Podcap: Bucks 99, Cavs 115 (or, Good Vibrations)
2022-01-27Nate Smith and the two Chrises (Mr. Lyden and Mr. Francis) hop into the CtB podcast studio resort to bask in the glory of the Cavs’ statement win against the Milwaukee Bucks, 115-99. The win puts the Cavs in third place in the Eastern Conference and in the hunt for the first seed. The Cavs dominated the game even though they were easily the more shorthanded team and the Bucks came out like gangbusters in a fantastic first quarter performance. But NBA Champion Kevin Love and Cedi “the Jedi” Osman stepped up for the team and delivered MVP performances and serving a beatdown of the reigning champions.
Conspicuously absent from the CtB trademark two hour rap session was trade talk because, why ruin the good vibes? One of the most underrated aspects of team building is chemistry, and the Cavs have found something special. Just watch NBA Champion Kevin Love’s postgame comments, he knows what winning at the highest level looks like. So no trade talk, just good vibes…

Jason Lloyd making it sound like a Rubio trade is inevitable in his latest mailbag. Bummed but it probably makes the most sense.
Well, he will probably miss the beginning of next year, at a minimum. If we can stay under the tax, the MLE might be enough to re-sign him, if the initial trade does not put him off.
Taxpaying MLE of $5.9 mil is dodgier. We are close to the line already, and with Sexton due a raise….
Tax line is estimated at $145 mil. We have $107 mil in salary with 11 guys: Garland, Okoro, Markkanen, Mobley, Allen; Love, Osman, Wade, Stevens, Windler, & Pangos.
Davis &/or Rondo are min guys, bring both back and it is roughly $35 mil in space. Sexton’s cap hold is $19, now down to $16. Plus whatever salary we take back in a Rubio deal (gotta be over $10). Point is, I think we are headed for the tax next year, not sure the MLE is in play. Though Windler makes over $4 mil.
How did I not know Darius’s father Winston played 7 years in the NBA?
I don’t know man, because I’ve definitely mentioned it many times LMFAOOO it’s why I call DG a basketball prodigy cuz literally he is!!!
Oops! That is a downside of reading all day long, some facts you kind of know without ever thinking about them. Most prodigies, basketball or otherwise, started at an early age and had excellent coaching. It is likely that Mobley’s father and older brother played a big role. Same with Joey Burrow. This makes LeBron all the more remarkable. Probably Dru Joyce Jr. taking an early interest played a big role. I probably played in pickup games with DJJ back in the day, although I don’t remember him. People who did remember him in college say he was a serious… Read more »
yup, both Mobley and Burrow were coach’s sons!!!

I certainly hope Russ’s epic second half performance last night will get the Lakers to extend him, and make him a bigger part of the offense. He’s earned it.
FROM READING THE POSTS —THINK WE ARE ALL IN AGREEMENT—UNLESS THERE IS A LOPSIDED TRADE IN OUR FAVOR–( HIGHLY DOUBTFUL )—WE SHOULD NOT MAKE A TRADE ESPECIALLY NOT TRADING RUBIO// OR ANY CORE MEMBER —–WAIT AND TEST THE WATERS AT THE BUYOUT —BE PATIENT—-THE PRESENT IS NICE—THE FUTURE WILL BE GREAT !!!
agree
K Pop put Wiggins in ASG:
https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/huge-voting-push-from-k-pop-star-helped-warriors-andrew-wiggins-earn-spot-as-nba-all-star-starter/
That’s hilarious, and appropo. You could put old arse Iggy in his spot and likely get similar production
haha. I propose “K – Pop” as Wiggins’ CtB nickname!
I accept lol.
Gobert or Draymond should be in his spot.
Fans shouldn’t get a vote. Bleggh. I get it that it is for the fans, but it should be an honor for play, not a popularity contest. Wiggins should give up his spot.
Totally agree. At most, fans should get 1/3, not 1/2. Maybe: players 1/2, fans and coaches 1/4.
I ain’t buying “it is for the fans”. If it is, it should be for the fans who watch games and know something. The fans screw it up in every sport. Usually just by voting for guys way past their prime. Lately in BB, viral internet events put clowns in the ASG.
I say it is more for the players than the fans.
Bulls lose in SA. Half game out of second.
Heat won.

AGREE WITH YU JASON —-AM ALL IN FOR STAYING PAT AS FAR AS TRADES –TEST THE BUYOUT MARKET // DPE
There is a good chance that having Ricky next year will be more valuable than a lot of trades.
Can anyone estimate the chances of RR being on the Cavs next year if he is in a trade, as opposed to if he is not? I know this is complicated due to money issues.
Well, we got him in a trade, so his Bird rights should have come with him. Bird rights allow a team to go over the cap to re-sign one of their own players. Rubio was last a FA summer of 2019, so we’d have full Bird rights on him. We could offer him whatever we wanted. If we trade him and try to sign him as a FA, we’d either have to use cap space to sign him (we don’t have any) or use an exception. This one available to us would be the non-taxpayer midlevel exception, or around $9.5… Read more »
So I am guessing he will expect more than $9.5 mil, so if we trade him we are unlikely to get him back.
Of course, he might not plan on resigning anyway. Hopefully Koby has discussed this with him so he can make a smart move.
It is immeasurably more likely we have him back if we do not use him in a trade. And he will absolutely want to be back with this group if his attitude during the course of the season is anything to judge by. His interviews were glowing.
OK, that is what I was thinking. I say don’t trade RR unless it is a damn good trade!
Agreed. Only way I would is if he says he does not want to come back.
THINK THAT IS WHAT THEY WERE PROPOSING —-RUBIO’S CONTRACT—PROTECTED 1ST—-OR HOUSTON’S 2ND
It was reported today that the Pacers are demanding two Firsts in a deal for Levert. That ain’t happening.
Hell to the no.
In similar news…earth’s moon is asking for two first rounders and sexton’s contract for Neil Armstrong’s toe cheese.
And the philadelphia 76rs want 6 picks and a top 25 player for the guy they cant even convince to sit in the bench.
What a year.
JUST READING THE MEDIA TRADE RUMORS–POTENTIALLYCAVS LOOKING AT LAVERT// D WHITE—–I WOULD TAKE WHITE OVER LAVERT—-OPINIONS ??
Much of a muchness. White a better facilitator, a little better from three, Levert probably a little better scorer…wouldn’t want to give up anything ‘real’ for either, Rubio contract and a protected first, maybe…
White is more if a PG and Lavert more if a 2. Lavert is bigger. Shoots a bit better from deep. White is the better defender & facilitator.
They make arounf the same amount ($15 mil to $17 mil, IIRC). Lavert is inked for ine more year after this, White three. Both are 27.
For my money, I’d rather use the DPE, draft wisely, keep our picks, re-sign Ricky, and shop the buyout market. Though I guess we can make a run at Ricky either way.
Chris Lyden’s point about KLove not caring and just shooting over people: It’s the polar opposite of what he used to do. Back in ’16 and for 5 years after, he would pull out of his shot if anyone closed out on him. Super frustrating.
He’s such a pro now. He’ll wait for his guy to sail past, look down, bounce and centre himself and try again. He is so much more confident in himself, you can tell that the palpable anxiety that existed previously just does not exist anymore.
He’s free….
I did chuckle…

My understanding is the DPE expires when/if Rubio is traded (or released). The guy you got it for has to be on roster when you use it.
But if we use it first, THEN trade Rubio, we coukd net 2 players. The other way around nets us 1.
For that reason, I think we see a DPE use before we see a trade.
That appears to be the case.

Everyone is 1 or 4? WTF?
Robert covington rumored to be cavs trade target. I like him…but not instead of our younger guys…
yeah, he’s not what the Cavs need at all
Depends on what we give up. He makes $13 million. That won’t fit in our DPE. He’s a UFA after this year. So it is a rental, that should decrease his value. Rubio’s contract + a 2nd would get it done, I’d hope. Though I’d want to keep Houston’s. SA’s or a future one of ours would be better. But that does not give Oirtland much. We need ballhandling and wings more than a combo forward. Though he is an upgrade from Wade & Stevens. And a good team guy by all accounts. A first would be too much for… Read more »
Hopefully we can re-sign Rubio even if we trade him.
I need proof that he is an upgrade from wade and stevens beyond his mins. I genuinely like Covington but i do not recall him being the on ball defender either of those guys is.
WADE FOR HIS SIZE —MOVES WELL—QUICK FEET—-ALWAYS HAS HIS FEET MOVING —–ALSO REMEMBER BACK HOME IN KANSAS HE WRESTLES BOBCATS SO DON’T EVER–SHORT CHANGE HIS TOUGHNESS—SO GAURDING A TOP NBA PLAYER FOR HIM IS NO BIG DEAL
He doesn’t seem awed by Durant or whoever they throw at him.
YOU MENTIONED EARLY COMPARISONS —ICE TO KAWHI—-I THINK ICE RESEMBLES JIMMY BUTLER EVEN MORE——BUTLER WAS ALL DEFENSE WHEN HE IST ARRIVED WITH HARDLY ANY OUTSIDE GAME—RELIED PRIMARILY —( SIMILAR TO ICE ) ON TRANSITIONS// SLASHING–CUTTING TO THE BASKET —-IF ICE CAN TRANSITION TO CLOSE TO BUTLER—I AM ALL IN !!!
Yep. Kawhi is a lot bigger than Okoro.
Ice has trouble stopping bigger SF types (Durant, Kawhi, LBJ, Middleton, PG13, etc). And has almost no shot vs PFs.
But stick him in a guard (Harden, Jrue, etc) and he does a lot better.
love the comp to Jimmy,
Yeah- the comparison starts and ends with offensive development built over years on top of existing, out of the gate defensive capability
I almost changed this to the Beechwood boys.
Fedor choosing violence
https://www.cleveland.com/cavs/2022/01/darius-garland-trae-young-ja-morant-chris-paul-chris-fedor-reveals-2022-nba-all-star-ballot.html
Hard to argue. I personally would take DG over any of the young PGs in the NBA right now. I love Morant, too, but happy with Garland.
DeRozan plays forward for the Bulls, though, so the ballot is kind of a farce.
For me, East:
FVV, DeRozan, KD, Giannis, Embiid
Harden, Lavine, Butler, Tatum, Allen
DG, Young
KD replacement: LM Ball or Bridges if it has to be a frontcourt player.
Butler starts for KD.
Just missed: Brown, Sabonis, Ball/Bridges.
West: I like what Fedor did with the two C’s. Jokic is non-traditional. And I think Gobert is much more deserving than Wiggins (who Fedor ignored), Green, or KAT. I would have had two Cs on the 2nd team (KAT & Gobert).
No problem with the Suns having a starter. Grizz were like 10-1 WITHOUT Ja, IIRC.
CP3, Steph, LeBron, Jokic, Gobert
Ja, Booker, Wiggins, Draymond, KAT
Bane, ANT-Man
Oops, I left Donovan Mitchell off. He has to be there. And Luka. What was I thinking.
Goodbye to Ant and Bane.
Wiggins as a starter is a joke.
I got no problem with Van Vleet as the PG. KD, Giannis, and Embiid are no-brainers. DeRozan is listed as a guard even though he plays SF, and he has to be there. Fedor ID’s the contenders. Young & Harden have the best counting stats. But neither plays any D. Harden has been fat and out of shape and mostly lethargic most of the year and the Hawks have massively underachieved. No to both as starters. LaVine has been great. He MUST be an all-star. But I want a PG. The Hornets play awesome O and terrible D and Ball… Read more »

I hope Altman isn’t dumb enough to sign Lance…
YEAH ALSO READ ABOUT SEXTON WANTING TO TRY AND COME BACK FOR PLAYOFFS—–NOT SURE THIS WOULD BE THE BEST FOR HIM AND ALSO THE CAVS—–THINK THEY STICK WITH THE GAME PLAN– SIT HIM THE ENTIRE SEASON —-CAVS APPLY FOR POSSIBLY ANOTHER DISABLED PLAYER ESCEPTION——-THOUGHTS// OPINIONS ??
unfortunately i don’t think it’d make as much of a difference because YB still on his rookie contract. but don’t quote me I don’t know how the DPE actually works LMFAO
You get half the player’s salary, so one for YB would be a lot smaller.
But the one for Ricky would put us in the tax, while one for YB would not (I think).
interesting distinction, thanks for the info!
That is IF the full boat is used on a player.
I think Nate is correct that the list of guys under $8.9 on expirings that are useful & gettable is pretty thin. But it does make us valuable as a 3rd team in a three way. There may be guys a team would rather keep, butis willing to part with as part of landing a bigger fish (Allen in the Harden trade).
Waived or traded players have to be in last year of contracts.
I’ve been thinking about what they could do with Sexton. Most of the time he would make the Cavs worse.
But we suffer whenever DG takes a breather. That might be a good time to put Sexton in. If he can create some instant havoc we might break even until DG is back.
THAT IS ANOTHER ” ACE IN THE HOLE ” FOR CAVS TO USE —LOVING IT !!
https://twitter.com/kelseyyrusso/status/1486756014535987208?s=20
This is huge.
I was frustrated we had not applied for one for Sexton. Given YB’s recent comments about trying to come back for the PO’s, I get why we didn’t.
But this lets us sign a player without letting a guy go. Buyout market, trade, whatever.
SOMEONE PROBABLY KNOWS — I AM WILING TO BET –DUE TO COVID// INJURIES—ICE HAS PROBABLY ONLY PLAYED IN ABOUT 80 NBA GAMES/// 1 SEASON—-YOU ARE GOING TO SEE HIM GROW THE NEXT COUPLE OF YEARS AS DG HAS DONE
He has played 101 games according to basketball reference. No way I’d move on from him in some minor trade. I see too many flashes from him, and he’s super young. Also he is the only Cav point of attack defender.
Close. 101 games. 95 starts.
I do think that with a lot of the rookie/2nd/3rd year guys, COVID has really stunted their development. Not so much in terms of games, but in terms of practice time and development, especially off-season.
ROY: Mobley
COY: Bickerstaff
6th: Love
MIP: Garland
I’m buying!
AGRE WITH YOU JASON ON OUR “EDGE ” GUYS —MUCH NEEDED——POSSIBLY SEXTON WATCHING THIS VERSION OF THE CAVS WILL ALLOW HIM TO UNDERSTAND BETTER THE TEAM CONCEPT AND MORE WILLING TO ACCEPT A 6TH MAN ROW // COMING OFF THE BENCH// SETTLING FOR SOMEWHAT OF A REDUCED CONTRACT// THE MONEY WILL STILL BE THERE MAYBE NOT AS MUCH AS HE// HIS AGENTS WANTED AT THE START OF THESEASON —–TIME WILL TELL
Yeah. I’m hoping for Sexton to turn out to be a good thing.
Guy stuck with the Heat. He is guaranteed now.
Imho it’s evidence the Cavs won’t make a move for a guy like guy at the deadline
James (Freaking) Jones at Phoenix is a big proponent of drafting 4 year guys. At least once you get to the teens and below.
Hell yeah that’s awesome, great tidbit Jason! He’s a big calculator rat too.
The edge guys are Rondo, Stevens, and Davis.
The 2017 team was SUPER fun. There was just this imposing sense of doom because Dubs were waiting at the end of it.
SexLand is the reason Cedi & Okoro were out of position. Whether or not that is a tank or not is up for debate.
SexLand is politics. They think Sexton is a valuable piece but had to exhaust possibilities of SexLand before they got off it.
I would point out we were 7-4 in the games SexLand played this year.
For a time, we started a shooting guard who revealed he really is a point and the point guard who revealed he really is shooting guard. This was working itself out. With two minutes to go in a close game, I want the ball in Garland’s hands–five players are still involved. With Sexton, only one is…
right. closing a game is not the best spot for Sexton. he is kind of a very poor man’s Russell Westbrook — not likely to play smart, but he can put the ball in the hoop.
FEAR THE SWORD HAS A GOOD ARTICLE—-” MANIFESTATION OF GREATNESS” —DAMN GOOD READ !!!
Thanks. That’s fun!

big win for the team and giving guys confidence boosts they need….i still think trade will happen as there are some weaknesses on the team and when push comes to shove, teams will do whatever it takes to shut down Garland and Allen…will Cavs (as currently structured) be able to handle? this is why a trade needs to happen, they need another reliable scorer and possibly another big to help in those situations.
Trade might be good and might not. The Cavs are pretty good right now.
YOUR DOG IS RIGHT IN TUNE WITH THE CAVS —WOOF-WOOF –WOOF —–BARKING FOR A DIFFERENT REASON :-)
SO WE DIDN’T DO ” ROCK-PAPER-SCISSORS ” TO DETERMINE WHO HAD HONORS TO DO RECAP——–JUST GOT TOGETHER FOR A “SESSION ” NOT SURE IF ‘BEVERAGES WERE ALSO INVOVED :-) BUT SMART MOVE ON ALL YOUR GUYS PART —GREAT PODCAST GUYS !!!
I spilled red wine on my “good jeans”
That is why you need black Carhartts. The singed ones are pretty cheap right now.
On Love, I felt that Rubio coming was going to help him. Now, I certainly didn’t expect him to be THIS good.
On JB, Feb. 6th (AM) is the finish line for best record for ASG coach determination. Schedules:
1. Heat: 31-17: LAC, Tor, @Bos, @Tor, @SA, @Cha
2. Bulls: 30-17: @SA, Port, Orl, @Tor, @Ind,
3. Cavs: 30-19: @Det, NO, @Hou, @Cha
4. Nets: 29-19: @GSW, @Pho, @Sac, @Utah
5. Bucks: 30-20: NY, Den, Wash, @Port
We need to win out & have the Heat go 3-3 or worse.
In terms of seeding, I think the Heat are gonna be tough to catch. But 2nd could be doable pretty quick.
FWIW, at what point is the all-star game coach determined? It would be cool if JB was the cosch.
The DG pass/Mobley dunk was incredible. To my eyes, DG switched hands on the pass. It was not a no-look (which are almost always not no-looks but look-offs more like it). The fact he moved the ball into his left, off the dribble, because it was a better angle to pass. Incredible.
Allen did a pretty darn good job on Giannis. Better than pretty good. Likewise Okoro on Jrue.
Definitely a better win than vs the KD-less Nets.
Agree with Nate, most pumped I have been all year.
