Recap: Bulls 98, Cavs 94 (or, Whac-a-Mole)
2022-03-27While the Cavs put together a masterful defensive performance, the offense decided to crap out as the Cavs lose their third straight game, this time 98-94 to the Chicago Bulls. The Cavs were playing basketball Whac-a-Mole all night with a pathetic first half performance followed by some vintage Lake Erie Show razzle dazzle in the second half. But at the end of the day, the Cavs were unable to close the deal again. Let’s dive right into tonight’s takeaways…
1. The Windler Agenda to the moon
The Windler Agenda simply can’t stop collecting W after W. Dylan Windler is tonight’s Top Dawg for completely changing the fortunes of this game with his defense and hustle. In his 11.6 minutes on the court tonight, Windler posted a team high +47.7 net rating. It was just nice to see someone have energy playing the game. It was a nice laugh to see the CtB Commentariat collectively realize how desperate Coach J.B. Bickerstaff was for a spark that he was actually willing to call Windler’s number. But what’s not funny is the fact that there is mountains of evidence at this point that Windler has earned a consistent 10 minutes a game and J.B. simply refuses to pay him that respect. What will the future hold for the Windler agenda moving forward? Who knows, but at this point it’s just second hand embarrassment to see J.B. rack his brain for some perimeter defense while Windler twiddles his thumbs on the bench for far too many occasions.
2. Lamar Stevens, runner-up for Top Dawg
The other spark off the bench tonight besides Windler was Lamar Stevens. His defense tonight was tenacious, relentless, and effective posting a +10.2 net rating in his 25.4 minutes. Credit to J.B. for using him as a small-ball power forward role, which really seem to unlock some defensive versatility on the perimeter. If Stevens can somehow find his midrange touch again, he’ll really make it hard for J.B. to keep him off the court.
3. Cedi’s in the mud
Cedi Osman is probably in the midst of the worst stretch of his career right now, tonight being no exception. He posted a -77.3 net rating in 5.9 minutes. The eye test says that is 100% accurate. There is probably no Cavalier on the roster that misses Ricky Rubio more than Cedi Osman. Just take a look at these numbers and weep:
Cedi goes from Jedi to Jar Jar Binks without Ricky Rubio. Find this man a decent point guard.
4. Evan Mobley and Isaac Okoro’s growing pains
This was probably one of the poorer defensive performances from both of these guys. Only one block and one steal from nearly 70 minutes of court time between the two players is simply unacceptable from two of the defensive stalwarts in the starting lineup. Isaac Okoro was clearly outplayed by Dylan Windler and Lamar Stevens. Mobley was a two-way trainwreck tonight, unable to find much rhythm at all. But all was not lost for the young lads. Ice’s shooting remained superb, and Mobley’s passing and rebounding were excellent tonight. So while they didn’t put their best foot forward in an important game, there were positives to build upon.
5. DG’s MVP campaign continues unabated
28 points, six rebounds, five assists, two steals, and a +5.9 net rating in 44.1 minutes. His defense was spectacular tonight, which goes to show his ability to learn from his mistake against the Raptors. He was only one of three Cavs with a positive net rating. The team needs to rally around their MVP.
6. The Cavs are in a fight now
With this loss tonight, the Cavs have lost their tiebreaker with Chicago and now stand in play-in position with only eight games left. Luckily for the Cavs, they’re easily within striking distance of fifth seed still. But with such a brutal schedule left in terms of a serious lack of off days, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Cavs fall further. This reality shouldn’t be taken negatively however, the Cavs’ season is still a smashing success and experiencing play-in/playoff pressure will pay off massive dividends for the future.
7. Quick note on the Bulls
In talking with knowledgeable Bulls’ fans, there’s a striking similarity to their experience of the Bulls’ season to Cavs’ fans and their experience. On the one hand, Bulls’ fans are pretty miffed about the injuries to Alex Caruso and Lonzo Ball. Their absences really did crater their defense and caps their playoff ceiling. That’s the second problem, Zach LaVine’s looming free agency. They could theoretically lose LaVine for nothing. Or, they could lose him for spare parts in a sign and trade. There was a lot riding on this season and right now they look like first round fodder instead of a championship contender. Will that be enough “success” to encourage LaVine to not jump ship? On the flip side, the Bulls haven’t really enjoyed any consistent success since the Derrick Rose era. Having a competitive team worth rooting for is underrated sometimes.
8. Next up, the Orlando Magic
The Magic come to town in what is an absolute must-win game that simultaneously poses as a trap game. Hopefully J.B. sees it fit to try and expand the rotation to Brandon Goodwin and/or Moses Brown, two guys who’ve made positive impacts on team success and could potentially alleviate the insane load the young core is currently carrying. Here’s to rooting for the bench dawgs, Go Cavs!
LT up
Timelord may have a torn meniscus. Going around, I guess. If he’s done for the season, that’s a massive hit for the Celts D.
yup, I saw that… it’s definitely going around. The scheduling is unsustainable without a commitment to load management.
Got to take it day by day, game by game. Like our circumstances changed with a single play, Sextons knee, Rubio knee… JAs finger, other teams fortunes can change too. Orlando tonight at home should be a win.
Celtics resting their studs against the Raps tonight since it’s the second night of a B2B. Sucks…

Not shocking but, damn damn damn. Get well Deaner.
Gutted for D Wade, he was having a great year and establishing himself as one of the better wing defenders in the NBA, get well soon King!
Losing Sexton, Rubio, and now Allen has a cumulative effect on the other guys. It wears you down.
Levert and Rondo have not helped much. And with apologies to Ed Davis, we never really had a legit #2 C.
The season has been a great step forward, but it could have been so much more. Best case #8 via the play in (I do not see us beating the Nets). Wose case, out of POs (though in the lottery).
There’s all this talk about injuries injuries, but we’ve had these injuries for months now, we should know how to play with injuries, every team has had to deal with injuries in some manner, its part of the game. I think with the team being so young, the coaching staff just can’t figure out how to get the team ready and prepared for games like this. These last two losses are on the coaches, figure out your personnel and trust the players on the team. Seems like if things don’t pan out, everyone will just yell INJURIES as an excuse… Read more »
Different part of the season. Teams are gearing up/in tight playoff races now. Every game matters which probably isn’t the case for a lot of teams early to midway thru the season. Usually competition becomes harder during the late season as compared to the early season where teams like the cavs can catch other teams by surprise. With how young they are, this is a team that when they’re healthy their whole is greater than the sum of their parts. Low margin for error when missing guys. Allen’s injury is a huge blow. So was Rubio’s. This is especially true… Read more »
gee, maybe that is because they ARE an excuse?
All of our competition except the Nets won — Bummer! (other than the Nets).
We have a decent chance of finishing 9th, and a prayer of 10th — Yikes!
I thought I picked the Cavs to finish 3ed? What happened to that?
Losing 2-3 starters will screw most teams.
good thing I never gamble.
MIKEO GREAT POINTS—AND I AGREE ABOUT WINDLER—HE HAS NEVER BEEN GIVEN ANY CONSISTENT RUN WITH THE CAVS ——CONSISTENT MEANING HE KNOWS HE WILL GET 9–12 MIN’S EVERY GAME NOT JUST 3–4 GAME STRETCHES—–RAOUL AGREE WITH YOU ON THE WATSON PRESS CONFREENCE —COULDN’T HAVE COME ACROSS ANY WORSE THAN HE DID // ENTIRE BROWNS CONTINGENT BERRY // HASLAMS LOOKED TERRIBLE
I don’t see many games, but I did catch the last quarter and a half last night. That part was fun!
DG was astounding, even though he went 1/3 on FT in the improbable last 10 seconds rally (after playing 44 of 48 mins). Windler and Stevens looked great, LeVert and Lauri looked pretty good.
Mobley unfortunately looked like a lost 12 year old, wondering what he was doing there. Not to worry, he will be a year older next year.
Yup, agreed.
That first half was about as bad a half as i’ve seen a professional basketball team play. Kudos to them for playing much better in the 2nd, but it was too late. Remember those heady Rubio days when the Cavs were jumping all over teams from the opening whistle almost every game? As far as Windler, I’m pretty much resigned that he’s going to get thrown in on some crappy trade, and we’ll have to hear announcers say stuff like “and what a story Dylan Windler is for ‘team x’, he never was able to find a role on the… Read more »
I am starting to agree about Windler. Wasn’t he supposed to be an outside shooter when he came in?
Shooter/ rebounder. He’s only been league average from three for his career (34-35%), but he’s literally never had any kind of consistent playing time, and he sure as hell doesn’t get many great looks.
I wish this team had someone like Terry Stotts designing the offense.
to be fair to JB, this year’s probably the first year we can say he’s been available to get minutes. Windler’s injuries were pretty extensive before that.
CAM YOUNG IS A 6″6″ PT GD FOR THE CHARGE AVG 25+ PPG——THINK HE COULD POSSIBLY GIVE DG A 3-4 MINUTE BLOW ??
Sure why not? Make the move Koby!
THINK THE WAY THE RAPTORS ARE PLAYING AND THE CAVS AREN’T—AND BARNES PUTTING UP SOME GOOD STATS —HE HAS PASSED AND WILL WIN ROY OVER MOBES
Yup, I think ROY is 50/50, and trending in Barnes’ favor.
THANK YOU CLF —YOU ARE THE MAN!!!—–DIDN’T WATCH GAME AT ALL—LOOKED AT BOX SCORE AND READ CTB POSTS ——-PROBABLY WILL GET ‘ CHASTIZED ‘ FOR POSTING THIS AT THIS STAGE OF THE SEASON// WAY WE ARE PLAYING I AM PERFECTLY CONTENT TO GO ‘STEALTH TANK” KEEP OUR PACERS DRAFT PICK // HAVE THE PLAY IN GAME FOR A LITTLE EXPERIENCE —MOST OF ALL FOR GODS SAKE CURTAIL DG’S MINUTES TO PREVENT ANY SERIOUS INJURY—-GOODWIN// MOBES// LEVERT FOR SPOT PT GD DUTY
haha — since it is looking like that will happen, I am in on it too!
I usually try to look for the silver lining in what ever happens, e.g., even with Browns and the Watson trade. until his press conference. what an unlikable idiot.
Appreciate it NOMAD! Yeah, I’m happy either way, but ultimately prefer winning! LMFAOOO or at least maximizing minutes for young players if we’re not winning.
