Live Thread: Cavs @ Hornets (#WatchTheStingers)
2016-02-03The Cavaliers flew into Charlotte yesterday for the second stop on this quick road trip tonight against the Hornets. It’s actually the last time the wine & gold will be away from their own hive at the Q until the 21st of the month, and one of just three remaining road games for all of February (well, everyone that is, except for LeBron, Tyronn Lue and the Cavs’ coaching staff who will be traveling to Toronto for All Star Weekend). On the surface, this looks to be a fairly easy buzz through the Queen City for the King and his men… especially given that the Hornets’ starting PG, Kemba Walker, will likely have his wings clipped for this one with a knee injury.
Charlotte may also be without Nic Batum (toe), but will have a few members of it’s colony back with Jeremy Lamb and the fully healthy Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. The Cavs would be wise not to look past this Hornets team, even without a healthy Walker, however. Charlotte certainly still has the ability to slow the Cavs in transition and protect the rim. According to ESPN stats, they are second in the NBA with 38.5 points allowed in the paint per game and are among the top 10 with 11.8 allowed on the fast break. Even when the Cavs swatted them 95-90 in a win at Charlotte on Nov. 27, both teams had just six fast break points each, and the Cavs owned only a 40-36 advantage in the paint. Of course, Kyrie Irving didn’t play in that game, and without Kemba to stay with him, points may be a little easier to come by.
On the Cavs’ side, LeBron himself was reportedly dealing with the after-effects of a stinger (of a different kind) that he suffered during the third quarter of Cleveland’s overtime win against the Pacers on Monday. He is expected to play, although Matthew Dellavedova has been called a game-time decision by Coach Lue, as he’s apparently been dealing with a sore hamstring for the last week. If Delly can’t go, expect to see some rare Mo Williams action. And, on that topic… while the Cavs really need to work on shoring up their recently honeycombed defense, this may not be the game we see it completely jell with the potential change in the back court. Still, they should be able to push their winning streak to six games.
Cavs likely starting lineup includes: Kyrie Irving, J.R. Smith, LeBron James, Kevin Love and Tristan Thompson. And, for the Hornets: Jeremy Lin, Nicolas Batum, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Marvin Williams and Spencer Hawes.
Game time is 7 p.m. (EST), and the action can be seen on FSO, or heard on 1100 WTAM.
Prediction: Cavs take a few stings, but outrun the Hornets 108-101.
Commence buzzing…
JR is apparently opening his own sneaker store…
http://www.complex.com/sneakers/2016/02/jr-smith-team-swish-sneaker-shop-coming-soon?utm_campaign=complexmag&utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social
Kevin Love has 95 points on the shop scoreboard.
That pass by Lebron to Kyrie is impossible to 99% of players to ever play in the NBA. Dude can be maddening at times, but his talent is out of this world.
Good call. We take these cross court, skip passes for granted.
Being double-teamed, falling back and with a defender (Batum) lurking for the steal on the weak side. And he put it right in the pocket of Kyrie. Amazing,
Good ending to the qtr.
Legler had a stat that only 20% of iso plays at the end of a quarter or game get converted. This research was for over the last five years. Glad we moved the ball.
I LIKE IT!
Seriously, my pass goes out and we immediately go on a 13-1 run to end the half. I quit.
LOL… isn’t that just the way it goes?
Let’s see what Lue has cooked up for the inbounds…
Did we just try to run an actual play at the end of a quarter? That must be a first in Lebron’w time with the Cavs.
Man, Mozgov is just a million miles away from last year. He is minus 5 in 7 minutes tonight. All year he’s looked terrible. He’s 30 years old. I was sure he’d get max, now I don’t even know if we will want him. He better be incredible in the playoffs.
Wow! Bron behind the head pass…
Thank you and that is pretty smooth
Not bad. About 3 inches wide of the shooting pocket.
Is like one game (vs the Spurs) they play the right way but then all the sudden against the not so good they just play hoping the other team will just quit.
Yes Love for 3 finally
As usual, my league pass just went out. Almost made it to halftime this time.
So that’s why KLove finally hit that three… /s
I’d really love to see Andy in this game…
This game is kind of screaming for him.
Jeremy Lin gave up the spiked ‘do he had last time for a corporate look. So Love officially has the most out-of-control hair in the game tonight.
He’s got the “Long Duck Dong” look going…
That is just funny.
Lol. Though my favorite movie he’s in is Gung Ho.
Mine is UHF…
No Delly today must be bad karma or something.
MJ just looks thrilled to be at this game…
He only looks thrilled at the blackjack table.
Little early for ISO, no?
I like Lue and there are some good things happening in general, but the last 6 quarters do not look like a well coached basketball team.
JR with a clean but crunching screen…and no foul call! At least the second time tonight the refs had a chance for a rep foul on him and didn’t take it.
The fast pace and ball movement lasted like 8 minutes and I predict a lot of ISO’s coming up.
Now we’re being outrebounded 23-8….. and the Hornets have as many off. rebounds as we do total- 8
Perhaps the worst rebounding effort, or lack thereof, this year. Can’t recall a bigger disparity in a half.
Yeah not something we are usually concerned with.
That ref is killing the Cavs…….
Frank the Tank or Glass Joe?
Getting killed by random dudes.
Not random. Marvin Williams was drafted before Chris Paul.
These offensive boards are a problem…
8 for Charlotte, none for the Cavs.
The omnipresent Tristan Thompson held the ball outside the 3pt line.
Wtf, Fred?
At least TT is drawing fouls…
I miss our old defensive coordinator.
This one too short for you?
Frank the Tank has a super punchable face… Like Glass Joe from Knockout punchable…
Shump is alternately great and horrible when guarding Lamb…
Kyrie!
I’m about to punch Mo in the teeth.
At least he’s shooting it okay…
Lamb completely held Love’s arm on that rebound. Lazy by Kev though.
How does nobody block out Lamb there? Baaaaaa
Nice steal by Shump!
Why does Lue continue to do that? We have three great offensive players capable of running a competent offense. Not one, not two. Play one of them every second of the game. Shouldn’t be so hard.
Down 18-7 on the boards, but at least no turnovers so far….
MKG is long and rebounds a lot…
Wow, that is ridiculous. Put Andy in if that’s the only thing to stop the bleeding on the boards. My word.
Here’s a better look at the JR Block…
He lost his man, but good recovery.
That fires me up! And he didn’t get the reputation foul call.
Shumpert needs to work on his dribble drive game instead of his pull up midrange game
Yeah, he settles for the pull-up because he doesn’t have confidence in his handle.
He needs to focus on his catch and shoot three game and leave everything else to the professionals.
R.J. drains one!
Need a vine Evil of the block at work listening not watching, please!
Thank you sir! this site rules for more many reasons.
my typing is not one of them…..
Unbelievable block by the pipe layer.
That block by JR should be the play of the night! Just amazing!
Well wonder if James is going to play the whole game after playing 44 minutes on Monday. I will be aggravated once again with rotations if he plays more than 5 minutes in the second.
He’s going 48 tonight… /s
The dropoff between Mo and Delly is huge.
Mary had a little LAMB who got blocked by J.R.!
Smith has 3 steals and 1 block and Love has 2 blocks, love it. Just hit a few of those 3s
Whoa!!! What a block by JR
Wow JR! Great block on a nice alley-oop inbounds play at the buzzer.
Terrrible last possession.
Does Mo ever pass anymore?
JR BLOCK!!!!!! WOW!!!!
Wow nice defense Mo!!!
Glad they got back to driving that possession…
Okay… who let Frank the Tank get in there?
Was that four or five O boards for Charlotte on one possession?
It was. Nary a box out to be seen.
Mo sighting….
An early Mo sighting with Delly out tonight.
Mo Gotti in the game…
Love may have to ride his D to contribute tonight. Just 2-8 shooting so far, including 0-4 from deep.
I like the aggression though. Keep going to him if he’s the open man and don’t be afraid to shoot.
get him more down low and then to the FT line will help. But LOVE his D
Mozgov is about an hour late on every shift or close out. Man, he sure looks slow in this uptempo offense.
Love ice cold from three. what up lovey?
Kind of walking it up the floor in halfcourt tonight. Not surprising considering how many minutes the starters played monday. Only a few sets with much significant off ball movement thus far. Mostly p and rs or love postups.
Did we trade for Ibaka?
Love with two blocks already. Continuing to build his case for the All-Defensive team.
Where’s the “like” button when you need it.
His rep vs. reality on D is probably the biggest gap in the league.
Love with 3 misses on open threes. This could easily become a blowout if those start dropping.
More than most players, Love appears to really get going if he hits shots inside first.
His j is so streaky.
LBJ going for the knees, Delly style…
Great pass to TT by Kyrie. One that he normally tries to get up to the basketball himself.
Get up to the basket….*
Great start, 3 buckets by 3 different players
CtB is the best. A bit off topic: This year we might see JR in the 3 pt contest. It would be interesting to see an intra-Cavs competition as we have 3 former winners on the team: KI, KLove and Champ….plus Delly as a dark horse.
More on that here if you’re interested:

No point four-ward today? How so?
We need some chill mode this game.
Yes, it would be great if the Cavs could play well enough in the first three quarters that they could have some “chill mode” in the fourth…
