Live Thread: Cavs vs Clippers
2020-02-09Cleveland with a real shot at this one, tonight: no Kawhi and no Patrick Beverly while the Cavs are coming off four days rest after Wednesday’s loss to the Thunder. The Clips are also on the back end of a road back-to-back after a 142-115 drubbing in Minnesota Saturday night.
Cleveland will be without Ante Zizic still and obviously Dylan Windler. Alfonzo McKinnie also returns to the team on a four year contract. It’s a pretty darned team friendly one. The Cavs control his rights for the next three years, and all of those years are just above the league minimum and non-guaranteed. It will be good to see The Fonz hitting the jukebox for the next few years will be a welcome site.
It’s also the debut of Andre Drummond in a Cavs uni tonight, and he looks to start from the get go. Kudos to Kevin Love and Tristan Thompson who have been nothing but class with how they’ve handled the trade deadline and the acqusition of Drummond. I, for one, am excited to see the new look Cavs tonight.

Since cavs news is pretty bleak right now here are some interesting tidbits on some non-cavs players that are fun to watch. Most people are keenly aware of Giannis’s major counting stats. 60.8% ts, 30 ppg, 13.5 reb pg, 5.8 apg, 1.1 spg and bpg. Great, but the most insane stat of his is one I hadn’t noticed until today, and likely the reason why he may finish with the greatest single season PER in history. Not if they didn’t want to resign him. Plus it seemed like it was either him or Sexton.
At the beginning of the season, I would have wanted to keep Sexton over Clarkson. Now, I wish they shipped out Sexton instead.
Clarkson has been doing normal Clarkson things, but he’s not the reason the Jazz have been winning since he got there. Pelton had the numbers on Windhorst’s pod a couple of weeks ago. Their net rating with him on the court was negative, it’s their starters playing better. (and playing a softer part of the schedule)
Exum is what he is, I think. Good defender, but I doubt he’ll ever be much on the other end.
But are their bench lineups less negative than before he got there?
I haven’t dug into those numbers. My feeling is that Clarkson *may* benefit the Jazz bench more than he did the Cavs bench, but not by much. His minutes and points are nearly exactly identical to his Cavs numbers. Like 23 mpg and 14 odd ppg.
He was likely gone anyway. But he was our best guard, by far.
Still, something is better than nothing.

I do wonder how much better bad teams would be if gms had the balls to just accept when their high picks are just too raw and just forgo throwing them to the fire. But most GMs are concerned with the image of slowly transitioning top 10 guys due to how it makes their draft decisions look to their fans and owners.
