Antawn Jamison Will Leave in the Offseason
2012-04-26Antawn Jamison said goodbye to Cleveland tonight, making official what already seemed so obvious. Tonight was his last home game and Thursday’s game at Chicago will be his last game in a Cavaliers jersey.
Fare thee well, Antawn. You’ll be in heaven soon, playing for a contender with the angels.
I hated Antawn early in the season until I went to the season ticket holder event a few weeks ago and realized what a great character guy he is who had to have a ton of positive influence on the rookies. That is the one thing the team next year is going to miss.
Take it easy on the guy people he’s not a villan. He tried the best he could with the talent that was around him. he was on a team with guys half his age and not bc he’s ancient, bc we had nobody with any experiece. In my eyes he did what he was paid to do, score and you cant say he shot too much bc even with him shooting the ball a ton we were almost dead last in ppg, if he didnt score who would. So thank you antawn you and kyrie made about 20 or so… Read more »
I’m so happy to hear that he will not be back.
Mallory – I think its better to reserve such a quick judgement until weighing everything that’s involved. If your argument is on the basis of Jamison’s scoring and only his scoring, wait until we can see what Jamison’s replacement next year will do and compare that to what he provides. If your argument is PER, Jamison did indeed have a higher PER than everyone you mentioned (16.2 PER as of 4/1/12), however his opponent had a 19.4, giving him a net of -3.2 while he’s on the court. By position, that’s worse than Anderson Varejao (+1.9), Tristan Thompson (even), and… Read more »
We don’t need to “replace” Jamison, just make the team better. If we had tried to replace Lebron’s 27/7/7 after he left, we would have ended up with 2 or 3 mediocre, overpaid players. OKC has no scoring option at the PF or C positions and they’re title contenders. A top 5 draft pick could replace Jamison’s skill level right off the bat (15 PER). Tack on a decent, CHEAP free agent and the other draft picks, and the Cavs will be better next year. That’s not even including the fact that KI and TT will be better and Andy… Read more »
We don’t HAVE to sign anyone in Free Agency. I know we’re all feeling a little impatient, but there’s no excuse to sacrifice future flexibility for a 7 seed in the playoffs next year.
Well son of a bitch, I actually agree with Mallory. (No offense, dude.)
We’ll miss Jamison’s scoring. If we don’t get it in the draft, we have to sign a FA that’s not Larry Hughes 2.0.
Is there any chance we can throw a ton of money at Omer Asik?
John –
I’m sorry, but there is no way you can compare Jamison to the DLeaguers we had. Jamison’s PER was substantially higher than guys like Harris and Hudson. The point is not that Jamison is a spectacular, complete player. It’s merely that he was able to score with at least some efficiency on some occassions which is something, now that we know he’s leaving, that we don’t really have beyond Kyrie.
Jamison is horrendous. 6’9 bums that play no defense and shoot 41% from the field in 33 minutes a game can be found elsewhere. Just look at some of the d-league players that filled in this year and put up points with minutes.
This doesn’t mean anything other than keeping him was a 2 way street and at least one of those streets weren’t open to it. Oh, and TT will get more time to develop next year.
Antawn scored 17 a game this year, and took 16 shots and 4 free throws to do it. I think if we just tell tristan to take 16 more shots per game, he can’t be much worse. Really, nothing jamison did this year was helpful (besides getting us better draft position), good riddance. Oh wait, he mentored the young guys on how to shoot first second and third, give up half way through the season, and never, ever contest on Defense. Surely he will be missed. also, no thanks on mayo. And hoopsdogg, pick a side already. Either tank or… Read more »

I’m not sold on Bradley Beal: not THAT tall, not that big of a wingspan. He seems like O.J. Mayo 2.0. Anyway, I think the plan is to suck next year get a great pick, then go hard after James Harden. Who knows?
By the way, when I said 21 points a game, I guess I was basing that off of his early season averages. It’s pathetic, but I think we’re going to have to go after a guy similar to Jamison in that we’ll need a vet who knows how to score, is a good character guy, and wont mind taking extra money to play on a crappy team. Like almost everyone has said, there will have to be some sort of big FA signing this offseason. Which brings me to a thought i had early today – isn’t OJ Mayo just… Read more »
Mallory, are you trying to tell me that you think I wont be capable of scoring as much as Antawn Jamison? You think I’m not capable of jacking up shots at will without even recognizing where the basket is? You think I can’t shoot an abysmal 40% from the field? You also assume that with the other three draft picks, my boy Chris Grant isn’t going to find some other scorer? Or, you know, actually use that whole “Free cap space” concept we have going for us this summer? If antawn jamison served a purpose this year, I would love… Read more »
Well, maybe if TT improves his offense, Andy comes back and builds on his rapport with Kyrie, and whoever the Cavs draft can add 10-14 ppg, the Cavs can replace what they’re losing. That said, what I hope and what will probably happen are two different things.
If we draft a wing first, we’ve got to sign a big with some offensive talent. Hibbert or Ilyasova if we can get either…
I agree Mallory. Aside from obviously dreaming of Anthony Davis, this means we kind of need Bradley Beal. To me, he seems like one of the only guys with legitimate 18 ppg potential his rookie year.
Obviously in the grand scheme of things it’s almost meaningless, and I’m happy for the guy, but his 21 points a game will have to come from someone new. Unless we want the Lukes to shoot 20+ times a game each!
This is good. Jamison isn’t part of the long term solution. He got to play mentor for a year. Time to move on.
I have to say, I’m a little sad about this. Antawn was a really good character guy and definitely helped the rookies adjust properly. Additionally, I’m a little worried about next year – the Cavs aren’t exactly crawling with scorers, and even if we get a top tier wing next year, we can’t expect a rookie to manage that huge of a scoring load. I know it wasn’t always pretty with Jamison, but he really did serve a purpose on this Cavs team.
