Live Thread: Hawks @ Cavs
2015-11-21The Atlanta Hawks face the Cavs tonight at 7:30. This game will be on FSO. The Cavs are dealing with some injury issues. Timofey Mozgov and Mo Williams are both unavailable for the the game, along with Kyrie Irving. This bumps Matthew Dellavedova and Tristan Thompson into the starting lineup tonight.
The Hawks are also confronting some injuries. Jeff Teague looks to be a game time decision.
Jeff Teague (ankle) won’t start, but he’ll warm up and Budenholzer is hopeful he can play tonight
— Jason Lloyd (@JasonLloydABJ) November 21, 2015
Kent Bazemore is also out this game. The Hawks starting lineup looks to be Dennis Schroeder, Kyle Korver, Thabo Sefolosha, Paul Millsap, and Al Horford.Â
The Hawks were the Eastern Conference darlings last year getting the number one seed for the playoffs, but their lack of a super star to match up with LeBron James in the Eastern Conference Finals was their undoing, as were minor injuries. They seem to be confident in the teams’ current structure though. They stood strong during the offsesason and tried to keep the team together. DeMarre Carroll was the only guy who left, and they added Tiago Splitter.
Atlanta is second in the league for assists, dishing out 26.1 per game. The Cavs currently sit at fifth in that category getting 24.2 a night.
Paul Millsap is their leading scorer getting 18.1 points a night. He’s also their leading rebounder averaging 9.2 boards a game.
Things to Watch
-Last season, DeMarre Carroll was the Hawks’ stopper. He typically covered whoever the opponents’ best player was on the wing. He was backed up by Thabo Sefolosha, although Sefolosha missed much of last season with injuries. Now, Thabo is the only wing stopper, and that’s just about all he can do on the court. He will be tasked with guarding LeBron. Paul Millsap will also spend some time on the King. If those two slow LeBron, will the King settle for jumpers, or will he move off the ball to get some easy looks? LeBron should also look to get Millsap and Sefolosha into foul trouble early, because outside of those two the Hawks have no one who can stand up to him.
-Al Horford and Paul Millsap are high functioning offensive players in the post. Kevin Love has had his troubles dealing with post behemoths this season, so it will be interesting to see how David Blatt decides to cover those two bigs. With Timofey Mozgov out of the rotation, the Cavs are going to have to lean on Andy early if TT or Love gets into foul trouble.
-The Hawks pass the ball a ton. The Cavs will need to stay focused, as Kyle Korver is going to be on the move looking for the 3-ball all night. Millsap can step out and hit some 3s too. Schroder is hitting just 33% from deep, but he’s taking nearly four of them a game. This team is hitting 9.1 3-pointers a night.
-With how much the Hawks pass, the Cavs might try and play the passing lanes more. They need to be responsible if they do this because the Hawks can make them pay. They find the open man more often than not.
-If Paul Millsap gets going, the Cavs need to place TT on him. TT shut him down during the playoffs last year. See the headline picture if you’re having trouble remembering what TT did to poor Millsap.
Prediction
The Cavs should be able to pull this game out if they remain focused. While the game against the Bucks was about being physical, this game is going to be about execution. The Cavs need to take care of the ball, and remember that the Hawks are looking to create an open shot. They don’t need to bite on every pick and roll. I’m picking the Cavs, 112-92.
LeBron looking like some Le Browns substitution confusion there.
What was that? LeBron left the floor, leaving 4 guys on the court.
Hawks are missing easy bunnies. It’s not their night.
Cols Scouting Report Alert:
Delly most certainly drove into the teeth on that.
The Della-Lobba!!!!!!
That’s the consistency I want from Kevin Love.
Really like the way they are incorporating Love this season.
@CVivlamoreAJC: Tiago Splitter will not return with right hip pain for Hawks.
oh nice 7-0 to start the 3rds, lets keep it up and give them a blowout like Game 4 of the ECF
I love our blue threads but can they please go with the regular white when playing at home? Those are one of the nicest, cleanest in the league.
And can Lebron please go back to regular length shorts?
Looking good. Looking good.
TD pass from the receiver to the QB.
76ers are up 33-18 on da road VS Heat, I would love if they could get their first win tonight lol
And getting against the Heat would make it sweet
Tristan trying to get another pay raise to 94 mil.
@mcten: Tristan Thompson has 5 assists at the half, tying his career high. Last season, his high assist game was just 2.
This looks like a continuation of the playoff sweep. Wish I could find the image someone tweeted out after that series with the ‘Certificate of Participation’ for the Hawks.
Here it is:

Playing like this and missing Kyrie Shump Mozzy and Mo. So sweet!
CLE with only 5 TOs. CLE dominating boards 30-16. CLE defense holding ATL to 37% FG. CLE with 14 assists.
We are basically doubling up ATL on da glass, 30 -16, outscoring them in da paint 20-14 as well
YOu beat me to it… noticed the same thing.
Why dont Lebron actually run a play when the quarter is ending ? Sigh annoys me
I’m not too annoyed but I know what your saying
LeBron got hacked then no call, followed up with pouting and Sefalosha scoring.
This has been a great half.
Delly irritating Millsap…
Delly Tray!!!!!!!!!!
Looking like playoff defense by the Cavs right now.
Holding ATL to 35% FG%!
J&R blockblock!
Great defense!!!!!!!!!!!!
JR + Delly nice pressure out top, then JR blocks a layup from behind.
Some nice moves by JR, but it would’ve been sweeter if he hit the shot.
That looked like a charge on Teague.
Cunningham does pass and move well. Schooled in the Princeton offense at Oregon State.
I’m really loving this ball movement.
13 assists on 19FGs.
Gotta laugh at Love there. That was one weak attempt to foul on the break.
Love does seem to foul very weakly. He needs to make the fouls count.
The Hawks missed Sefalosha in the playoffs.
Great energy from the Cavs tonight let’s hope they bring this same effort to their road games.
Lol that is funny and probably part true
T.T. IS AUDITIONING FOR THE STARTING SPOT —-EVIL / COLS WHERE ARE YOU ?
JR just needed a little off-court controversy to start feeling more comfortable with his shot.
Anna Horford is going to have another field day on Twitter.
TT with 11 boards already!!
Somehow this is all Delly’s fault.
I wish I could rec this.
Dang it I should of played TT in my daily fantasy tonight:)
THIS BUDS FOR YOU !!
Tony Brothers, ladies and gentlemen. Wtf just happened?
Coach Bud bumped ref, that is why he got tossed.
Wow Coach Bud is tossed!!!!!
Doing the bump with the ref on the court during play. Why are all the Hawks so baffled?
Jefferson another good contract :)
JR is so hot he’s scoring for the opposition.
TT earring his $$$$$$$$
JR is so hot, he’s scoring for the Hawks.
Wrong spot and Arch beat me to it anyway.
TEam high 4 assists!
TT destroying the Hawks on the boards.
Delly with the post moves!
God, I love this team. Three starters out and the backup point guard. Still. Playing. Balls out. Delly on the best contract in the NBA right.
Just tuning in. Is it really the second quarter and Delly hasn’t injured anyone yet? He’s slacking off.
JR playing well this last few games.
Cavs are really moving the ball around nicely tonight. Andy contributing nicely. JR looking like himself again.
I thought JR. would have a big game tonight. Keep feeding him
JR is ????????????
Good move but poor execution by Delly.
Not a bad first quarter.
Not bad indeed w no points from James 27 is sweet
Not sure Kevin is on the exercise bike?
Hawks are getting a little too many open 3s for my liking, but they’re not falling, so it’s working out.
I like the pace and passing. The 3-point shooting could be better.
Yeah it started off good w Jr. and then……
Cunningham doesn’t finish around the rim.
Um…that’s basically ALL he does.
He plays defense. That’s his most important asset. He doesn’t finish around the rim well. At least it seems that way, as I don’t have the stats right if front of me.
JC’s stats around the rim are pretty good actually… but I do remember a game he had this season where he couldn’t finish anything around the rim.
If anything, he’s terrible with anything outside of 10ft, according BBR.
I wonder what they look like when he’s defended.
Well, it does say he’s better from 3-10ft than he is from 0-3ft, which seems to suggest, to me anyway, that length/defenders bother him around the rim.
Not to beat a dead horse. but he can’t do much with the left hand, which means he’s easy to throttle around the hoop. Defenders always know where the shot is coming from.
Love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Our favorite ref Tony Brothers is officiating tonight.
Wonder why the players don ‘t walk out on player intros the last two game So?
106-99 cavs with a big game from JRMand Delly gets under Dennis for a T
SAD DAY IN THE STATE OF OHIO—-NEED A CAVS WIN TO CHEER ME UP —-GO CAVS !!!
Yes indeed. That was depressing and to hear Draymond bet Lebron makes it even sadder. Take it on the Hawks Lebrom
What happened sir??
Buckeyes lost to Michigan state
Yeah sorry to hear that. Not following football that much, and I ain’t from your country so..
Anyways it’s not the national championships yet right??
Oh football I see..
Welcome, depressed Buckeye fans.
Good evening CtB! Your numbers for tonight:
CLE is a 5.5pt favorite over ATL, with an p/u @ 199. A CLE cover is a slight smart money bet, while the under is a heavy smart money bet.
I’ll take CLE to cover 102-96 over ATL.
GO CAVS!
