Live Thread: Cavs @ Thunder (#LikeIts2011)
2017-02-09In case you maybe missed it… the Cavaliers added a player this morning to fill the 15th spot on their active roster. The identity of this new player should bring back fond memories of the days leading up to the 2011 NBA Draft… and the heated debate (at least in some corners) over who former GM Chris Grant and the team should choose with the number one overall pick that year. It was an important decision to get right, since this player would very likely be the new face of the franchise to replace the departed LeBron James. In the end, the Cavs went for the Duke freshman point guard with the sick handles, Kyrie Irving, over the Arizona sophomore forward with the slash to the rim game, Derrick Williams. In hindsight, it was possibly the best decision Chris Grant ever made on a draft pick, as Kyrie has gone on to become an All-Star and helped lead the Cavs to their first championship… while Williams has suited up for four teams in the last five years, and has been unable to fully realize his potential.
Though they passed on Williams in 2011, he might just fit the bill for what the Cavs need in 2017… especially on the second night of a back-to-back where the team might have limited bodies in action against the Thunder in Oklahoma City. Granted, it’s just a 10-day deal, but given Lue’s rededication to trimming LBJ’s minutes as the season wears on, Williams should have a prime opportunity to eat up some time backing up the King while also reducing Richard Jefferson’s workload. He played just 25 games this season with the Miami Heat, averaging 5.9 ppg and 2.9 rpg in just 15 mpg, and had fallen out of their rotation in recent weeks before being waived last week. The Cavs probably hope he can recapture a bit of the success he had coming off the bench for the Knicks last season when he averaged 9.3 ppg, 3.7 rpg in 17 mpg, shooting a career high 45%.
Despite Coach Lue indicating last night that he was thinking about resting his big three of LeBron, Kyrie and Kevin… it sounds like everyone will play in tonight’s nationally televised tilt with the Thunder on TNT…
Per Coach Lue, everyone's playing tonight in OKC. Guys are on a good roll and want to keep it going.

It also sounds like Williams will be with the team and will be ready to go…
Derrick Williams is here and playing for the Cavs tonight. He'll wear 32 tonight, and then switch to 3, I'm told

I don’t care what number he rocks… mainly because I can’t wait to start using his nickname (one of the best I’ve seen)… The Whole Enchilada from La Mirada.
With Williams in the fold (at least for the next 10 days), the Cavs now have three of the top four picks from the 2011 draft on their roster (Tristan Thompson was #4 that year in case you forgot). Even the third overall pick (Enes Kanter) should be in the building, although not on the floor as he’s still recovering from a broken arm suffered in a fight with a folding chair. Three other members of that draft class will also be represented with Iman Shumpert, DeAndre Liggins and Kyle Singler. It remains to be seen if Shump will suit up with his ankle sprain. If he doesn’t, then Lig will likely take his place again in the starting lineup at SG.
While it might be a surprise that the Cavs aren’t going to rest the big three, it’s not a surprise that they want to keep their win streak rolling (they haven’t swept a road trip of four or more games since December of 1994 according to Elias Sports Bureau). In an odd twist on the Thunder side of things, they actually have to resist the urge to look past the visiting NBA Champions, since they will host their former teammate, Kevin Durant, and the runner up Golden State Warriors on Saturday night.
It should be another fun one, as both teams can light up the scoreboard and stuff the stat sheet, and the Thunder (if they can keep their minds off of KD’s return) should be looking for a bit of revenge after getting blown out in Cleveland a week ago.
Prediction: In honor of the draft class of 2011… Cavs sweep the roadie 120-111.
Catch all the action on TNT (twice in one week!) at 8pm EST (5pm PST).
Free throws an issue again…
Similar to last night… getting beat on glass and giving up high shooting %
Let’s hope the Cavs don’t fall back by double digits tonight again .
That Ky to Kev dish was cool tho..

FTs as well (1-4). Slow starts starting to tick me off.
MEANT “TOOTH HURTY “
Seeing how tired James obviously looks, I wish Lue would have at least sat him.
WHAT TIME IS IT —IN OKC ..IT IS “TOOTH THIRTY “
We are sucking. Iso stuff on O. Poor transition D. TOs. RJ hits the glass. To the line.
10-0 run to end the quarter… same sort of thing last night…
Six turnovers in the 1st quarter. They look like some guys could have used a rest…
C’mon RJ… you gotta hit those dude…
MAN SLOPPY PASSING—I CAN LIVE WITH A “L”—GO 3-1 ON ROAD TRIP–GO HOME RESTED –RECHARGED –SIT THEM TY —-
OKC not making the same mistake of not covering Korver like Pacers…
We have to move the rock more. Too much iso. They are also playing us to pass on drives. I’ve seen 3 or so stolen as we try to kick out to shooters on the baseline.
Korver owes TT. He got posterized cause of Kyle’s lousy d.
Bron clearly tired… blocked by Roberson and bad turnover off his foot…
TOs an issue again.
Wow… TT just got postered by Abrines…
Irving playing out of control
Kyrie trying to do too much…
Ky stuck on that screen…
Hope Threezus can stay hot…
Irving distributing well tonight
There we go K-Love. And again! Good dime from Kyrie.
Awful call there. That was deflected.
Super two man game with Ky and Love! What a pass and what a roll!
Transition D is still awful. Layup and-1 after a made 3.
IDK… Roberson cherry picks like nobody I’ve ever seen…

Kyrie with a heckofa pass
Korver & JR for James & McRae. Love still can’t hit. Kyrie can.
There you go Kev!
Ridiculous foul call
Ball does not shill for Ivanka though…
Worse than a root canal
THEY ARE “GASSED ” PLAY THE BIG 3 THIS QTR AND THEN SIT THEM —-GIVE DWILL ALOT OF REPS
Man… Roberson is some kinda cherry picker…
Dunk off of a FT. Awful.
Why McRae over Liggins?
Early sub out for Bron…
Russ seems out of control…
Right into the teeth of the defense that time.
Is this thing on?
You can’t handle the tooth…
Tooth or Consequences with the Big Three tonight
Wow! Great move by LBJ to drive that break!
LBJ not looking so long in the tooth, there.
Good D by Love that time…
Well, at least the Mamba can hit shots…
NEED TO START THE ” MELO/ LOVE ” RUMORS AGAIN—-SEEMS HE GETS FIRED UP —PLAYS BETTER WITH THE RUMORS OUT THERE—-SARCASM !!

Cavs defense is toothless right now. Ba dum, dum.
Love is struggling early. As are we. 4-5 empty trips in a row here. We just fall apart w/out Liggins.
Do they sell ibuprofen in OKC? Sounds soft
I can tell you’ve never had one. Think more along the lines of precoet or coedine.
Been lucky. Just normal cavities
I really think LBJ should be on a strict 45 minute limit tonight.
I REALLY DO HOPE THAT IS THE CASE FOR LIGS —OTHERWISE THAT WOULD BE TOTAL B.S. !!
Two ugly trips in row. Sore tooth can really hurt.
Oladipo pwning McRae early.
Back to the bad transition D so far…
Well… Dipo is hitting early… candidate for the EG Hex tonight…
Sore tooth for Lig.
Offense looks out of sorts the last two possessions…
McRae is starting. TV & announers haven’t noticed.
Got my answer…

Mamba with the start? I just don’t understand…
OKC fans still can’t sit…
I’m betting ole Adam Silver called up Griffin and Gilbert and said, “We don’t get billions on a tv contract so you can play your stars against Indy and sit them on a national TV game against OKC.”
Hah! My idiot self figured out the pictures!
I’ll try my: that wasn’t the D-Will we were looking for (again).
Yep… we got this one instead…
https://twitter.com/joevardon/status/829858773799993344
This Charles Oakley/Knicks story is out of control…
Joss W, er, EG already on a roll with pics! :)
“It’s gonna be a great game, but I’m gonna be watching Scandal and Duke/North Carolina in the back…” – Charles Barkley
That is a sweet hat Kyrie is wearing. Two-tone wine with gold under. Dig it.
Hopefull D-Will will play well enough that we don’t have get that weak enchilada outta here.
WOW THAT PICTURE OF KY—LOOKS SO YOUNG—AND REALLY SMALL !!
WE HAVE TO SHORTEN HIS NICKNAME —–JUST HAVE THIS FEELING WE MIGHT HAVE FOUND ” LIGHTING IN A BOTTLE ” WITH DWILL—-TIME WILL TELL …..WHAT KIND OF GRADE DO THE SO CALLED ” EXPERTS “GIVE THAT DRAFT CLASS ?
