Recap: Clippers 132, Cavaliers 108 (Or, Caught in the Wake)
2019-03-31The last time Cleveland faced off against the Clippers, the game was tightly contested from start to finish. Unfortunately, this match-up didn’t quite go as one would hope. The Cavaliers got caught up in the Clippers wake as they sailed to an easy win and continued their recent streak of hot play in their journey towards a higher playoff seed. There is a lot at stake in the Western Conference seeding race and its clear that LA wants to give themselves the best chance possible heading into April. And without Kevin Love, that meant a bit of a beating for The Land. I’ll try to keep it short and sweet. Let’s get started.
The first quarter featured a lot of back and forth action from both teams. Starting with a crafty layup by Cedi Osman (19 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals, 3 assists) the scoring was quickly answered by LA’s own rookie point guard, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander who acquitted himself quite well in this one. The next bucket by the Clips showed why LA made a mistake in trading Zubac for next to nothing as the big man cruised down the court for a transition dunk, leaving several Cavaliers caught in the same wake that ended up losing them the game. A few minutes later, Sexton showed off his new-found but short-lived three point range adding his first and only triple of the game to tie it early in the quarter. Collin would finish the night with 21 points on 7-17 shooting and only 1-5 from distance. Sexton’s shooting was definitely not where it’s been recently.
Unfortunately, Gilgeous-Alexander picked up where Sexton had fallen off, making 3-3 from behind the arc for the game as he quickly answered Sexton’s long-range make with one of his own. Sexton did go 6-6 from the free throw line and four of those came in the opening frame to help keep the first quarter close. The Cavaliers kept pace with the Clippers through one, ending the quarter 29-29. One of the better moments from the quarter was this nifty bit of passing from Cedi.

The second quarter is where Cleveland saw LA let out their sails and reach flank speed. The Clippers bombed away for 4-7 from behind the arc while the Cavs couldn’t get even one of their five shots from outside to fall. They must have been busy spitting out seawater as the Clips sped through the quarter. Jordan Clarkson started out the scoring for the Cavs in the second as he put in a quick 6 points before taking to the bench for the remainder of the half. He would finish the night with 26 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists. Unfortunately, the Cavs didn’t have an answer inside for Montrezl Harrell who beat the Cavs up for 23 points. The big man even added to the damage from outside, canning a triple of his own. The score going into half-time was much less favorable as Cleveland saw a 13 point deficit with a score of 65-52. Luckily Larry Nance Jr. (5 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal) showed his ability to finish around the rim with this sweet double clutch in the last couple minutes of the quarter.

Though the Cavs still couldn’t get anything going from outside, they shot 3-23 from distance for the game, they did manage to outscore the Clips in the third. The damage came primarily at the rim with sweet drives like this one.

In addition to their points inside, the remainder of the damage came at the free throw line as they showed true competency, going 10-11 from the charity stripe. Conversely, LA shot a total of zero free throws, something I’m sure caused some grievances on the home team sideline. The quarter ended with the score slightly closer at 93-83.
Unfortunately, the fourth quarter saw a return to dominance for the Clips as they managed to drop 39 to Cleveland’s 25. Bench scoring phenom Lou Williams, put the Cavs away early in the fourth, planting them squarely in their wake as he put up 14 points in the first eight minutes of the quarter. The scoring outburst, which is all too common for Williams, was combined with a couple of assists to Harrell, and put the game away for LA with a 121-98 lead before he exited the game for garbage time. The game ended with a final score of 132-108.
Some Notes:
1) Given how prolific Sexton has been from outside, one thing that’s been a bit overlooked about his progress is how he’s improved his finishing ability around the rim. Earlier in the season, this was a major struggle for the rookie. Fortunately, he’s showing improvement inside as well as outside. Check out this tough finish from late in the third.
Collin Sexton (19 PTS) with the tough finish!

2) Kevin Love’s absence was certainly felt in this one. He was held out with a sore shoulder in what I’m sure was an ultra-conservative decision given their 19 wins. His impact on the boards is unmatched on this Cavs team. They lost the rebounding battle 44-36. No surprise given that he’s one of the best defensive rebounders in the League.
3) I didn’t mention Marquesse Chriss in my recap at all. Why? Because he had a pretty lackluster line of 3 points, 4 rebounds, a turnover, and 3 fouls. He shot 1-4 from the field, 0-2 from three, and 1-1 from the line. And yet, he led the team in +/- with a +7 for the game. Advanced stats, am I right?
4) Here’s another update from the West Coast. The Rockets are continuing their hot streak. Which isn’t great news for the Cavaliers other first rounder this year. Hopefully they don’t win too many of their remaining games. Also, LeBron has been shut down for the remainder of the season. In LA. After not having made the playoffs. Can you imagine the click-bait that would have been written if that happened in Cleveland? It’s nauseating. Hope James enjoys his long summer of filming movies, because he’s playing a heck of a lot less basketball this year.
I was hoping this game would be a bit closer than it was. Especially given that this was the one and only live Cavs game that EvilGenius got to attend. Unfortunately, he saw a bit of a downer out there in this one. At least we know that with every loss comes one more ping pong ball. As always, Go Cavs.
RESULTS FROM BULLS / KNICKS GAME SHOULD BE DECIDED BY THE TIME CAVS / SUNS GAME STARTS——-MIGHT INFLUENCE ON POSSIBALITY OF ALOT OF “TOE CRAMPING ” BY LOVE/ LNJ / T.T. ETC.—–“STARQUEESE/ SAUCE ” STARTERS ——NEED FULL”TANK-ZION-THON ” GAME PLAN INTACT : )
We should win vs the injury riddled Suns tonight.
Hope the Bulls win in NY.
What an incredible slew of games after all the dogs last weekend. Zion looked otherwordly tonight, almost carried them to another win. Love Winston for MSU, his dribbling style reminds me of Rondo a little. If the Cavs get the first pick, I’m ready to move on from the dual gifts to Ainge of Kyrie and taking IT off his hands.
BONZI WITH 15 PTS / 16 BDS IN START FOR THE BUCKS———–WHY DID WE LET HIM GO——HEY WE GOT “STARQUEESE ” : (
Because our FO is pretty consistently stupid.
What a quad of games! Duke/Va Tech. Auburn/Kentucky. Virginia/Purdue. MSU/Duke.
I might take Cassius W. with the Houston pick if we do not land Zion. The kid from Purdue has to be way up as well.
YEAH SUCKS FOR THE KID FROM AUBURN–OKEKE—-HIS DRAFT STOCK PROBABLY WENT DOWN—MIGHT FALL INTO THE CAVS / HOUSTON PICK ——AN SURE REDDISH WILLSTILL GO IN TOP TEN/ DRAFT—-JUST HARD TO GET A READ ON HIS POTENTIAL
well that sucked, at least they can’t get injured in games before the draft.
MAYBE I AM WRONG –( AND IT COULD HAVE BLOWN UP ON MSU )—-ON THAT LAST INBOUNDS / AFTER BARRET CAUGHT / STARTED TO PENETRATE TO BASKET (5 SEC’S LEFT )–I WOULD HAVE USED THEIR LAST FOUL (WITHOUT A PENALTY )—–FORCED DUKE TO INBOUND AGAIN / TOP SIDELINE WITH LESS TIME ON THE CLOCK——-ANY OPINIONS ?
One point game I probably wouldn’t have risked it. Two point would be risky too. If Barrett anticipates and does somehow get a shot up you could risk tying. Then again with RJ/Duke FT track record, maybe not a bad risk.
SOME GREAT GAMES THIS WEEKEND —WHAT MAKES MARCH MADNESS SO SPECIAL—-MAKING IT EVEN MORE SPECIAL IS “SHARING IT WITH MY CTB BROTHERS “—-THANKS SO MUCH GUYS !!!!
What a game by MSU! Breakdown on the inbound by Duke. Also Duke didn’t have very good possessions the last two times they had a chance to tie.
Free throws, turnovers, and some d breakdowns killed Duke. Not surprising considering how they just escaped the last two games.
WOW —SMART PLAY BY WINSTON NOT SHOOTING LAYUP ——NEXT STOP NY ZION —–STAY TUNED !!!!
IF I AM MSU I TAKE THE FOUL—RUN COUPLE SECONDS OFF THE CLOCK–JUST MAKE SURE HE ISN’T SHOOOTING
THIS IS THE GAME RIGHT HERE FOR MSU—–CBS HAS TO BE ECSTATIC ON TODAY’S GAMES
Zion assist, Zion score…. big swing… gotta go, too nervous LMAO
Huge shot by Barrett.
POOR HELP SIDE DEFENSE BY MSU—-MCUAID SHOULD HAVE BEEN UP/ HIGHER ON BARRETT
Man Zion is such an incredible finisher through contact
Turnovers killing Duke.
Good God. Zion just blocked another jumpshot from an impossible distance.
Like there is no way he should be able to get to some of the jump shots he does on the perimeter. The opposing players don’t expect it, for good reason.
SO TRUE JOHNB —-FASTER PACE/ MORE ATHLETIC COMPETTION / DAILY–GAME BASIS / LONGER SEASON AND YES HIS WT CONTROL
Announcers call out Duke Zion winded/settling for a contested three. Couldn’t agree more. Fatigue along with the durability concerns are the only questions I have about him at the next level.
WOW WHAT A SHOT !!!!!!!
MSU gritty. Definitely a 50/50 game.
Just had a slow replay of a Zion board that was like a bball movie. MSU guy jumps, peaks, Zion just keeps rising.
MAN THIS IS A HELLUVA GAME—HOPE IT STAYS CLOSE THE ENTIRE GAME
AGREE WITH YOU JOHNB ON ZIONS (FOUL SHOOTING ) STROKE—NEEDS MORE UP AND OUT / FREEZE THAT FOLLOW THRU
OK I ” RECANT ” MY EARLIER POST ABOUT ZION —-WOW !!!
At this point in his season/development this year, his baseline seems to be shooting about 55 percent no matter the competition.
Damn Zion with another Trey. Set shot sort of working.
Albeit a catch and shoot. Needs to work on free throw consistency on release. Short arms sometimes.
Barrett is great at putting his body into guys and drawing fouls or finishing. Doesn’t have a great first step, but is crafty and strong thru contact.
STILL A GREAT PLAYER / # 1 DRAFT PICK BUT YOU CAN SEE AGAINST REAL GOOD COMPETTITION / PLAYERS HIS SIZE- (WHICH HE WILL SEE EVERY NBA GAME )–THERE IS SOME ” CHINK INTHE ZION ARMOR “
He sort has taken over in the first few minutes of the second half. They probably need to keep putting him in the block where he has punished MSU. Not as easy to double and recover from posting him. Longer run to shooters. Doubling him on the drive or perimeter seems to deter him. Not consistent as a skip passer yet. He also has fallen in love a bit with the three. Made one but probably needs to go to bread and butter.
RJ impressive so far against MSU.
Add Reddish to that. Zion being double teamed. Smart. Won’t matter if RJ and Reddish continue playing like the have.
Zion has been not great. Defended well by MSU. Some ill advised passes and turnovers. Pretty lax on running back in transition.
Got another great game today. Impressed with Auburn’s moxie.
GREAT NEWS SIMMO !!!!!—–AND AS A FATHER OF 5 BOYS ——-YES THE “REAL ‘ FUN HAS JUST BEGUN —–CHERISH EVERY MOMENT YOU CAN WITH HIM !!!!!
Thanks JMay, missed this game completely & yr recap will suffice, don’t think I will be chasing a replay.
In other news, my son (born 7 weeks prem) was just released from hospital. Stoked to have him home. Now the real sleep deprivation begins. Won’t be long before he fits into his sister’s old Indians onsies, but we think he may need his own style… Cavs team shop may receive some business.
Thanks for the update Simmo!!! Enjoy the time with your growing family!
Great news Simmo!
Great news.
Wish him and the family all the best.
Congrats
Awesome!
APRIL FOOLS TANKATON GAMES TOMORROW——BULLS / KNICKS ———-CAVS / SUNS ———WHO WILL BE THE FOOLS——WHO WILL BE THE WINNERS ——-I AM SAYING THE KNICKS WILL BEAT THE BULLS MEANING CAVS NEED TO GO INTO FULL TANK MODE VS THE SUNS —–CAN YOU SAY LOVE / T.T. / LNJ SITTING OUT WITH ” TOE CRAMPS ” —————“STARQUEEESE ” DESERVES A START WITH HIS + ANALYTICS FROM SAT’S GAME CORRECT ?
Amen coach, best game plan I’ve heard. And when Longo speaks, everyone should listen!
NICE RECAP——-YEP HAVE ALWAYS QUESTIONED THE ACCURACY OF ADVANCED STATS —-DIDN’T PUT ALOT OF CREDENCE INTO THEM—TOO MANY VARIABLES THAT INFLUENCE THEM/ JUST MY OPINION ———–YES THE “DAMNED ” ROCKETS KEEP WINNING / MOVED PAST THE BLAZERS—DROPPED US ANOTHER SPOT——-EARLIER IN THE SEASON THEY WERE IN THE 9TH SPOT / DRAFTING —-WOULD LOVE THAT !!!——–JUST KEEP INTACT THE “COMPETITIVE TANKATHON ” ——-HOPING THE CAVS MIGHT FIND A “SLEEPER ” LIKE THE KNICKS DID LATE IN THE DRAFT WITH RIBINSON ———THINK GIFFORD / ARKANSAS COULD BE THAT ‘SLEEPER ” THIS YEAR IF HE IS STILL THERE WITH THE “ROCKETS ‘ PICK
Remaining SOS:
Cavs: 16th
Suns: 25th
Bulls: 30th
Rockets: 29th
Blazers: 10th
76ers: 28th
Great cap JMay… and it was fun just to see em live anyway…
