Podcast Episode 224: Rank Salesmen
2020-05-20Lamenting our stasis and the state of the national conversation, Nate Smith and Tom Pestak jumped into the virtual podcast booth to try to get back into a Cavalier mood. They started out taking bets on whether the NBA would resume this season, and then talked a little about the only NBA topic of late. ESPN’s The Last Dance documentary and the Jordan era Bulls spurred a discussion of how Jordan would do in today’s era, and then what a lousy teammate he was. It sparked an interesting follow-up: who is the least liked great Cleveland athlete?
For Tom, it’s a pivotal member of the Cavs’ championship. For Nate it’s probably a Cleveland Brown great. We dove deeper into ranks, breaking down ESPN’s top 10 and top 40 NBA all time list as we talked about the greats. We both thought Kobe was a leetle high at 9, and that Nash was way too high at 30. That led us down a road of ranking the all-time Cavs and reviewing how our 2014 #CavsRank list holds up. We discussed the all time Cavalier rankings and how key guys from the Cavs’ championship stack up with the guys on that list. Where do you put TT, Kev, and J.R?
Finally, Tom and I got into some stories of awful salesmen: Tom relayed a tale of a ridiculous door-to-door exterminator, and Nate learned to never give his number to a lending website. Consternation ensued and confrontation ensued. Stay safe everyone, and hopefully there will be more basketball in all our futures.

AGREE WITH YOU JASON —ON THE POSITIVE WE DIDN’T JEOPARDIZE OUR DRAFT POSITION
Thanks, NOMAD. I read that he draft lotto will be based on the standings when play was suspeneded, unless a team moves IN/OUT of POs. So, we’d have been locked into #2 regardless. No downside to playing. Heck, when Fedor says our top tier is Edwards (another guard who hogs the ball and is indifferent on D), Wiseman (played fewer college games than Garland), and Ball (cannot shoot, indifferent on D, brings the circus), I start to HOPE we fall out of the top 3. I think all 3 have Dolly Parton written all over them (and I don’t mean… Read more »
Boo to no more Cavs games!
Bickerstaff only got 11 games. He went 5-6. Had our starting lineup for 3 (2-1). In the loss, missing TT, Fonzie, Exum.
Games played/available of those 11:
11: Sexton, Cedi; LNJ, Delly
10: Love
8: Porter
7: TT
6: Drummond, Garland
3: McKennie, Exum
0: Windler

Reopened comments. Hoping to get some new content up this week.
Wes is certainly one of the all-time greats. And the greatest Bullet (maybe Elvin Hayes). But Wes played his whole career there. Coached there.
RIP. Sad news.
The blurb said pneumonia. COVID?
could be… major uptick in pneumonia deaths, suspicion that they’re getting mis-reported.
Oh no.

POPOVICH FOR ‘WRITE ‘ IN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE—–HAS MY VOTE !!!
God, I wish…with Kerr as VP…but I would vote for almost anyone over 4 more years of this sh&t….
Another benefit of pushing the season start for 2020-2021 back is the possibility of a vaccine. I think if there is a chance for fans to attend, you take it.
December is probably a pipe dream, but perhaps not.
HAVE BEEN ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE PUSHING FOR A SHORTER SEASON ——-SO MAYBE THIS WILL INITIATE THE CHANGE
NOW I READ WHERE THE DRAFT ISN’T UNTIL LATE SEPTEMBER —WHICH MEANS WHEN IS THE NBA PLANNING ON STARTING THE “NEXT ‘ SEASON —-HOW MUCH TIME ARE THEY GIVING ALL TEAMS TO AQUAINT WITH NEW PLAYERS —ALSO SO CALLED “FALL ” LEAGUE FOR THE ROOKIES / PRE -SEASON CAMP / SCRIMMAGES / ETC——STILL SAY THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER OFF FORGETTING THIS SEASON —GETTING READY FOR NEXT SEASON ———-OF COURSE EVERYTHING CHANGES ONCE WE SEE WHAT THIS VIRUS LOOKS LIKE GOING INTO NEXT FALL / WINTER ………………STAY TUNED ……….STAY SAFE
People have been suggesting over the last couple years that it would make more sense to push the season start date out to Christmas. Think this makes that likely
Well, looks like the Cavs are done for the year. 22 teams max.
Booooooooo!
I guess the upside is we are locked into the #2 spot pre-lotto. But I wanted to see Sexton, Porter, Garland, Love, Nance, Drummond, Cedi, and Bickerstaff get a bit more run together.
HEY NATE ANY WORD ON “THE EVIL ” ONE —-HOW HE IS DOING / ETC——MISS HIM BEING AROUND CTB
Maybe Donald meant “slugs”…?

for very interesting ytube presentation on vit d (pre-dating covid).. watch “d is for debacle” ivor cummings.. an engineer who waded into the vit d swamp
Good advice from Buck.
Am taking D and eat a good bit of broccoli, eggs, and onions. Could do better on the other stuff.
Am I alone in dreading what the Cavs would do with a high pick this year? This feels like Bennett, Dion, Garland all over again.
Even when we draft a guy who can play (Kyrie), he is a head case.
Not thrilled with Edwards or Wiseman. Iffy on Ball.
I don’t think you are. I like Hayes, but honestly, highest floor player is my guy.
I hope Cavs are like 3 and take Hayes.
THANK YOU “:DR ” BUCKAROO—GOOD HEARING FROM YOU—GOT THE 12 PACK / DAILY / COVERED —-ALWAYS TAKE MY –‘D ” ZINC -GINGER -TURMERIC / ASHAWANGA/ELDEBERRY / ETC DAILY—-ALL GOOD VEGGIES ON THE FARM INCLUDED WITH HOME LAID EGGS —STAY SAFE / SMART MY CTB BROTHERS
watch the medcram videos on ytube.. reliable science-based analysis of covid by an intelligent icu doc.. bittom line, for me.. hospital blood data says low d and low glutathione are killers.. so, what to do ? take d3 several times a day (4-6000 iu/day).with fat.. AND.. take n-acetyl cysteine (nac), a building block of glutathione (600 mg/day).. AND.. eat foods or supps with sulphur-containing amino acids (garlic, onions, ginger, eggs snd brassica (cabbage, brussells sprouts, broc, bok choy).. also chk out ivor cummings, on vit d.. good luck all.. I’d think they’d want a couple warmup games before the POs start.
Get everyone to the same # of regular season games. 70. 72. Whatever. Then go POs.
World Cup-ish groups was an interesting idea. But like the link said, I think Eastern teams fear it as a prelude to ending conference seeding.
As normal, the ESPN lists are always terrible. Old guys WAY under ranked (Mikan & Pettit were in the 30s, FFS). Mikan is top 10 (15 at the outside, and Pettit top 20). New guys way too high. Nash at 30? Steph and KD and Dirk. Though Steph and KD could warrant higher places before they are done. No way Bron is #2. I am not sure Jordan is #1. He is certainly on the medal stand for me. With Russell & Kareem. Bron & Wilt battling for the final Rushmore spot. Then Magic, Bird, Duncan, and Mikan in some… Read more »
now that cats out of the bag, heard insider say this is a possibility, latest rumor is that Silver shot it down last minute, not sure if its gonna go to an owners vote: https://www.theringer.com/platform/amp/nba/2020/5/26/21270365/nba-restart-world-cup?__twitter_impression=true
PER WINDHORST –( MAKE YOUR OWN OPINION )—NBA SERIOSLY CONTEMPLATING NO REGULAR SEASON–JUST GO WITH 16 TEAM PLAYOFF —WOULD BE ‘SOMEWHAT ‘ IN FAVOR OF THAT ————-HOPE ALL OF YOU HAD A SAFE / ENJOYABLE HOLIDAY WEEKEND ——JUST WATCHING PEOPLE IN MY AREA / READING–WATCHING THE NEWS—AM EAGER / OR WIL BE DISSAPPOINTED / FRUSTRATED TO SEE THE NUMBER OF VIRUS CASES 2 WEEKS FROM NOW —AM SURE THERE WILL BE A HUGE SPIKE —-HOPE I AM TOTALLY WRONG !!!!!
Yeah. I tend to agree, NOMAD.
Bundesliga is started up again, but Germany has more testing/tracing available & much lower case numbers.
If they do decide to restart, I’d guess they’d want a couple games (at least 5), to get everyone back into shape/rhythm. Gonna be pretty ragged to start.
GOOD POINTS JASON —STILL THINK NBA SHOULD JUST FORGET ABOUT THE REGULAR SEASON –JUST GO INTO SOME TYPE OF PLAYOFF FORMAT OR BETTER YET FORGO THIS SEASON —-PREPARE FOR NEXT SEASON —-DON’T JEOPARDIZE IT / BOTCH THE ENTIRE NEXT SEASON BY ‘FORCING / BEING TOO STUBBORN / CHASING THE ” $$$$ ‘ S ” PLAYING OUT THIS SEASON
You know, if the NBA restarts in the bubble, and plays more regular season games, the Cavs draft position will likely suffer a bit. When we stopped, the Cavs were 19-46. We had played the most home games in the league (36), and had the largest home/road differential in the league at +7. Other teams around us in the standings (wins, home/road differential): GSW (15, +4), Minny (19, even), Hawks (20, +1), Pistons (20, even), NY (21, even), Bulls (22, +3), Hornets (23, -3), Wizards (24, even). The schedule is still tough, but taking out the 5 home/12 road finish… Read more »

HEY SIMMO THE MRS NOMAD USES THST LINE ——‘ DON’T START SOMETHIN –WON’T BE NOTHIN ” EVRY NIGHT AT BEDTIME : – )
LOL! Well the best defence is a good offence, right?
really nice piece up on the Athletic about Larry Nance Sr. https://theathletic.com/1812604/2020/05/20/catching-up-with-larry-nance-sr-drag-racing-fan-letters-cavs-role-and-more/?source=fbpcadsbc&ad_id=23844756901670092 “I’m the only one in the world who can ever answer that, because it’s never happened,” Nance said. “But it’s a proud moment all the time for Larry, for me and his mom to watch him out there because of the Cavs and he’s wearing my jersey. And he gives 100 percent. He plays hard all the time. It gets my heart about to burst out of my chest when I’m watching them because it’s just, you know, I’m just so proud of the situation and so lucky… Read more »
“…injuries ands being weird” is pretty much my reason for most of my failings. Q for the hosts: Is this the shortest pod CtB has ever recorded? Story: I had a cable salesman not take no for an answer at our door last week. Like Tom, I said “I’m working?”. I started to close the door. HE STUCK HIS FOOT IN THE DOOR. Surprisingly, this had happened to me many years ago (experience is such a great teacher), and I had a line I’d pre-prepared just for this occasion. I said “”DON’T START SOMETHIN’, WON’T BE NOTHIN'”.He immediately apologised and… Read more »
Haha – wow. Yeah the salesfolk are getting desperate!
I think our shortest was like 43 minutes
