Recap: Bulls 108, Cavs 103 (Or, The Cavs Are A Professional Basketball Team)
2020-03-11I’ve been out of the loop for a few weeks as far as basketball is concerned. Between work, finding a new apartment, a rec basketball league, and a girlfriend, time has been limited. I’ve read about each of the Cavalier wins, and the fact that they have been hovering around .500 since the All-Star break has kept me wanting to catch a game.
Tonight, was the perfect one to catch. Yea, the Cavs lost to a Bulls team that was 2-7 since the break, but they looked like a professional team. They were as the pundits say, “Mentally strong.” There was a purpose behind what I witnessed. The breakdowns were there, as they will be for any young team, but the breakdowns didn’t send the team careening towards a waterfall of ten straight misses and twenty breakdowns in transition.
If you look at the 3-pointers on paper in this game, the Cavs should have been blown out. The Bulls hit 12-34. The Cavs went 6-24. Yet, the Cavs lost by just five. Cleveland nearly dominated in the transition game getting 32 points to Chicago’s 20.
Collin Sexton had a heck of showing putting up 26 points on 12-16 shooting working off the ball for the majority of his shots. Larry Nance Jr. put up 16 points on a perfect 6-6 night to go with six assists, two steals, four rebounds, a block, and just one turnover. And, Matthew Dellavedova had eight times and just two turnovers.
Rookie Coby White led the Bulls with 20 points, but had nine turnovers. Denzel Valentine provided the pace for the Bulls going 6-12 from the floor for 15 points. And, Wendell Carter Jr., the man who looks like he’s 250 pounds, but is apparently 270 pounds, dominated down low for 17 points on nine shots.
In the fourth quarter with 4:52 left, the Cavs chances to win seemed slim. Otto Porter Jr. canned a 3-pointer over really strong defense by Larry Nance Jr. to put the Bulls up by ten, 97-87. The Cavs had hit just two 3s up to that point. In the whole game…
Delly turned that around though. The following possession he broke open and nailed a top of the key wide open 3-ball off a Kevin Love pass from the corner. Nance found Delly the very next play, and Delly ripped another 3-ball over a late closeout from White. The game was within four.
The Bulls put up another quick four points, but Sexton returned fired with one of his only, “I got this and am gonna dribble long enough I make you feel uncomfortable,” moments of the game. The step back dropped in perfectly though.

Delly drove a play later and dished to Nance in the corner for a 3-pointer, and then Sexton tossed a perfect pass to Love who was jogging up to the 3-line from the paint and had his man over play him and wind up behind him as he stroked it. After the ball went through the cloth, the Cavs trailed by two, 103-101, with 1:26 left.
With 13 seconds to go, the Cavs were down just two and had a chance to get one more shot, but Collin Sexton missed a boxout on Shaquille Harrison as he looked to leak out before the ball was secured, the joys of watching a young guard. Harrison got the offensive board and was fouled. He made both free throws to ice the game.
It was an aggravating finish to a very entertaining game.
The Cavs were pass happy all night. In the first quarter, they had nine assists on ten made shots. The emblematic play of the quarter came about halfway through. After Larry grabbed an offensive board, Sexton just jetted to the lane for an easy layup off a pass.
Go up and get it, @CollinSexton02!

Sexton stole the ball from White the next play and found Love in transition for two. The team was playing for each other.
The only blight in the first twelve was Andre Drummond letting Daniel Gafford grab an offensive board over him and dunk it down and then turning it over with a charge the next play. Drummond had six turnovers this game and that one was one of the worst.
The Bulls scored, but for the most part they were working for their makes, every one of thier made 3s were contested early on. After the first the Cavs were up, 29-27.
The second and third quarters were essentially extensions of the first. The Cavs had seven more assists in the second and seven in the third. Delly was making magic with his passing. He was the smooth pass bookend (how are there not bookends of NBA players). Look at this Kevin Love find to start the second.

And, naturally, the bookend Delly opened the third with a great pass too on a long lob to Drummond.

Cedi shined a bit in the third quarter despite having a 4-16 night. Cedi had a filthy block to break up an oop to Coby White; he also slammed it down in transition after Nance grabbed a steal.
Cleveland’s only issue defensively, and this is grasping for straws, was that they gave up a bunch of open 3-pointers. The Bulls just seemed to break open a little too much in transition or off junked up plays.
Gripes
- Andre Drummond. Come on…The last time I saw him I don’t recall him wearing the shirt under his jersey. This is never a good sign. It usually means the guy is getting fat. Drummond is fat.
- Drummond is a turnover machine. He had six this game (he had 21 points and seven boards), and he seems to be a black hole when he gets the ball down low. He dribbles the ball too high, doesn’t look for anyone who is cutting, and just doesn’t seem very strong right now. He used to put the Cavs into the basket with ISOs when he played them. Why can’t he do that now?
- He is also lazy on defense. He will watch guys grab boards over him instead of evening going for the ball. At this point, he’s taking his player option cause no team is paying the pudgy dude who seems like he has canola oil smothered on his hands.
- The Cavs just need to hit some 3-pointers. They aren’t going to win many games when they hit only six.
- Kevin Love had 17 points on some questionable shooting and six assists. 13 of his 16 shots were from deep. He made just two 3s. I know some of this is a factor of Drummond occupying the paint, but I want to see Love do more. He makes too much to just shoot 3s.
- His passes were wonderful. He found the cutter more often than not, and he seemed to be moving to the right spots. Maybe, the team needs to find him more, maybe he needs to demand the ball down low more. He just can’t shoot 3s all day, some of the day is fine.
Hypes
- Cedi Osamn shot the ball terribly tonight. He was blown up at the rim a few times. He’s doing the right things though. He’s getting to where he needs to be, so now he just needs to start making shots. If he does, he could turn into a 20 point a night scorer.
- Collin Sexton can play off the ball now. He’s a fiend at it. Nine of his 12 makes were assisted on. All of his makes came in the paint. Sexton wasn’t pounding the ball at all.
- In fact, none of the team was pounding it aside from Andre. The team just moved the ball around all evening. They had 29 assists on 40 buckets. There wasn’t really a primary ball handler.
- Lauri Markkanen is a crappy version of the current 3-point bombing Love. He went 3-9 from deep tonight and had four boards. I’m sorry Bulls fans, he isn’t becoming Dirk in this current NBA.
- Delly needs to stay in the starting line up. He’s just so dang steady. His constant talking keeps the ball moving somehow, and he makes a difference offensively without really needing to shoot it.
- He made me realize that the Sexland backcourt is even worse than previously thought. The team looked professional tonight, and that’s a change. It’s no longer a my-turn, your-turn offense. This is no longer pick up ball.
The Cavs are in Charlotte Friday looking for the win.

We are all feeling it NOMAD. I’ve been barely able to concentrate on my job and kids, spending a lot of time tracking stats and tut-tutting lacking government responses around the world and here at home. Leadership at a time like this matters for many reasons, one of them is to alleviate the level of alarm in the community.
Poor leadership and messaging exacerbates this, and it’s been sadly on show in the US as well as Australia.
amen Simmo
I am so glad the NBA took this sh!zz seriuosly. As the son of a compromised 60 year old father…it matters that we take precautions. 97% of the population would be fine even if they are infected. 3% would literally die in a week. I have on of those 3% that I interact with every week. So do most people. Sorry to get confrontational, but screw you if you think covid19 is not that serious. It isn’t worse than the flu in infectiousness. But it is literally novel. No one has antibodies to it. anyway i’m sure most of you… Read more »

NBA led the way at exactly the right time. It made international headlines and caught the attention of many decision-makers around the globe. “If the organisation of such a lucrative sport can take it seriously, so can we” was the message received. It made a difference.

Yeah, this sounds like a cheap shot. Rudy was careless, touching stuff? What about every other player? Bet they were doing a lot of touching, too.
Woj tabloid stuff. The implication is there to garner attention.
I’m sure a lot of Jazz players are blaming Rudy, because people are stupid. Any single one of them could have been infected instead of or along with Rudy.
Yeah. Likely impossible to know who first contracted anything from anywhere given how much these guys travel. The mike thing was a bit careless and casual, but clearly meant to be an innocuous joke. A lot of people still probably don’t expect to be carriers if they are asymptomatic.

What? Can you sue somebody for contracting the flu? I don’t see legal precedent for this at all. Could you sue someone for infecting someone with a disease they couldn’t know they have? As in, if they were not tested for said affliction there is no case. It is one thing to know, as in knowingly infecting someone with an STD. There is no way there is precedence for something like infecting someone with a virulent disease when the individual has no knowledge of their infection. This is ridiculous. Also it would be impossible to prove in court as tracking… Read more »
Sorry, John. This was irresponsible without context. I assumed everyone was aware of Rudy’s ridiculous actions earlier this week which was a bad assumption on my part.
https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/rudy-gobert-touched-every-microphone-at-jazz-media-availability-monday-now-reportedly-has-coronavirus/amp/
Ah I see. Yeah that’s dumb on his part. Yeesh. No idea about legal ramifications, but certainly irresponsible and childish of him.
Yeah. But also see above. Rudy likely didn’t get these guys sick. They could very well have all got it from the same person Rudy got it from.
Oh sure. Just saying, maybe don’t mess around like that given the context of what is going on. Just sort of unnecessary. That is the opposite of taking common sense precaution. More dumb than anything else.
If a reasonable person would have known they had the disease, or a high probability of having it, and then you act recklessly towards someone in a manner a reasonable person should know can transmit the disease, then I do not see why basic negligence could not fit the bill. You have to have a duty of care present.
Heck, if you know you have it, and then act in a way to transmit, that could be criminal. I think there are AIDS/STD cases along these lines.
Depends on what Gobert/Jazz knew (or should have known), when they knew it (or should have known it), and what they did/didn’t do that caused the spread.
Aids stds are different as sexual partners are the definite vectors. Not easy to necessarily possible to prove the source of transmission with virulent airborne/water droplet born diseases.
Besides he didn’t have any idea he had it so any case would be impossible even if you actually somehow could prove beyond a reasonable doubt he actually was the source of transmission to others.
Probably due to lack of test kits

FWIW, Gobert is an idiot. He was pissed at the NBA limiting media availability and mocked it by licking the media table, on Monday.

I mean these are some of the most fit and physically healthy young people in the world. I won’t say this is an overreaction, but wowser.
Granted the risk of contracting it due to close contact on the court and the locker rooms is probably extremely high so even if they continued to play you might see it quickly spread throughout the league. Even if the players are healthy and physically hearty enough to deal with the symptoms you might end up with the same result with so many guys down/in isolation for illness while they recover for extended periods.
It is not just a matter of person A getting it, but being OK because they are young and healthy. What about all the people that person A comes in contact with? Are they all young and healthy? A certain percentage of those people will be positive. And all then the people THEY come in contact with? Look, I agree that to some extent the cow is already out of the barn. The virus has been in the US since early Jan (Washington) & spreading for months. There are over 1,000 confirmed cases, but alnost assuredly tens of thousands. If… Read more »
Fair points. Can’t argue really. But I suppose opportunity cost comes down to what probability large steps, so to speak, have to slow it down. If there are so many cases that no large steps can be taken other than completely halting contact in most scenarios including work, then what is to be gained? What is the CDC’s level of confidence that number of estimated cases are correct? 80%, 90%, 95%, 99%? Is such an estimate in confidence interval even possible in a complex social biological situation as this? Not all people can telework. Some people, by definition, have to… Read more »

Yikes!
Wtf!!!! Wowser.
Gobert out with an “illness” – Thunder/Jazz games gets postponed right before tipoff. I’m sure Rudy is going to get tested for COVID. If positive, I wonder if NBA will start cancelling games.
” MORE BEER PLEASE___AND ZINC & COPPER TO TOP IT OFF ” —–STAY SMART / STAY HEALTHY
Think it is only a matter of time before the NBA goes fanless. Dubs games are there. NCAA tourney is there. Seattle & SJ games in MLS are postponed. Italy has suspended Serie A and all sports, and a player for Juventus is positive. Spain is leaning towards fanless or suspending.
Might help us with a road heavy schedule.
I’m not worried about it. Pandora is out of the box. It’s coming, or rather already here whether people want to admit it or not. Seems to me, the strategy is no longer containment, but rather preparing as much as possible for exponentially increasing outbreak and everything that goes along with that. Live your life. Obviously be extremely attentive to hygiene and don’t put others in danger by exposing others. But I am skeptical that mass cancellations of public events is going to do much. You can’t just stop life for the year or multiple years it is going to… Read more »
You do not need a year, you just need a couple months and the virus will burn itself out. That is enough time for infected folk to have the disease run its course, and time enough for asymtomatic folk not to be contagious anymore.
The key is breaking that cycle. So, no, don’t just “live your life” right now. Make adjustments if you can. Avoid large gatherings. Stay home if you feel sick. If symptoms persist, go to the doc & get a test for cold/flu. If THAT is negative, you need a real covid-19 test.
That’s fair. Not saying don’t take precautions. By all means do. But I think burn itself out is probably wishful thinking based on comparing it to the flu. I don’t know. Not a doctor. Maybe you are. If not, Simmo weigh in por favor.
Sorry for absence on what is a big day for the league. And sorry if I repeat any points you have already covered. DISCLAIMER – I am scientist, not a medical professional, and haven’t worked actively in the field for a few years, so I’m not on the cutting edge now. But luckily, viruses and their ways haven’t changed in that time. Please don’t take my information over that of your health authorities in your area. This virus is so virulent that it’s unlikely to disappear, on the contrary it’s likely to become endemic worldwide over time. Because it’s so… Read more »
I suppose delaying to allow build up of supplies and response, as well as spreading out the consequences is a good reason. Short term versus long term effects. Thanks Simmo!
They’re gonna suspend the ncaa tourney too.
Nice cap, David. Wanted that one. But enough goodness to offset the bad.
Great recap. Sexton has made undeniable improvements. The progress combined with his age should be enough to satisfy people with some perspective. He will make mistakes, but so do most second year guards taken after their freshmen year. The combo of Garland and him was and always will be the problem.
Why did the Cavaliers use waste product Matthew Mooney another short point guard the fourth on the team in meaningful times of a closely contested game? If a bad ingredient is used in a meal that is similar to putting a novice un drafted player into a closely contested game. Although Mooney had a +6 differential in the 13 minutes he played a suitable player would have had +10-+12 and may have been a lift to winning the game. On offence the Cavaliers were playing 4 on 5 as Mooney was not guarded just like his substandard counter part Dean… Read more »
We’ve only had 2 healthy guards for a while. Delly & Sexton cannot pkay 45 each night. We only played 8 guys. If Mooney does not play, it is seven. He was fine.
The problem is we are only carrying 13 NBA contracts, and one of those is out for the year (Windler). With Garland, Porter, Exum, and TT out, some of the 2 ways/10 days have to play some.
Nice review. You’re right, the last few Delly games have highlighted just how abominable watching Sexland has been. There’s something about Sexton’s play that just makes me disregard his scoring. It looks like losing basketball even if the offensive numbers are good. Darius Garbage should have been in Canton, or college, all season. He might eventually be good but he is clearly mentally and physically underdeveloped at this point. Looks like #30 overall pick, not #5. Andre Drummond looks like an expiring career that will turn into an expiring contract.
I doubt they would have been in that game without Sexton, regardless of the last minute. Sexton working within the flow of the offense is actually a pretty good player. He will still make mistakes, but you can’t really be that displeased by him since they would likely have been blown out without his hyper efficient scoring last night. He is scoring nearly 21 ppg as a 21 year old second year guard on reasonable efficiency. Hard not to be satisfied with that from an eighth pick. He is out performing a number of the guys taken before him and… Read more »
That’s funny I find it easy to be dissatisfied bc scoring ain’t winning. It’s tunnel-vision ball, it’s losing basketball overall, and it’s dubious to watch. You be satisfied; I’ll be watching terrible basketball that some desperate fans have to tell themselves is encouraging.
Moot point now, but 26 points on 16 shots and zero FTAs is hardly losing bball. Did he have some turnovers and mistakes in the last minute or so? Sure, but then again the game is 48 minutes and they aren’t in it if he doesn’t have a spectacularly efficient game scoring. To expect a lot more at this stage from a 21 year old second year guard taken at the eighth spot who has, save for Young and Doncic, far more responsibility and a larger offensive role than other players in his draft class seems pretty unrealistic to me.… Read more »
