Podcast 221: Deep Roni
2020-03-14Wow. What a few weeks it’s been for the Cavs, as they’ve gone 5-6 since the all star break and have played their best ball of the season… a season that likely will be cut short by a global pandemic. Yep. Talk of “the Roni,” as some of the kids are calling it, featured heavily in our first podcast in a month. Tom and Nate desperately needed to get into the podcast booth to talk about the surreal times we’re living in, and we hope you’re jonesing for some content to get you through the long hours of social distancing.
First off, Tom’s out of TP. Second, Nate’s trying not to horde, but compulsively shopping whenever he can (though not excessively). Don’t worry, though, your tapwater will be the same Monday as it was last week, and next week the shelves of your happy grocers will be stocked again. (Pro Tip: check out your local Asian grocery if you’re short on supplies. And yeah, we just mostly just had some “WTF is going on, and why has Nate been so OCD about all this?”
We did manage to squeeze some NBA talk into the pod early, as we went over the team’s solid play, the tragedy of Delly’s resurgence being cut short, Larry Nance, and the polarizing Collin Sexton. We went through the NBA and looked at who was hurt and helped most by the work stoppage (assuming a playoffs will be played), and waded into the morass of the Utah and Rudy Gobert situation.
Then we got to talking about all the distractions of the last few days and the effect social media has on our brains. Tom pitched the book Deep Work and Nate talked about meditation, and his struggles with anxiety and mental health in the last several months. It was a choose your own adventure at that point as we steered towards Jamele Hill, the madness of Twitter mobs, Dan Gilbert, and… trees.

APPLAUD YOU NATE —GREAT JOB —SETTING AN EXAMPLE FOR ALL OF US !!!!!!!!!!
Giving blood today. Everyone spaced 8 feet apart. Desperately trying not to touch my face. Second time I’ve been out of my neighborhood in the last two weeks. Strange times.
Did that Monday. Thankfully people appear to be getting the memo. Looked at the donation website and in my state everything had minimally a three day supply including platelets. Only two types were at a severe shortage at the time, B- and O-. Now O- is the only severe shortage locally. Learned or rather was reminded I am A-.
Also learned I have some elevated blood pressure for my age. Good to know. Who needs a doctor’s appt? Just donate blood. Has resulted in a new diet.
Hey hope everyone is doing well. I don’t have any great quarantine stories yet. But something that never would have happened before: Employee’s last day was Monday (going to a different company not losing his job). He needed to turn in his laptop but the office is closed. So he brought his laptop to my house to drop off. He left it in a paper bag on my doorstep, rang the bell, and drove off. I grabbed two clorox wipes, used them as gloves to grab the paper bag, slid the laptop out of the bag, wiped every square inch… Read more »

Any beer recs for this quarantine? Been using it as an opportunity to try as many local beers as possible. I live in Cincinnati so I’ve been trying some IPAs from Urban Artifact and Sonder (Mason, OH). Also came across a small batch IPA from Platform called Shine a Little Light that I enjoyed.
I’m currently stocked up with:
Hazy Little Thing IPA -Sierra Nevada Brewing Co
Dogfish Head 90 min (that’s an oldie but goodie)
Dragon’s Milk White -New Holland (bourbon barrel white-stout)
damn didn’t know you were in Cincy Vintage! my sister still lives right by Mason.
No way! I used to live in Kettering (suburb of Dayton) near Tom and then moved down to Cincinnati 2.5 years ago for work.
I will keep that in mind for the future!! Cavs fans few and far between in SWO LOL!

NOT A BAD IDEA BW
I’ve re-watched it a few times since it aired… still nerve wracking!
Weird suggestion, but wondering if anyone would be interested in a 2016 game 7 re-watch? We could pick a day/time and start a thread. I dunno; just had the idea today of re-watching myself and thought that might be fun. I purchased it on Amazon at the time, but i would think it’s archived on the League Pass they recently opened up to everyone. Just an idea.
Nate was watching it the other day on NBA TV
I just watched it on the YouTube tonight.

nah…. my girl’s a nurse in Seattle… pretty easy to understand the impending doom. Also, we’re not even close to the worst part of this yet… wait until May when there’s sick people lying in tents on state fairgrounds because there’s no room in any hospital.
Pretty much. Administration wasted a month and a half after shutting down inbound travel. Good decision, but wasted by downplaying and dicking around doing nothing. None of the states since then have gone far enough. With the utter and complete failure as far as the rollout of federal testing and subsequent delay in allowing non-fed and private testing, full nationwide lockdowns should have been instituted three weeks ago. Reacting is death. Anticipating the worst before the the worst has a chance to come to be is life. We have utterly failed since early January. We were and have continued to… Read more »
yup… the lack of testing, the lack of production of PPEs to healthcare providers, and the lack of quarantine orders for the sake of the economy and Trump’s re-election bid is mass murder.
Everyone stay healthy & safe. I want to be hopeful, but it is pretty tough. Not that I think we are all doomed or anything, but let’s just say I think this is gonna get worse before it gets better (June looking like best case return to psuedo normal). And I do not think adequate tests, PPE, or other resources are coming from the feds. Or rather, they are not coming fast enough.
Nope, Trump and Congress have pretty much taken every step to ensure maximum damage so far, as far as I can tell. Will be another stain in our history.
Lowe talks about Cavs lineup with Nance as 3.

BUCKAROO —YES I AM —-JOHNB —-WILL TRY TO GIVE BLOOD —WHAT IS YOUR OPINION OF AN OLD FART LIKE ME GIVING BLOOD —YES / NO ??
I am not a doctor. I know I am telling my parents to totally isolate. Dad is 73 in April. Mom is 66. Thankfully they have about a months worth of regular food and my dad has three years worth of freeze dried food. News to me until the other day. But it means they can ride it out if necessary. Personally, if you were my father I would maybe urge against it out of an abundance of caution. Leave it to younger people like me. However, the article did seem to indicate that blood donation was likely safer than… Read more »
have to agree with John B here… if you were my dad NOMAD, i would be against it. This not the time to risk it IMO, but if there’s real evidence of the curve being flattened, then maybe later in the summer would be a good time to go.
just make sure the recipient is ready to get “a good buzz on” NOMAD.. can u name the classic song from the early 70s ? also, NOMAD bro, i would think you would likely be immune from virus, given the large amount of rolling rock circulating in your plasma.. more beer please :)
Please consider donating blood. The nation’s hospitals are about to be down to their last reserves. The blood centers are taking extra precautions against exposure to coronavirus both for their staff and donors. Obviously if you’ve had or are recovering from coronavirus, been exposed to it or someone who has tested positive you will probably have to delay a donation. But for healthy individuals donating is safer than going elsewhere. Donating blood is an exception to shelter in place due to the critical need. This is about to be/is already a dire crisis that has the potential to cost many… Read more »

There are patients who need blood and cannot wait.” On top of the thousands of blood drives being canceled, the American Association of Blood Banks says there’s been a significant decrease in people coming to blood centers… Read more »

I actually commend DeWine for this, although I am no fan of his. When the Federal government is in complete denial and is absolutely incompetent, state and local needs to take the lead.

My response is that science for sciences’ sake, especially space exploration, has led to countless developments in technology that have been adapted into medical devices, telecommunications, digital photography, environmental technology, GPS, and countless other fields of applications. You don’t live the quality of life you do today or have some of the medical procedures or technologies you have without NASA research. And you don’t necessarily know which technology will revolutionize another field when the technology is initially created, implemented, improved, or adapted by NASA. But much of it will find its way to other fields, commercial applications, and subsequently everyday… Read more »
The same goes for Defense research, although that is rarely science for science’s sake
Thanks for the laughs guys. You are both so good at perspective and light-hearted takes, really needed it this week.
And Tom, you are so right about this pandemic being a shot across the bow of our preparedness. It could be so much worse, just imagine if this was hitting young children and adults. It would be straight-out-of-the-apocalypse-movies bedlam.
Just hope we learn a lot. Im also interedted in the results of the social distancing experiment.
Very interested in those results – thing is, we won’t really know the effect of this intervention. We’ll just be where we are, and authorities will say (rightly) that it would have been worse without it. Opponents who lobby for more stringent measures will say we’d have been better off. We’ll only have models to look at, much like climate change but much more immediate. There will be the aspect of comparing countries and their differing policies, but climate/population density/compliance/genetic susceptibility will likely confound this. Probably won’t stop bragging rights (ie racism) from being broadcast Ok, from my demeanour you… Read more »
