Recap: Thunder 87, Cavs 94 (or, From the Desk of CLF)
2022-01-24Last night, the Cavs gutted out a real grit and grind game sending home the Oklahoma City Thunder with the loss, 94-87. The Cavs won this game because of three things: defense (held the OKC to sub-40% shooting), hustle (outrebounded OKC 54-41), and unselfishness (outassisted OKC 22-16). Let’s dive in…
1. Close Call for the Finnisher
Thankfully, Lauri Markkanen came out the game with only an ankle injury. It was such an ugly injury that the channel had to be changed until the action restarted. It really sucks that Lauri goes down just when he’s catching his rhythm offensively, as Coach J.B. Bickerstaff noted in his presser. Surely the services of “James” Dean Wade will be called upon in Lauri’s absence, too bad it’s via injury instead of Wade’s decent play this season. But, get well soon Lauri!
2. Cavs played with their food on offense
51.4% from the free throw line and 22 turnovers are simply unacceptable from an NBA team, let alone a playoff-bound NBA team. With the turnovers, at least there’s an excuse about injuries, moving parts, shifting roles and lineups. But the free throws? C’mon man! Disgraceful, pitiful.
3. Individuals stepped up
The Cavs’ starting lineup across the board really put their imprint on the game. Starting off with Isaac “Ice” Okoro, five rebounds and four stocks is exactly what the Cavs need from him. Ice has really found his groove defensively. Jarrett Allen had an efficient double double with 14 points, 13 rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. His board work was essential to the win. The same goes for Evan Mobley, who set a career high with 17 rebounds, and also turned a double double with 15 points. Darius Garland registered his own double double with a team high 23 points and 11 assists. The offense was simply non-existent when he was off the court.
4. The bench is lost without Rubio
The bench did not put in their best performance. Cedi Osman’s lost his shooting groove and hasn’t been able to expand his role. Brandon Goodwin couldn’t make a shot. Lamar Stevens’ defense wasn’t disruptive. Kevin Love’s struggling to find his touches and shots without his running mate Ricky Rubio. Coach Bickerstaff also shares some of the blame for not taking some risk and giving some other guys a shot, mainly Dylan Windler and Dean Wade. Figuring out the bench rotation and linups is a work in progress due to the loss of Rubio, which just goes to show how important Rubio was to the success of the team.
5. From the Desk of CLF
The subtitle of this recap was inspired by some of J.B. Bickerstaff’s comments after the game. Generally speaking, Bickerstaff was displeased about the performance of the team, that they played an entitled brand of basketball for a team that actually hasn’t accomplished anything yet. And it’s his right to say that, he knows his team best. But from an outsider perspective, it was really only the bench that played terrible from an impact stat perspective. The starters did their job and won their minutes. It appears that J.B.’s ire should really be directed at Koby Altman, for not making a serious enough attempt at a proper replacement for Rubio.
So, what’s Koby’s plan? Why haven’t the people of Cleveland been graced with one of his legendary missives from his office? Why the radio silence? The Rajon Rondo was a shrewd, prudent move but Rondo’s age and injury history will always be a limiting factor. Brandon Goodwin was another good move, but J.B. clearly lacks some trust in him and he is a limited player as a point guard.
The Cavs have six draft picks this year and next year. Koby needs to get some bodies in the backcourt, he has plenty of draft ammo and some tradable contracts to do it. 40 minutes of Darius Garland is not a plan. Get something done Koby, show the people why you earned that big fat extension!
6. Up Next, the Knicks
The Cavs will be recipients of some good scheduling fortune with the New York Knicks traversing to the shores of Lake Erie for their second game of a back to back. So while the Knicks will be desperate for a win to stay in the play-in race, they will have to play with some tired legs. The Cavs can continue to grind their way thru the NBA season with their elite defense. GO CAVS!
live thread up!
UNDERSTAND SCHROEDER IS A TALENT WHEN HEALTHY// FOCUSED —-WOULD HE BE A GOOD FIT FOR THE CAVS —–AGAIN THERE IS NO DOUBT WHEN HEALTHY// FOCUSED HE CAN PUT UP SOME VERY POSITIVE STATS —-TAKE THE OFFENSIVE BURDEN OFF D.G. AND THE OTHER PLAYERS —-WHAT WOULD THE CELTS WANT FOR HIM
I think they’d want the first round pick as a starting point, maybe would settle for the two 2nd round picks.
OK CLF — I FEEL MORE OPTIMISTIC NOW THAT I HAVE THE ” OFFICIAL CLF ‘ BLESSING ON POTENTIAL TRADES :-) IF LAURI IS OUT THE AMOUNT OF TIME THAT IS RUMORED THAT CAN BE A POSSIBLE 13 18 GAMES CORRECT—–CAN WE ” WEATHER THIS STORM ‘—-THINK KOBY IS GOING TO WATCH VERY CLOSELY HOW THE 1ST FEW GAMES ( 5–6 –7 ) GAMES GO WITHOUT HIM—SEE HOW COMPETTIVE CAVS ARE // CAN BE —THEN MAKE A DECISION TO ” PULL THE TRIGGER ” ON A TRADE OR STAND PAT —JUST MY OPINION ———–I AM GOING TO PREDICT THE KNICKS… Read more »
LMFAOOOOO I appreciate that NOMAD!!! I think the situation boils down to the fact that the Cavs’ don’t actually need a star… they need a 6th man/backup PG. There are clearly guys available and names have been dropped so usually that indicates a leaked trade offer. The Cavs will have to overpay because it’s an in-season trade, but they have a ton of picks, it’s hard to imagine they’d be rostering all 6 picks. I think Koby should be willing to liquidate all of this year’s picks if necessary, I think they could get a top 100 player (by EPM,… Read more »
I don’t follow the league too closely, but I was under the impression that Dennis Schroder was stinking up the gym lately. I what world is he a top 100 player?
EPM is an aggregate full season metric.
Last 12 games since returning from an injury that had him out a couple weeks. Looks pretty darned good.

NICE FIND BW!!! can’t wait!
I AGREE WITH YOU CLF —( AS I ALWAYS DO )—KEY QUESTION WHAT IS THE PRICE GOING TO BE FOR THOSE PLAYERS YOU MENTIONED—-CTB HAVE STATED MANY TIMES —-” DON’T TRADE THE FUTURE AWAY FOR S HORT TERM RIDE ‘
All the guys mentioned, outside of Derrick White I’d say, can be had for reasonable draft capital.
And the Cavs have 6 picks in the next two drafts, Cavs can easily make a move without “mortgaging the future”.
Not to hijack the conversation, but as a fellow graduate of WFU, Eli: How about them Demon Deacons?
I don’t like calling for action and not naming names. What is a realistic trade CLF could get behind? What for what?
Nice piece otherwise.
plentry of names have been named… Gordon, Lavert, Schroder, Joseph, White, Kennard, Bodgonavic…. any of the more than half-dozen names are all realistic/viable if Koby’s willingn to part with picks.
TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION—-NOPE
Is there a “proper replacement” for Rubio? One that is not going to cost a fortune? And is available before the deadline?
yes, there are plenty of “proper” replacements. As Fedor has reported twice, there a ton of realistic names they’re kicking around.
I believe he means can is anyone available that can replicate the impact. Skillset, competitiveness, leadership, and swagger.
no there isn’t. He was a unique talent in a unique moment in his career
I agree that there was a special vibe that’s impossible to replicate with Rubio, especially in terms of his big game experience in the Olympics over 10-15 years.
But there are guys who can play, which is what the Cavs need now.
For sure. I just don’t want the team to pull a stupid and overpay for a run this year when the day of the deadline we are in 1st or 2nd in the east
agree with scotch!
moreso the bench is lost without Rondo and legit vet guard to guide the ship. they are currently with a young guy who was playing minor leagues and while its helpful for now it won’t be long term. Cavs need to beef up vet presence at deadline if they cant strike big time deals. With Markk injury lets see what JB and staff do to adjust…I’d play Wade more to spread floor and occassionally play Ed Davis and have Mobely 17 feet out to give teams a reason to stay away from basket.
Hats off to you CLF for having the courage to write the recap for this one.
haha
LMFAOOO thanks Simmo!
NICE JOB CLF—-YEP ALOT OF UNCERTAINTIES “THAT HAVE CROPPED UP “OVERNIGHT ‘——OUR “BIG MAN ” LINE UP TOOK A 30 % HIT —WILL BE A DIFFFERENT LOOK // ATTACK FOR THE CAVS —-J.B IS CORRECT THIS TEAM ISN’T ENTITLED TO ANYTHING YET—THEY HAVE THE ENTIRE SEASON AHEAD OF THEM YET TO “CHASE// EARN ” THAT ENTITLEMENT AND 50 % FOUL SHOOTING WILL GET YOU AN EARLY EXIT COME PLAYOFF TIME ( IF WE MAKE IT THERE )—WILL BE INREESTING TO WATCH TONIGHTS GAME —BOTH TEAMS HAVE SOMETHING TO PROVE AND ALOT AT STAKE ———MY FEAR IS RANDLE EXPLODES ON THE… Read more »
Thanks NOMAD,
100% correct, it’s adversity season right now, this is what great teams have to get through in order to make a name for themselves.
