Open Thread: 2020-21 NBA Playoffs, Bonus: Koby Altman speaks
2021-05-30Hello again CtB!
As a bonus to the playoff open thread, here’s a quick recap/analysis of Koby Altman’s lengthy end of season press conference. Let’s dive into the takeaways…
Altman puts lipstick on a pig of a season
The most striking overall impression of the Altman presser was his overwhelmingly positive spin to a terrible 22-50 season that included the loss of the Cavs’ most talented prospect Kevin Porter Jr., and the inability for Altman to successfully handle two of the grizzled veterans on the team, Andre Drummond and Kevin Love. Altman’s optimism was frankly borderline nauseating and patronizing. The reason for such a characterization is because it left the impression of a lack of accountability for the team’s poor performance this year, as well as over the past three years. His optimism also failed to address the fact that they fell short of their own expectations they declared at the beginning of the year, to be in playoff contention. Altman was careful not to declare the season “a success” but was quick with the excuses of injuries and youth for the lack of success. While injuries and youth are reasons why the team didn’t win, there was absolutely no talk of how the organization will be held accountable in the future. Altman simply declared that fans should “be excited” for the future of the team.
Altman hitches his wagon (rightly) to Darius Garland and defends Kevin Love
Altman was effusive in his praise of DG’s play this season, calling DG’s highlights literally “holy shit” moments. DG’s name was repeatedly brought up by Altman, which clearly gave the impression that DG is the current centerpiece of the rebuild. It’s safe to say that Altman’s love for DG served as a complete rebuke of a midseason report by Sam Amico that suggested the Cavs weren’t interested in retaining DG beyond the rookie contract.
Altman also deserves full credit for defending Love against the multitudes of fans calling for a buyout or half-baked trades to get rid of the NBA champion and one of the best players in Cavs’ history. Altman noted that DG was statistically one of the biggest beneficiaries of Love’s presence on the court in the second half of the season. Also Altman shared that Love wasn’t healthy and returned too soon from his calf injury, and discussed improvements to be made regarding how the Cavs think about load management in the future once the NBA schedule normalizes. One of the most interesting comments from Altman regarding Love was about the offseason plan they have in place to return Love to 100% health, including the phrase “weight training.” Hopefully this portends to Love putting on some weight/strength to withstand more minutes in the low post where Love was so dominant in Minnesota.
Altman wants to keep Collin Sexton and Jarrett Allen (but at what cost?)
Altman was clear to imply that they will re-sign Allen once they are able to talk to him, noting that they gave up a first round draft asset to secure his services. Altman also made it known that he’d like to keep Sexton long term. The interesting part of the Sexton and Allen discussion was the measured response from Altman. There were no sweeping declarations that Allen and Sexton are “franchise cornerstones” that would imply a forthcoming max contract extension. Altman played it straight up, saying that he will speak to their agents and negotiate when the time was appropriate.
Altman is looking for “supplemental” vets and “length and athleticism” in the draft
In a question about rebuilding, Altman said that he’s studied the rebuilds of the Phoenix Suns and Atlanta Hawks, noting that both organizations made savvy moves to sign veterans that would help grow their young talent. He’s hoping to do the same thing for the Cavs this year, although he felt that getting Love, Larry Nance Jr., and Taurean Prince would obviously help getting a veteran presence on the court. The most disappointing aspect of Altman’s response to the roster is refusing to acknowledge the dearth of playmaking on the roster. Classifying Young Bull as a dynamic playmaker flies in the face of reality (15.5 assist ratio, NBA average 18.0).
Altman also mentioned that he’s looking to add “length and athleticism” to the roster through the draft. Altman unfortunately is still married to the idea of Sexland being a championship-level tandem. One might also infer that there’s a lack of interest on Altman’s part regarding the talents of guards such as Jalen Suggs or Jalen Green, the former of which would be a serious mistake. But with the offseason still in its infancy, withholding judgment is the appropriate response. But on a talent starved team such as the Cavs, it doesn’t augur well that Altman appears to be pigeon-holing himself into Sexland and/or looking exclusively at wings or bigs.
Shoutout to Kenny Roda
Kenny Roda of 1480 WHBC deserves a shoutout in particular for doing his job and asking the questions that hold Koby Altman accountable for his tenure. Roda’s questions were excellent, seeking the answers that Cleveland Cavalier fans demand. Roda made it worthwhile to check out the hour long press conference, so tip of the cap to Mr. Roda.
hey y’all started a new thread just to keep the threads under 400 comments LMFAOOO
Fascinating to see who picks up poison pill and domestic abuser Jason Kidd. I’d prefer Boston hire him, but Dame apparently likes him, so Blazers are probably the front runner at the moment. Steve Clifford also gone from Orlando by mutual decision. i think Stotts is a good coach, but he’s never put together a good defense anywhere. Hasn’t had the players in Portland, but I have to believe that Thibs could put together a more competent defense there if given the chance, even with their roster. Of course Kidd isn’t the answer to anything. His tenure at Mikwaukee is… Read more »
I actually think Stotts could put together a competent defense…. their defense was rated pretty good when Nurkic came back. Defense is all about having the right personnel who have length anyway, a coach can only do so much.
Take the Cavs for instance, having Dre/Allen/McGee took us out of the basement, and pre-All Star break with Nance playing, we weren’t far away from average… and that’s with playing a lot of abysmal perimeter defenders (Sexton, Okoro, Windler, Cedi, Dotson)
I hate to say it, but the Clips are probably the team with the best chance to beat the Nets. Especially if Ibaka can get back.
I don’t like them, but I am firmly in the ABB camp (Anyone But Brooklyn).
i finally figured it out.. the cavs need to apply to the G-league.. problem solved
Clippers defence on Doncic was superb the whole game. Every time he drove inside the arc there were multiple hands in his face. They adjusted, challenged THJ to beat them instead. He nearly did, but Kawhi came up big.
What adjustments will happen now? Game 7 is gonna be huge.
Looks like Mavs will have the away court in game 7, a massive advantage…
Ha haaaa! Nice one Mike.
Kawhi’s best game, coming off his worst…just locked in…
Wow, HUGE step back 3 from Kawhi!
Such a tight game…every time a team gets a few points ahead, it evens back out. Clips by 5…Clips, a huge 3 point shooting team, are 8/31 from three…
GOOD LORD KAWHI
It almost seems miraculous that neither of the Morris bums ever played for the Cavs at some time or other…
good to know cavs have some standards!!!
You’re not supposed to say it!!!
Dallas expanding the lead with Luka on the bench, Clips ready for Cancun
Doncic hitting fadeaways like prime MJ
Reggie Jackson lighting it up for the Clips…Doncic still seems to more or less have his way…
“PREACH IT BUCKAROO…….PREACH IT “–!!!!!!!
yo NOMAD bro.. how is it hanging ? glad you digging uncle buck blasting away at the windmills.. have a 6 of RR for the buckaroo.. how to de-stink the cav-nots.. now that is a biggie.. not sure they make anything to get that nasty stench gone.. so i will just dig PHX and ride with them boys for the duration.. be well dude
i hope chris paul gets to the finals.. and gets a championship.. old man river was passed around like high-priced toxic waste and seems to have landed on fantasy island.. and contributed to the growth and surge in PHX.. they have my vote..plus i love garbage that gets the stink off of itself..
This year the Cavs:
1) Lost their most talented player (Porter).
2) Lost their most talented coach (Gottlieb).
3) Royally sucked ater a 9-9 start. (13-41).
Could care less about losing Porter. Dude could be out of the league in another year or two. Based on reports about things he got up to in Houston, he may be headed for a early exit. Nice player in terms of raw talent, but not transcendent. Be amazed if he ever actually puts it together.
Gottlieb hurts.
My biggest takeaway from the post-season is that for the 4th time in 5 years Portland lost in the first round.
This is the “successful” team Koby modeled Sexland on. They lucked out & got to the WCF once. And got swept. By a team missing their best player. And this is with Dame being Dame. Chances Garland turns into THAT are slim.
Only the Nets had a better O this year. And the Nugs beat them in 6 without Murray despite Dame going nova. Modeling us due to Portland’s success is mind-numbingly stupid.
Koby hates good basketball… only explanation.
this team has no direction and even the Portland thing is Cavs trying to grasp at something….they have backup players across the board, maybe an argument for Allen but thats about it. No vet leadership either unless they convince vets to come here this off-season….team just isnt getting better and depending on young kid to lift them up will take time (2-3 years)…it stinks when watching playoff basketball.
No undersized backcourt has won a championship in the modern NBA. None. Zero.
Iverson reached the finals once in his career, put up little fight.
Sexland is a losing proposition.
so cavs have sweet baby pretty boy kolby numnuts (who had/has what on his CV?).. suns have james jones (a player and former champion, and with a cav-not connection) who is building a winner.. another fragrant steaming pile in a long list of CLE fragrant steaming piles.. the joke continues.. unabated
depending on if Lebron continues with Lakers until he retires, this is a weird stop as part of his career. Didn’t make playoffs, wins title, then knocked out in 1st round. He’s played with poorer supporting casts in his past but this may be first time he’s looked mortal and its in season 18. Suns are a great team so this isn’t stunning, be very interesting rest of the playoffs.
He isn’t as explosive or physically dominant anymore.
Some of it could be the ankle.
But prime Miami Bron is a long way in the rear view mirror. Ray Allen, Mike Miller, Shane Battier, and Bosh spaced way better than LA does. AD is fragile. And the much overhyped Schroeder/Harrell/Gasol acqusitions did not help.
Still, they were up 2-1 when AD got hurt.
Pack the paint has always been the best option on Bron. It is what the Spurs did. It worked 2 times out of 3 (and damn near 3/3). Despite Miami’s superior shooting.
He also tends to make the right play/pass a lot. Part of why he is great. But he cannot do like Dame does. Or MJ. Or Kobe. Or Bird. Because he is not that great a shooter.
Always thought of Bron as a Dr. J/Magic hybrid.
Yeah I think the ankle is part of it too. He was playing at an MVP level prior to getting injured – he just never looked like he had the spry in his step that he had earlier in the season.
That’s because he is older, and it is harder to summon the energy to win 1 on 5. He must be one of the oldest players in the NBA by now. Miami is the only time he has been on an all star team that compares with MJ in Chicago.
Seriously conflicted on the Becky-to-Boston rumour.
Heard Kara Lawson too.. should’ve fired JB for Lindsay!!!
Silver must be on suicide watch, getting a star like Kuzma knocked out so early in the playoffs…
Have been in zero dark thirty mode until I got thru DEN-POR replay, hard to avoid spoilers these days. Great game and series, deserved to go to 7 but DEN just too strong.
Lakers – no surprise.
From here on I think the Bucks will come out of the East, they match up well on the Nets. Will be a helluva series though.
hope so. like ’em a lot better than the nets
Monty Williams such a brilliant coach. Talking about the adjustment they made offensively for Booker…. told Booker to take the first shot because that’s the only open shot in the half court.
Booker was definitely too tentative in game 3… Defense sharpened up and he started to let it fly.

CP3 want to eliminate LeBron something fierce LMFAOOOOO
LeBron with a cheap shot on Ayton cool cool
Got em going
It was cheal
What would these guys have done in the late 80s, 90s, or early 2000s?
A joke of a call. It’s just a foul.
Yeah not surprised…
Hard foul. Not flagrant but I am sure it will be called it. Sigh. League has never been softer.
Best thing the NBA could do is eradicate these BS reviews.
CAM PAYNE WITH THE PASS THEN THE BLOCK!!!!!!!!!
how many kuzmas equals a sexton ?
I’d take Sexton all day. Kuzma blows.
yup… it true
No thank you to both
Lord yes. For all his warts, YB gets you 25 a night.
Hmm bron shoots a trey. Needs to pull the trigger like he is an all time great in a closeout game. Make or miss.
Hope he starts gunning those nonstop…
I mean it’s what he should do. For real. Where else would they score? Leave it all out there at least on o. Maybe he is just tired…..or has the beach on his mind.
He should probably go to the rim, but that’s hard.
Either way.
Grant Hill was right, but doesn’t wanna say LeBron quit last game already.
Yep.
Ha. Bron passes to suns player.
Booker having a night like his 70 point game. Throwing everything up and going in.
Not sure AD would have mattered had he been healthy the last two games. Except for lbj’s mentality perhaps.
Lakers got a little life…
Very little…
Really don’t understand why the Lakers aren’t relying on an MVP candidate like Andre Drummond…
LMFAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO:

Yep, going to need to be sharp while he’s watching from a pool in cancun.
Just a bit outside on that pass from bron lol. Cancun baby.
bron got any superman left in him ? i think not.. go PHX (i love losers who become winners).. hire some smart people (as opposed to idiots) and it’s amazing what can be accomplished
Enjoyable NBA action…
I AM LOVING EVERY SECOND!!!!!!!
Lbj already checked out.
thought he quit the last game.
Seemed like it.
He can’t win with those cats…
Shrugs. Playoffs. Closeout game. You throw up 35 shots.
Seen this story too many times with the Cavs. Lakers are done
Only question is if they lose by 20 or 40…
Father time
Hope those amazing Laker fans enjoyed that quarter.
Kuzma/ Drummond pick and rolls to victory.
CAM PAYNE!!!!!!!!!! BEST POINT GUARD ON THE SUNS THIS SERIES!!!
Talk about burying a team early in a closeout game.
It’s staggering how terrible this Laker team is outside of AD and Lebron. Ride Drummond.
