Podcast 208: So Long-abardi…
2019-07-26 Off By EvilGeniusSo long… Farewell… Aufwiedersehn… Goodbye!
I leave and heave a sigh and say goodbye…
For well and for true, the Mike Longabardi Era is finally at an end in Cleveland as he joins Sashi Brown as part of the crack team of former Cleveland sports icons Ted Leonsis has wrangled together. So, of course, we had to jump in the podcast booth and talk about it.
Nate, Tom (for a while), Eli and EG gave the long and short of the defensive “wizard’s” time here, and also hit on Kevin Love pulling out of Team USA activities, the possible probable issues of free agency tampering in the NBA, and finished our marathon recap of the offseason moves of the Western Conference. There’s also plenty of irrational shade for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander from EG, possibly irrational love of Brandon Clarke from Nate, sharp So Cal criticism from Eli, and out of context outrage about rice cookers from Tom. So, your average two hour plus, insane content jammed Thursday night pod in the dead of summer…

It seems like the NBA landscape is all in a tizzy today over the NCAA’s new agent requirements. Thoughts?
I get both sides of the argument. The degree requirement IMO is definitely a class-based form of discrimination (and race-based given black people at a disadvantage because of institutional racism) given the cost of a college education in America.
OTOH, I can see how it prevents exploitation by individuals totally unqualified to do complex work. I’m not sure what the actual numbers are, but my impression of the agent game is that it helps if one is a lawyer and/or a CPA, both of which are professions that require post-baccalaureate work.
It’s realllllly hard to give the NCAA the benefit of the doubt. NBA should just be done with that slimy organization. Make the draft age 18 again, and pour more money into the G League. Of course I assume the NBA must also be in on this to some degree, and I’m sure most of the league’s equally slimy ownership is on board with sticking it to Paul, Lebron, and player empowerment in general.
Fair points, the wealthy will protect the wealthy, in this case, NCAA leadership and NBA owners.
Yes that is a much more accurate and succinct way to put it CLF!
It’s definitely a hard line to walk. The NCAA is garbage, but I get the idea of protecting these young kids. The problem is in determining if they actually care about them.
AGREE WITH YOU JASON/ INCREASED PLAYING TIME MIGHT “RELAX ‘ HIM MORE —-MIGHT HELP INCREASE THAT 3 PT % —–I LIKE THE PICK UP

Plot twist: Both!
El Paso, Dayton, Southaven, Gilroy. People shouldn’t have access to weapons of mass destruction just to protect people’s hobby, allay certain people’s paranoia, or because people need to overcompensate for sexual inadequacy. Sick of this BS.
At a certain point people’s out of control gun rights infringe upon everyone’s greater right to life and living in peace. We are light-years beyond that point.
Yep. And Texas having defacto open carry of automatic weapons is absolutely insane. It’s hard to comprehend how insane it is. Even most gun nuts think it’s insane. Essentially the El Paso a-hole didn’t commit a crime until he started spraying bullets. And he walked in with an AK-47 in both hands held at the ready. If you’re okay with that you should be okay living in a war zone. And you don’t get to call places like Mogadishu ‘s***h***s’. Because you may as well be living there. And I won’t get into the root cause of this crime, but… Read more »
Rhetoric encouraging hatred or downplaying such hatred and violence from political followers is the equivalent of shouting fire in a movie theatre. It’s eerily similar to how nationalistic fascism gained traction in the 1930s. Dangerous, irresponsible, downright criminal. Influence can be a deadly weapon when used to stoke the fires of ignorance.

Nice…. no risk, might find a nice bench guy. Always remembered what he did against Duke in the NCAAs, single-handedly beat them against Tatum, Kennard, Jackson, Giles, and Allen.
YOU ARE SO CORRECT JOHNB—WAS THINKING THE SAME —SEEMS LIKE GRIFF ” FOLDING UNDER POLITICAL–PROFESSIONAL PRESSURE “
Ugh. Griff gets nervous about LBJ’s reaction and walks back stuff he says. Gross. If it is true and you say it, stand behind it.
SO I GUESS DON’T BLAME GILBERT FOR GRIFFIN’S DEPARTURE —-EVEN THOUGH “LEBRON’S CAMP ‘ IS TRYING TO PUT THAT SPIN ON IT
My guess is Gilbert didn’t help at all and working for both Gilbert AND Lebron is very unpleasant.

Little surprised to see Griffin say this publicly. As said on the podcast, it would be great to see the Pelicans vs Lakers in first round of the playoffs. Griffin would be salivating at the chance to beat LeBron
I’m a little surprised, too. I would have thought that Griffin would take a page out of Mike Brown’s guidebook and continue to say nothing. That served Mike Brown pretty well. It’s much easier said than done to just keep quiet, but really what’s the point other than sour grapes? Perhaps he’s using this opportunity to advertise “we’re going to do it the right way in New Orleans.”
Franmil Reyes is a massive human being
Salazar fastball maxing out at 87-88 in his return start. He might be donezo.

HELL I THINK WITH THAT ” OVER THE WALL ” THROW –IT INCREASED HIS VALUE : ) ————–IF THE RIGHT OFFER –( HUGE IN THEIR FAVOR ) –COMES THEY WILL PULL THE TRIGGER —-STILL THINK TRIBE WILL GET AN OUTFIELD BAT / POWER
About to reach a point where the tribe’s divisional chances tank for the next 20 games. Murderer’s row of a schedule.
Sure enough they get two outfielders + two prospects. Sounds like Reyes is the type of young outfield power bat they’ve been looking for a long time. Puig will help for this playoff run but doubt he stays after. The team is walking this tight rope of trying to compete while retooling… gotta respect it. If you view it from the lens that Bauer was never going to stay here anyways, then might as well get what you can from him now. Pitching depth is still ridiculous with potentially Kluber, Carrasco, Clevinger, Bieber and Plesac. Lineup looks something like 1)… Read more »
As a Reds’ fan, sorry to see Puig go. He should love playing for a manager such as Francona.
I like the Reds being aggressive, just not sure if Bauer was the right guy.
Well not sure about pitching depth this year. Who knows what Kluber comes back as. Doubt Carrasco comes back at all any time soon. Hopefully he does someday, knock on wood.
Plesac’s Fielding independent numbers show an ERA that may not be sustainable. Clev and Bieber are pretty good. But we haven’t had a true number one ace this year and probably won’t.
I don’t really get this if they are serious about going anywhere in the playoffs this year. Reyes seems like a decent young player. Never thought Puig was worth much. Neither seems a like a playoff difference maker like having a good third starter would be. Think this trade is a future value trade primarily for Reyes.
Puig is a difference maker IMO. He’s a tone setter and a masher. He got screwed over by Bell for the first month or so of the season. But since mid-spring or so… been killing it as the number 5 hitter.
I’m only judging him by what he did in Cincinnati, I don’t know what he was like in LA.
And his value likely dropped after that tantrum:

J West hasn’t been a GM in years (Grizz 2007), but the teams he consults on win, make good moves, and draft extremely well. I think he has had a ton of influence with the Warriors and Clippers. He still knows talents and was the major proponent of SGA. The guy knows talent, both personnel and coaching staff, as well as team building with given resources. He has had his hands all over multiple dynasties over 30 years with different teams. Yes he is an all timer (maybe the all timer, considering his longevity of success) as far as front… Read more »
SGA will be a solid player on both ends for a long time. Sexton has yet to reach that potential. I think Sexton has potential. But he has an insanely long way to go. An insanely long ways in just knowing how to play on both ends.
SGA is overrated and will be in China by 2023…
Sexton has equal or better numbers across the board than SGA in their rookie seasons… and is the vastly better shooter and scorer. Just don’t see what’s so great about SGA. He does nothing particularly above average in any category…
SGA does things at an average level right now. Sexton, as far as his winning impact, does not. Sexton has a long ways before he contributes positively or even neutrally to the success of a team. That isn’t just based on his on off numbers. He looked way behind in running an offense, knowing how to play a team game, and doing anything right defensively. He has potential, but as someone said on the pod, he also could easily be smaller Jordan Clarkson.
Guessing that is why the Cavs hedged and took Garland. They likely aren’t sure on Sexton.
Player tampering is against the rules. NBA can’t and doesn’t want to enforce it, nor prove it.
What happened to Greg Anthony? Look up his wiki. Anthony and Legler were the best actual analyst team in the nba as far as insight. But Anthony got caught in an act that is illegal in 49/50 states. Pretty certain that is why he went to college analysis. He was married. Make your own moral judgements. On a side note, now that Anthony is gone, wish Legler, and the Barry Bros did more in game color analysis. Problem is there aren’t color analysts now. There are just reporters. At least guys like Hubie can breakdown a play in depth. Marc… Read more »
