Recap: Pistons 109, Cavs 113 (or, the Cedi Osman Episode)
2022-03-20The Cavs squared up their season series tonight against their Central Division rival Detroit Piston 113-109, with some virtuosity on offense and some mental toughness on defense. The Cavs saved their best for last scoring 31 fourth quarter points, their most of the night. Let’s dive right into tonight’s takeaways…
1. The Lake Erie Show, Cedi Osman Episode

The Cavs won this game with their offense, posting a 115.3 offensive rating for the game. It was the bench, spearheaded by Cedi Osman who really gave the Cavs the extra offensive juice they needed with the dead legs of a back to back. After a couple of games riding/resting on the bench, Cedi the Jedi was a force of nature tonight with an efficient 16 points, five rebounds, two assists, a steal, and a team high +33.9 net rating, over doubling the next highest player (NBA Champion Kevin Love). Cleveland.com’s Chris Fedor had reported that Cedi was in the doghouse after a lackluster effort a few games ago, but to the untrained eye it just looked like Cedi needed some load management. He was relentless attacking the rim and attacking the boards, which is something he notoriously struggles with.
The aforementioned Love was also a key part of the offensive excellence with a solid double double, 14 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, a block, and a +14.8 net rating. But don’t be fooled, Love has been solid as a rock on the defensive end. No, he can’t stay in front of quick guys off the bounce but he can put his body on the line and take charges and challenge shots at the rim still. He is also an elite rebounder who helped the Cavs win the rebound battle handily, 45-38. When Cedi and Love are really on their games, they play a really fun and exciting brand of winning basketball. These guys had the crowd absolutely rocking tonight!
2. Darius Garland, NBA MVP?

DG did it again, guiding this offense to new heights with another double double, 24 points, 12 assists, two steals, and a +4.8 net rating in 41.2 minutes. He was the recipient of the “junkyard dog” award from Coach J.B. Bickerstaff for stepping up to the challenge, playing all those minutes on a back to back. It took awhile for DG to get going but when he did, he was unstoppable. DG is the zenith of pure hooping, enjoy it.
3. “I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship,”
Evan Mobley turned in a Rookie of the Year performance himself with a stat stuffing double double, 12 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, three stocks, and a +6.6 net rating in 35.5 minutes. It’s amazing how Mobley’s offense has blossomed with the move to the center position filling in for the injured Jarrett Allen. He’s stepped up in his role as secondary playmaker and scorer, which is a heavy burden to bear for a NBA rookie. The chemistry is building between DG and Mobley, they are becoming an unstoppable force in the NBA.

4. Quick note on the Pistons
The Pistons were a feisty out tonight, and have had the Cavs’ number this year relatively speaking. Cade Cunningham has really turned the corner on his rookie year, and a second year leap should be expected. The problem is that they don’t have much more than that. Jeremi Grant was special tonight scoring the ball with 40 points, but trade rumors swirl around that guy similarly to what Love used to experience. Perhaps they can execute a Cavs-like offseason makeover. They have a lot of young pieces, but are lacking some grizzled vets with championship pedigree.
5. Next up, Return of the King Part 2
2016 NBA Champion LeBron James makes his return to the homeland as the Los Angeles Lakers come to town and help the Cavs finish off their five game homestand. Monday’s game is clearly the hottest ticket in town. Cleveland has really shown up for the team during this homestand, it’s going to be electric in the Rock. It’s impossible to ignore the symbolism of a young Cavs squad possibly vanquishing the man who built the Cavs into a championship organization. The Cavs should be expecting LeBron James’ best, fans should expect something special.
6. Playoff Picture
The Cavs have pulled to within a half game out of the fifth seed, and only two games out of the fourth seed of the Eastern Conference playoffs. The Cavs’ schedule from here on out is brutal, and frankly an embarrassment for the NBA that they’d roll out such a ridiculous schedule. The Cavs will be lucky to go .500, which will probably keep the Cavs in the sixth seed and removes the chance to get home court advantage. The schedule is so tough that it wouldn’t be surprising if the Cavs fell into the play-in rounds. It’ll be interesting to see how J.B. plays it down the stretch. The Cavs should seriously consider some load management to ensure they enter the play-ins/playoffs with bodies to play. On the flip side, the Cavs just scored two massive wins in 48 hours. Anything is possible, Go Cavs!
P.S. Injury note
The Dean Wade injury update wasn’t good. Rumors that it could be a torn meniscus, the same injury that sidelined Collin Sexton for the season. Here’s to hoping he’s OK.
ICYMI: #Cavs Dean Wade to undergo further testing on his sore right knee Monday, sources tell @clevelanddotcom. There is some worry about the meniscus. He continues to get treatment while awaiting clarity. https://t.co/2imLCn1zxf

they have no interest in playing the nets, probably happy to stay at the 3 spot.
maybe, but it is a little early to be fine tuning how the playoffs will unfold.
CONGRATS ‘HOLY ” MOSES —-NOW GO GET US SOME REBOUNDS !!

Deserved it.
100%
Along with the JA update (see just below), Shams reported Dean Wade, partial meniscus tear, expected out ‘several weeks’.
Time for the fantasy basketball league playoffs! I know Dan is hoping for no stat recounts this year ;)
yeesh that was a wild one! the championship was decided on a Rebound stat correction!
I know the Cavs are notoriously tight-lipped about injury timetables, but shouldn’t we have SOME idea of when Jarrett’s coming back now? Much as I love Mobley at center, it’s hard to argue we’re better off without him.
Damn Sixers. Feel like they’ve been the bane of our season… after the evil god of injuries, of course.
Per Shams from the Athletic:
Cavaliers center Jarrett Allen is hopeful of a return to the lineup within the next three weeks after suffering a fractured left finger on March 6, sources said. Allen has so far resisted surgery on the finger, which would have had a lengthy return timetable.
Yup, I’ve been consistent in saying it’s probably 4 weeks, they’ll bring him back for the last two regular season games for rhythm and then playoffs it is.
Lauri, DG, and Mobley all put up 25 point double doubles in the same game against the Nugs…I didn’t clock that. Apparently hasn’t been done in 50 years. That truly was an heroic effort considering the next closest point totals were 12 and 10.
Does Cleveland have their Big 3 put together already and I never noticed JA wasn’t one of them? That’s some dynasty level stuff…the JA injury sucks but it might have provided a stage for the best 3 players to step into the spotlight together. Love is our Iggy? JA our Bogut? and Ice is Harrison Barnes?
I’m voting for a big 4!
true. amen. why limit ourselves here.
But I agree that Lauri is looking better by the minute.
I am looking forward to, in a year or so, everyone saying “How did the Cavs get all these guys?”.
Did not know CLF was Chris Francis. Been gone awhile. Awesome cap. Hope to be around more. Cavs are amazing. Coached well, managed well, play well together. Keep it going.
Hey Dave, sorry for the switch up! Had to do it to set up a wordpress account!
Thanks for popping in and reading of course, good to see your name pop up again!
KAT sixth NBA player ever with 60 points, 15 rebounds. Check this footnote:
* Chamberlain had 60 points and 15 rebounds a total of 20 times in his NBA career.
They don’t make ’em like that anymore.
Argh, 76ers blow it against the Raps…getting tight in the middle of the PO standings.
Bulls aren’t doing too great though, lost 3, play the Raps next and then Bucks.
Yeah…we’re 3 games out of 2nd and 4 games ahead of 8th. A couple good or bad bounces and we could end up in any of the 2-8 spots. Seems likely Chicago will be easier to finish ahead of than Toronto
I haven’t looked back and checked exactly, but I think every time the Cavs had a major injury (Sexton, Rubio), the slumped for a little while, but then got back on track. Are they figuring out how to play without Allen? I hope so.
Also, I think we need Goodwin on the playoff roster.
I agree re: Goodwin.
me too
Great recap CLF! Just like everything else Cleveland, the Cavs are going to have to earn it.
THanks WCC!
Raps saying Van Vleet out tonight against Sixers with a sore knee.
Cavs remaining schedule: 11 left. 6 H, 5 A.

We are up 1.5 on Totonto for 7th and have the TB (3-0 vs Raps). Up 1 in the loss column.
Raps schedule: 12 left. 8 H, 4 A.
at Phi, at Chi (b2b), CAVS, Indy, Bos, Minny, at Orl, Mia, Atl, Philly, Hou (b2b), at NYK.
every game gonna matter!
Nice recap!
I’d add that the Pistons are more than Cade & Grant. Bey had 51 last game vs Orlando and 20/6/3/3/1 last night vs us.
Stevens is gonna have to play more with Wade out, maybe some Windler.
Thanks Jason!
“The rise of the CAVS Dynasty” — love it!
THATS RIGHT!
THANK YOU AGAIN CLF !!!—GOOD WIN AGAINST A PISTONS TEAM // WHO SEEMS TO HAVE OUR NUMBER AND WHO I THINK ARE JUST A PLAYER OR 2 AWAY FROM WHERE THE CAVS PRESENTLY ARE —-I AM ALSO GUILTY OF ‘TURNING CAVS OFF –THINKING THERE IS A BASKETBALL GENIE WHO WILL SNAP AN AUTOMATIC COMEBACK “—THIS TOTALLY ANNOYS THE MRS NOMAD—YES I LEAD A DANGEROUS LIFE ——-QUESTION // OPINIONS—I FULLY SUPPORTED// APPLAUDED THE TRADE FOR LEVERT —–I NOW HAVE SOME ‘CONCERNS ‘ IF IT WAS THE RIGHT MOVE—-I LIKE HIS ATTITUDE// ENERGY–HUSTLE—DFENSE IS SURPRISINGLY GOOD—HIS OFFENSE IS MY CONCERN —IS IT… Read more »
Every trade is a gamble. Koby had back – to – back – to back homeruns in Allen, BigFin, and RR, but it is hard to get a HR every time up. I think CL is at least a single or double. For one thing, he takes some ball handling pressure off DG, and there is the threat of going off for a 40 point game. This greatly increases the chance of winning a round or two THIS YEAR!
Not worried about his offense, worried about his defense it sucks and DG/Caris lineups could get killed in the playoffs.
But he’s certainly putting in the effort now, I think he’ll improve with reps.
I thought the Cabs scheduled didnt look that bad – at least the next 5 in my mind were all very winnable games vs teams of our caliber. I guess statistically that means we should go .500 as you said, but we could go 5-0!
You’re precisely right, it’s the next 4-5 games after that where the Cavs could lose the next four. There’s a back to back, including on 1PM on the non-back to back day. With travel.
Then the last games are against Milwaukee and Brooklyn, likely need to at least split those to clinch 6th.
Wouldn’t it be wild if coming into the last game, the Cavs and Nets are tied, and playing for, say, fifth or sixth seed?
it’s entirely possible, Go Cavs!
right. what would be better is Cavs playing for fourth seed, and Nets playing for tenth!
JFC on Wade. I thought injuries last season were bad, but it was just a warmup. JB might have to play Windler no matter how much he hates it.
That bucket/ defensive take away (GIMMIE THE BALL!) by Mobley with about a minute left were game winning plays.
