2026-11-02Cavs host the Thunder, who’ve had about the worst injury luck in the association so far. They’ve been decimated but still are chugging along to a 4-2 record.
Meanwhile Peyton Watson is a game time decision and Jalen Tyson is outwith an ankle. Let’s hope the Cavs can dominate the paint like they did against the Bucks. Go Cavs.
I don’t think’s ever a reason to play CPJ this season outside of (a) garbage time or (b) when at least one of Mitchell/Harden is missing the game. It doesn’t get the team ready for postseason; he wasn’t playable at all last postseason and shows no sign that he’s any better now. And it’s not helpful from a strategic player development perspective bc unlike Meleek or Proctor, he’s had a long, multi-season look already and will turn 27 in February (Meleek will be 20 all season; Proctor turns 23 in April). trying to get psyched for the Cavs being a serious contender — and they lose at home to half a team. I didn’t catch any of the game because I was at the movies with my GF. “You can see everything” is so long I thought the elections were over by the time we got out.

That game was infuriating. So many stupid choices. JA leading the team in net rating, benched for a rookie in crunch time. Free throws, missed rebounds, not getting the ball out of Shai’s hands. Inexplicable tech. CPJ getting any run at all.

This was November dumbassery on the margins, much but not all related to lineup weirdness, but that’s never mattered much because a CPJ / Bryant lineup is never happening in a game that matters.
I mean, we got absolutely smoked in the second quarter when SGA was out. 15 offensive rebounds (22 second chance points) with Holmgren and Jalen Williams out. 58% Free Throw shooting is just plain unacceptable. As far as Atkinson’s coaching goes, its not JUST this game. He historically plays lineups that don’t make sense, is slow to adjust, seems like he comes into a game with a plan and refuses to make changes to that plan on the fly. He definitely has a default preference for small lineups. And even if you credit his reasons for it, they make less sense now because 2 of the 3 rotation bigs are or have evolved into decent outside threats. So you should always be able to keep two bigs on the floor (since you know at least one can shoot) unless a small lineup is working great – not getting punished on the boards or in bad iso matchups.

Great point, maybe could’ve gotten one of the million rebounds we didn’t get.
I agree, Merrill was subbed in for Jarrett after he missed a pair at the line in the final 4 minutes. I understand taking Jarrett out at that moment, but why not bring in Hezonja next instead of immediately defaulting to a 4-guard lineup? Especially since Hezonja also can shoot the 3 (36% coming into tonight).
KA is so bad at making adjustments. Hez was making a huge impact all game. Merrill did make a three down the stretch but we gave up like 3 critical offensive rebounds that led to SGA buckets in that same time span. But good ol Kenny had already decided that if it was close down the stretch this was going to be his lineup.

Sure, but then you either need to get him more rest so he’s available to close games out if needed. Or, why not go to Hezonja who had already come up with several big rebounds earlier in the game and demonstrated quite a bit of success staying in front of SGA.
