Podcast 271 (or, Fortnite: NBA Playoff Edition)
2022-05-17Nate Smith and the Chrises Mr. Lyden and Mr. Francis hopped into the Cavs: the Podcast studio resort to take the temperature of the NBA playoffs so far, the impending draft lottery, and the latest in Cavsworld.
On the foremost of Mr. Francis’ mind was the upcoming draft and how the Cavs’ might approach it. Secondly, the trio dives into the Conference semis, with particular attention from Mr. Smith to the spectacular collapse of the Phoenix Suns and the cooler talk aftermath. The guys riff on the very contemporary subject of video games, which are ubiquitous in the world of Gen Z or “Zoomer” generation. Mr. Lyden takes the guys and audience down the fascinating rabbit hole of DeAndre Ayton’s video gaming habits.
The trio quickly covers the disturbing reports regarding Rajon Rondo, while ending on a high note by talking next steps in the development of the Cavs. Of course, no Cavs: the Podcast is complete without some pitches, and there are some delightful ones if you’re a fan of music and TV.

new post up!
GS over BOS in 5 (but maybe 4).. over MIA in 4 (if a miracle happens).. even being up 2-1 after tonight i just don’t see MIA beating BOS..either way, just remember koby could have picked poole, but was too stupid to do so.. choosing windy the toothpick instead.. and this is not the last GS championship before the splash retires.. maybe 2 or 3 more..
remind us who you suggested the Cavs pick that year.
way beyond my paygrade raoul bro.. but i was on the mobley wagon early.. most years i just wait to throw tomatoes at the great pretenders in the nba FOs.. easy pickings there.. it’s not just poole vs windy.. also maxey vs okoro.. but picking winning talent is a very tough game, which is why only a few organizations really excel at it..the cavs are in good company.. mediocre at best.. GS is a smart organization, but they needed many other teams to be unbelievably dumb to be able to succeed as they did.. it’s a funny thing
My point is that I don’t recall anyone on CtB championing Poole at the time of the draft
i guess GS is smarter than CtB..and way smarter than koby and his munchkins
Looks like the Heat will win with no Butler the entire second half and an absolutely disgraceful display by these refs.
Unbelievable the home cooking the refs have given the Celtics tonight. It’s not just the huge FT disparity — they’ve been letting contact by Celtic players go all game.
God, Herro is stinking it up. He’ll probably have a game where he hits shots, but he plays with the defensive force of a kitten. If he’s not hitting shots, he’s just a complete waste.
SORRY CLF—LOOKS LIKE EASON HAD AN IMPRESSIVE SHOWING AT THE COMBINE —HAVING HIM MOVING UP AS FAR AS THE 10TH PICK// WIZARDS —WON’T BE THERE FOR THE CAVS—-DANIESL ALSO WILL BE GONE BY THEN —-DAVIS MAY FALL AS FAR AS THE 14TH ——-IF HE IS STILL THERE DIENG MIGHT BE WORTH THE ‘ CRAP ‘ SHOT
Yup, he’s moving up but still only #15 on the consensus board, so keep the faith NOMAD!!!!
Daniels will be long gone, Davis may fall and I wouldn’t mind taking him. I’d rather have Davis over Sochan in fact.
I’d be pretty happy with Davis. If he’s there when the Cavs pick, they should take him.
Yeah, it would be almost impossible to fault the Cavs for taking him if he’s there at 14.
In other news, Mobley got votes for all-defensive team, 5th in forwards for the lead with 13 2nd team points..the beginning of a great career.

Mavs discipline gone missing. 2 players fighting for O-reb, they get it but have noone to pass to. The other three had already left to get back on D.
Fun half.

Bray is such a clown. If the refs treated him like they treat Boogie, he would barely have a career. I’ll never understand why they take all of his nonsense.
well if Bray was drafted on a lottery team with nowhere to go he’d be Cousins and possibly out of the league due to his antics…getting on the Warriors saved him from the start and gave him benefit of the doubt.
Refballing for the Dubs now.
And their fans are talking about how *they’re* the ones getting jobbed. Same old Dubs fans.
Kerr on the record a few years back saying he was sick of Dray’s schtick. Can’t imagine how over it he is now.
Mavs holding their lead while Luka sits is huge. A confident and aggressive Brunson makes all the difference.
Mavs have watched 2016 finals as prep for this game. I do love seeing GSW on the receiving end of a moving screen!!
Rondo:
https://cavaliersnation.com/2022/05/18/report-cavs-member-partially-blames-rondo-why-garland-was-drained-by-end-season/
This article is garbage. Basically blaming Rondo for being old.
yeah agreed, like it’s Koby’s fault for counting on a 36 year old guard for 20mpg LMFAOOO
and it’s cowardly and a distraction to put it out there and not put your name on it.
Bray, as always, is a jackass.
Brunson has to force his way into the paint against Curry and tire him out. Settling for the outside shot is a bad plan.
Defending Doncic with Wiggins…lol…
YEAH MIKE I HAVE MENTIONED THAT ALSO ABOUT DIENG—-HE IS A GM “TEASER ” DAMNED IF YOU DO….DAMNED IF YOU DON’T—–HAVE REALLY GROWN ON EASON —BUT JUST LOOKING AT HIS MEASUREMENTS TODAY—-WOW—–THINK HE WILL BE GAINING MOMENTUM GOING INTO DRAFT AND WILL BE GONE BY THE CAVS PICK——WHICH IF IS THE CASE—I WOULD TAKE A FLYER ON DIENG—-HIS AGE// HEIGHT// FLUIDITY// PASSING—BALLHANDLING SKILLS ARE VERY INTICING—-READ SOMEWHERE IN HIS LAST 10 GAMES HIS 3 PT SHOOTING WAS AROUND 40% ALSO ——-HAVE MENTIONED ALSO THIS LEAONARD MILLER IS REALLY GAING NOTICE —HE COULD POSSIBLY BE A BETTER PICK THAN DIENG
Tankathon’s mock today has Cavs taking Ousmane Dieng (and if you check tomorrow, it’ll probably be someone else), and definitely intrigued by that dude. I know Eli is very interested in him. Really improved the second half of the year, and exactly the sort of lengthy wing player the Cavs need. Good defender, can initiate PnR, 3 ball not there yet, but it looks good off the bounce.
At where they’re picking, this dude and Jovic should be getting hard looks.
IT HAS BEEN MENTIONED NUMEROUS TIMES THE ‘EVENTUAL ” COMPARISON OF ICE TO BUTLER —IT WOULD BE SOOOOOOO NICE// COOL IF ICE WOULD EVEN COME REMOTELY CLOSE TO THOSE COMPARISONS// PREDICTINS —ESPECIALLY ON OFFENSE
Never really saw that comp offensively…the idea seems to be “well, Jimmy was super raw on that end when he was 19, so Okoro = Jimmy”. A lot of guys are super raw offensively when they’re 19, and never eventually become a Jimmy Butler.
Okoro may become a more skilled offensive player down the line, but I’m not banking on some .00000001% outcome.
Yeah, the main difference is that Butler actually is a playmaker on both ends of the court. Ice does not make those plays yet, and it’s increasingly unlikely on the current trajectory.
Right. If Ice does not take a big step this summer, his trajectory will be worrisome indeed.
Yeah, the Butler/Kawhi leap on offense does not happen very often.
Butler schooled these douches.
Jimmy Buckets indeed.
I most want to see Dallas in the finals, but the prospect of Butler destroying a team that has Wiggins on it is delicious too.
Grant Williams is such an egregious flopper. Falls right in with this trash team.
Gonna jump out a window if I have to hear this same exact discussion about how that’s not a flagrant foul for the 1000th time between these two dinks.
Was there a 30 point swing at the end of the third, or did I misread the mid third score?
Pretty much…I think the Heat had a 20-2 run…
I blinked and missed it….
Actually 22-2…
Jimmy absolutely eating at the FT line. Enjoyable.
Pains me to say……Boston look really good.
Hitting a crapload of tough jumpers…let’s see what happens when they aren’t…
MAYBE IT IS JUST ME AND MY …… ” MORE BEER PLEASE ” BUT IT APPEARS THERE IS A SLIGHT “PAUSE –GATHER ” IN HIS ( ROLLINS ) SHOT —–THAT LITTLE PAUSE IS HUGE IN THE NBA ALLOWING A DEFENDER TO CLOSE OUT ON YOU
HOPEFULLY NOT AS THE 14TH PICK—–IF EASON/ SOCHAM/ AGBAJI / DANIELS ARE GONE BY THE TIME CAVS PICK—LOOKING AT BRANAHAM// BROWN // WASHINTON OR DIENG ——–THIS LEONARD MILLER ( PREP FROM CANADA ) IS PICKING UP ALOT OF STEAM AS OF LATE
Called it, Ryan Rollins on the Cavs’ watch list: https://twitter.com/ChrisFedor/status/1526674245711020035?s=20&t=zT8c4-_GyuEt8B2HdhDmug
So, was that chalk? I cannot remember the last time no one moved up or down, but I am sure it has happened.
I gotta think Agbaji, Eason, Sochan, Davis, Branham, Mathurin, Dieng, & Jovic is our wheelhouse.
Kings moved up, Blazers down.
No chance on Mathurin, he’s going top 10, wouldn’t be surprised if a team took him top 5
Magic get the top pick, and they’ll probably botch it.
I feel like they will take Chet. Not saying it’s good or bad, but I bet that’s who they take.
Hope the Kings get the top pick at this point. Of course, they’ll probably completely botch it.
Bagley instead of Luka was hilarious.
Oh man. Forgot that.
A gift from them gods, and Vlade flushed it down the crapper. Felt terrible for their fans, who overwhelmingly wanted Luka. They just had to helplessly watch Vlade set their franchise back 20 years.
One of those envelopes definitely looked frozen…
Kendrick Perkins is a true mystery. It was a mystery why he was in the league so long, and why he continued to get so many minutes his last few years, and it’s a mystery why he’s paid to be a commentator by ESPN. Mysterious.
I’m absolutely expecting Cavs to pick 14, and there will be a player at that spot who can be a player…just have to pick the right guy, but if they move up it will be sheer hilarity.
Feels inevitable with this franchise’s bonkers luck in the lottery something crazy happens. It won’t but who would be that shocked if it did.
I’d rather draft 14 than have to take a guy named Chet Holgrem. Paulo Banchero on the other hand.
Disagree. You have tons of options.
1) Take Smith.
2) Take Ivey.
3) Trade back.
4) Package a top 4 pick with Sexton/LeVert plus other stuff to try and get an established player.
I’m just messing on his name. Lol. I’m dumb.
I think you guys have the wrong take on the Bucks.
Their OFFENSE was the bigger problem. They scored 81 points. Sans Middleton, they were screwed. Portis was also terrible. Bud tried to go with Portis/Giannis, but the offense tanked.
They should have been posting him up on offense. They ran 1 post up all game.
The fact they took it to 7 was lucky.
I said as much about Middleton down the line, but Lopez was such a disaster.
He played a good first half. 11 pts, 3 blocks.
But if you are not gonna feed him post touches, you are wasting him.
Big 3 only works if they compliment each other well.
Gordon is the Dawg in Denver.
Gordon is routinely terrible.
I tend to take a more ready made guy than a project/raw guy. I want help soon.
Defense has always been the formula. GSW (Green, Klay) played great D. The Bucks played great D. The LeBron teams were good on D. Spurs (Duncan/Kawhi/Admiral). Bulls. Bad Boy Pistons. Even the Showtime Lakers.
BPA is nearly always stupid. This ain’t football, and the cupboard ain’t bare. Even more so at 14.
We should NOT be taking a PF or a PG unless you think they are Duncan/Curry level. Probably not a C, either. So, best prospect at wing at 14.
The equation changes if we get lucky and are sitting 1-4. But the top 4 guys are bigs and a ball dominant PG. Just what we do not need. Though Smith would certainly work.
30 seconds in, Nate is already talking crazy. 3-4 would be WAAAAAYYY better than 14.
Not that there won’t be options at 14, there will be. But lordy, if we are sitting 3rd or 4th, we can trade back OR package that pick in a trade.
There are advantages to 14. You don’t get as tied into group think about prospects. You also pay a lower salary and aren’t as tied to overplaying a player who isn’t producing.
Rondo can eff off. He was not coming back anyway.
Generally, we need dawgs & shooting.
Specifically, we need wings, a backup PG, a backup true center, and a 3rd PG.
won’t miss Rondo in the least.
