Live Thread: Cavs @ 76ers (part deux)
2026-01-16Cavs up for round two in the city of brotherly love. No Merrill, Garland, Strus, or Wade, so we’ll see how the guards shake out. Philly should be at full strength. Let’s hope the defensive focus and Philly ‘s lack of conditioning keeps up. Also hope that De’Andre Hunter has another solid game and the Cavs figure out who to start in Garland’s spot. (Love to see a Tomlin start). Go Cavs.

VERY GOOD POINT s JASON 👍👍👍
DELONTE WEST ARRESTED FOR STEALING $20.00 —— SOOO SAD THAT HE DIDNT GET / ACCEPT PROPER HELP——————- ANOTHER SAD NBA STORY——KYLE SINGLER ( WHO EARNED OVER 25 MILLION) IS HOMELESS AND CONSTANTLY IN TROUBLE WITH THE LAW ———- THERE IS HELP OUT THERE—— GET IT/ ACCEPT IT / USE IT!!!
Perhaps a bit late, but listen to Philly YT guy venting about Tyson etc.
Unbelievable Collapse. The Sixers got COOKED by Jaylen Tyson and lose to the Cavs again.
REALLY WAS HOPING THE CAVS WOULD GET DaSILVA ( MAGIC) IN 2024 DRAFT —- HAVE TO ADMIT WE HAD TO “ SETTLE “ ON TYSON————— SEE “ OL NOMAD “ ISNT RIGHT ALL THE TIME
I liked Tyson from the get-go. if I recall correctly, he had a steal and a layup in his first 5 seconds in the NBA.
PER FTS —- DG OUT AT LEAST 2 WEEKS ( I AM GUESSING IT WILL BE 3 or more ) ——- KA —- KHAYES IS READY FOR A “ COUPLE 10 DAYS “ 👍👍
DG should sit until both toes are right. Period. I don’t want him gimpy & ineffective (again) come summer.
Let CPJ start to see how he handles it. Ball can deputy on non back to back nights, and maybe more PT gets him into a shooting groove. Hayes can fill in for Ball when needed.
Hopefully Sam & Dean back soon.
From FTS, KA said Wade could play as soon as tonight, he does not expect Sam to be out much longer, and Strus was even on court for a workout.
And I forgot about Proctor entirely.
Yeah, you know what you have with DG more or less and you know that some matchups will be better served with sizing up on the perimeter, so test those. A ramp-up post ASB should suffice for DG or if you must. Be interesting to see if he goes on the end of month road trip.
Worst case he needs until March or so.
Get Lonzo and Hunter right, give Tomlin and Tyson more opportunities, CPJ and Hayes and Proctor can eat innings. End of season schedule is softer so it should be OK.
100 percent agree. In the meantime, KA needs to get in CPJ’s ear to shoot the 3 when left open; he’s over 39% on increased volume, take the shot. And definitely make sure Proctor gets regular minutes while DG’s out.
CHARGE COME BACK/ WIN 132-126 —— KHAYES 26/ 8/8 ——— OMIER ( MY NEXT NYQUIL PROJECT/ PROSPECT) 20/12 —-VERY EFFICIENT AROUND THE BASKET—— HAS TO BE ABOVE 60% FG% FOR THE SEASON
Omier being efficient FG% is pretty impressive being an undersized big.
like Charles Barkley
KHAYES 20/6/ 8 ——CHARGE DOWN BY 2 —START OF THE 4th 👍🏀💪
KHAYES 8/4/3 ——- CHARGE STRUGGLING AT HALF—BEHIND BY 18— SEE IF THEY CAN CHANGE THINGS THE 2nd HALF
👍👍👍👍👍LGOH
Tysons performance so far this year has highlighted one very important thing that the Cavs have done pretty well the last several years – develop non-lottery talent into solid NBA role players. Wade, Merrill, Tyson, and Tomlin are all guys that could find a role on pretty much every NBA roster. Porter would be a solid back up PG for maybe half the NBA and Proctor is looking like he definitely belongs on an NBA roster. With all the big contracts at the top of the roster, turning late first and second round picks into viable bench contributors is required… Read more »
Great post.

Regarding DG & Tyson:
Nate’s take is bold (Cotton), but I just don’t see it. At least not now. First, they dont play the same position. Second, Mitchell is not a great PG (6 TOs last night, Tyson 4). Third, CPJ is a PO virgin, and Ball has been poor.
I guess if we got a big PG who can playmake & defend back, but I just don’t see it.
For me, Tyson’s emergence makes a Strus/Hunter trade more likely.
But I don’t think we unload anyone. Ball & LNJ have been disappointing, but they are for June, not January.
Try to nurse DG & Strus back to health while developing Tyson & Proctor. Limit the minute(s) for Mitchell, Mobley, & Allen. Try to guide Hunter & Ball through their shooting slumps.
If we flame out again, then changes will be made.
IIRC, Wade, LNJ, & Bryant are the FAs. Ball & CPJ have club options
HAVE DG AS FIREPOWER/ PLAYMAKER COMING OFF THE BENCH——- ON MY K HAYES KICK — TRADE LONZO—SIGN HAYES —- CAN PLAY PT / OFF GD / SMALL FORWARD
I’m not sure that the FO would ever allow that given DG’s salary.
my guess is the FO cares more about winning than starting the highest paid players
Winning by 26 with Garland or 2 without him?
Sure, bud
Facts are stubborn things.
I think we’d love Hayes to turn into what Ball was meant to be.
Nate, you mentioned below that you think that Tyson’s big game signals the end of the DG era. Really interesting take. DG is super talented and likeable, but I’ve always thought he is a net negative for this team given his size and injury history. I’ve been banging the drum that we should trade him for years now (for a bigger 2 guard). The only risk with trading him is that he is the only pure playmaker on the team. So are we thinking that Tyson has emerged as a proper 2 guard that can slot into the starting lineup… Read more »
now that Tyson is emerging, the idea of trading DG is not so bad as it was
the smart play is both/and : there are going to be lineups and matchups where you need him. Driving an offense that can put 150 up on Minnesota is a good thing.
I don’t get the zero-sum mentality. More talent >> less talent especially when you have ancillary talent that minimizes fit issues.
we regret letting Hartenstein go and he was only 8/8.
Jaylen Tyson now into the #2 spot for 3pt shooting % in the league. Merrill in #8.
Tyson mania! Tyson has been getting steadily better since day 1. as I recall, his first time on the floor was after a timeout by the other team, and Tyson snuck up and stole the inbounds pass and went for a layup: one steal and two points in his first five seconds. I recall some grumbling about drafting a five year college player, under the theory that the best players get drafted early. rewatch how he organizes and leads the defense (pointing for Ball to help him double team Maxey) in the last 4 seconds to keep Maxey from getting… Read more »
interesting factoid from Jason Flickinger at FTS:
I want to give Ball some rare credit for the final inbounds pass. it appears the plan was go to Mitchell, and the 76’ers were denying it, and Ball put it where only Tyson could get to it. attempting to go to Mitchell might have been a ruse to get the ball to Tyson. if KA drew up that play the way it transpired, he gets a gold star.
if nothing else, Ball should be the designated inbounder for final plays, although that takes away the standard ploy of passing it right back to the inbounder for the last shot.
Think it was a ruse, looking at everyone’s movements. Ball executed nicely. Have to say, I don’t like him shooting, but he’s got great hands and vision.
and he is fairly tall

haha!
It should not be forgotten – Tyson had the ball in his hands at the end with a chance both to hit the game-winning layup “and” to notch the first 40-pt game of his career. How tempting is that for a guy seeing his first meaningful minutes this season. But he was facing a tough contest. What did he do? Passed to the more-open Mobley who was cutting down the lane.
I noticed this as well. Makes one smile
I have enjoyed watching the last possession about a dozen times. notice that AFTER the great pass to Mobley, Tyson got ahead of the inbounds pass, pointed for Ball to double team Maxey, and they both stayed in Maxey’s path without a foul, resulting in Maxey having to throw up a Hail Mary at the buzzer, as opposed to a decent shot that would have won it. so give Tyson one more star for organizing and leading the defense in the last four seconds.
Mobley had a much better shot because Tyson drew both defenders in the area
GOOD WIN BY THE GOOD GUYS—- NOW KEEP IT GOING!!!——- ANOTHER 3 WINS LAST NIGHT 41-1 UPPER 3 GRADES ( FROSH/ JV / VARSITY) SORRY FOR BRAGGING—-SO PROUD OF THESE GUYS!!!
Great aggressive play by Deandre; otherwise really a moment to shine for all the young guys. Tyson with maybe the best game anyone on the roster has played this season; Proctor explodes for 13 points in his last 7 or so minutes of play, and his shot looked pure, with a very quick release; Tomlin declared war on the rim in the second half, he is a beast!; and CPJ doesn’t always “look” like he’s doing much, yet he had 11 assists – in just 22 minutes! – to one turnover in a game where Spida and Mobley had trouble… Read more »
Feel like Jalen Tyson just ended the Darius Garland era in Cleveland.
was thinking the same thing.
Sign of a smart take is not being able to spell the player’s name
This was a good game for DeAndre and a good gameplan by Kenny to keep his defensive assignment (stick PG) simple.
Still a handful of bumbly plays but he made a real difference.
79 assists the last 2 games for us? Lordy!
Is my math right?
We have been poor so far. And the injury list is lengthy: Strus, Wade, DG, Merrill, LNJ. And we seem to be 2 steps forward & one step back a lot.
But ….don’t look now, but the team with the best record in the East over the last 10, is …….the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Into 6th. Even with Orlando for 5th, 1 game back of Toronto for 4th, 2 back of the Knicks for 3rd, and 2.5 back of the Celtics for 2nd.
OKC is next, so probably a L there, but easier sledding, on paper, the next month or so.
Beat Orlando twice (unfortunately one game is a B2B) and we likely get pole position for the #3.
I shoukd kention in that “easier” stretch also includes a 5 game west coast trip: Suns, Blazers, the suddenly red hot Clippers, Sacremento, and the Joker-less Nuggets.
Those have gone south before.
Killed Philly on the glass fwiw.
Better start fearin that fro
Tyson is the missing piece. We’re going to be such a hard out in the playoffs.
Didn’t see the game. Tyson with 39?! Tell me more.
Some really hard shotmaking coupled with insanely good decision making apart from two or three choices. Floaters hitting over Embiid and a crazy fading three over Joel as well.
He is such a smart player. No bad shots today.
and he made it look easy
Tyson has had other games with the catch and shoot 3ball going (lots of them, he’s still at 46%, now 43 games into the season!). But last night as the second half went on, it was clear even Spida was deferring to Tyson as the #1 option at least for one night. He was making something happen off the dribble when the offense broke down, and taking (and mostly making) the bailout shots. That’s a level up.
Raptors headed to OT against Clippers.
And lost.
I liked basically all of this game. Tyson’s emergence; Tomlin’s energy; Spider’s crafty fourth-quarter sting; Hunter’s “You’re not yet back, Embiid” two-fisted dunk; CPJ’s unselfishness; Mobley and Allen’s continuous length and mobility; Proctor’s productivity; and the team’s continued attempt to jumpstart/up the trade value on Ball…
Yeah. Largely agree.
There were a couple negatves:
The 3 straight turnovers ar around 5 min (Allen Mitchell, Mobley) thst turned a tie eith us with the ball into down 7 eithout us getting a shot up was brutal. And 18 TOs is too many (Spida 6, Tyson & Mobley 4 each). But everything else?
39!! 39 points for Tyson. 11 assists/1 TO for CPJ. We won a game, in the clutch, without Mitchell going off (4/13 FGs), while shorthanded. Hinter good again. Real contributions from Tomlin & Proctor.
Tomlin will be an incredible defensive piece. I had no idea based on SL that he had that. Between him and Wade and Tyson we might have enough guys to hold the line defensively.
Basically everyone not named Lonzo played solid. Impressive short-handed win against a solid team.
