Live Thread: Cavs vs. Hornets (#TuesdayisFryeday)
2019-04-09It only seems right that the final game of the 2018-19 Cavaliers season should fall on a Tuesday… though in this case, Friday might be more appropriate. It’s a bittersweet ending, not only for a year that doesn’t end with a post-season for the Cavs, but also as the team says goodbye to the retiring NBA Champion Channing Frye.
This year, the wine & gold had to deal with life after their best player on the court… but, next year they’ll have to deal with life without their best player off of it. That’s how irreplaceable Channing is as a locker room presence. From Lil’ Kev to french toast, Frye could always be counted on for finding a light-hearted way to keep his teammates loose in the face of either tension or adversity. Not to mention his ability to act as an extra coach on the bench for young guys… like the one who brought him breakfast this morning.
The game today is secondary. It behooves the Cavs to lose it, since they’d at worst finish in a tie with the Phoenix Suns for the second best odds at winning next month’s NBA Draft Lottery if they do. The outcome means more to the visiting Hornets, who are still alive for the final playoff spot in the East. Instead, today should be more of a celebration… of the fans who endured a difficult season to watch… of the young guns who will lead the Cavs into the future… of the vets who hung in there through injury… and of the man who’s smile and good humor were always infectious.
It’s also a time to say goodbye, not just to Frye, but also to some other potential faces who may be other places next year like Marquese Chriss, Nik Stauskas, David Nwaba… and the ghost of J.R. Smith. This may also be the final game with Larry Drew leading the team. LD deserves a ton of credit for how he handled the team in this difficult transitional year… and, he probably also deserves a shot at the job going forward. It remains to be seen if he gets that opportunity. And, finally, this will be the last game played in the arena known as “The Q” because it will hereafter be called the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse.
Prediction: Expect the Hornets to come out ready to put the Cavs away so they can rest up for their last playoff push against the Orlando Magic tomorrow, and expect the Cavs to play heavy doses of Channing and the bench. In keeping with my ridiculous Tuesday lopsided predictions… I’ll say the Hornets sting the Cavs 137-99… but the Cavs still have fun with a Frye-day send off.
Catch all of the season ending action starting at 7pm EST on FSO… and, as always chime in below.
Magic quit because he didn’t want to fire anyone. Crazy.
That can’t be the real reason. Bailing before his Lakers legend gets truly tarnished?
If you read the quotes it sure sounds like it.
Gotta say, the magic thing is maybe the shocker of the season for me. Last thing I expected. They got two and a half months basically. Then LBJ might really end up screwed for the rest of his career, by his own doing of course, but still wowser….
I thought the Lakers were on the right track…fast lane for signing Melo and Boogie and Jason Kidd…now I just don’t know…
I mean there was a plan. Cap space, LA Glitz and Glam, Mega Free agents. One of the few markets that that plan is viable. Better chance than landing Zion in the draft in all likelihood, which sucks. But that is the nature of the league.
WOW! Russ to PG13 for the comeback!!!
Never mind, back to 10.
Suns within 5 with 4 minutes left.
Dirk with 26 (could be his last game). Crawford with 42.
Well, I would say our priorities are:
1) Coach search
2) Draft scouting & prep
3) JR trade/decision
4) FA decisions (Nwaba, Sauce, Chriss)
5) Other possible vet trades (TT, Delly, JC, Henson).
I would hold all 4 of the guys in #5, so I put it last.
If Drew wants to keep Longo, he can walk as HC.
Knight is also possibly a trade. But doubt he has much value. Only if we take back long term $$, which I doubt we do.
SO WHAT DO WE POST ABOUT NOW——-PLAYOFFS / DRAFT / FREE AGENTS / CAVS COACH / CAVS YOUNG TALENTS / INDIANS/ BROWNS / BUCKEYES / BEER….BEER …..BEER …..BEER !!!!–
TV says last 17 for YB:
23.1 ppg, 51% FG, 44% 3s, 3.4 dimes.
If the playmaking & defense level up, we have a player.
The defense almost certainly will…. bigger question is if the playmaking does. It would help to get some better shooters around him. Cedi wasn’t bad, Knight was bad, but he’s been better throughout his career. I’m not sure either really cut it though as starters.
Hunter would fit nicely there as a legit 3 and D… then move Cedi to the bench and maybe allow him to create more as a primary initiator.
Yep. Keep up all the great work, guys. Best blog around.
Coin flip. Draft. JR trade. Decisions on Nwaba (keep), Suace, & Chriss.
Maybe LeBron asks Channing to run the Lakers, ha! Couldn’t be any worse!
Seriously though, how long until Channing gets a job offer from someone? Minutes, hours, or days?
Missed the game but I’m mostly bummed about missing the EG memes – going to go back through it all now.
Thanks EG for the perfect intro to the game above, well said.
Thanks all CtBers for making this place the awesome place it is – we’ve found out who the real fans are this year.
Bring on the draft and next season.
Simmo
That’s about as much fun as you can have at the end of a blowout loss… lol
Thanks for the fun season of game threads guys!
Jeanie is probably going to hire Kobe. That is the logical, terrible move right now.
Jeannie Buss rn…

Lol
EVIL BRINGING HIS “A” GAME OUT —-LOVE IT !!!
Laker version of a dumpster fire…
THE EXPRESSION ON CEDI’S FACE IS “PRICELESS “
THIS COULD HAVE MORE NEGATIVE IMPACT ON PLAYERS WANTING TO GO TO LAKER LAND ——-FRANCHISE IS QUITE DYSFUNCTIONAL
Lol…

NO GOODBYE’S——————JUST ” SEE YOU AROUND “—————-THANK YOU SO MUCH CHANNING FOR BEING CHANNNING !!!
That was an awesome end. Channing is the best. Really and truly. He might have the best attitude in the entire league.

WHAT??? Holy sheeeeeeeeeeeit. Does that mean LeBron is now the president?
Yeesh. Ha. Talk about utter incompetence.
Farewell to Channing. Love that guy.
Good to see some Deep Frye’s one last time.
SO COOL TO SEE FRYE GET DOUBLE DIGITS / WELL DESERVED ——ALSO COOL TO SEE YB WITH 10 ASSISTS ALL HAPPPENING –AT THE “ROCK “
YB gets 10 Assists! First Pts Ast double double. Thats better than a win.
Goodbye Channing! We Love you!
Young Bull with 10 dimes!!
FRYE-DAY!!!!!!!
YEP IF LAKERS WERE SMART THEY ALREADY HAVE GRIFF ON A PLANE TO L.A.
Mvp chants for Channing.
So cool!
Let’s get Channing to double digits

If the Lakers are smart, they’ll fire Pelinka as well and go hire Griff…
Good call.
I agree, but you’d think there’s also other candidates out there.
Any that know exactly how to build a team around LeBron though?
Great question.
I mean, there is so much track record at this point, I think it is fairly obvious. Which is why their FA signing made no sense in a vacuum, save for cap space for this summer. Probably should have retained Lopez though.
Love that play by Sexton!!! In rhythm to Frye!!!
ONE MORE TIME!!!!
The bank is open for Channing! Followed by a triple!
CHANNING!!

Yezus
This is a good move. He ain’t Jerry West.
Well, though it is tough to recall exactly, but I think I had 6-7 goals for this season. 1) Develop the young core: Sexton, Cedi, LNJ. Done. 2) Get rid of Lue: Check. 3) Get rid of Longabarfi: Nope. 4) Develop some fringe guys into rotational level players (Nwaba, Zizic): Check. 5) Offload some vets for future picks/projects. Mostly check (Hill, Korver, Hood: JR summer). 6) See if Love can thrive as the #1: Unknown. 7) Have the remaining vets stay engaged & help with culture (TT, Frye, Love): check (save for JR). 8) Keep our 1st round pick: Check.… Read more »
Great pass Nance, Zizic gotta read that dive
What’s Sexton’s season high for dimes? He has 7 now…
7 I believe they said
If my math is right, YB can still miss 2 more 3s and stay above 40% for the season.
Whoa, Magic out as Laker president
WOW!
https://twitter.com/mcten/status/1115780677608173568
Holy WOW!
Great dime Sexton!
Great pass, cedi!
Sexton close to 20
Kaminsky gonna hurt someone out there… dude is so uncoordinated…
Tough bucket by Cedi…
Yezus. Lamb putting us to sleep.
Yep. But gotta hang in there to see Channing out.
Grizz beating Detroit soundly in their efforts to convey this year to Boston. No doubt thinking they will be even worse next year after Connoly is traded.
Longo for 3!
This is sadly trending in the direction of my ludicrous prediction…
So Frye is the only guy with a positive +/- right now..
That was an epic Frank the Tank fail…
Woof… that quarter was rough…
This one is rougher.
I’m not really sure why Sauce thinks he can break down anyone off the dribble…
Yup… Jumpers and drive and finish or kicks off swings should be it.
Too much hustle by Charlotte…
They are focused and locked in tonight
Getying really tired of Hornet’s 3s…
Getting really tired of Longo…
Getting? That’s just WAY too much patience.
Can we hire Ty Lue back as our defense coach? Would that be insulting to put him under LD?
I know it will never happen, but I feel like it actually would help next year.
Ty will be the new Lakers HC if they want to keep the peace…
So true…
Quiche is going to change his name to Moo goo gai pan this summer.
Since we won’t be in the finals this year, I’m rooting for a Toronto/Denver final. Would it be the first time that a finals game was only on NBATV?
Nutcase finish Clarkson!
Lol NICE finish
Yezus.. Rebound already
Clevinger in the arena looking like a roadie for pearl jam.
Nance TO cedi!
Chris with the hustle!
Chriss is going to be in China next year, right?
Charlotte up close on Sexton on three line. Length bothering him a bit. Not quite having the space to launch threes like he has.
