Live Thread: 2019 NBA Draft (#ShellGame)
2019-06-20Think you know what the Cavaliers will do tonight? How sure are you?
In what might be the most random and up in the air draft for Cleveland this side of the 2013 Gum Drop Bear disaster, there’s not a ton of consensus about who… or even where they’ll ultimately pick. As it stands, the wine & gold have the 5th and 26th selections in a draft that’s widely speculated to be one potential superstar, and only three high level talents deep. That doesn’t mean they can’t still get some quality building blocks and contributors, but there’s also a whole lot of disparate opinions about players seeded 4-20 this year.
The Cavs could stand pat and choose between best player available and best possible fit into new head coach John Beilein’s plans. Names at Five have included Jarrett Culver, De’Andre Hunter, Darius Garland and Cam Reddish, but the Cavs have also been known to go off the board and makeĀ reckless out-of-the-box choices… bringing names like Coby White, Kevin Porter Jr. and Bol Bol (gulp) into play.
They could also just as easily find an eager trade partner (e.g. Atlanta, Chicago, Miami) to swap with and possibly pick up an extra choice or two in the 8-17 range. The point is, just about anything is on the table for the Cavaliers in this draft… they just have to figure out under which shell the right answer lies…
Catch all the hot draft action starting at 7pm EST on ESPN, and as always… chime in below with your theories, takes and comments.
We’ll update as we can with any relevant trades that happen leading up to the draft.
I wish the kid well. Respect Manute for his charity work and activism in Sudan. But that suit on his frame really does make him look like a weird antagonist from a Tim Burton movie.
I mean, 3/4 of our guard rotation are poor decision makers. Yuck.
Hire Mark Price to teach PG play.
Well, let us hope Delly & coach B can turn Garland & Sexton into passable PGs & defenders.
Not optimistic on either. If we take Garland…it is Minnesota level PG dumb from a few years back.
Yeah, I mean I think they both have talent, but one of them will get traded for less value at some point…..
Still feel like they’d be drafting and trading Garland… but what do I know?
Hopefully this is just trying to put the guy they think is best trade bait out there.
For a former “super agent” Rob Pelinka is pretty dumb…
Good job Rob Lowe.

LMAOOOOOOOO
HE NORMALLY HAS A GOOD TRACK RECORD FOR HAVING ” THE SCOOP / INSIGHT “
Screw it. Forget trading back. Just take Culver or Clarke and pray they get consistent jump shots sometime in the next five years.
Does Stein know something?
I’m not mad at that.
JOHN B —YOU HAVE ME ROLLING : ) : ) : ) : ) !!!
REDDISH MAY SURPRISE ALOT OF PEOPLE ———LEAVING ALOT OF GM’S / FANS NOT DRAFTING HIM DISSAPPOINTED —JUST DON’T THINK HE IS WORTH THE GAMBLE @ # 5 —–AGREE WITH ARCH A ” LOW MOTOR ” IS CONCERNING
So is his poor finishing at the rim. In college. An athletic 6’8″ guy should be avle to score at the rim. He was inefficient at all 3 levels.
And handle. Yeah he needs another year or two. Honestly I think he could be a legit top three prospect with more time in college. Just too soon. That isn’t the guy that should be developing in the nba. Could ruin him.
JOHN B—–I “LOOK GOOD IN PRACTICE ” : )
Lol, “Practice, we talking about practice?!!”
SO WE ARE EITHER GOING TO “SING THE PRAISES ” FOR KOLBY TONIGHT OR SCREAM “TO GET HIM OUT OF TOWN ” ———–“MORE BEER PLEASE “—THEN I WILL CONVINCE YOU THAT REDDISH CAN BE GOOD
Someone convince me Cam Reddish can be good.
His shot is pure, he’s long and athletic, and I don’t think he like being at Duke last year playing with Barrett.
He looks great in practice…….
I have issues with guys who have motor issues.
He looks good at 1 on 0.
They also don’t technically have a team… unless it’s for Big 3…
Ha!
Griff got 3 #1s and a high second for #4 & a low second AND got them to eat Hill’s contract.
He should still be running the Cavs.
I mostly don’t want Garland because he repped by Rich Paul… not for talent reasons…
Yeah I get that.
Never considered that, but that is somewhat concerning….
Makes sense…. there’s the potential for them to force a trade.
I can understand that. I share some of it.
Wade shade…
Well, at least we had workouts with Culver & Garland.
Not a huge fan of either. But Culver can defend & playmake some. And Culver (oops, meant to say Garland) can probably shoot (though 75% FT does not scream elite shooter to me).
Or the hitch. But I would rather him than Garland. White is okay but maybe overlaps with sexton too much even though he fits better than Garland. I would feel a lot better about taking Clarke if we had another top 20 to use on a wing or potential guy.
y, reddish and bol bol.. and buy into the 2nd for tacko
Griff straight trolling the Cavs and Koby taking that Cavs pick.
I would take Culver, but they will take Reddish. And Bol Bol.
don’t forget, we buy a 2nd for tacko as well
Take Garland Force bulls to trade with you for Culver, and take another asset
They better not take Reddish. Honestly I will take Culver at this point I guess. Really the only trade down I wanted was to get the 8 and 10 or 8 and 17. Guess you gotta hope the heat are morons and trade for jr.
when you are sitting at the poker table, and are unable to identify the mark in the first few minutes, guess what? you are the mark
Trade back to the bulls?
Do they have another top 20? If not I would pass unless it is for something like a top three protected next year (good chance even then of not conveying).
Cavs will take someone weird and then it will turn out to be a trade. Or it wonāt.
Iām with Nate. I want to see B Clarke.
I don’t think people care that much about JR’s contract. Could be wrong, but is tax relief really worth it. Nobody left is creating much cap room right? I mean al, the teams that could use it this summer pretty much have it. I am frustrated the Hawks didn’t do 8 and 17 for us.
Thinking the same. Prob should have traded with Bucks for 30.
Disagree. A deal will get done there.
LMAOOO I guess they didn’t like Culver that much.
Which never made sense.
Lol!!!
do koby and beilein have a decent set of stones between the 2 of them? or are we dealing with pebbles?
What are you talking about?
looks like other teams are executing plans to improve.. i am question the wisdom of our leadership.. but, perhaps they are yet going to earn their paychecks
ATL was always going to deal with NO first.
Saric & #11 for #6 by the Suns hurts at bit.
We must really like Garland, Culver, or Reddish. Likely all 3.
So the Suns would take another SF/SG type with Booker at SG & Oubre & Bridges at SF already?
They just got off TJ Warren today.
Culver can handle some. Can’t have too many decent wings, especially those that can run p and r (and hopefully shoot at some point in the future).
I think they would’ve used Culver as a point guard.
NOMAD.. WTF is KOLBY doing now?
I would move down now, if anyone is interested.
But I do not think anyone buys us taking Garland.
I would gladly take Covington & #11 for #5 IF we can get #13 from Miami tor JR.
I was just getting excited to take Hunter.
Me too lmaooo
hawks grab #4.. hot off the android press
Damn… that sucks. Take Garland or trade down.
Iām surprised NO wanted to add so many picks in this yearās draft.
I doubt they’re done Trading
I could see them trying to move those picks plus Ball/Ingram for an established player.
Hell of a trade for New Orleans considering they also get off of the Solomon Hill contract
Iād pick Culver now.
Hope Koby is listening to offers for Garland at 5…
OK, Culver or Garland?
Well bummer.
Frak. There goes Hunter, most likely.
Just… why?
Stupidity.
Gross…
I don’t understand how the hell you could ever consider drafting Culver over Hunter. Are those people assuming Culver will get 3x better and Hunter won’t improve at all? Culver looked terrible his last 3 games of the NCAA tourney, and Hunter destroyed him in the final game. I’ll be pissed if they draft Culver.
Culver does things that Hunter does not do, and probably will never do. Culver initiated 201 pick and rolls last season, I think Hunter was like 21…
Frenchy Longarms…
For me, the only way I deal with ATL is for 8 & 10 AND if I think I can still get Hunter (or Culver) at #8.
Reddish is a bust.
Per Fedor, Atlanta is offering 10 and 17 for 5, and the Cavs arenāt taking that deal. They would at least want 8.
If I were the Cavs, I’d take 10 and 17.
I love how all the pundits claim every year how the draft is a weak draft.
Hell yeah, hearing Hunter?! I’m excited!!!! And Atlanta wanting Hunter makes complete sense, if they’re offering 8 and 10, I think you have to do it.
For sure. I highly doubt they would consider that. 8 and 17 seems more likely. If we could also get Miami for JR that would be a pretty big haul.
But maybe they do it for 8 and 10 if we include 26. That would leave them with 5, 17, and 26.
If Chicago wants to trade Lauri Markkanen and the 8th pick for the 5th pick and J.R. Smith, would you do it?
Oh god yes…they aren’t doing that…
Sorry, Chicago has the 7th pick.

Uh 1000% yes.
Take a drink every time you read or hear someone unironically using the word ‘upside’ today/ tonight. I’m already plastered.
Upside is just another word for “he sucks right now.”
ESPN has a projection that has Tako Fall as 250% more likely to make an all-star team than Morant (5% to 2%).
They should fire their analytics dept and start over.
Vecenie on #26: 26. Cleveland Cavaliers (from HOU) ā Ty Jerome 6-5 combo guard, junior, Virginia The Cavaliers are thought to be interested in moving up on draft day from No. 26 to try and take an upside swing on someone. As mentioned above, Kevin Porter Jr. has been connected there recently. If they stay at 26, though, or even only move up a few places, Iād bet on Jerome being the pick. Jeromeās history with Cavaliersā general manager Koby Altman goes back for a long time now, from when Altman was an assistant at Columbia in the early 2010s… Read more »
Here’s Vecenie: So Iāve gone with Hunter here. Heās thought to be the top guy on the Cavsā board of realistic choices between him, Jarrett Culver, Garland, and Cam Reddish. Teams around the league are trying to determine just how real the Cavsā interest in Garland is. Are they seriously considering taking him a year after having selected Collin Sexton? Or did they go out to Los Angeles to see him work out in order to feign interest for the purposes of trade? Or, and this happens more than youād think around the league around this time of year, did… Read more »
(continue) As a player, I think Hunter fits well with Cleveland or with other potential suitors. Heās the best two-way wing in the draft, playing extremely well on both ends of the floor for the national champion Virginia Cavaliers this past year, leading them to a title game victory. Heās an elite defender with legitimate switchable size and a 7-2 wingspan. Offensively, heās a straight line driver, but one who can knock down shots, attack closeouts, and keep the ball moving in an intelligent way on offense. Even at his current level now, as long as the shooting translates, Hunter… Read more »
I’m thinking the pick is going to be Hunter at 5, unless a trade is made and impacts this pick. I’d prefer Culver and his upside, but would be happy with taking Hunter. I hope they can secure another first with J.R.’s contract. I’m beginning to think that it’s not going to happen with Miami.
Terrifying.
Has to be perspective or shoes. He was maybe several (2?) inches shorter than Reddish. He would have had to grow like 5 inches based on that one photo.
WELCOME BACK EVIL —HOPE YOU ARE ENJOYING THE SUMMER : )— READY FOR THE “REAL DEAL” TO BEGIN ……….” MORE BEER PLEASE AND PASS THE PIPE BUCKAROO ” : )
NOMAD, just don’t bogart that fatty
If they draft Bol they better also draft Tacko.
I am all but mathematically certain it will be Reddish and Bol (if Bol is available). And then idiots on the internet will crow about the huge ‘upside’ of the Cavs draft.
Letās Go Baby!
If they take Bol Bol, I will have to embrace the evil of becoming a Lakers fan… ugh
Clippers?
True… maybe Clips
You’ll love Melo in purple and gold…
DWade also…
Clippers, please. For the love of God.
If that happens, we will truly have learned that this organization still isn’t good at drafting. Additionally, I will be pretty skeptical that this rebuild won’t end in a tear down and another brand new rebuild.
UPSIDE!! Feel the excitement!!
I was trying to get only the GIF
