Recap: Cavs 104, Knicks 101 (Or, Mr. Fourth Korver)
2017-11-14This roller coaster game provided a little bit of everything for the Cleveland Cavaliers. At one point in the third quarter, I would have turned ot off if I wasn’t recapping it. The Cavs displayed numerous levels of effort throughout the night which continues to be frustrating as a fan. They seem to be able to compete at a high level when when they want to, but haven’t put it together for an entire game yet this season. Coming off a tough fought win against the Mavericks, the Cavs seemed poised and ready to take care of the Knicks. The team was relaxed and ready to roll Monday morning as shown in the viral video Lebron posted to social media, which showed he and his teammates riding the New York subway back to the hotel from practice.
The game started off with Porzingis getting an easy mid range jumper over Crowder. He is such a bad matchup for most teams in the league as his size and range are a lethal combination that makes him nearly unstoppable. However, the Cavs brought the defensive intensity and the most active hands I’ve seen in quite some time getting deflections and steals on a number of possessions in the first quarter. Crowder did the best he could against Porzingis and drew an early offensive foul. A few possessions later, Crowder went strong to the hole and drew a key second foul against the Zinger with 8:22 left in the quarter, and completed the three point play (queued up below).
JR Smith looked to be enjoying his time against his former team as he knocked down shots early, was very active on the defensive end, and helped the Cavs run out to a quick 16-9 lead. Hornacek rallied his troops after a timeout and the Knicks fought their way back as Cleveland fell back into their lazy and turnover prone ways. Towards the end of the first quarter, DWade found LeBron for a nice dunk and conveniently Frank Ntilikina was nearby afterwards trying to receive the inbound. Lebron stood his ground and it led to this altercation below. The first quarter ended with the good guys up 25-22.
The Knicks came alive in the second quarter as they took exception to Lebron showing up their teammate. Frank Ntilikina was a very active defender and forced a nice steal against JR Smith and almost had a clear path foul. This caused a rather long stoppage in the game which gave Lebron some additional real time rest. There was a scary play involving Jeff Green where he was pretty much tackled on a drive by Kyle O’Quinn. It looked pretty bad but Jeff was able to get up and walk off the court under his own power and returned later. There wasn’t a foul on the play, but rather a tech…on Isiah Thomas! Thomas had some words with official, Tony Brother’, and was was very engaged on the tonight. Thomas looks to be chomping at the bit to return.
Lebron was able to rest from the end of the first until 6:10 left in the second quarter. At this point, the game was tied at 29. A few turnovers, a tech on Wade and the porous defense attributed to a 14-2 run for the Knicks which culminated with Tim Hardaway Jr. knocking down a three and showing off his dance moves directed at the Cavs’ bench. Cleveland struggled to get anything going on offense for the remainder of the quarter and the Knicks were up 51-38 going into half. As you can see in the shot chart below, Cleveland was missing everything and the group of Lebron, Crowder, Wade and Korver all were -10 or more for the period. Keep this in mind for the fourth.
The second half started off better for Cleveland as Lebron found Crowder for a nice spot up three. Jae was more aggressive on the offensive end but there were still moments of hesitation. He had a few open catch and shoot threes that he passed up or dribbled into when he didn’t need to. The Cavs got as close as seven points early in the third but Iman Shumpert continued to contribute very little to the offense and things became stagnant. The Knick lead extended to 17 points at 47-64 and Ty Lue went with the hockey lineup substitution and benched all of the starters.
I was hoping for a Cedi sighting with Cleveland up 20, but instead his appearance came with them down 17. This unit brought some energy, mainly from Korver and Cedi but struggled early. Wade and Green bricked a few midrange jumpers, and combined with little ball movement, the Cavs looked like they were ready to throw in the towel. Frye attempted to play defense but was simply overmatched against Kanter’s post moves.
The lead was up to 23 (This is when I was ready to turn it off) before Korver found Cedi on the left corner with a nice cross court pass and Cedi knocked down the spot up three. Wade completed a three point play and things started to look up. However, Frye decided to pull an anti Delly move and took a foul on Ntilikina after a steal although the Cavs defense was already back and the Knicks were in the bonus. Can we somehow trade Shump for Delly please? Frank split the pair and the second unit miraculously managed to cut the lead to 15 by the end of the quarter. 61-76 Knicks.
Interestingly enough, Lue keep this same group of Wade, Korver, Osman, Green and Frye to start the fourth. I am not sure if he thought they gave them the best chance to win or if he was just down with the starters like Love, Crowder and Shump who all struggled tonight. Wade managed to find Korver for a wide open three, but he missed it. Frye was active on the glass and earned a loose ball foul led to Wade hitting a vintage step back jumper. Lebron then checked in for Osman at 10:35 with the game seemingly within reach. Both teams traded baskets for a bit and then Korver saw had a triple drop cutting the lead down to 12.
This led to the most depressing sequence of the Cavs season thus far and made me miss Kyrie the most. Lebron found Korver for a wide open three on the left wing which he bricked. James grabbed the offensive rebound and found Jeff Green wide open in the left corner – another brick. Lebron then grabbed another offensive rebound and found Korver now on the right wing wide open and he missed again. Kyle was active the entire game and covered an amazing amount of ground on this possession, unfortunately the other three guys on the floor just stood around. Kyrie would have hit one of those shots, most likely the Jeff Green corner three. Lebron very visibly slumped his shoulders and head after this possession and it looked to be game over with Cleveland was down 14.
But Tim Hardaway missed an open three at the top of the key after a Cleveland turnover. Lebron found Frye for a left corner three which he nailed. Lue brought JR smith back into the game for Green, now having a lineup of Wade, Lebron, Korver, Frye and Smith, with the Cavs down just 11. Love, Crowder and Shump were MIA the entire 4th quarter.
The teams traded baskets and the lead was 13 before Korver hit another three. Something intriguing developed, as Lebron decided to defend Porzingis and blocked his shot. The crowd at MSG had been on Lebron all night and he looked to be taking it personally. Porzingis continued his flopping ways, which AC was quick to point out on the telecast and drew a couple of cheap fouls but it didn’t translate to points. Lebron then converted a three point play and the lead was down to 7. The Cavs continued to be active on defense with Wade and JR getting a steal and Korver was shooting flames. The lead was down to four but Porzingis hit a triple which seemed to kill the momentum. But on the next possession Korver was the benefactor of a very friendly bounce MSG bounce (shown below). Everything was going right for Kyle as he was 5/8 from three in the fourth and finished with 21 points for the game. 18 of them though came in the fourth, when the Cavs needed them the most.
A couple of stops combined with two three pointers from Smith and Korver managed to cut the lead to two with 3:25 left. Cameras then cut to a pumped up Isiah Thomas on the bench who was fully engaged this entire game. The Cavs play the Celtics at TD Garden on Wednesday January 3rd, I have to imagine IT3 has that game circled to be back for. Knicks pushed the lead to 5 but Porzingis missed three free throws late which kept the game close. He missed both of the freebies after what looked to be an exaggerated flop after Wade hooked him a bit. This may have been a little justice from the basketball gods. Frye then hit a trey to tie the game with two minutes left.
Lebron found JR for an open right corner three but he put a little too much on the shot but Wade was able to grab the offensive board. This brought us the possession that everyone was waiting for. Lebron found himself matched up with the Unicorn one-on-one on the left wing. Lebron opted to dribble back a bit and then nail a step back dagger three on Porzingis seen below.
Cleveland smartly found Korver to nail a few free throws and push his scoring total to 21 (19 on the fourth) and to push the lead to five. Unfortunately, Lebron was fouled down 3 with 4 seconds left and missed both free throws. He managed to grab his own miss and secure the win for the Cavs. The shot chart for the Cavs in the 4th was a much better example of basketball in 2017. I just don’t see how this team eliminates the bad mid range shots with the current roster construction, but things seem to go much better when Korver, Lebron and Smith share the floor.
I think we can all agree with Isaiah Thomas after this win…
Final Thoughts…
- Crowder, Love and Shump all struggled this game and the Cavs still need to find a solution at point guard other than Shump or Rose.
- Yes the Cavs won, but part of me wonders if them losing by 20 tonight would have done more good for the team long term. The pieces don’t seem to fit right now and the team is flawed. This victory was nice, but should it really be this hard?
- Is there anyway to have a starting five that includes Korver, Smith and Lebron? The combination has proven to be deadly late in these games.
- Would it be crazy to try to get Boogie from New Orleans for TT/Love + Cavs or Nets pick? Boogie would allow Cleveland some additional flexibility and I am worried about Love’s contract although it is under the old CBA. The Pelicans are looking decent right now but they are an AD injury away from tanking. Granted, we would then most likely have to try to sign Boogie to the new max, but the Cavs need another big who can roll to the paint and provide some rim protection. Maybe it is Monroe…
Cavs visit the Hornets next on Wednesday (ESPN GAME!) who are dealing with their own fair share of injuries.
Do y’all just want to say FU to Kyrie for all of the sudden caring about defense? Is Brad Stevens that good?
I think he is a very good coach. However, Kyrie trying on d is more him trying to prove people wrong and less stevens.
I think that is.
Now Kyrie has something to prove: the Earth is flat!
It is a lot easier to work hard when you have a noble goal.
Ha yeah. Though clearly he is tuned in and listened to the talk about his game after his trade demand got to be public. Why he didn’t give a damn here, I don’t know. Though, I suppose if you’re surrounded by guys that try on defense nearly every game, it may provide a lot more motivation to try on d than a team full of guys that don’t start trying until the second round of the playoffs or conference finals. I do wonder if the Celtics are as elite defensively when Hayward comes back. The way Brown and Tatum are… Read more »
It helps if other four players on the floor plays D.
i think it’s just that Kyrie is very much woke now…
Charlotte still plays big. Zizic should get some minutes if Lue isn’t crazy.
No panic trades 14 games in. Yes, we have looked bad. But let us remember, Bron missed all of camp, we have 8 new guys, Love is playing a new position, IT hasn’t played yet, TT is out, Rose has missed a handful of games, and Lue is a notoriously slow learner. Let us see how we do over the next 15 games. Schedule will be tougher. If we get to, say, 17 or 18 wins by game 30, I think we will be on track. Trading Korver is insane. As would be a Love/Jordan trade. No more knuckleheads who… Read more »
Lebon quietely leading league in minutes for 14 games cavs played.
http://www.espn.com/nba/statistics/player/_/stat/minutes/sort/minutes
Not news. Bron already answering as usual “Not minutes played but games played.”
Would he be able to take annual sabbatical if his team is just around .500 ?
He only took a “sabbatical” that first year. Since then it’s just been individual games he’s missing.
Would Atlanta do a Bazemore for Shump, Frye and Pick Trade? Would be a nice but expensive two way role player
https://twitter.com/TJDhoops/status/930251921029517312
HaHaHa.
I would put what’s his name, (BD, the Big Doofus), there instead of Frank.
Ringer article arguing there’s no good fit for Love on our team. Thoughts?
Article was so bad. This is an actual quote. It argues for the Cavs to dump Korver for Nerlens, Chandler, or Bizmack The problem is the Cavs are playing such bad defense that every game is a grind, and a trade might be the only way to fix that. There are plenty of shot-blocking 5s available around the league. Nerlens Noel, who has the same agent as LeBron, has fallen out of the rotation in Dallas. If the Cavs want someone more proven, guys like Tyson Chandler, Dewayne Dedmon, and Bismack Biyombo could be had relatively cheaply, as none of… Read more »
Why are so. Many shot blocking fives available? Cause if they can’t switch on the perimeter, or give you any o, they’re useless.
I agree that Korver trade was dumb. But what about D Jordan for Love straight up? Or is our problem entirely perimeter defense at which point we missed the boat already not signing Tucker, Mbah a Moute or, Allen.
The point about Love not being able to stay on the court in finals is disconcerting
Also the point about usage, they need some damn set plays for Love when LeBron sits
They already have Blake who in theory serves the same role but better. I am starting to wonder if the Cavs can somehow snag Noel for their 1st round pick. Would he be a better fit on this team than TT?
No. They’re pretty much the same player, cept noel wants max money.
So I think what you’re is Crowder and TT will determine the success of this team. As well as JRs shooting percentage
Wake up! Half the team is new. It always takes months for a bunch of new guys to jell. When they figure out how to fit in Tristan and Cedi, the athleticism will be much better.
They don’t need any Hail Mary trades.
Love wasn’t the problem in last years finals. He was the Cavs second best player n four of the five games. He just had a bad game five. He won a ship the year before. This is a false narrative.
If Love was healthy, they probably win the 2015 finals too…
Agree with Nate and Joshua.
I don’t agree with getting rid of Korver since he has arguably been the second best player on the team this season, however, something will have to be done with the defense. I don’t think this team can play even average defense against top teams even if they are trying, and for the record I don’t think NY is a top team. They are a middling offensive team even with Porzingis. Cavs just don’t have the personnel. That seriously limits their ceiling on any given night against elite competition. Could they get better even with these guys? Sure, but I… Read more »
I don’t get this though because we replaced Kyrie and RJ with IT and Crowder. On paper of we try our defense should be no worse than last year
The Cavs have better personnel than last year. Last year the won one game in the finals, and could have won more with some better luck and coaching. The current squad has plenty of room to improve on both ends. The sky is not falling.
They have a fair amount of room to improve on offense. They could improve a little defensively with 100% effort all the time. I think their defensive improvement is just very limited though at the end of the day. Wade, Rose, IT aren’t stopping anyone. Shumpert and JR have a track record of losing guys off ball. Love is who he is. Not awful defensively but extremely exploitable if teams want to go at him in certain ways. Crowder is better. TT is a wildcard. Is he the same player? Will remain to be seen. They haven’t been good defensively… Read more »
The Cavs can easily be better than last year’t squad. You are trying to talk yourself out of this.
Dumping Korver would be a disaster unless the Cavs got a guy who can do similar things in return. I don’t read the Ringer, but this sounds as dumb as most of their Cavs articles, just going by summaries posted here.
I just want Shump to focus on one talent for right now:
https://twitter.com/uninterrupted/status/930548616208441345
You want him concentrating on his spitting fire talent?
When IT gets back (& TT) everyone xan return to their comfort zones.
Same starting V with IT for Kyrie. Wade, Korver, Crowder, & Green are the main reserves. With a touch of Rose, Frye, Shump, & Osman. That is your 13 actives. Zizic & Calderon inactive.

Cavs starting to come together a bit. Likely will continue to be inconsistent and hover around .500 until IT and TT come back. After that, I predict we will be a 50-win team and lock down 1 top 3 seed. Plus we have the best player in the world. Great time to be a Cavs fan!
I also love that the Celtics are back to their comfort zone of taking regular season success very seriously. Brad Stevens is right in his wheelhouse in the regular season.
My biggest concern is the defense. I’m not sure how they can get better without making a trade.
Yeah. I think D will get a lot better with time together. Crowder is a good Defender, he is just lost in a new system. And sliding TT back next to Love will help a lot on Defensive glass. Once IT is back, they can do that.
There is plenty to be concerned about, but don’t forget what team LeBron is on. The team might be largely mismatched collection, but there is a lot of talent. This is a chance for Lue to show that he can figure out how to mix and match for success. Having the GOAT provides plenty of time to figure it out.

I agree with much of what has been posted. This team rewarded fans who stuck around, but man did they punish us in the waiting. I think the biggest problem the Cavs face this year is similar to one last year, only it’s worse: they still have only one two-way player (LeBron), and Kyrie’s presence almost made that okay when they were dialed in. I thought Crowder would be, but the Cavs were better off going with their “shooting” lineup during the fourth quarter. Maybe Wade will be once he finds a way to fit into this unstructured offense, confused… Read more »

Did anyone catch Knick fans chanting Kyrie Irving?
Come on, Joshua! It was a fun win, and you say we should have lost by 20 and try to sign Boogie? Get a grip!
Until IT returns and can play real minutes I don’t see how you can’t start Korver. He’s such a potent outside threat he alone changes the spacing with his movement and gravitational pull on the defense. His defense is limited by his lack of lateral quickness, but his team defense IQ and hustle makes him a net plus. Right now he’s the second or third best player on the Cavs, his minutes should reflect that and a starting role could alleviate our horrendous slow starts.
Absolutely horrible game. If it hadn’t been for Korver catching fire in the fourth the Cavs would had lost by 15+. As I said in the live thread, I didn’t like LeBron’s crap talk about Phill (although Phill Jackson was a horrible GM/Pres and deserves the criticism), because it wasn’t about Jackson but rather about a 19yo rookie who probably looked up to you when growing up. A total d!ck move. As I mentioned to EG, imagine if it had been Durant talking crap about the Cavs drafting Cedi. Glad the Cavs won but not really enthralled with the way… Read more »
I agree. Lebron taking cheap shots isn’t a good look. Ntilikina looks good too.
I’m starting to agree with Nate that I will end up liking IT4 despite his defense.
He’ll at least bring some playmaking and excitement…I’m in favor of playing more Frye, too…it’ll hurt the defense, but the D is already last with a bullet, so who GAF?
But it is the good kind of bad D. Some times the D is bad due to lack of effort (Kyrie, Cavs) or because of missed assignments (Shump, JR) or because of dumb schemes (Lue).
IT gives effort & is pretty smart. He is just so small he can’t do much.
*IT3
Last season I thought effort was the problem. This year it feels different. It’s still early this year, but I agree with the author that the pieces aren’t fitting. Maybe the veterans won’t get going until after Christmas. Maybe they won’t get going at all. I have zero faith that IT can return from his prolonged recovery and meaningfully contribute to a playoff run this season. Cavs need a point guard.
Yes exactly. As much as everyone loves (more national media folks) to point to LeBron as the greatest (hyperbole) PG since Magic Johnson, he turns the ball over a ton.
I almost checked out when they were down 23, too. Porzingis is a heck of a player, but he is getting a rep for flopping….not just this game, he flopped like a dying carp against the Hornets earlier this week. Even Knicks fans are complaining about it. I don’t think the Pels are going to trade Boogie unless it’s clear it isn’t going to work. So far, Boogie and Davis have been good when on the court together. I’m on the record for a long time as a ‘no Boogie’ guy. I don’t think Monroe would help much, either….he’s just… Read more »
If the Cavs are trading the pick for a big go for Lauri Markkanen of the Bulls. Kid’s got talent. Monroe is average at best.
I’d be good with that, but I doubt the Bulls would…if you get a rookie who looks like he can actually play, you keep him…
True. Mayne sweeten the deal and send Shump, Calderon and Green too.
No way they could resist that…it may be too sweet, actually…
what if Porzingis had a better mentor than Melo. If I were knicks, I will try to get a vet to positively influence Porz as highest priority.
Yes this game should not have been this hard and required a near historic comeback, but the Cavs effort early this season has been marginal to pathetic at best and they have used their skill and athleticism to get by. When they want to turn it on, they do, and thats what happened last night. The Knicks played extremely hard last night and were pumped in the process of a butt whooping, rightfully so. But I just had a weird feeling this game would be close, not that Cavs would win, but the gap would be closed rather quickly. I… Read more »

It is NOT Monroe… Nice recap Josh. I think DELLY should come back, so I can go back to DellaveYoda. If only Mil would take Shump
Dude, when doing the recap how about actually spelling a guys name on the team correct? It’s Isaiah, not Iasiah. I don’t know, took me two seconds to google it, maybe in the future you should too…
Dude, it was probably just a typo. I think everyone knows who it was. This isn’t War & Peace
Wow though crowd.
Are you the guy who didn’t want to be in LeBrons video on the subway? “Can you not (make typos)?”
Congrats on your 2 second contribution. It’s really on an equal plane as the hour+ of work Josh invested in writing the article.
Gotta agree with RDE. Writing a decent article is HARD work, and even when you work really hard, misspellings and worse creep in. For one thing, when you review your own work, you tend to see what you meant to write, not what you actually wrote. Spoken as a guy who spelled “speed” as “sped” in the introduction to his Ph.D. thesis.
You’re comments are unnecessary. Why don’t you spend time at another blog. (Lifts up biceps and flexes like Albert Belle).
