Live Thread: Bucks @ Cavs
2024-12-20Good evening CtB!
The Cavs welcome the surging Milwaukee Bucks to the frozen banks of the Cuyahoga River for a national TV NBA Friday night showcase between two aspiring contenders from the Central Division of the Eastern Conference. For the Bucks, after a horrendous start to the season, they are now arguably the NBA’s hottest team with three nice wins against the Orlando Magic, Atlanta Hawks, and Oklahoma City Thunder for the NBA Cup. For the Bucks it’s an opportunity for revenge because the Cavs have beaten them already twice this season and could possibly take the season series tonight with a win.
For the Cavs, this is a golden opportunity to remind the NBA who’s boss… and there’s rumors that Max Strus could be back for his season debut, though he’s still listed as questionable and every indication has shown the Cavs will not put him on the court until he’s actually ready to go. The timeliness couldn’t be better since Swiss army knife Isaac Okoro has now been hit with the injury bug and is out at least two weeks, maybe longer. The Okoro injury also opens up possible playing time for rookie Jaylen Tyson, who dabbled in some G-League action and dominated to the tune of 21.0 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game on 25% usage with only a 11.8% turnover rate according to Basketball Reference. This would be a perfect time to get the rookie some opportunities to gather some experience.
Slop Season Reaction
Recently Sam Amico of Hoops Wire was speculating on the Cavs’ current and future salary cap considerations and possible trade rumors. Let’s start off with the most urgent matter, which is the pending luxury tax penalty if they don’t cut 1.9 million dollars of salary off the roster by the end of the regular season. The easiest route by far for the Cavs to get under that number is cut NBA Champion Tristan Thompson or Sam “I Am” Merrill, both of whom are playing on non-guaranteed deals just over two million dollars this season. Both are difficult cuts for different reasons: for TT it’s just a bad look cutting an important player to the franchise’s history… maybe they find a way to just putting him right on the coaching staff or do some kind of back room deal which is the right thing to do for a franchise champion player.
As for Merrill, it’s impossible to cut him simply because he’s a key rotation player on one of the best value contracts on the roster, which is exactly what you need when you’re a contending team against the luxury tax. Coach Kenny Atkinson giving him consistent minutes this year is partly the reason for the Cavs having one of the best offenses in the NBA this season in spite of him being in a season long shooting slump. There’s also the point of Sam Merrill having some kind of Utah connection with Donovan Mitchell:
So what do the Cavs do? Amico suggested that Caris LeVert or Isaac Okoro could be tradeable assets that might bring in that coveted two way wing player to fill the gap between the core four. It is true that trading these two players now or soon would be selling high on either player. However with the kind of success the Cavs have had, the least disruptive move from a purely roster construction and luxury tax perspective is finding a way to cut/move Tristan Thompson without creating a PR disaster.
If we’re going to consider different, arguably more plugged in source regarding potential trades, we have to go back to the beginning of the season when Chris Fedor surmised that the two guys that could be on the move would be Darius Garland and/or Jarrett Allen, depending on how the early season went under the Atkinson regime. Well, it’s hard to say that the DG and JA haven’t passed with flying colors given the team results… however, it’s clear that the real core tandem of the Cavs’ championship aspirations are Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley. The most urgent question Koby Altman has to answer before the trade deadline: has he surrounded these two with the best supporting talent to make a push for a ring? Stay tuned…
This is why tonight’s game is big from a roster evaluation standpoint… the Cavs will have to handle Giannis Antetokuoumpo and recently returning Khris Middleton at the wing spots (barring injuries). Let’s see how they handle a real championship competitor.
Tip off is scheduled for 7:30PM Eastern time and will be broadcasted live nationally on NBATV and locally on Fanduel Sports Network, Go Cavs!
lately the Commish, LeBron, and other talkers have been gripping about all the threes being taken in the NBA, and “looking into” what to do about it. I say it is what it is, and let players and teams decide what is a good strategy. I think the NBA is at its best ever. any rules about three pointers would be somewhat similar to baseball, with the new rule about where the infielders can be positioned. I say let ’em play whereever they want. If batters can’t use the entire field, that is their problem. don’t get me started about… Read more »
I don’t know whether Milwaukee’s defense was bad or the Cavs ball movement was good (it was), but the Cavs had a lot of open threes which they were hitting.
So many of Max’s attempts were scarily open
Wow. That was a first class drubbing. I love the way the defense is constructed from good positional defenders — Wade, Strus, Merrill, and Garland, then guys with quick hands and anticipation for steals — Mitchell, LeVert, and Ty Jerome, and finally shot blockers at the back (Evan and Jarrett). It’s very steady and can wear down the other team. Okoro is kind of an X factor who can target specific players. The only real vulnerability in the D is hot shooting from outside. Kenny was talking after about the eventual shortening of the rotation, and I really hope he… Read more »
I am in favor of keeping a long rotation for at least all of the regular season — and maybe the playoffs.
For players like Jerome, Niang, and Merrill it’s hard to see them getting minutes over better players who are similar threats in the playoffs (Vert, Wade, Strus).
That said, Sam seems to unjunk the offense – loads of chemistry with the bigs and DM – even when he’s off so I’m not sure he sits.
BTW, we are now over the 33% mark of the season. 24-4. On pace for 70-12.
Great article on the Cavs at NBA.com via John Schuman. Very stats oriented..Cavs cilurrently have the best eFG% in league history, amongst other tidbits.

Regarding Amico, I do not think the Cavs will make a move to get under the tax.
I believe Gilbert is willing to pay the tax if:
1) The team is a legit contender and
2) The number isn’t huge ($1.9 mil is nada)
3) They are not in repeater land
4) They are below the second apron
All that is true atm. I think once the determination is made that the Cavs are a contender, they are more likely to make a move to being in reinforcements rather than cut.
I think there are roster restrictions that come with the various tax levels?
Awesome play tonight. Getting a little ahead, do y’all think that KA shortens the bench in the playoffs, or does he stick with 10 (or 11)? Why not just stick with a big group and keep everyone fresh, hopefully through a long second season?
I’m sure he has, but I don’t remember when KA playing more than 10 in a game that wasn’t decided well before the final buzzer. I think he’ll provide more playing time to those outside the top 10 in games where they have the luxury of doing so.
He spoke briefly at the presser about shorting the rotation eventually and needing to have conversations with players about accepting the purely bench role. He broadly hinted that George would likely be in that position. But of course, that only applies if the guys in front of him don’t get hurt, and George’s durability is his biggest strength.
I think he’ll have a bigger rotation than a JBozo one, and he’s definitely talked about his Olympic coaching influence of playing larger rotations to push pace and maintain defensive intensity.
The Cavs opened up a can of whoop ass in this one. Good to see this game over after 3 quarters. Wonder if Embiid will play tomorrow.
Out per nurse
That’s an impressive performance tonight.Serious beatdown territory.
Scrubs unit looking like scrubs.

Bad stretch for Tyson. Couple dumb turnovers and a dumb foul.

Bench points have almost been exclusively off of threes through 3 quarters. Only 4 points out of 28 were non-threes.

That was an offensive foul on Giannis.
DEAN WADE COMING TO PLAY!

Let’s go Cavs!
Lets go Cavs!!! I believe the Cavs will make some move just because it makes too much sense financially. TT would be the obvious choice but it is kind of a bad look. Fully healthy do you think Sam is in the rotation? I think yes, and possibly over *gasp* Ty Jerome? Its core 4 plus Max. Caris, Ice, Dean, Merril, Georges as the bench. But nearly always someone is injured hence the 11th man.
