Cavs the Podcast: July Anxiety (or, The Collin Conundrum)
2021-07-15 Off By Chris FrancisLate on this hot midsummer night, with only two weeks until the 2021 NBA Draft, Nate Smith, Elijah Kim, and Chris Francis gathered in the global CtB bunker to process the Finals, the Olympics, the 2021 NBA Draft, and the current hot topic among NBA circles: are the Cavs trading Collin Sexton? According to reports, the Cavs and Knicks seemed to have serious discussions trading the 22 year old guard but the talks broke down. Eli is on top of the case, giving everyone a break down of possible destinations.
Chris starts to get onboard with Nate’s “Cade Cunningham and Josh Giddey” draft agenda as the CtB crew touches on all the Team USA and FIBA basketball action with more than a few current and former Cavs enjoying the FIBA spotlight. Eli has the scoop on Jonathan Kuminga and Evan Mobley, who apparently have just had private workouts with Cavs’ brass. Also for your listening pleasure, Nate gives everyone a few choice shows that should be on the binge list. So sit back and relax, and beat the heat with some Cavs the Podcast action…

Rich Paul and Adele. Didn’t see that one coming. Waiting for Skip’s reaction.
LMFAOOOOOOOO lucky Mr. Paul!!!
Now he is starting to hang with people with some serious money.
So torn on these finals. Don’t want either team to lose. Want cp3 to get a ring, but I also want NBA superstars to see they can win today in a small Midwest market if they’re drafted by said market and choose to stay and resign. Either way a win and a loss.
Yeah, I like whoever wins, just was hoping for a fun series, definitely delivering on that front
same.
Yep, been thinking the same. I came in rooting for the Suns, but at this point I think I’d be more bummed if Bucks don’t take it. Either way, going to be a great finish.
Like both teams and everyone but Crowder, so …
Agree wholeheartedly with everything above. I lean Bucks, but would be happy for the Suns and CP3.
And just a reminder, the Bucks are doing this without their starting SG. Granted, other team were missing more important pieces (Nets, Lakers, Clippers, Nuggets, etc), but Phoenix isn’t.
That was a classic finals game. Don’t think I have ever seen one with that level of FG & 3pt shooting from bith sides.
Was stunned Booker did not jump into Tucker for the foul when he got PJ in the air.
Absolutely iconic pic with Giannis dunking on CP3 and Bron looking like a total douche.
And CP3 shoving Giannis two hands while in air…
I don’t get the people that have not figured out how to wear a mask properly. Hey LeBron, cover your nose, dumb@$$!
WOW, Giannis now with two iconic moments, and what a game by Jrue and Khris…. and I think there’s still room for them to grow and improve.
https://twitter.com/oldseaminer/status/1416602863992811524?s=20
That pass was amazing…took a lot of guts to throw that in that point in time…
Incredible win by the Bucks…
Holy crap what a play by jrue.
Jrue just earned his contract and all the traded picks…
Another late game uncalled foul on Booker…
Bad defensive mistake gives CP3 a wide, wide open 3…
Wow…Middleton with an incredible and one jumper…
Bucks keep letting Paul get back to his right.
https://twitter.com/oldseaminer/status/1416596018540552196?s=20
Pretty smart game from Giannis so far…a lot different from Miami last year..
Helps when he gets assistance from Middleton/ Holiday…
oh boy CP3 big time 3….
Seeing eye triple. He’s done.
Dumb foul by Tucker…never understand why guys do that…
Booker is stronger than he looks.
Jrue’s best game so far…
25/11 and a +20 in 3 quarters…. sheesh!
Rather good timing…
nice run for the suns.. looks like we see tears of joy from anteto.. i would have enjoyed seeing paul get a ring (i am a sucker for such stories).. but at least he got to the finals and played well.. job well done bro..
Connaughton red hot from 3, balancing out Crowder’s BS…
https://twitter.com/oldseaminer/status/1416587276717547523?s=20
Middleton and Booker just trading tough shots…Giannis looks pretty exhausted, but making some nice passes…Bucks up 10…
Hell of a steal and three from Jrue…
Cheapo foul on Tucker…looked like a shove from Booker, but Booker ain’t getting called for that tonight…
https://twitter.com/liesandperfidy/status/1061353563991891968?s=20
That was an obvious three steps by Booker.
This is a really good thread, btw.

Portis is the only NBA player whose NBA2K depiction looks more realistic than him in real life.
Bucks would be fine if they stopped doing stupid things.
May be a non stupid 2nd quarter. Suns probably aren’t going to have another quarter shooting 75%, either.
God. Giannis has gotta stop shooting threes
Suns more active on defense, also getting the better whistle. Shocking, I realize.
If three and Garland for Cade was a possibility I’d absolutely do that move. It’s not though.
I can’t wait until the draft so all these ridiculous stories go away.
I would rather have both Morris brothers on my team than Jae Crowder. And I loathe the Morrii.
LMFAOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I think Simmons, draft trade up possibilities, (and Lillard) will likely freeze things on the trade front for the Cavs (Sexton & Love).
Anyone with serious assets will save them for those guys if there is any shot of it happening. Any deal we make will be after those situations are settled/clearer or at the draft.

I really liked what I saw of Franz Wagner in games I watched this year. He moves fluidly and confidently with good speed for a big man. With his shot and size I think he’ll be a valuable NBA player in short order.
Hell yeah Charlie! Hop on the Franz agenda!!!
Sooooo…. not exactly the showcase we hoped for from Love.
DO NOT WANT TO TRADE GARLAND
Me neither.
NO WAY. Not sure I would trade Garland even up for #1 pick. CC might have a higher ceiling, but Garland has a higher floor.
DG is likely a future All Star. Not trading him for a dice roll.
The four letter has us as one of 5 teams they think have enough to move up to #1 (Rockets, Warriors, OKC, Cavs, Magic).
Their deal is #3 & Garland for #1 + spare contracts.
Don’t think Detroit is trading down. There was even a story today basically confirming that. In any case, I’m not convinced Cade is worth what it would take.
Trading DG for Cade is a two steps forward one step back move… the whole point is to get as many offensive creators as possible, which would mean trying to pair Cade with DG.
The only way you trade Garland and #3 is if LeBron is 19 again.

sexton may have holes in his game.. but the young man has a work ethic and is not a check casher.. i respect what he has accomplished, even if it has not translated into wins.. kolby better be VERY careful.. he is treading in dangerous territory.. the franchise cannot afford a mistake..
Totally agree. He ain’t getting any taller, but he is getting a lot better. Has potential to be a really good sparkplug to enter a game and change the dynamic.
Expecting top dollar is obviously a problem. How does this situation usually play out?

Gotta love Love for what he has done, and being on the Cavs championship team. His defense when he got switched onto Steph in the last minute ranks up with Kyrie’s shot and LeBron’s block.
But extending Love for a rebuilding era was a bad idea for everyone involved. He was getting up in years and has always been injury prone. I was against trading Wiggins for him for that reason. That turns out to have been a dumb opinion, because Wiggins got an oversupply of underachiever.
Sad for Love, but he really does not deserve to be there ahead of guys like, say Julius Randle. Though I get why his spacing & rebounding was valued.
Sad for the Cavs as an opportunity to raise his value is gone.

his trade vale has no bound.. to the downside..
I would do the whole wry grin / head shake, but at this point I’m done and he should just go be a clothes horse for some sartorial outfit.
for me its all just humor.. i gave my blood and tears decades ago.. no more to give.. dried up and empty.. so i just fire away with my “buck-shot” humor at all of the pretenders.. truth is, many of you guys could run rings around the prepster and his ken dolls.. it’s a joke.. so laugh it up guys.. take the IVs out of your arms and laugh with abandon.. and “more beer please”
This trade feels fairish.

I’d take that. Think Jalen Johnson would fall to 13? That is a big swing.
Some mocks have him there!!! I think Giddey might go in that range, Wagner, Moody…
? They probably go earlier, but maybe they slip?
I would qualify that if only make this trade if certain guys are available. Similar to george hill/kawhi trade
for sure, exactly
yo chris.. thx for the great analytical justification for my purposeful emasculating humor aimed at the preppy one and his ken dolls.. i just run on contempt.. you added the substance.. we rock bro..
LMFAOOOOO at your service buck!!!

I AM SAYING BUCKS—WITH GIANNIS AND ALSO DEVENCENZO–( I KNOW I BUTCHERED HIS NAME ) HEALTHY AND WHOMEVER THEY DRAFT// PICK UP IN FREE AGENCY // OR TRADE —-JUST THINK THE ‘MAIN 3 ‘ ON THE NETS ARE ALL INJURY PRONED AND ALSO GETTING UP IN THE YEARS “BASKETBALL AGE WISE ” ——AGREE WITH YOU LEO ON SEXTON –WILL DEPEND ON WHOM THE CAVS DRAFT WITH WHAT THEIR ‘GAME ‘ PLAN WILL BE WITH SEXTON —–AS BUCKAROO HAS ” ELEGANTLY ” POSTED —BEWARE OF THE ” KOBY DOLLS “
I was prepared to be wrong about the Nets, but I always thought it was going to be a sh!tshow. Injuries & egos, but selling great copy as it plays out.
Curious what people think; between the Suns and the Bucks, who is less likely to be back in the finals over the next few seasons? I’m happy for either team to win, but bummed it could be each teams’ best, if not only shot to win it all.
Less likely would be Suns IMO….. Giannis >>>> than anyone on Suns roster, also Suns are in the West.
Yeah. I guess I may be overrating the Nets, but I mostly assume they’re going to be on top in the east for a while, but who knows what goes on there.
2 guys that can’t stay healthy pushing to the wrong side of 30, 1 guy who won’t stay in shape and is way past 30.
I don’t think you’re overrating the Nets BTW, just saying the injury risk keeps escalating with age.
Right, and I guess what I really mean is I might be overrating their odds. I figure the point of the Harden trade was to add some insurance against injury. I’d be surprised if they didn’t make it next year… but odds probably go down each year with age.
I got ya…. honestly I don’t think anyone could disagree with you that they’re prohibitive favorites…. might even have better odds next year because it’s another year together!!! But yeah, crazy how injuries took them out this year!!!
A healthy Nets beat the Bucks, easy. But will they ever be healthy?
The West is tougher on paper. But Bron is older, AD is still fragile, and Kawhi has a knee injury. A healthy Nuggets could be nasty as well.
I’d say Suns are less likely, just due to CP3s age. Bucks big 3 are younger, they have a longer window.
yup… Don’t discount Utah IMO either…. Mitchell will keep improving, and if they can make a move they become even more dangerous.
i think the Sexton trade will hinge on who the Cavs draft – if they go the guard route he’s gone…if they go Mobley or a 3-4 guy he is staying and they try to move Love during the season
could be!
BUCKAROO IS “ON FIRE ” WITH HIS KEN DOLL SARCASMS !!!!!………..THIS INVITE FOR KLOVE ON THE USA TEAM WAS SUPPOSEDLY // HOPEFULLY TO ” SHOWCASE ” THAT HE IS STILL A LEGIT PLAYER WORTH TRADING FOR —–WOW HAS THAT BACKFIRED !!!!!!!!!!!!
good eye. still hoping he has a couple great games, which he occasionally does. but the way things are going, he won’t get on the floor. an issue is that he was always injury prone, even in his early years. wasn’t he once out for months from doing push ups on his fists, or something like that?
glad you are enjoying them NOMAD bro.. i must say, they put a smile on my face when they roll off the keyboard..
Interesting that Beal might be out of the Olympics – he was one of the few REALLY flying the flag in the Aussie game. Of course I’d love to see DG get the gig if that’s the case. Giddey (I can’t check my Australian bias, so take It into account): his vision is the aspect of his game that drew attention from a young age. That is difficult to teach. His shot-making / release time is improving. He is not afraid of the moment, as I think I mentioned a few weeks ago he has been playing against grown professionals… Read more »
Hell yeah good stuff Simmo…. “He is not afraid of the moment” was absolutely the most impressive thing about Giddey, he seems to have that nebulous “it” factor that stars have!!!
Also fair point re: Sexton… he clearly sees himself as a star, yet missed the mark with his lack of playmaking.
mark my words.. sexton goes farther into the playoffs on his next team than the cavs.. over the next 3 to 5 yrs.. he is doing backflips of joy knowing he is moving on from the slow motion train wreck that is the cavs.. the cavs rebuild doesn’t start until klove is gone (with his $$$-sucking salary).. and even then, kolby and his ken doll haven’t shown that they can even come close to building a .350-.400 club..
I am not disputing Kev has not come anywhere close to living up to his contract. But his contract has not really prevented us from signing anyone.
As for Sexy, if he gets dealt to a better team (NY), of course they will go further. They did that without him.
I am not a huge YB fan, but I still do not want to sell for pennies on the dollar. He will be a RFA in a deep FA class. No need to rush. Plus, he could make another leap forward.
LMFAOOOO I respect the Koby slander!!!
@ Jason agreed, I think odds are Sexton is back with the Cavs next season.
how much is valid, and how much is Skip Bayless?
The Koby slander? 100% valid IMO, the Ken Doll bit is pure Bayless though LMFAOOOOOOOOOOO
i imagine kolby talking to his tiny friends as he dresses them up in little cavs uniforms.. and has the do slam dunks into a toy basket.. oh yeah.. leadership is deep at the cavs organization..
LMFAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
he might even do the play-by-play as he does two-handed contests between rookies under consideration.. i hope he has them learn some defense..
LMFAOOOOOO buck with the “buck shot” !!!!!!!!
what are you rating Koby on?
did Koby extend Love, or was that before him? I don’t remember.
Koby took a flyer on KPJ, a talented head case. maybe he could have made that work, but that is always a long shot
How about draft selection? Sexton, Garland, and Okoro ain’t half bad for the picks they had.
Choosing Sexton over SGA, not valuing offensive creation enough (Okoro over Halliburton) I’m pretty sure he was also Love extension, but don’t think that was wrong but definitely see the case that it 100% wrong. Hiring JB Bickerstaff, dictating play time to Ty Lue/Larry Drew/John Beilein. Mishandling KPJ, Love, Drummond. His inability to hold himself or anyone else accountable for poor performance. 100% believe the only reason why we drafted Garland and KPJ is because Beilein was the driving force behind those picks because of his knowledge of the college game and recruiting up and comers… I don’t give Koby… Read more »
I should add to the Love extension, the fact that he signed him and didn’t put a roster around him to actually maximize what he does well (low-mid post offensive creation).
The lack of an actual plan to either tank or compete.
I don’t think one has to look very far to see the faults of the Koby regime, people love to trot out that his draft picks were good, but the dude had Sexton rated ahead of Trae Young and SGA, sorry not ever going to trust a guy who looks at tape and comes to those conclusions.
and what possible way could anyone have put a roster around Love that would max what he could do? He can only do a good job in the shadow of something like LeBron and Kyrie.
I don’t see any way signing Love could have worked, other than it being popular with fans. Maybe a trade in the first year or so.
100% agree, so just add it to Koby’s tab!!! LMFAOOOO
Right. Don’t screw around when you are tanking.
And they had to tank for a couple years. There is no other way.
The way it would’ve worked is this: a. design the offense like Minnesota, which they never attempted. Love was a top 5 NBA offensive player in his prime, he can carry a team to .500 easily if the offensive system suits him. b. Load manage Love. They got him injured on an idiotic back to back, which an over 30 guy high usage guy should never do. Yeah he probably doesn’t stay healthy, but at least there was a legit basketball argument on Koby’s side. But since Koby half-assed tanking AND maintaining a winning culture, Love got pissed and rightly… Read more »
