Podcap: Cleveland 112, Rockets 96 (Or, Let It Rip)
2021-02-25The Cavs handed the Rockets their ninth straight loss tonight going 16-36 from 3-land. The Cavs looked dominant at times when they were playing in transition and letting the ball fly every chance they got from behind the arc.
Jarrett Allen had an absolute monster showing getting 26 points on 10-11 shooting to go with 18 boards. The Cavs were getting him the ball in the post like he was some form of center from 1999. He even blocked four shots. Collin Sexton had 23 points and three assists. Darius Garland had 11 points and went 3-11 from deep, but he hit all three of his 3s in a row during the 3rd quarter to help the Cavs outscore the Rockets by ten.
Dylan Winder hit 4-4 from deep for 12 points. He is now 9-9 in the past two games. I’ve heard he is planning to rip off a 100-100 3-ball net stroking session in the next 20 games.
John Wall and Victor Oladipo combined to go 15-38 for 37 points along with seven rebounds and eight assists. Daniel House Jr. had 14 points and tried to dunk the ball a bunch, which was admirable. The Rockets offense of do whatever and drive a ton just couldn’t get it done tonight. The Cavs held them to 40% from the floor.Â
David Wood and Nate Smith dared enter the realm of the podcast booth to talk about the Cavs and a variety of other topics. They hit on why the Cavs need to just let it rip from deep, how great Dylan Windler (the South Paw Ginger Kyle Korver) is, Isaac Okoro, how the Cavs are great at post entry passes, who deserves to be in the All-Star game, why Sexton doesn’t need to think as much, why Trae Young is the absolute worst, MVP choices, coach of the year, and a ton of other fun topics.
This pod does have a little bit of R-Rated language in it, and Trae Young’s shenanigans are to blame.

THOMAS –NOTHING SPECIAL—HIT A COUPLE 3’S—-NOT AN INPACTFUL PLAYER IN MY OPINION
I am waiting for Sexton to look to pass first
I am waiting for Garland to break out
I am waiting for Okoro to become the best 3 and D in the league.
I am waiting for Nance to surpass his father
I am waiting for K Love to take us to one more dance.
I am waiting for Allen to carry us to the parade
don’t hold your breath
Did Brodric Thomas play in the KPJ game? How did he look?
WATCHED THE 1ST HALF OF CANTON GAME—–ALTHOUGH KPJ DISPLAYED HIS TALENTS HE ALSO DISPLAYED HIS ATTITUDE —QUESTIONING SEVERAL REF’S CALLS // NOT GETTING BACK–LOAFING ON ‘D” ( ESPECIALLY ON MISSED SHOT OR NO CALL ) –//GOT “T’D ‘ UP BY REF —-SO YEAH THEIR ARE STILL ISSUES // BAGGAGE TO BE WORKED ON TO GO ALONG WITH HIS TALENT —WILL SEE WHAT HAPPENS IF ISSUES ARE STILL THERE WEEKS// MONTHS FROM NOW IF ROCKETS ARE PATIENT WITH HIM OR GROW TIRED OF THE PROBLEMS
It was the aggression towards the refs last year that caught my attention. I saw an angry young man unable to control himself, and that was over really minor foul calls.
Yeah, that was a worrying flag.
TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU MIKEO—-WATCHING HIM RIGHT NOW ON GLEAGUE// FOX SPORTS —THE KID HAS TALENT —JUST ALOT OF BAGGAGE TO GO WITH IT
FURTHER KPJ UPDATE—-HE IS NOW THE LEADING SCORER IN THE G LEAGUE AND JUST POSTED A TRIPLE //DOUBLE OF 27 / 12 // 14 —–AGREE WITH WHAT BEN POSTED —-MAYBE THE CAVS COULD HAVE DONE A BETTER JOB OF HANDLING THIS —–BUT ALSO WE AREN’T PRIVY TO WHAT REALLY HAPPENS BEHIND THE SCENES // THERE MIGHT HAVE BEEN MORE TO IT AND ALSO KPJ DID HAVE PRIOR INCIDENTS
Far be it from me to defend the Cavs FO or ownership much, but from what people who cover the Cavs, or even sort of peripherally cover them, have said or hinted, there is crap concerning KPJ that isn’t public knowledge. The Cavs wouldn’t give up a talent like him unless they felt it was time to cut bait.
YOU PROBABLY HAVE A VALID POINT WEST COAST AND I AM ONE OF THEM THAT ALLOWS MY FRUSTRATIONS TO GET CARRIED AWAY AT TIMES —-HE IS A TIRELESS WORKER AND OVERALL SEEMS LIKE A GREAT KID—BUT ALSO AT TIMES IT DOES APPEAR HE IS ” ME 1ST ” MENTALITY // GETTING HIS POINTS AND YES HE HAS TO IMPROVE ON HIS PASSING AND DEFENSE—KOBY WILL NEVER TRADE HIM AND YES KOBY PROBABLY BEHIND CLOSE DOORS HAS MANDATED FOR SEXTON TO GET HIS POINTS DUE TO THIS IS THE ‘LAST CHIP ‘ WE HAVE IN THE KYRIE TRADE —IF SEXTON DOESN’T… Read more »
The CtB community is pretty tough on Sexton. Does he make mistakes, absolutely, but he’s just a kid. He has spent his career on a bad team and been handed responsibility beyond what he should be expected to shoulder. He always plays hard. He apparently is a tireless worker off the court. He has a chip on his shoulder and shows up at crunch time. That all sounds like Cleveland itself. His trend is absolutely upward. Compare his stats with Westbrook’s first three seasons: Sexton is a far more efficient scorer, he may not have the rebounding numbers, but The… Read more »
I think we are but it’s fair. The Westbrook comp is good because for all his faults he couldn’t win with KD and Harden and consistently failed in crunch time due to his lack of vision. The difference though is that Sexton is a much better shooter.
I like the kid, he just drives me nuts sometimes, and I question making him the face of the franchise over other guys. There’s also gonna be a big issue if he and Allen both get max extensions this summer. Just see clouds forming. Still is a fun dude to root for.
I disagree… his game is not conducive to winning. His teams haven’t won anything, and he’s already halfway thru the development bell curve.
I have no respect for guys that don’t defend and don’t pass…. also comparing him to Westbrook is kind of disrespectful to Westbrook, because he’s an infinitely better passer, defender, and rebounder than Sexton.
Westbrook 3rd year BPM: +4.2
Sexton 3rd year BPM: -0.6
Sexton’s 22, time’s running out on his development, he’s gotta make a quantum leap in his passing or defending to become as good as some Cavs’ fans think.
Cavs 3PT%s:
Garland 38.1%, Sexton 40.2%, Okoro 30.6%, Love 33.3% (1 game plus), Allen 50.0%.
Osman 33.2%, Windler 41.8%, Prince 41.8%, LNJ 38.1%, McGee 31.3%.
Dotson 27.3%, Wade 37.8%, Delly n/a, Drummond 0%, Stevens 12.5%, Thomas n/a.
Departed: Exum 18.2%, Maker 0%, Ferrell 33.3%, Bolden n/a.
The fact that Allen has knocked down a couple of threes last few games makes me love the dude even more, if that were possible.
Out of curiosity, I checked NBA.com’s recap of the game after having watched it myself. Of course, they featured a ton of Collin Sexton and neglected to mention much of his scoring was in garbage time after Allen, Windler, Okoro, and Garland won the game. That stuff annoys me. But, on the brightside, I too LOVE what Dylan is bringing. Beyond the obvious benefit of making all his threes, I have been consistently impressed by his floor game, rebounding and rim protection as a guard. He is longer than opponents realize. Jarrett Allen. Sheesh. Keep it up, big fella. Lineup:… Read more »
I like your proposed lineup, Ben, but the Cavs have been pushing Sexton as the face of the franchise for years now, so I doubt he’ll ever be anything but a starter, ever. My main objection to him as starter is that they are starting Garland, who can actually play PG, and it’s just a disastrously undersized backcourt. Only way I see this changing is if the Cavs miraculously win the lottery this year, and take Cade Cunningham, who has the size and skill to make sense paired with Garland or Sexton. In that potential scenario, I’d imagine the Cavs… Read more »
that’s definitely a lineup I want to see too. Biggest question to me is if Windler can hang in against NBA starters defensively.
@ MikeO as well, I’m scared about the Sexton extension or trades they missed out on because they value him too much.

Just realized Cavs will play this squad (Rockets) again on 2 March. Great to hear Nate fired up at the beginning of this one, excellent intro. “Jarrett Allen was sublime” along with Windler bombing away (TM Chris Fedor) is music to my ears.
when discussing Jarrett Allen it really does seem clear that if you leave Drummond out of the picture entirely, that Allen is an upgrade from TT, although TT was trying to develop a three-point range in his twilight year/s with the Cavs
David is right about PJ Tucker – not a likeable guy but it is still sad somehow that he had an uneffective game. “He is a poor man’s Draymond” indeed!
Still gobsmacked that the Cavs got Jarrett Allen for very little and some pundits called it a bad trade for the Cavs.
CANTON PLAYS RIO GRANDE THIS FRIDAY / 7:00 ON FOX—REASON I MENTION THIS KPJ IS ON RIO GRANDE HAS BEEN PLAYING– ( PLAYING WELL )– THOUGHT YOU MIGHT WANT TO VIEW—-WILL BE WATCHING WITH MIXED EMOTIONS
I’ll probably try to catch some of this to see KPJ and it’ll be mixed emotions for me as well. I really hoped that the Cavs would have kept that situation under wraps and would have tried to have a sit down to go over the locker thing and get both sides talking. There were/are definitely some character issues but the Cavs knew that. I understand why they did it though. If they are truly trying to build a specific culture and are preaching that, you can’t have those situations come up and not have ramifications. If this had been… Read more »
A supreme, borderline All-Star talent. I am hoping he keeps things together and he can have the career his talent warrants. If he does, it will certainly reflect poorly on the Cavs’ ability to handle a tough situation.
What I never understood is why we didn’t just send him to the G-League to work out his immaturity like Houston has done. Anyone have insight?
G-League just started, I don’t think that option really there while he was with the Cavs earlier this season.
‘R’ rated pods are the best pods haha let it rip guys!! Young is extremely annoying and got hyped up due to shooting 35 footers but the truth is out that he’s not really good and is just a volume shooter….lame As for the last two games, its nice to see team winning and it looks great to see guys having fun and getting weight off from the losing streak. However, in perspective the last two teams stink and Cavs should have won. What happened last night winning by double digits is what shoudl happen against other crap teams. Its… Read more »
WOULD LOVE FOR WINDL3R TO BREAK KYRIE’S RECORD OF 11 // STRAIGHT MADE 3 BALLS —WOULD BE JUSTICE FOR THE BOTH OF THEM —–LIKE I POSTED LAST NIGHT // ESPN HAD AN ARTICLE ABOUT “PAPER MACHE TRAE ” AND HIS SHENANIGANS —–NBA ALLOWING IT RIGHT NOW//HOPING THEIR IS A RULE CHANGE DURING OFF SEASON ———-“RUN AND GUN AND HAVE SOME FUN —FEED IT TO OUR BIG MAN ALLEN “
I’d like to see a major rule change about all ways an offensive player can initiate a foul, and then get to shoot. In all sports it might take too long to figure out who is at fault, so they don’t do it. Might make sense to review all such stuff post game, and issue fines, or Techs, or mini suspensions, or something.
Look forward to listening to this tomorrow. Hard to discuss Trae without profanity. One of the most annoying players in the league.
