I think you are right. In depth analytics definitely have their place, but they still lose the context in which the player is placed. Also, they have no way to account for potential.
Look at Sexton year 1 vs now. Still a work in progress, but there has been a lot of work. Analytics are great and useful, but the eye test still matters when planning for the future.
