Live Thread: Cavs @ Hawks
2018-02-09I can love the Cavs once again. They won’t hurt me anymore. Koby Altman and Dan Gilbert sent away the trouble makers and guys who refused to try from the Wine & Gold , and even though they didn’t necessarily get a magic carpet in return that’s gonna take them wherever they want to go, it truly is a whole new world for the Cavs and their fans.
The Cavs reset the frustration meter for themselves and everyone watching them. If there’s a lack of chemistry, it’s excusable. If they don’t run an offense, it’s excusable. I mean, after all, the team hasn’t played a single game together yet, and will play less than 30 games together before the playoffs start.
Unfortunately, none of the new acquisitions, George Hill, Larry Nance Jr., Jordan Clarkson, and Rodney Hood, will play tonight. The mostly washed up corpses of Isaiah Thomas, Dwyane Wade, Derrick Rose, Iman Shumpert, Jae Crowder, and Channing Frye aren’t here though either. That leaves the Cavs pretty thin.
They had to call up their D-Leaguers, John Holland and London Perantes. Jose Calderon, Cedi Osman, LeBron James, Tristan Thompson, and J.R. Smith will start tonight.
The Hawks are coming off a game last night against Orlando. They lost. The Cavs should be pretty pumped, so the effort will be enough to propel them over the league bottom Hawks. And, if it isn’t, help is on it’s way. I’m picking Cleveland 121-101.

The issue was 2k had IT rated as a 91 player instead of a 19 player…
Lol. I think this is just an excuse to play video games. Savannah James: “Lebron stop playing that damn game and help me clean up the kitchen!” Lebron: “Sorry Savannah, I have to play 2k for work. I don’t actually like playing this game, but I have to as part of my job. Sorry can’t help you right now, gotta finish this game. The rest of our season may depend on it. Also I really need to play all tomorrow because, you know, I really have to see how Larry Nance’s virtual avatar runs the pick and roll with the… Read more »
This is reminiscent of a recent conversation I had with my wife. Game was Assassin’s Creed.
Omg. I read your and Simmo’s comments aloud to my wife. We were cracking up.
Can’t remember what was said about Brandon Wright. Anyways, he’s going to the Rockets.
I apologize if this was already noted!

As a lifelong Hawks fan, I remember Rory Sparrow well. Tree & Sparrow. Belinelli got bought out as well. I would take Tony Allen over him. I think the Cavs will wait a couple days to assess some of the new guys first. Bulls nip the TWolves in Thibs/Jimmy/Gibson vs Lavine game. Wins: 17 = Hawks, Mavs, Kings 18 = Suns, Magic, Grizz 19 = Nets, Bulls Tomorrow: Pelicans (b2b) at Nets Bucks (b2b) at Magic Wiz at Bulls (b2b) Lakers at Mavs Nuggets (b2b) at Suns Hopefully Davis goes nuts for the Pels. Some winnable games for the bottom… Read more »
We simply have more guys who either can be positives on both ends (Bron, Cedi, Green, Hill) or are at least neutral on one end and a big positive on the other (Love, Korver, Nance).
Hopefully Hood, a refocused JR, and a healthy TT can at least rise to the 2nd category.
I fully admit I was wrong on IT & Crowder working. Thought Jae would fit well & IT could work his way back. I did get Cedi right. Is anyone wishing for Jamal Crawford instead? My hope is that without an obvious second iso option, we will go to more motion & movement. More stuff through Love at the elbow. I hope we will hang our hat on that rather than iso ball. It is the only way this team can win it all. Think 2014 Spurs or 2004 Pistons. Our 2nd best iso guy may be Clarkson. Or Green.… Read more »
I thought Crowder would had worked out. And thought IT would work in the regular season. In a way I’m glad IT flopped so badly, so it forced the Cavs to make a trade. Still I hated the trade, and still do, because they were sending Kyrie to an east rival. But if the Brooklyn pick turns into a transcendent talent then it’s a win.
That was my thought… the only problem is, this team works from LeBron out, which means when his iso doesn’t work, he expects another player to win his iso…. could Lue coach this into the team’s fabric over the next few months?
I also agree-Love has got to become a focal point offensively. There is no other way this team can roll to the Finals…
LeBron works best with shooters around. To your point about “iso” LeBron, that is why Kyrie was so valuable. He’s probably the best “iso” player in the league, and why we won a championship. But whatever, I don’t want to re-examine what happened last summer any longer. I just hope the Cavs find a “difference maker” with that Nets pick.
Your answer suggests what I fear–we don’t have a second creator on this roster. Does that mean this team won’t win a championship? Not sure… does it mean we can’t beat the Celts…hell no! I would love to see Lue install an offense that puts pressure on all five positions and keeps the ball moving. One can dream…
I disagree regarding the Celtics. I felt that all the Cavs needed to do was to ship out IT, and they would take the east crown, and still feel that way. Now that they landed Hill, Hood, Nance, and Clarkson too, I’m even more certain. Who beats LeBron in a 7 game series in the east?
Golden State is a different story, but I’m not sure there are any moves out there that would matter against GS.
I think anything top 6 has a good chance to get one. Sexton at 7 is close. A little bit of everything to choose from: 1) C with all the offensive tools who can shoot but needs some defensive intensity. 2) C with unicorn wingspan & quickness. Offense needs polish but decent FT shooter. 3) 6’7″ PG/SF who is the best player in Europe at 18/19 and excelled vs NBA players & won gold at the Euros with off the charts IQ but lacking elite athleticism. 4) An offensive wizard PG who is leading the NCAA in points & dimes… Read more »
Really wish the Cavs could have a Tyreke or Lou Williams type player (and a big who can rim defend or shoot)…they will need someone to fill that secondary creator role…
Next year the mid-level exception could fetch a player if we don’t land one with the Nets pick (Young, Porter, Sexton).
Clippers and Cavs were close on a Jordan trade:
http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/22384540/los-angeles-clippers-cleveland-cavaliers-were-close-deandre-jordan-trade
I”m happy with what they scored. I like DJ but he wasn’t a difference maker against the Dubs IMO
Glad they didn’t, and I like Jordan. They needed a team overhaul, getting Jordan would have mostly emptied their shot…
Season highs in points: Bron 57, Love 38, Korver 30, Green 27, JR 23, TT 17, Calderon 17, Cedi 16,
Korver & Cedi’s were tonight. TTs vs Minny. 3 of our 8 rotational guys left have had their season highs since trade news leaked. Hmmmm…….
As we are feeling the possibility of all that can be, I have one small concern with this team going forward–and it’s not the need for a backup big… who is the second offensive option in crunch time? Who will create his own shot when it counts? Please do not fire internet bullets, but I felt that the former roster had potential late-game (albeit late in career) heroes like Rose or Wade; similarly, I imagined IT would round into shape and be the Kyrie of this year’s Cavs. I fear this team looks most like the 2015 team that lost… Read more »
You are thinking too hard. Have a beer!
I am at the end of my third–Southern Tier’s Cinnamon Roll–but I don’t want this edition of the Cavs to end with another runner-up trophy. When LeBron is on a team, the team’s goal has to be a championship–the Finals are now a given. I may be one of the minority who thinks the Cavs were going to win the 2015 title before Love and Irving’s injuries, and one who believes they would have beaten the Dubs last year had they not gotten Durant…
Have you been to the Southern Tier Brewery in Chautauqua, NY?

Forgiven–he was never going to be a Cav, but I like they gave it a shot. He actually saved a few games for them this year…
It was cool to see. Would have been cool if it worked out. Don’t really care much about it..
Great night guys! Feeling very rejuvenated and excited about this team!
Will leave you with one last one…

What a breath of fresh air: Cedi over Crowder. Jae played with little joy, and Osman is off the charts

Thank god the Cavs kept Cedi…
Thank god they played him!

Great game.
The Cedi interview is instant AWESOME
Surprised Cedi could play that many solid minutes given his time on the pine.
You have to love Cedi. He loves the game and hes’ having a blast.
Cedi had more rebounds tonight then Crowder had in three games starting for Love…
