Playoff Live Thread: Cavs vs. Raptors, Game 1 (#TimeToWakeUp)
2017-05-01[Yawn…] …is it the second round yet? Seems like the Cavs have been off and resting for a month now. It’s actually been eight days, but that’s technically more time off then they’ve had collectively since October. They had similar downtime for the All Star Break, although both LeBron and Kyrie were working that weekend. Given how much this team was in need of some extra time to rest, recuperate and actually have a practice or three together, you’d have to believe the extended break was a positive development for the Cavs (especially given the number of vets they number on the north side of 30, not to mention Kyrie’s achy knee).
They may need all of that rest for the road ahead as well. Even though they swept their way through the first round against the Pacers, the games were all fairly close. And, their round two opponent is (on paper anyway) an improved version of the team they faced in last year’s Eastern Conference Finals. The only team, by the way, to take a game off of them before the Finals. This is not to sound the alarm, however. The Raptors earned a few days of rest themselves by finally dispatching the upstart Milwaukee Bucks in six games instead of seven. Maybe even time enough to help Kyle Lowry get his wrist healthy. Yet, though they’ve added Serge Ibaka and PJ Tucker to help with their scoring punch and defense respectively, they’ll still need transcendent games from their two All-Stars and some luck to even extend this series as far as last year’s.
Both teams struggled with holding leads against their first round foes… the Cavs due to defensive holes and the Raps due to stretches of stagnant offense. The Cavs averaged a franchise post-season record 112.5 points per game against Indiana, but gave up almost 109 points per game on the other end. Toronto’s series against the Bucks was much lower scoring, with the Raps averaging barely more points (93.8) than they allowed (93.2). So, the real difference in this series is likely to come down to whether or not the Cavs can elevate their defense, or the Raptors can get their offense going. Which is why the key matchup might actually be between shooting guards J.R. Smith and DeMar DeRozan.
As far as Game 1 goes, though, Toronto typically has a hard time winning them. The Raps are just 1-11 in series openers in the playoffs. Meanwhile, the Cavs are 15-1 at home in the playoffs since 2015 (the only loss coming to the Bulls in Game 1 of the Conference Semi-Finals that year). As long as the Cavs don’t decide to sleepwalk through this first game, the odds are significantly in their favor.
Probable starters: Cavs: LeBron James, Kevin Love, Tristan Thompson, J.R. Smith, Kyrie Irving. Raptors: DeMarre Carroll, Serge Ibaka, Jonas Valanciunas, DeMar DeRozan, Kyle Lowry.
Prediction: The Cavs answer the bell, stay woke and run away with a 115-105 Game 1 victory.

Lebron is beasting holy cow
LeBron is a beast. Strongest man in the game
DWILL
Bron’s form looked good on the FT…
Good first quarter but Toronto missed some easy baskets. I expect the score to be closer come halftime.
Nice quarter. Even got 25 seconds without Irving or Bron.
Solid first punch. Hope they keep focused.
Toronto shot like crap that quarter… but I like the energy from the Cavs
Oy. Shumpert you are the modern day Larry Hughes. Everyone worries about you having a big play early.
TT and bench crew??
The new stopper lineup lol
Are the Cavs playing good D, or are the Raptors playing like garbage?
I think it’s probably more on Toronto but hey, we can be hopeful.
La clams Blanca has an itchy trigger finger I bet
Sorry…obviously la clams Blanca is big Z
The white clam?

Yikes Shump… at least Kyrie found the open shooter I guess…
Well Shump. You redeemed a terrible season with that one. Woof.
Maybe not but that was vicious.
Aaaaaaaaaand airball.
Shump thump!
Followed it with atrocious D on derozan
SHUMPMAN!

Sometimes he is an elite level dunker. Kid can fly

I mean… how did he do this LEFTY?

Four.
3TOs for Kyrie. Hot shooting. Loose with the rock.
How come tgat wasn’t a flagrant foul?
Kyrie a little out of control right now
Early Shump… and not the good kind
Joseph loves playing against Kyrie…
Kyrie so all over the place. Two turnovers so far and some awful d, but hot shooting.
Make that three turnovers.
Dwayne Casey not happy with LBJ on that foul…
Gonna need a lot of those shots to go down for Irving to make up for the Lowry drives he gives up
Bad pass #2.
Lowry poked it away from behind…
Nice to see Kyrie hit a couple threes…
Kyrie’s d has been crap so far on ball.
Aside from that derozan runout the Cavs’ D is pretty solid. And that dunk… All-timer
So…the trappin thing will probably get us through this round, but it won’t work against the wiz or Celtics…too many ok shooters. Gimmicks are not real defensive improvement but I’ll take it if it gets us more rest and practice time

Not complaining, but the Raps have gotten a couple easy baskets in transition (I seem to remember the Cavs getting one, too.)
Strange 4 point swing there with the rare missed LBJ layup and the DeRozan coast to coast…
Strange no call on the layup as well…
Feel like Marv is being generous describing the Cavs defense this season as lackluster. It was a turd ball Marv, just say it.
That’s like a Marv line from Trainwreck
Two 10-0 runs in the first quarter…
Raptors playing super nervous. Gotta pounce before they calm down
They never play well in Game 1s…
DEEEP Three from JR!
Cavs trapping a lot early…
Really love JR’s current defense on on Derozan. Making him shoot jumpers and beg for fake foul calls.

Not sure why they have KLove on JV… but Love doing a pretty decent job on him…
I just noticed that LBJ alley oop jam was LEFTY! WOW!
Great off-ball cut by LBJ… great find by Love
JR wearing DeRozan like a shirt… didn’t see the foul that time…
Gotta watch the transition defense…
We look rusty. Sarcasm ON.

Oh. My. God. LeBron. Kyrie almost JR’d it.
LBJ bounced that jam right off his own head. He really IS everywhere.

Irving made that tough for Lebron…

#staywoke LOL
Hoooollllyyyy crap! That was an amazing start
I need to buy a VersaClimber
They are amped!
WOW!!
Kyrie tries again from the corner… succeeds!
Man… LBJ is still so fast!
KLOVE!
Ky misses three… Lowry hits one…
Nice defense…
At the Q to bring home a winner. Let’s play some D!!!
Good karma Mike!
HOPEFULLY IT IS A YAWN(ING ) GAME IN THE CAVS FAVOR TONIGHT —-BELIEVE THE REST WILL HELP R.J. THE MOST / AND WE WILL NEED HIM —SOMEWHAT CONCERNED ABOUT THE LAYOFF AND GETTING BACK INTO THE FLOW OF A “REAL ” GAME —-GAME 1 IS VITAL —-GO CAVS !!
I have a gut feeling that the Cavs will be ready tonight… Having time to practice will make a difference.
I forgot how short Mike Fratello is… he looks like a little person next to Campy…
PJ Tucker methinks, not CJ. He ain’t no Miles.
Good catch! I’m still waking up from the Pacer series… fixed now
