Can the Cleveland Cavaliers win two in a row? Now that their four-game losing streak is a thing of the past, LeBron James and Company will attempt to get back to .500 with a Sunday afternoon game against the Atlanta Hawks.
While the Hawks played the Cavaliers extremely well last season, this isn’t last year’s team. With a 1-8 record, the Hawks are currently tied with the Sacramento Kings for the second-worst record in the NBA. Still, they could provide a test for the Cavaliers’ perimeter defense. Dennis Schroeder is averaging 21 points a game, and Taurean Prince is shooting 47% from three this season. Prince continues to make strides in his second year, and looks like a real building block for this team. While Kent Bazemore has struggled with his shot thus far, both he and Marco Belinelli are the kind of veteran wings who cannot be ignored.
Still, this game will come down to effort for the Cavaliers. If they play with intensity the entire game, they’ll likely win. If they loaf through the early part of the game like they have so many times this season, then they’ll give the Hawks confidence and the chance to pull off the upset. Hopefully we’ll see the Cavaliers who have shown up against the Bucks, Celtics, and Wizards this season.

I could see most of their guys sustaining it. I mean a guy like Smart is the definition of a motor guy. The other guys are super young, so I doubt they run out of energy. Unless Horford and Morris run out of gas, I don’t see a huge falloff. I don’t think they have had the most difficult schedule though. The one guy I could see falling off defensively is Kyrie. I kind of don’t see him continuing to force turnovers at the rate he is now.
It looks like Irving and the starters have been playing about 27 minutes a game. Even against the tough teams.

I mean, the Hawks. The Hawks, really? Really…the Hawks? A loss to the Hawks where you give up 117 points and two 37 point quarters to the 26th rated team in offensive efficiency. Brother. The previously 1 and 8 Hawks, who had lost 8 straight. What is happening? It wasn’t even a back to back. Agree with how poorly the Cavs are playing defense and how old they look at times. This, plus the lack of effort, is very frustrating. BUT – there are no other good teams in the East. With LBJ, they still have a cakewalk to the finals. It might have been interesting if Hayward didn’t get injured, but that is a moot point now. Who is going to beat LBJ 4 out of 7 from the East. I hear you, and yes there is hope left. This team will improve somewhat with addition of a healthy IT. But playing the way they currently are will not get them through the East.
True if this team plays this poorly defensively, that is a Everest sized mountain to overcome. Even if they improve defensively, they likely aren’t going to be better than the 20th to 25th best team in defensive efficiency, and that is what I expect their playoff peak would be I think with their current personnel. I don’t see Rose, IT, Wade, Shumpert, Frye, the rookies, Love, and even maybe Smith this year being able to get significantly better on defense for varying reasons. The East is plenty better than before and all it will take is for Boston(or Wiz, Bucks) to bring in a solid player during the midseason trade and the Cavs are done. LeBron won’t be able to put the whole team on his back like he did back in ’07. That was a decade ago. He can’t do that anymore.
If the bucks make a move, and Parker comes back healthy and playing at the production he was before or better they could be really good a lot sooner than people think. Right now, they just don’t have enough around Giannis without Parker.
Didn’t get to see the game but seems like a bit of the same. – no D and crappy rotations.

Lenny was plenty lame. Recall the Cavs losing a playoff series because Lenny played a redheaded stiff from ND because he didn’t like Danny Ferry, who never got off the bench. Ferry was plenty good the following year for the Spurs, who won the title with Ferry.
