Summer League Recap: Hornets 91, Cavs 80

Summer League Recap: Hornets 91, Cavs 80

2022-07-14 Off By Chris Francis

The Cavs put in their second straight poor performance losing by 11 to the Hornets, 91-80. The Cavs played horrible defense and shot the ball poorly, although it’s fair to say there was better ball movement on offense tonight, with 18 assists on seven turnovers. Let’s dive in…

1. Game MVP: Ochai Agbaji

The rookie really put together a complete performance with 24 points on 4-8 shooting from three, and three steals on defense. There was a palpable feeling that he was the most talented Cav on the court for the game. Yes, he has his limitations off the dribble and in the paint. But he’s extremely smart, athletic as hell, super confident with a deadly jumper.

2. Isaiah Mobley rough shooting night

Mobley was able to impact the game in a variety of ways: 11 rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. But he was a total non threat to score, going 3-13 from the field. Hopefully he finds his scoring rhythm before the Cavs break for the rest of summer.

3. The Cavs lack top end talent

The Cavs lack of young talent on this year’s Summer League squad is really showing in the last two games. There’s no Paolo Banchero, Keegan Murray, Jaden Ivey, or Tari Eason etc., etc. to carry a squad for the Cavs. This is not disrespect, it’s just the reality of the situation. Summer League is meant to get rookies adjusted to NBA speed and as a try out for end of bench roster spots, it’s not to really win even though they will be handing out rings for the knockout tournament at the end of the week. Agbaji looked great and that’s really the only takeaway necessary for tonight’s game.

4. Canton’s Own CJ McCollum on the call

5. Next up, Detroit

The Cavs will play a second game of a back to back (really Adam Silver???) tomorrow against the Detroit Pistons. The game will be nationally televised on NBA TV at 5:30PM Eastern Time, GO CAVS!
