Recap: Cavs 105, Raptors 108 (or, A Grotesque Display of Refereeing)
2022-10-20The Cavs took a haymaker (actually had their eyes clawed out SMFH) from the Toronto Raptors as they lose a high intensity one-sided brawl 105-108. Why one-sided? Because the NBA referees put their thumb on the scales gifting the Raptors with carte blanche to mug every Cav with impunity. Yours truly quite literally never mentions the refs as a standing policy, but they’ve forced yours truly’s hand since they wanted to insert themselves into the game… let’s dive in!
1. Darius Garland a victim of the Raptors’ dirty play
Apparently DG took a finger to the eye from Gary Trent Jr.’s trash defense, and ended up with a lacerated eye lid and is unable to see since it’s swollen shut. Even more outrageous, there was no foul called on the play. (REFS YOU SUCK!) Why characterize the play as dirty? Because Toronto’s game plan on defense was simply to take cheap shots to try and intimidate the Cavs into quitting and dare the refs to call them on their bullshit. Fred VanVleet nearly rolled up Donovan Mitchell’s ankle/knee on a layup, thankfully Mitchell was OK from the fall. Here’s the latest from Chris Fedor on DG:
#Cavs Darius Garland had additional examination at the Cleveland Clinic Cole Eye Institute today that revealed no structural damage and surgery was not required for his left eye injury suffered last night. He will be re-evaluated over the next couple of days.

2. The Donovan Mitchell MVP agenda begins
The debut couldn’t have gone much better for Donovan Mitchell, who put on an MVP level performance with 31 points, nine assists, and a couple of steals to go along with a team high plus/minus of +10 in a three point loss. The Cavs would’ve had no chance without him, especially in the absence of DG. He and Caris LeVert really settled the game down for the Cavs in the backcourt with their veteran poise. It was great to see Mitchell get comfortable immediately with the team, now the team has to figure out how to support Mitchell’s offensive arsenal.
3. Bench MVP: Cedi “The Jedi” Osman
Probably the most overlooked/forgotten player on the roster this offseason was Cedi “the Jedi” Osman. He had an up and down season last year that coincided with the injury to Ricky Rubio, and basically was talked about as salary filler in discussions about how to upgrade the roster. What Cedi actually did this offseason was ball out in Eurobasket 2022, and now he’s hit this season running with stellar performance off the bench with 17 points, three rebounds, and a bench high +7. The Cavs posted a stellar +14.9 net rating in his 28 minutes on the court, which was the team high narrowly beating out DMitch. If he’s able to replicate these types of performances with any kind of consistency, he could go from regular season body to the highly sought-after “16 game player.”
4. Expectations weigh heavily on the young guys
As you can see from the table, the young guys clearly had trouble finding their offensive rhythm in the game, with Evan Mobley, Dean Wade, and Darius Garland posting three out of the four worst net ratings on the night. It should be unsurprising that the young guys come out of the gate a bit tight. This was the first time in their careers they played under the weight of playoff expectations. Hopefully they understand that they can rely on guys such as Mitchell, LeVert, and NBA Champion Kevin Love to navigate their way through the season. I expect them to look completely different by game 20.
5. Sneaky stat of the night
The Cavs’ rebounding woes have continued on the defensive end, giving up 12 offensive rebounds and losing the rebounding battle 41-38. It’s truly a collective failure to hustle and compete for the ball after a missed shot, which is inexcusable. Because of their lack of efforts on the defensive boards, they weren’t able to capitalize on some excellent on-ball defense that they played.
6. Quick note on the Raptors
Credit where it’s due, the starting lineup for the Raptors is solid. Their bench leaves a lot to be desired, especially in terms of offensive playmaking but it seems like their rookie draft pick Christian Koloko out of Arizona seems to be a ready-made NBA player. But they play ball like trash and should be banished from the NBA forever (parody, satire, I guess…)
7. Next up, the Windy City
The Cavs will lake hop to shores of the Great Lake Michigan to square off against the Chicago Bulls in a Central Division showdown on Saturday night. Tip off is scheduled for 8:00PM Eastern time. Until then, Go Cavs!
lt up
Woulda been nice to keep Lauri. OK, I’m over it (not really) but I’ll try to make this my last post about it!
Looked good in international ball. Maybe he’ll finally put it together and be the guy the Bulls thought they were drafting. Seems more likely he’ll be the guy he’s been, though…decent player who has his moments, but one dimensional and too inconsistent.
GREAT POINT BUCKAROO—-DOG FIGHT IN THE EAST/// THERE ARE NO GIMMEE’S —UNLESS A TEAM GOES IN “TANK ” MODE —-ANOTHER REASON WHY EACH LOSS IS VITAL// EVEN THE EARLY ONES// WHY HAVING DG OUT SUCKS !!!——LAURI WITH 24//13 LAST NIGHT// GOOD FOR HIM —–MAN WISH WE COULD HAVE SOMEHOW KEPT HIM

Trent Jr. did it again. Slapped a Nets player in the eye.

Expected. Hope it’s just one game. I would expect Okoro to start…I expected him to play a lot, anyway, since I don’t see anyone else making Derozan work.
methinks it’s going to be an absolute dogfight in the east.. no, that doesn’t quite describe the coming season.. it is going to be trench warfare.. re the somme.. just brutal.. the disparity in talent is really not that great amongst the “good” teams in the east, and even the lesser rans are not pathetic.. and looking at the west, it is not going to be as brutal, but still a very competitive landscape..
REBOUNDING IS AN “AQUIRED ” SKILL —-PRACTICE AT—–ANTICIPATION—-BOXING OUT — ‘GOING TO -FOR ” THE BALL –DO NOT ” BALL WATCH ” ——–JERRY LUCAS —WHO WAS NO WHERE NEAR BEING AN ATHLETIC PLAYER PROBABLY AVG 15 REB’S FOR HIS ENTIRE CAREER—–READ ONCE WHERE HE USED TO HAVE SOMEONE SHOOT FROM ALL OVER THE COURT TO SEE WHERE A MISSED SHOT WOULD NORMALLY GO— THAT INCREASED HIS ANTICIPATION OF WHERE TO GO ON MISSED SHOTS —-I HAD A DRILL THAT SIMULATED THIS // WE PRACTICED IT DAILY // WE WERE SELDOM OUT REBOUNDED OR LOST THE 50-50 “LOOSE ‘ BALL BATTLE… Read more »
PREACH IT NOMAD!!! Competitiveness/hustle is absolutely a skill, all the champions have it!
Great point, Nomad! Rodman did that too and Bird. Gotta put in the time!
P.s. as a kid, I heard Lucas talk… he said he also ran down any stray balls at the end of quarters – it was worth 1-2 extra boards a night (plus an excuse to talk to fans).
I recall reading as a kid, possibly from JL, that 70% of rebounds go away from the side of the shooter, 20% go back toward the shooter, and 10% bounce to the front.
Nice cap, Chris. Thought this stretch was really brutal. Also think a lot of rebounding woes were not enough Kevin love and too much zone.

hell yeah nice clip!
DIDN’T WATCH THE GAME —RELIED ON POSTS// CLF’S RECAP—–THANK YOU CLF !!!——–SOUNDS AS IF 2 “NEMISIS ‘ FROM LAST SEASON STILL PERSIST—–REBOUNDING AND HOPEFULLY ( ISOLATED CASE ) INJURIES —-I BELIEVE IN AGGRESSIVE DEFENSE BUT NOT ‘MUGGING ” –NBA HAS TO SET THE STANDARDS —-YEP TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU BUCKAROO —HUMOR IS GREAT IN THE MORNING // WHICH IGET A DAILY DOSE JUST BY WAKING AND LOOKING IN THE MIRROR :-)
westbrook.. 27 min.. 2 pts.. 0-6 on 3s.. i love humor in the morning..
LeBron’s skill at being a GM has gone from bad to worse. Makes MJ look like a genius!
0-11 overall. 5 steals and some decent D on Kawhi late. But he is worth Dean Wade money, not $47 mil.
Bron is done with winning titles, and he knows it. He is content to break Kareem’s record in LA, which he thinks makes him the GOAT (it don’t), and then play with Bronny.
Meanwhile, Steph & Giannis will win more titles.
Don’t know about Giannis. Steph’s team was cooked over many years outside of the Durant period. The core has been together forever. I would only hope the Cavs can pull off the same feat. And I agree Bron is done as the leader of a title team. He’ll have to ride coattails to get another.
If the Raps play that way the entire season, they’re going to have a handful of brawls/suspensions to deal with. This isn’t hockey you damn hooligans!
LMFAO that’s right!!!
It seems apparent that DG/DM will take time to gel. Both had 4 points at the time of DGs exit.
yup, it’s gonna take awhile.
Despite the outcome, it was a well fought game that was exciting to watch. And thats pretty much all I ask for any more. We’ll win some of these and lose some of these
Not a bad place to start.
yes sir love it TOJ!
Sigh of relief that DG is not hurt long term.
Good cap.
Toughness/rebounding is a bit of a bugaboo for us. Defensive glass.
Harden ball hoggin’ in clutch time costs Philly as the Bucks beat them without Middleton despite Jrue going 2 for 15.
Thanks Jason Philly fans are in full meltdown mode over Embiid LMFAOO
Great recap CLF. Agreed, the refs completely dominated the game deep throating their whistles while the Raptors beat the crap out of the Cavs. I’m so done with Toronto. A level of hate I have reserved for the warriors in the past.
Thanks WCC as always! It was shitty basketball to watch, bet the Cavs got a bottom tier crew.
Didn’t even mind Toronto until what I saw last night, shit was bush league.
Get well soon DG.
That’s right <3
