CtB Trifecta: Quickcap, Preview, and Cavs @ Wizards Live Thread
2024-10-26Good evening CtB!
The Cavs took care of business last night 113-101 in their 2024-25 home debut against the Detroit Pistons… some quick takeaways from last night:
A Group Effort
The Cavs win last night showed a lot good things. First, was the egalitarian nature of the offensive attack… six Cavs were in double figures and nobody scored more than 20 points. By no means is yours truly saying that the offense has to look this way every night, it’s just nice to see that the Cavs can morph into whatever situation calls for. It didn’t call for big star performances, and it’s always nice to get other guys who aren’t normally offensive stars such as Dean Wade (19 points) and Ty Jerome (13 points off the bench) some confidence because they will need to be willing scorers when the games are important.
A Defensive Masterpiece
What really carried the Cavs last night was their defense, which held the Pistons to a 101.0 offensive rating. Outside of Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey heroics, the Pistons could do nothing and it resulted in 13 steals and four blocks for the good guys, and 22 turnovers for the Pistons. It’s not like the Cavs’ defense was perfect, they were outrebounded and they let Jaden Ivey and Cade Cunningham torch them from outside… but by causing enough chaos with their defensive energy they were able to manage the game to a relatively easy victory. Evan Mobley added to his Defensive Player of the Year résumé with six stocks; four steals and two blocks.
A Quick Word about Detroit
JB Bickerstaff has them playing hard and they were not an easy team to deal with… as it was aforementioned, Cade and Jaden are a dynamic duo. The problem was that they have absolutely zero help, so Coach Bickerstaff has a tall task on his hands.
Next up: @ Washington Wizards
The Cavs had to catch a late flight last night to the banks of the Potomac River to take on the hapless and tanking Washington Wizards tonight to cap off the opening stanza of pretty bad teams to start the year for the good guys. The Cavs will be favored, have heavy legs, on the road, and need to win given the kind of aspirations they claim to have for the post-season. Starting 3-0 would be a dream start for Kenny Atkinson’s Cavs, I believe it will happen… Cavs by 10.
Tip off is scheduled for 7:00PM Eastern time and will broadcasted live on Fanduel Sports Network Ohio, Go Cavs!
LT up
I’d never have guessed it was so recently, but it turns out the answer to Jason’s question about when the Cavs last hit more than 50% on field goals in three consecutive games was during this calendar year:
That’s not a typo–it was a four-game streak!
Crazy work!
Crazy work. Atlanta plays no D, but Orkando and Milwaukee do, though much less so with Dame than Jrue.
If that streak his 4 this year in NY, I am gonna be wide awake in Believeland!
if it hits 7, …
Not a whole lot to add from your correspondent in the field. A lot of Cavs shirts/jerseys in the crowd. Mostly Donovan though I did see a vintage Big Z. Like others I initially wondered about Jerome not coming until mid/late 2nd qtr, but he got his time and was, once again, damn effective. DG effective early and DM took over for a bit in the second half. Lots of cheering for JA dunks. Biggest cheer of all was when TT missed both free throws so fans got some chikfila chicken. They’ve beaten these bad teams, but none of them… Read more »
THANK YOU FOR BRING HOME THE WIN PATRICK!!!! CTB COMMENTARIAT UNDEFEATED
The road gets tougher this week: at NYK, LAL, ORL. But with a new coach, new system, and missing a starter, the Cavs are 3-0 and #2 in the league in point differential (+20.3) and PPG (128) and have shot over 50% on FGs every game so far and lead the league in FG%. While playing 10 guys. There is no universe where this is not a good start for the team and an encouraging one for the coaching staff. Yes, Raps, Pistons, and Wiz. But 2 on the road and Detroit gave Boston a better game than they did… Read more »
CORRECT ME UF I AM TOO HARSH ON TT —// JUST DO NOT SEE HIM AS OUR SOLID POST BACK UP “——“ FATHER TIME “ HAS WON OUT ON HIM —- BRING UP —“ MORE THOR “ PLEASE —- START GIVING HIM THE ROTATIONAL MINUTES—— TIME TO SEND TT TO THE BROADCAST BOOTH
He is the 3rd string C. He dies not really play except in garbage time. But if JA or Mobes is hurt, he’d have to. It is a tricky spot for us to fill, because there is not much PT. So a FA C will be reluctant to come. That leaves you with young, unproven, guys or over the hill guys. We have TT & Thor. But aside from a long, 2-way wing, I think it is our biggest weakness. But it is also the #12 spot on the roster: Core 4 + Strus & Levert + Wade is 7.… Read more »
What’s crazy this year so far is our “deep bench” is TT, CPJ, and Jaylen Tyson. I’d trust each of those guys with mins in a pinch. Tyson does have the problem of a slow release…that wasnt fiction. But my goodness is he in a great situation to fix it.
Niang and Okoro couldn’t do shit on offense, but they finally REBOUNDED!!!!! LETS GOOOOOO 4 STOCKS ICE TOO
Niang theoretically stretches the floor, and Ice is still our best perimeter defender. They have their uses. But your general point still stands
But we have 14 guys who won’t crap the bed if they have to play meaningful minutes. They have passable NBA skills. Weaknesses, no doubt, but strengths as well. Tyson can score. CPJ can run the offense. TT can defend & rebound. Niang can space the floor as a big. Okoro can defend and score in transition. Merrill can shoot. Players not projects.
Really nice DG game tonight, as well.
I know the schedule has not been super tough so far, but have we been over 50% FGs each game?
54% tonight. 51.2% vs Detroit. 58.6% vs Toronto.
Wonder when the last time we were over 50% 3 games in a row? Without Strus no less
IS CAMPY DONE BROADCASTING CAVS GAMES —POST GAME ??
yeah, he’s accepted a full time role with the team’s alumni association I think.
DOMINATING WIN ONLY ONE STARTER PLAYED MORE THAN 30 MINUTES LMFAOOOOOO
👍👍👍👍👍 SIMMO
POSTED BEFORE SEASON STARTED ——- JEROME WAS GOING TO BE OUR “ HIDDEN GEM “ 👍🏀
Nomad bringing the receipts!!! Love it.
Last year’s jokes about him being “questionable” now seem more like a prayer. A second unit leader is vital to a great rotation. He knows his role
SAID/ POSTED SPIDA WAS GOING TO EXPLODE THE 2ND HALF
Credit where credit is due.
Love seeing the habit of pushing the ball held true to the final possession before they let the clock run out. Lots to clean up but the overall feel of this team is finally consistent.
STILL NEED A BETTER BACK UP POST THAN TT
FOUL SHOOTING NEED s WORK
SHOOT IT ROOK 👍🏀
“‘GEM “ JEROME IS A STEADYING FORCE
TY RUBIO!!!!
This is how top teams deal with pesky competition…I love it. Be consistent, pour it on when you get a chance to separate, and be even more consistent. Could do without the mini van…but coach has limited his minutes way better this year
Speaking of … Coach has gone 10 deep for double digit mins each of the first 3 games and the most mins anyone will have played is 33.
JB he is not.
right. JB has many good points, but he never got smarter
Yup, even with Strus not available, still trusts ten others consistently. And giving the deep bench minutes any time the game gets out of hand.
Rebounding still needs some work.
6 inn double figures and 3 with 20+.
I love it.
ALL THE HOMIES LOVE MERRILL THANK GOD KENNY HAS UNLEASHED HIM!!!
MERRILL IS BACK BABY LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
