring) and Adreian Payne (Left Hand).
Derrick Rose will miss the game for the Cavs with an ankle sprain. Jose Calderon is slated to get the start.
Three Things To Watch
1. Nikola Vucevic is the Magic’s best scorer. This is the first time this season the Cavs are playing a team with a center that’s the focus of the offense. Kevin Love will see some time on Vucci Mane. This will be a good test to see how focused he his on the defensive end because Nikola is a jack of most trades offensively, he has a bevy of post moves and can can an 18-footer.
2. The Cavs have actually been running some more more based stuff to date this season. Dwyane Wade and Jae Crowder have shown the ability to work off the ball fairly efficiently. Same with Kyle Korver. Tyronn Lue should keep trying to work some of these off-ball motions into the offense. The team isn’t going to be as deadly with the Le-Drive and Dish offense as it was last season just because they don’t have as many shooters. Any new ways to create open shots will help the Cavs greatly.
3. With Derrick Rose out, Wade, and Jeff Green will have even more chances to handle the ball. They need to show some discipline and pass the ball when nothing is happening. If they can limit their dribbling to running after a rebound, the Cavs will be in a great spot all evening.
The Magic are not a strong team, but the Cavs need to respect them. This should be a simple win and the starters should get much of the fourth off. I’m picking the Cavs, 123-90.
So Giannis wow….just wow. Talk about a torrid start. I really don’t see him slowing down either. He seems to be nigh unguardable in the paint now. We certainly couldn’t. If he had a better team….yikes. He may be ahead of schedule in getting into the top five this year. Lebron, Durant, Curry, Kawhi, Westbrook/Harden, Giannis. He may be jumping Harden and Westbrook on my list by the end of the year. Someone said he will never be the best player in the league on this blog. Not sure about that considering he is doing this at age 22 without… Read more »
So he also had the game winning steal and dunk and then blocked would have been an easy game tying layup at the end of regulation. Ridiculous.
Game winning layup
Cheers is a fun show.
What about Wings?
I forgot about that one. Not as fun as cheers.
Gonna be embarrassing for Curry when the league orders him into anger-management therapy.
Dude went to the line 13 times and gets ejected. What a waste.
Was that the first time two MVPs were ejected from the same team in the same game?
No matter what just be glad we aren’t fans of the mouth guard thrower and the coward loser
Wth Durant showing off the ring sign to fans while he gets tossed out. Dude you didn’t earn that ring.
Hahahaha. He is the laughingbag of the nba.
neeeeeeeeeeexxt
The fraudulent fraudiest fraud threw his mouth guard again.
this game was over as soon as it started. Magic were on fire and Cavs looked disinterested the whole game….shit happens….just move on….and on to the next one….we have 79 more of these…if Cavs are getting crushed like this in March/April then maybe there should be concern. But in October? its okay.
Yep.
Shump earned more time. Love looked good. LeBron continues to look great. Crowder. Smith and Korver need to work on it a bit.
More time for Shump is insane. One hot night from 3 doesn’t make him a different player. There’s a reason the Cavs couldn’t find a team to take him off their hands this summer.
At least he played good this game to boost his stock come December. Now he neds to sit down the next cuz it might plummet down.
Well. Warriors lose. Yankees lose and I’m calling it a good sports night.
Hmm. It would be awesome if the Yankees lose. That is jumping the gun a bit though considering it is the bottom of the 7th.
I’m so old I can remember when Durant was a well respected player. Now everyone just laughs at him.
If Rose is out, they should start Bron at the 1
Nah. Shump earned it tonight
He isn’t a point guard. So you would rather start shump over Smith or Korver?
Shump showed up tonight. Smith and Korver did not.
One game. Shump is your delly. You seem to defend him as irrationally as you dislike delly. He was not abjectly terrible. He was 5 of 14 with 4 threes, all but one coming in garbage time. You tout Korver and smith all last season and Love shump all last season despite his horrendous performance in the regular season and finals. It doesn’t add up.
No fricking way.
Hahahaha. Warriors suck.
Zizic looks good. Young too. That trade keeps getting better.
Shump was great this game. Love and Leb too. Wade was OK. Everyone else was garbage.
Crowder was off due to some dumb offensive fouls. As for everyone else, there were a few missed threes but what the cavs ran tonight looked nothing like last night except for the second quarter when they got a bunch of off ball movement thru the lane, a la last night. Otherwise there was a lot of standing around in the first and third and some disjointed sets.
Shump had the worst play of the game. An inexplicably dumb pull up three that led to a four/five point swing.
We were atrocious on defense. I expect nothing more from this team on back to backs. However, I credit the magic for taking advantage. They moved the ball and themselves beautifully tonight and had us three steps behind on multiple possessions where they whipped the Ball inside and out. Vucevic has been a monster on offense thus far. I still can’t figure why they didn’t put him in a hundred pick and rolls with James/Wade. Pretty certain he would have gotten torched, at least based on our history of doing that to him.
Zizic with some nice hustle at the end.
Cedi looks terrible. Gonna be a red shirt season for him I think.
Yep! Let’s judge him on a few minutes of garbage time in a blowout loss in game 3 of the season. Totally legit assessment.
Huh? You see that sweet setup for Channing? Picking up an offensive foul on Simmons? Another good defensive closeout? Are you secretly Corby Altman with no player evaluation skills?
I’d rather take my lumps with Cedi than play Jeff Green or Calderon
My A-Hole friend told a black couple that I hate Jeff Green, in the parking garage, as the elevator door was closing. As the elevator was closing I said, I also hate Shump. I wish I could have explained further.
Yeah. Maybe not a great story to tell.
I truly apologize for being insensitive?
Lol.
What are the odds Lue could be fired this year?
How is this Lues fault?
Say what?
Zero in the middle of the season. That would be a disaster in an LBJ free agency year. I could see it if they somehow crapped out in the playoffs or literally lost by 25 ppg every game to GS in the finals.
New CtB poll: Should Cavs forefeit the second night of back-to-backs rather than wear themselves down?
I think this is meant in jest, but in all serious, yeah. See how far they can push Silver. Go all the wayPop with the Geriatric Spurs players 2014 onward.
Maybe play the youngins.
I have to admit Green was ok yesterday. When he cuts, plays d, and at least tries to rebound he is serviceable. Anything more or less…same with shump. If shump cuts and only shoots open threes and tries 100% on d while not making mental mistakes he becomes a serviceable player.
I vote for just forfeiting. I will never attend a home game that is a back to back
I’m mad at Crowder and J.R. and Korver sucking tonight. Shump love and Leb kept us around for a bit but no one else could hit a shot.
Green doesn’t box out at all
Or make good passes.
That is vintage green.
At least I get to see Osman play.
Games like this happen. As usual it means nothing. Move on.
It means they’re old and Corby Altman sucks.
You realize the three oldest teams are also three of the best? Cavs. Warriors and Spurs.
What does that have to do with the fact that the Cavs didn’t sign anyone who can shoot other than Korver?
Well. You can believe that this team is great like the one last night on the road against a good team. Or you can think they suck.
I’ll choose that they are still great and had a bad night. This seems obvious unless you actually think the Cavs suck. Make a good choice.
The truth, as always is somewhere in the middle.
Nah. The truth is we are great and no one can beat us in seven games ezcevery t the warriors.
Ok, drunky
You are the only person I think that has mentioned them sucking.
Panic already, not surprised. I can hear you hyperventilating from here.
Time to call it a night. LeBron just going for his stats now.
I meant to comment on last nights game – Korver played great defense last night in addition to his shooting.
I would sit the starters after 3 minutes unless they make a significant run. Even then I might have rested them. No point in risking injury in a meaningless back to back at the start of the season. This team is just not going to be great on travel back to backs I think
GREEN IS NOT A GOOD THREE POINT SHOOTER!
I barfd
I’m leaving and will never attend another back-2-back with this old team
Crappy game to attend…
Orlando has a coherent offense and the Cavs just don’t.
Can’t figure out why they never put Vucevic in a ton of pick and rolls.
Cavs don’t run pick and roll very much this year.
Wouldn’t Wade benefit against guys like Fournier and Vucevic that scenario?
Cavs are gonna struggle on back end of back to backs. Lack of shooting is hurting right now.
You keep saying this, but wha shooting did we lose from last year? Irving is the only guy. We kept JR and Korver.
Replacing Irving’s minutes with Rose/ Wade/ whoever is a large loss in shooting…
THOMAS is coming back soon.
I will believe it when I see it. I haven’t heard any timetable whatsoever, just that he has started shooting in limited time, which doesn’t mean a ton
In January, maybe. How healthy and effective will he be? He’s a huge question mark.
Hadn’t heard a January timetable. That would be nice.
We don’t play Frye which was a huge part of our shooting last year as was Deron Williams. We sacrificed threes for possibly better defense which hasn’t shown up tonight. Not having Irving is huge too considering we replaced him with guys (Rose and Wade) that can’t shoot or realistically space the floor because defenses don’t respect their shot. Crowder having an off night didn’t help. However the cavs offense looked stagnant and out of sorts for the 1st and third quarters.
Frye, Irving, Jefferson, DWill, James Jones, Derrick Williams…
Shump +11 and Wade -4 are our two best plus minus wise.
Don’t think that means anything tonight since James is -22 and Love is -12.
Any one wearing a Cavs jersey other than James and Love should be ashamed.
Why? They aren’t allowed to lose?
Lose yes. Not down 27 to crappy Orlando. What we are watching is just awful
Meh. We are old. They are young and hungry in the regular season. We probably just are going to be terrible on back to backs. It doesn’t mean all that much.
Ok. Throw in the towel. Sit the starters in the fourth. Not coming back down 24-25 in a quarter. Chalk it up to being old on a back to back against a young fast paced team.
Lol. Green just got smoked by Simmons
