Cavs: the Podcast: (or, Cavs-mas Eve)
2021-06-21 Off By Chris Francis‘Twas the night before Cavs-mas.
Tonight, we have a special episode of Cavs the Blog Podcast for your auditory pleasure. Nate, Eli, and Chris gathered in Santa’s podcast studio, hoping to cook up some Cavs-mas magic on Cavs-mas eve. Yes, Virginia, the draft lottery, outside of the LeBron years, has really been the Cavalier Christmas over the last 10 years. As such, the trio discussed their hopes and fears for the draft, the prospects they have their eyes on, and the possibilities that exist should the Cavs’ luck take a fateful turn.
For the second half, Nate and Chris chat by the fireside and reminisce about what has been an exciting and mind boggling NBA playoffs. Have we witnessed the obliteration of four franchises in this past couple of weeks? Are we witnessing the emergence of a changing of the guard among the NBA’s elite? Is building a superteam of stars the only way to a ring? Nate and Chris also pay tribute to the greatest championship in NBA history, the 2016 Cleveland Cavaliers (RIP to the late, great Fred McLeod).
So sit back, relax, and enjoy the Pod before Cav-mas Eve, and be sure to leave some milk and cookies for Adam Silver.

Ayton turned out to be pretty good. Not the superstar I thought he might have been, but hard to be that as a big today. Nonetheless a big contributor to a very good suns team.
He’s good. Also doesn’t seem to have the ‘star’ complex, at least at this point. He’s fine doing the gritty work, and isn’t demanding the ball for crappy post ups.
he’s an elite role player. need those type of guys to win.
I think he has a higher offensive ceiling than a lot of people think… his touch is amazing, wouldn’t surprised me if he adds a 3ball later in his career.
I did not know that rule on an inbounds pass. Cannot be goaltending.
coaching, front office.. drafting.. and bingo.. sheit into gold
Phoenix will win it all this season.
man i surely hope so…. been rooting for them!!!!
They have it all. Superstar. Great Point Guard. Well coached. Good bench. Can defend.
Oh and a front office lead by Champ.
I’ll take whomover comes out of the west. Though Clips will need Kawhi back to have a shot.
What’s the story with his ACL – haven’t heard anything definitive.
He’s done for the season. Might even take awhile to get back next year.
So he must be under the knife shortly then I guess. Bummer.
HOLY CRAP THAT WAS RIDICULOUS!!!! AYTON DA GOAT!!!!!!!
Suns win.
Wild finish in PHX. Playoff P bricks 2 FTs up 1 late after PBev forces a TO on Booker. Suns miss a triple but ball retain possession with 0.9 left. Alley-oop dunk to Ayton. Reviewed for offensive goaltending but it stands Clips ball with 0.7.
Wow.
2018-19 Phoenix Suns Roster and StatsRecord: 19-63, Finished 15th in NBA Western Conference
there is a lesson in those stats..
Get CP3 and the first pick?
i am going to buy some Suns merch..
Brilliant finish
wow.. buzzer beater for 2-0.. go PHX.. that must have been fun to see live
Lol. PG13 bricks the freebies.
Clips fighting back! Wish I could watch. Following comments on Twitter. Disappointed in my CtB brethren not keeping a thread going on the game here – it’s like you are all distracted by something…..
Rockets have an intetesting choice. Do Mobley & Wood work together? Or do you take Green?
yup, i think they take Green, but was told they like Mobley.
I really hope they love Mobley that much.
Just to clarify, I’d be fine with Suggs. I usually like high floor guys who play D, can shoot, playmake, and be a plus on both ends.
But I just think from a roster construction standpoint, Green or Mobley make more sense, and both have higher ceilings. But I am a happy camper either way.
I just worry a Garland + Sexton + Suggs backcourt is too small, and forces Okoro to SF, where he is too undersized to bother a lot of the 6’8″+ SF types (LeBron, Kawhi, KD, Luka, Tatum, etc).
Yes, I agree… reasonable take.
I don’t think the Cavs are taking Suggs (although I love his game, and I’d be okay with it), but hard to imagine them taking him and keeping him, Sexton and DG long term. Somebody would need to be traded.
go PHX.. impressive.. these boys are for real..
Green,,,,,,, ,,,or Mobley if he falls.
Yep. This is straightforward.
Should be,,,but who knows.
so, what are the optimum sexton trades, given the #3 pick ? boys.. splain me
To Philly for Ben Simmons.
saw someone going over potential Simmons’ trades, and they had Love + Sexton as one of them.
Pod, Chris?
nice.. luck seldom hurts, but smart is still required, otherwise, the well inevitably runs dry, and you are back in the white bowl vortex..
a brilliant trade and a sage choice at #3.. perhaps something special might be possible.. here’s hoping..
Wow I just read that in Thanos voice
AGREE WITH YOU MIKEO
unpopular opinion but I agree.
He’s basically Scottie Barnes in guard form, but shows more ability to score…. shot almost 40% off the dribble, which is Luka territory.
https://twitter.com/ChrisFedor/status/1407513555369447426?s=20
I love Suggs, I wouldn’t be mad…but it would make some sort of trade more likely, I’d say…
Yeah I honestly don’t know… but if we don’t get stuck paying Sexton max/near-max money, I consider that a win regardless.
I could see DG and Suggs being a hell of a backcourt…but the Cavs would have to make some hard decisions, and of course they’d get clowned by NBA twitter and media for taking another ‘point guard’…
Just goes to show people don’t watch Cleveland. There’s no way watching Cleveland and not realizing the two biggest things missing are playmaking and shooting.
Suggs is a point guard tho. Suggs and Sexton might be a better combo.
Suggs guard the opposing SG and Sexton the opposing PG
Suggs play PG on offense and Sexton SG.
I just think Garland has a higher upside than Sexton. Put two dudes who can shoot and playmake on the court together…I’m in…
no kidding
Im down.
Yep. Suggs is actually my personal preference. Green has much higher ceiling and Suggs got a higher floor.
I see Suggs as a taller and better version of Mike Conley. Stable good facilitator, good defender, can score if needed be, great leader and has the intangibles.
Green can possibly be James Harden type of scorer.
Either way I’d be good.
Yeah, I think Conley is a decent comp…I think he’s going to be a really good player for a long time no matter who takes him…
yeah, agreed… as far as Suggs’ MO.
I think my preference would be Green just because of his G-League production and fit next to Garland… but wouldn’t be mad at either.
Hahaha I’m flipping between Green and Suggs everyday. It’s a good problem to have.
100% same!!!! LMFAOOOOOOOOOOO
DID A “CLF ” NATE
IF ROCKETS TAKE GREEN THEY ARE GOING TO ” STIR UP THE ASHES ” WITH KPJ—-KPJ I DON’T THINK WOULD WELCOME THE GREEN ARIVAL —WOULD VIEW THIS AS ” BALL // POINT COMPETITION ‘ THINK WE WOULD SEE THE “UGLY SIDE ” OF KPJ RESURFACE—-JUST MY OPINION
Maybe cavs could trade for him.
Or wait to see if he gets cut, then sign him.
See a lot of fans of teams like the Thunder (and honestly, you guys tanked more egregiously than Hinkie’s Sixers, so you deserve nothing) talking about how the Cavs move up every year, screw them, etc. Might want to do some research, there, Hoss.
I AGREE WITH RUNNING JUMPER ( PATIALLY ) ——-EXPLORE TRADE FOR SEXTON —–KEEP D.G.
What do u think the Cavs could get for the third pick?
Jalen Green ;p
Or better yet the more appropriate question is,
What do you think the Cavs could get for SexLand?
Time to move Sexton to the bench!!!! LMFAOOOOOOOO
Agreed. His kind of play really fits a 6th man.
the fates demand it!!! LMFAOOOOo
They’re not trading the pick IMO, especially if Mobley goes 2 IMO, which apparently I’ve been told by someone who knows someone in the Rockets org that they like Mobley.
Really tough for me to guess who the Rockets might take…I could easily see any of Suggs, Green, or Mobley…heck, I could see them trading down for more picks, too…
yeah I assume Green honestly, but when I said that my GC I was informed of my friend’s source in the Rockets’ org.
O.K.LET THE “DEBATE ” BEGIN—— TO TRADE OR NOT TO TRADE —- I SAY HELL NO UNLESS IT IS A TOTAL ” KNOCKS YOUR SOCKS ” OFF OF A DEAL
” KISS THE DOG AND PET THE WIFE …….AND MORE BEER PLEASE “—–I CAN HANDLE BEING IN TOP 3 –AND DON’T SCREW IT UP KOBY !!!!!!
Wow! Top 3. A legitimate chance at either Green or Suggs.
Saw a Hollinger article where he has Scottie Barnes ranked 3rd. Big wing.
Anyone familiar? Another guard wouldn’t sit great with me, though have to draft for talent still
It’s gonna be Green or Mobley IMO, whoever falls… outside chance of Suggs.
No thanks on Barnes for me, not a shooter or scorer.
Did not realize he is 6”5. That sits much better.
yeah, and uber-athletic…. jumps out of the gym.
Great defender, long, good passer, shot has to come a ways. He’d be a great fit on the Cavs, but I’d take Green at 3. If Green goes 2 for some reason, it wouldn’t be a crazy pick…
If you have a chance to have Green you go get it.
always rate talent over position. Otherwise, you take Dion Waiters instead of Damian Lillard
Wow….. top 3!!!?
I was honestly expecting 7, so when they went in the top 4 I was totally delighted…
Can’t believe it honestly. Lmfaoooo
#3! Now don’t mess it up Koby…
3rd…great shot at Green…
Woohoo!!!
Cavs top 4!
Pleasantly surprised already.
Mood.

sorry to ask – but what the hell DID happen with KPJ?
https://www.cleveland.com/cavs/2021/01/cleveland-cavaliers-agree-to-trade-kevin-porter-jr-to-houston-rockets-for-future-second-round-pick.html
This article has a good explanation
thanks!
Hope Love balls out at the Olympics. Gets some joy back. He, Bam, & Dray are the only bigs in the roster. KD would be #4.

let’s go lottery luck!!!!
As i noted on the pod, im rooting for 8th.
You crazy. Root for #1!
do you get enough naps?
a top pick would help this team quite a bit, but part of me wants this team to get like outside the top 5 and force mgmt to think critically on how to build and develop a team if things don’t go their way. i really believe if this team doesnt get a top 5 pick tonight the franchise is dead because I don’t see how current mgmt and coaching staff will be able to properly build and develop a contending team (for the playoffs).
Watching the playoffs is heady stuff and can make fans of lower-echelon teams feel like they are never gonna make it. But honestly, had the Cavs not had several key players out for chunks of the season, I think they would have been close to not just the play-ins, but the playoffs. KLove, LNJ out etc.
KPJ situation (whatever one’s opinion on it) exacerbated the manpower problem.
And then we look at a team like Atlanta, average age of player almost exactly the same as the Cavs….to me, the difference (apart from health) is coaching.
McMillan for Pierce was their biggest addition. Under .500 at ASB. Tied with Philly for best after McMaillan hire.
Yes, adding vets like Capela, Lou Williams, Bogey, and Gallo helped. Yes, Trae leveling up and figuring out how to help the team when his shot is not falling helped. Yes, the play of some of the draft picks (Trae, Huerter, Hunter) helped.
But Nate getting a group of guys not known for defensive chops (Trae, Bogey, Lou, Collins, Gallo) to at least play competent, cohesive D AND share the ball on O is the biggest difference.
ATL has much more high-end (and mid-level) talent. Cavs should’ve played KPJ before trading him as well, in order to increase his value. If HOU was to trade KPJ today, they would get something good in return, as his value went up with some playing time. We really need to get a good draft pick this draft to increase our talent!
Hi C:tb Fam! The events in recent years for me, as a Cavs fan from the Philippines, made me miss a huge chunk of NBA games especially the Cavs in the last couple of seasons. That includes posting here (last I remember I posted here was 2018??). Well life happens. I know we are all feeling down but hey, here we are again. A chance for another fresh start. I hope we get a top 3 pick. But more importantly I really wish this time we get someone that could really be a cornerstone of another banner raising in the… Read more »
Welcome back man!
Love your sentiments. I have been feeling for a while now that Dan may be close to selling the team. This would provide the biggest chance for a full reset – new management installed etc. If it happens I hope we get someone who lets the GM do their job, and knows when to fire the GM when they don’t.
Thanks man.
I don’t know if commenting here is something I could do on even on a semi- regular basis. Work load and the time zone never did me a favor. I just tried to catch some lottery related news so I checked out here. But I’m happy to back-read some of the posts.
An owner that has enough money and wants to keep the team in Cleveland is not such a bad thing. Recall that the original Browns moved to Baltimore because Modell was broke. And the Indians astoundingly stay competitive with about 1/3 (pure guess) of the payroll of most contenders.
Yeah somehow. But I’m looking at it at a positive for both parties. Dan is recovering from a health condition and we all wish him well. He’s done than enough for the city and its franchise despite us fans feeling like we deserve more (read: we do). Health first and foremost. I know it wont happen overnight. Also there are rumblings that his eldest son might take the mantle one day soon and I could be ok with that. Dan has never proven to build a competitive team without a LeBron type of player. I guess what I really wanted… Read more »
Runningjumper!!! Hell yeah good to see your name pop up! 100% agree, need a real coach and gm, cavs dan make it happen!!!
