Live Thread: Cavs @ Sixers
2026-01-14(In my best John Michael voice). The Cavs travel to the city of brotherly love for a two game set against the 76ers. The Sixers appear mostly healthy with a a contingent of players “available” and “probable” as they return for the injury report. The Cavs, meanwhile, will be without Wade and Strus as they look to bounce back from one of their worst losses of the season, a mindless loss to the Jazz that undid a lot of the progress they’d made in the previous 10 days, made us question their shitgiver, and beg the question “what is Cavs?”
It’s a big game for Cleveland. At 21-19 they’re chasing the 21-16 Sixers to climb out of the play-in spot in the east. I’m excited to see V.J. Edgecombe. I’m not excited to see he and Maxey light up Garland, and I’m really not excited to see Joel Embiid ‘s whiny ass.
After laying a big fat egg against the Jazz, De’Andre Hunter set the record straight that he doesn’t want to get traded. We’ll see if he plays like it, and if after this one’s over, Cleveland will sit one or three games above .500 at the midpoint of the regular season. Go Cavs.

I am just saying how it could be done. Livingston and Hayes have zero impact on this year’s results. This is simply a little ng term play. I guess in that sense Hayes has more upside, but I’ve seen enough to know I’ve seen too much.
The counterpoint to this is “how long did it take Merrill to stick? Danny Green?” Some guys take a long time to figure it out. Some never get the chance.

I guess. They could drop Chris Livingston and bring him up. I don’t think this team is short on guards though, and the dudes never been able to dent the Association.
They still haven’t really taken a look at Proctor, though. If CPJ is starting for a bit and playing 25+ minutes, Ball splitting backup minutes between 1 and 3, and Proctor finally gets a consistent 12 mins a night for awhile, you’re still covered from a “bodies” perspective, even if your net rating during Proctor’s rotation looks rough.
Exactly. But there’s value in bringing a guy up seeing how he fits with the club, his practice habits, etc. Not everyone is going to be Tomlin, who’s a rarity.

Best case is that they rely on Hunter and Ball and both guys figure it out a bit better. We aren’t using any of the other guys in the playoffs (and we might not use much of CPJ or Tomlin tbh).

I agree with this in the big picture, concerning who would likely see the floor in the playoff. But they will be committing malpractice if they don’t test as much as possible CPJ’s usage against playoff caliber teams. Bc DG even if/when playing is still gimpy, and the last thing I want to see is back to back playoff runs running completely aground due to point guard injuries. Ball by himself can’t carry it if DG were sidelined again in April; and if you ask Spida to run too much point you repeat the way the last two playoff runs… Read more »
Re: DG foot injury – hard to tell from the video, suspect big toe sprain and wasn’t weight bearing when it happened, more of an awkward bend. I would hope for a week out. If it’s a month, wrap it up people, this season is likely over.
the Cavs will not fall out of the top 10 playing without DG, so all that matters is everyone being healthy when the playoff(ins) begin.
Just have to find a way to play for the duration. It kills any trade deadline activity though bc you now need Ball and Hunter imo

If DG is out Friday I hope we go with CPJ in his place, not Ball. It’s time to see just how playable CPJ is when asked to do more. Nice to see some 3s from Ball going in though.

He did. I mean Ball’s definitely been better overall in his recent appearances than he was the first couple months of the season.
He was good in the first couple months at everything but scoring. He still can’t finish around the basket and will only try when completely wide open. Dude seems gunshy about it. His shot is coming around and if he takes the pull up threes early in the clock out of his game he’ll be fine.
That’s fair. My observations are very anecdotal since I haven’t seen many games this season (gonna change this week with all the nat’l TV coverage). But the two recent games I saw where Ball had his 3-ball going, there were no heat-checks. He only shot in flow off the catch. So that’s a positive.
