Live Thread: Cavs @ Timberwolves (#Loveless)
2017-02-14Is there a sadder way to spend Valentine’s Day than without Love? Well, that’s the predicament the Cavs and their fans find themselves in tonight as they close out this year’s holiday with the knowledge that they’ll be missing Love (Kevin that is) for about six weeks as he recovers from knee surgery. The painful irony doesn’t stop there either, as the destination the Cavs will be spending this normally romantic evening is the same place that Kev called home for the first six years of his NBA career. You can bet Love would have enjoyed firing threes like Cupid’s arrows from deep in the Target Center in Minneapolis, or showing his heart and desire pulling down rebounds like so many valentines from the admirers he probably still has amongst the Minnesota faithful.
Probably the most heart-breaking thing for Kevin himself, is that he won’t be able to take part in the All Star Game this weekend, after working hard to put together his best season to date in a Cavs uniform. And, while it’s certainly a tough break for both him and the team… it’s not the end of the world (though the angsty, love-stricken teenager in all of us might be tempted to feel that way). No, the Cavs’ hearts will go on… and they’ll pick themselves up, and carry on to try and take down the young Wolves on their home court where they’ve been close to .500 this year (14-17).
Minnesota has had some misery of their own recently, having lost Zach Lavine for the year with an ACL tear, and forward Adreian Payne indefinitely to illness. Yet, despite a sub-par record, they do feature two young stars of the game in Andrew Wiggins and Karl Anthony Towns. Wiggins, who was spurned by the Cavs for Love to start his career, always seems to get up for the team that drafted him. He scored 23 points against the Cavs a couple weeks ago in Cleveland, and is averaging 22.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. Towns is averaging 23.7 points, 11.1 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game, and also had a big showing against the Cavs with 26 points and 12 boards.
The Cavs do get some good news tonight, as Iman Shumpert returns to action, and is reportedly not on a minutes restriction for the game. This should help cover at least some of the minutes lost with Love out. In Love’s place, Channing Frye will get the start.
Cavs probable starting lineup: LeBron James, Channing Frye, Tristan Thompson, DeAndre Liggins, Kyrie Irving.
Timberwolves probable starting lineup: Andrew Wiggins, Karl-Anthony Towns, Brandon Rush, Ricky Rubio, Gorgui Dieng.

Prediction: Despite their lost Love, the Cavs lift their spirits and break a lot of hearts in Minnesota while pulling out a 123-118 victory.
That LBJ pass to DWill…

Wow missed that live on a kitchen run
Wiggins had gotten James twice on that post up.
Kyrie returns. Refs miss another. Hooking.
Ball does not listen to Mike Flynn…
Don’t get that foul… didn’t look like Korver touched him…
James is ticked after messing up that break & the Lebrick the last two trips.
Some terrible shots the last few possessions…
I love James’ response when the asked him what he needed to do to step up with Love out. “I never stepped down.”
4 FTs in a row!
LeBron be balling.
James is making some amazing passes this game.
I’ll take that foul. Think we can hit them all from the line? 5-12 for the game.
That LBJ/Frye two man action earlier…

Great pass from the King to a cutting RJ there. FTs.
That was one of the dumber fouls I’ve seen by Bjelica…
Love the movement on offense.
RJ nice moving without the ball

That’s an Achilles. Calling it.
Looked like he just rolled the ankle really bad, no?
Yup it’s just a rolled ankle.
Stephenson sprains his ankle. Ouch. Hope he’s OK.
Man, that looked super painful…
RJ slam!
Wow… maybe good they didn’t sign Lance…
Lance cans a J. Frye responds.
GET UP OLD MAN!
That three was from St. Paul…
The FTs Bron… the FTs…
2nd Q. James, Korver, D-Will, RJ, Frye fivesome.
Give and go… and one!
Supersize lineup redux…
LBJ and Ky haven’t really gotten going yet, so not the worst start… D still a bit loose
Almost a steal there. Lance cans a 3. Down 4. We give up 30 in a quarter again.
Think it was just a two…
JFJ with the strip!
Yep… friggin ear whisperer…
Enchilada from Korver for some FTs. We are leaving some points at the line. Frye in for TT.
Wonder if Lance will have a scrub-fuego kind of game since Cavs didn’t sign him…
Well… FT misses have infected even the new guy…
D-Will in. Kyrie, Korver, D-Will, Champ, TT.
That sure seemed like a goaltend…
Buddy ball…

That Ky/TT P&R clicked there. Pretty.
Champ for Frye.
I get the idea that Shump is our most tradeable player in some ways. Still, I think trading him is not a good idea.
Early run for the Champ!
These guys must give Thibs migranes…
Cavs turn it on. Minnesota is a lousy defensive
Deep Fryer again! Channing may get his average over 10 ppg if he’s the starter for a while.
Ew. Just tuned in. One of the ugliest courts I’ve seen. Step in up Minn.
*it. Step it up bw..
Have you not seen the Target Center before? Brooklyn is worse…
Hmmm have check it out. Just remember it being bland.
10-0 run for Cavs to respond to Wolves 8-1 run…
Can beat this team with threes…
Hell of a pass from LBJ… Shump just missed it…
Yes. Yes it was.
Shumpert 2×2 from deep! Make, Ricky. Shoot.
Awful call there.
Definitely didn’t look like Dieng had his feet set…
SHUMP! On his game!
Deep Fryer!
TT hasn’t been able to stop KAT yet…
We have to give TT some help on KAT. He’s too long for him. Help off of Ricky.
Here we go again with the bad defense.
What’s Love got to do with it? A lot in the first quarter, when he often gets the Cavs off to a good start. James has to more assertive scoring now in the first.
Cavs 2-8, Wolves 6-8 = not winning.
I think LBJ just picked Tristan for the wide open KAT slam… and then yelled at him for it…
LBJ is till pissed about the election, like the rest of us.
Who would’ve thunk it – LBJ splits his first pair of FTs.
SHUMP! He’s back!
Couple of rim outs so far for Cavs…
Wow… that was a ways out for that KAT turnaround…
If there were an award for well written live thread intros, this would win.
It was lovely.
Thanks Nate!
Lol…

Shump starting at SG. Full go, no minutes restriction. I still like me some Cavs tonight. D-Will vs. Lance!
Nice intro, EG. Is there a sadder way to spend Valentine’s Day than without Love? Perfect
Thanks Mike!
