Instant Reaction: Cavs Select Jaylon Tyson
2024-06-27Good morning CtB!
Last night the Cavs selected 21 year old California Golden Bear Jaylon Tyson with the 20th pick of the 2024 NBA Draft. By selecting Tyson, the Cavs have created more competition at the shooting guard/small forward spot with Max Strus, Sam Merrill, Caris LeVert, and potentially also Isaac Okoro. As one who was concerned POBO Koby Altman wouldn’t draft a shooter, my instant reaction is that this is a B+/A- pick, to my pleasant surprise. Tyson was a name yours truly mentioned at least twice on the podcast, and was hoping he’d be selected over types such as Johnny Furphy, Tristan Da Silva, Kyshawn George, or Ryan Dunn.
Looking at Tyson’s statistical profile, it’s clear he’ll rebound, defend, pass a little and shoot a little with a scoring efficiency that projects to be at least average. He’s not an elite athlete by any measure, but he does have legitimate NBA athleticism. Looking at his tape, the two things that stand out are his ball-handling is very clean with the ability to create his own looks, as well as his very pure jumper off the dribble or catch and shoot.
What could the Cavs have done differently? The biggest thing would’ve been taking a shot at falling guard Isaiah Collier of USC. He was the number one recruit in the nation coming out of high school, and had a productive time at USC in spite of a weak roster. But, he doesn’t necessarily solve the size and shooting equation. The other options were Tyler Smith of G-League Ignite and Kyle Filipowski of Duke. Both players fill a need, but aren’t as skilled offensively as Tyson is. This tweet sums it up best:
Some stats to ponder with Jaylon Tyson, from when he was in an off ball role at Texas Tech.
•97th percentile: cutting efficiency
•90th percentile: C&S efficiency
•94th percentile: transition
•88th percentile: at the rim— Fear the 'Fro: A Cleveland Cavs Podcast (@FeartheFroPod) June 27, 2024
What say you, Commentariat? Love it? Hate it? Sound off below! And there are rumors the Cavs will trying to get back into the second, could they solve their 3/4 dilemma then? Stay tuned….

An upgrade on Harris for sure. Wonder if it means no PG
RUMOR s—-JB/ PISTON s LOOKING TO PURSUE ICE ———THOUGHT s /OPINIONS
We have depth at that position. I’m okay with it. I would miss his defense but he’s offensively challenged, especially in the playoffs.
I’d trade him for Isaiah Stewart in a heartbeat.
Beef Stew (Disco Stu’s second cousin).
I value Ice more than LeVert or Strus. Though depending on what we have to pay him, that could change. At half their salary, it is any easy choice to make.
Ingram to Kings getting traction?
If PG goes to Philly a lot of good players shake loose (RoCo, Buddy, Shake, Harris)
Bullock going to UFA
Bummer Len stayed in Sacto.
Thomas Bryant might be good
HOPING THE INJURES INFLUENCED BOTH DG. / MOBES LAST YEAR…. AND ALSO A NEW COACH/ SYSTEM BENEFITS BOTH OF THEM—— WE SHOULD HAVE THE ANSWER BY MID JANUARY
Weird world where some are excited about no chance NBA guys like Burns and detritus like Kevin Love but not our actual good players
does garland have the integrity, maturity and professionalism to adapt to the reality of the situation (which is not horrible.. playing on a team with aspirations) if the cavs choose not trade him (because his maxy contract is off-putting to many would-be buyers).. or will he just be a check-casher ? lastly, mobley was a disappointment last year (given his anointed status).. no 3rd year lift-off.. is tghe 4th year a charm, or is that when reality sinks in (he will just be a middling pro) ? sadly, to date, he has given few if any signs that he can… Read more »
LeBron setting new standard in how much you can squeeze out of a team
JB in Detroit makes sense
yeah. JB is probably the right coach for team starting a rebuild, or stuck in bottomfeederland
We also extended a QO to Bates. Let me take another swing at the roster, this time remembering Gorgeous Georges.
12 spots taken:
PG: Garland, Porter
Combo Guard: Mitchell, Jerome
SG: Merrill
SG/SF: Strus, LeVert, Tyson
F: Wade, Niang
PF/C: E Mobley
C: Allen
Free Agents:
SG/SF: Okoro (RFA), Bates (RFA)
F: Morris, Nance (2W)
PF/C: I. Mobley (2W)
C: TT, Jones
Mark your calendars: 9 pm, Thursday July 18. Cavs vs Lakers (Summer League), Bronny vs Burns! 🔥
awright! the B on B showdown!
Kevin Love just opted out. Might be worth a call?
https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/40458324/sources-heat-kevin-love-decline-4m-player-option
Declined $4 million option.
hell yeah!
absolutely..
Declined a 4m option for 2/8m reup: weird
we all love Kev, but sometimes he ain’t right
He was unplayable in the playoffs last year…even for Spo.
I am excited for dj burns. Love a Randolph/Udonis Haslem situation.
Agreed. I think he could be a steal.
Cavs give Okoro a qualifying offer. Probably want to see him with a new coach.
I know he did not shoot well in the POs. But he is still our best defender on PGs and SGs, and smaller SFs. And 39% on triples in the regular season was a level up.
I think it is a good move. Like sime other guys, he now has to prove he can do it come PO time.
AGREE—- NOT GOING TO “ GIVE AWAY “ DG —— WHAT THE HAWKS DID WITH MURRAY—— LAKERS FANS TORCHING THE GM FOR NOT PURSUING MURRAY AT THAT ASKING PRICE——— RUMORS OUT THERE CAVS HAVE INTEREST IN INGRAM —— FA / TRADE MADNESS JUST STARTING TO HEAT UP
Garland not going anywhere if market for DJM is two FRPs a failed-ish lotto guy and an innings eater like LNJ
Need to boost his value anyways.
If Quickley is 35m a year, DG deal is basically market
looks like pelicans got their guard (murray) from ATL.. so, NO likely out of the market for maxy garland.. who’s left that has something cavs actually need ? san antonio ?
RAOUL —- YES i HAVE HAD PLAYERS WHO DIDN T MAKE JR HIGH / JV TEAMs THAT BECAME ALL LEAGUE BY THE TIME THEY GRADUATE ——- PHYSICALLY MATURED——- HAVE ALWAYS SAID. “ YOUR ATTITUDE WILL DETERMINE YOUR ALTITUDE “ 👍👍🏀🏀
So, 4 spots open.
PG: DG, Porter
Combo guard: Mitchell, Jerome
SG: Merrill
SG/SF: Strus, LeVert, Tyson, Bates (2W)
Forward: Wade, Nance (2W)
PF/C: Mobley, I. Mobley (2W)
C: Allen
I’d say bring back Ice & then go all frontcourt. Another combo forward and a backup C are a must.
Need to move Ice/LeVert for a bigger SF. Way too many small SF.
I think Tyson’s profile mist closely matches LeVert’s. But he isn’t ready yet.Tye 6’8-6’10” versatile combo forward is the rarest guy in the league. We don’t have any except for Wade & Niang.
I forgot Niang.
AGREE MIKE O ——— BURNS IS A LONG SHOT TO HAVE A NBA CAREER——- BUT YOU NEVER KNOW
right. as a coach, you have probably had some pleasant surprises
Alex Ducas signs with OKC. Pumped for him – Western Australia is a fairly remote place, and he is from one of the most remote cities here (Geraldton). What a great story.
MEDIA SAYING BURN s HAS LOST 40lbs SINCE TOURNEY —— 6’9” —— 235—240 lb WING WHO CAN “ PUNISH “‘. YOU——- I CAN LIKE THAT
I don’t see him as an NBA player, regardless of his weight. Good basketball player, not NBA level.
But I could be wrong, we’ll see.
Yeah I agree. He’s a pretty classic tweener
They clearly need someone who can “punish.”
NEXT STEP SIGN SPIDA —— THEN FREE AGENCY
ESPN GAVE CAVS —-A- FOR THE TYSON PICK——“NOT ULTRA GOOD IN ANY 1 SKILl—— BUT DOES EVERYTHING WELL “
Jarrett Allen for president
not a bad idea if he can take the NBA season off!
https://hoopswire.com/cleveland-cavaliers-cavs-brooklyn-nets-cameron-johnson-nba-trade-rumors-news/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=facebook
Trade Garland for Johnson and one other player. I think Garland is a net negative player on this team as it’s constructed, so getting 2 role players (one being a very good RP like Johnson) would benefit the team. I know that others probably rate Garland higher – I’m as negative you can get on him.
I LIKE THE BURNS PICK UP —— BRING ON SUMMER LEAGUE 👍🏀
NOMAD bro.. that bro is a big boy.. looks like he can control some paint against the likes of jocic and embiid..
DJ Burns will make Niang look thin!
Excited to cheer for him in Summer League.
Apparently Burns lost a lot of weight too
Another year where we aggressively do nothing to move into round 2. Shocked I is
..
I kind of like this pickup.
Although he’s not technically on the roster.
Best 2nd Rounders: Ginobili (57), Mark Price (25), Joker (41), Dray (37), Boozer (35), who else?
Brunson might wind up #2 on that list
Draymond Green was a 2nd rounder.
Tony Parker?
Oops. Nate said it already.
I’m low on Tony and Manu
Manu the greatest sixth man since Walton. Maybe greatest sixth man of all time.
Seems like a problem when comparing him to dudes that start.
Walton was a sixth man for…two seasons?
I forgot Brunson. That one was baffling to me at the time. I didn’t think he’d be a star but I definitely thought he’d be in the league for 12 years.
LET s SEE IF KOBY CAN PULL A “ RABBIT 🐇 OUT OF HIS HAT ON DAY 2 —— CPJ / EMONI / ELDER/ WADE —— I HAVE CONFDENCE HE WILL FIND A HIDDEN TALENT——- FORGET HIS NAME FROM UNC – ASHEVILLE—- 6’11” STUD —— CAN SHOOT THE 3 —-AROUND 38% —— THINK AT 1 TIME LAST SEASON HE MADE IN 3 GAME STRETCH 29/ 32 FREE THROW s —- SON WHO IS A FIREFIGHTER IN ASHEVILLE WAS SENDING ME INFO ON HIM —- SAW HIM PLAY SEVERAL TIMES—- HE WAS IMPRESSED
This might be wishful thinking on my part, but if DG gets traded (awesome guy, but not a fit on this team), then Tyson’s role becomes a lot more clear. You open up the 2 spot for all of our tweener-ish wings to slot in. Also, Tyson appears to potentially be a 2-way player, unlike Merrill and Okoro.
I like the pick, FO did the best they could.
Here’s a fun exercise: go back 8-10 years and look at the players taken in the top 20, and then the next 30. Compare who “made it” and who didn’t. Draft is a total crapshoot, but what follows is far from it.
I don’t wanna mention the 2013 draft (crosses thyself), but Giannis went in the mid-teens. Gobert in the late 20s. The following year, Jokic in the mid-20s for chrissakes. EDIT – woops, just looked it up and Jokic went at 41.
Joker, Stockton, and Price probably the three best draft picks ever.
Draymond over Price (who was like 25th overall to Drays 35).
Mark Price? Draymond is not in the same conversation.
Mark Price had six good seasons here. Draymond has been better for longer, won more, and was drafted later. There are arguments for offense over defensive production etc but Draymonds longevity and success are way more than Prices
Price is probably an all time Cav but he has as many good seasons as Dray has finals appearances. Price is a really good player but Draymond changed the game
I hate Draymond but he has a legit argument for top 3 second round pick ever
Draymond would be a nobody if he hadn’t lucked into playing with Curry and Klay. Probably would have been kicked out of the league for thuggery if he hadn’t been on a glamor team that won a lot of championships.
He’s the best defender at his size (six-five) maybe ever. Great playmaker too. F for conduct: and as for the luck, Curry and Klay benefitted from him too.
But every second round pick success has luck. Cavs might have kept Kevin Johnson, Boozer played with Bron, Manu with SAS
Although I loved LNS, I would have kept Johnson. That would have been two small guards, but they would have been unstoppable.
If they had a decent guard to go with Z, Booz, and Bron, the Cavs would have been a contender from year 1. then Boozer snuck out. POS.
all big guys
Yep. Had it not been so late I’d have given more examples.
Seems OK-ish and has some ability to create.
But another 6’5″ to 6’6″ wing is hard for me to swallow. Our size issue and roster imbalance issues remain.
Small guards: Garland, Mitchell, Jerome, Porter
2/3 Wings: Strus, Levert, (Okoro), Merrill, Tyson
Forwards: Wade
Bigs: Allen, Mobley
If Altman cannot see the issue here, he needs to go. This is like year 3 with this issue.
right. if he wasn’t an idiot, he would have drafted an 8 footer
Yeah, take the best player: and he might work fine, 20 is a spot with a lot of variance. I don’t really expect us to keep him
We have 3 guys taller than 6’6″.
It is an issue. And has been for years now. We are undersized 1-3 and tall at 4-5 (with no shooting).
Combo forwards and frontcourt shooting and frontcourt ballast are needed.
Of course, some wing shot creation/versatility was also needed. But IDK if this guy turns into a legit 2 way guy.
But picking 20 in this draft was never gonna yield a HR pick. Though after 16 picks with da Silva and Knecht on the board, I was getting optimistic there for a second.
Like the strength and all around game. Will need to keep improving to stick in the league.
I’d say if he has drive and intangibles he’s got a shot, but otherwise he doesn’t have the size / hops he needs to be an NBA rotation wing.
Maybe a good counter to Emoni who is so slight.
All the good wings were long gone by 20.
THINK HE IS A BETTER SHOOTER THAN MILLS —- BUT IF HE CAN HAVE A CAREER LIKE MILLS IT WILL BE A GREAT PICK
FOR THE 20th PICK IN MEDIOCRE DRAFT—- PROBABLY A SOLD PICK ——LAKERS FALL INTO GOOD PICK 😡—— T SMITH STILL OUT THERE ALONG WITH OTHER INTERESTING PROSPECTS—— KOBY ALWAYS SEEMS TO DO BETTER ON DAY “ 2” OF THE DRAFT—— SIGNING UNDRAFTED PLAYERS
I didn’t know who this guy was until last night. But it looks like we’re adding someone who isn’t one dimensional, like many of our current players? For us old heads, it’s giving off Chris Mills vibes.
back to the glory days of “Mills, Phills, and Hill”
Plus those crazy uniforms and Mike Fratello trying to win games 75-70. Man, what an era!
Seems like a solid pick. Don’t know enough about him to really say more. Wish he was a little taller for a wing.
