Link to the Present & Live Thread: Cavs @ Pistons
2018-01-30Happy Tuesday afternoon, Cavs fans. Hopefully your day has been relatively stress-free, because a very fantastic Cavs-related article released earlier today is probably going to make your blood pressure rise: this inside scoop written by Ken Berger of Bleacher Report.
In the linked article, Mr. Berger draws from various insider sources to take a deep look at the current state of your Cleveland Cavaliers, pulling the curtain back on issues surrounding the team’s daily communication, management, ownership, and much more. I don’t want to paraphrase or regurgitate too much of Mr. Berger’s piece, so you should read it if you haven’t already.
The article illuminates a number of disturbing trends cropping up in Cleveland and possibly confirms some of the worst fears Cavs fans have had about the organization, especially those related to Dan Gilbert and the Cavs’ “power structure” (I use this term loosely). In short, this past tumultuous offseason has had lasting effects on the franchise as the state of the Cavs appears to be rotting from the inside out.

from Jim Mone/Associated Press and Bleacher Report
Not all of the drama is news. We’ve been along for the ride since the ousting of David Griffin and Kyrie Irving‘s S.O.S. trade request, with everything coming to a head this last week with an explosive, finger-pointy team meeting led by newcomer Isaiah Thomas. We wondered where Thomas found the gall to call out Kevin Love for being sick, especially considering the former’s underwhelming start to his career as a Cav. But Thomas’ confusion may have been more innocent than originally thought: according to the Bleacher Report article, the level of communication in Cleveland is so poor that none of the players actually knew Love was dismissed from a game and the following day’s practice because he was sick. Not only that, but the article insinuates that had one of the players simply asked a trainer about Kevin, they would have found an answer.
What?
Imagine working in an environment like the one described above. It’s hard to say which is more flabbergasting, the failure of the Cavs staff to communicate Love’s status or the players’ lack of caring enough to ask about their M.I.A. teammate’s well-being. But, apparently in Cavs-land, players conspicuously vanishing without word is par for the course *cough-Derrick-Rose-cough*. Kevin Love still just can’t seem to get any love.

Remember him?
Once upon a time, the Cavs had David Griffin to act as a buffer between players and front office. He kept communication open and constantly had the pulse of his team. Is anyone left filling this void now? Well, Berger’s article informs us that at least one line of communication that is apparently up and running is the one between Gilbert and Thomas. The following passage paints a particularly damning portrayal of what Comic Sans Dan’s love affair with IT3 means for the team:
Thomas has become a favorite of Gilbert, and they often exchange calls and text messages, a league source familiar with their relationship told B/R. This isn’t necessarily unusual on a team with an owner who is as involved in the basketball side of things as Gilbert is. It also isn’t great for locker room chemistry, because the rest of the players know it.
“LeBron just looks at everybody as a shill for Dan,” the league source said.
We can safely put to rest any doubts that Gilbert has a weird obsession with dimunutive point guards. What’s worse is that much of the Cavs’ drama appears to be directly related to Gilbert’s reclamation of power within the franchise. It’s as many of us feared — @CavsDan is calling the shots and Koby Altman is window dressing. Maybe things wouldn’t be so bad if Isaiah Thomas didn’t look like such an awful fit after months of anticipation for his return. At the present moment, however, the void left by Kyrie’s departure looms larger by the day. This frustrating season also reportedly has the players losing hope in themselves. So many signs point to doom and gloom.
Still, things can change fast in the NBA and there is time to right the ship. A trade here and some lineup tweaks there could put the Cavs right back on the road to a championship and all would be well. Besides, how much stock can one put into thoughts from an article that draws almost entirely from unnamed sources? Ask Kyle Korver or Channing Frye and you’d be led to believe the smoke does not lead to fire.
There is also the LeBron James factor, because with that guy there is always a chance. And really, that’s who everything really all comes back to: LeBron. How does this season reflect on his legacy? Does he stay or leave Cleveland again? LeBron holds the future of the franchise in his oversized mitts. The reality that Dan Gilbert faces is going down as the guy who ran a basketball team so awfully he drove the potential GOAT off of his hometown team twice, unfair of not; remember, we’re also talking about an owner who has shown to be willing to spend on the team from his own pockets without limit. Is it any surprise there have floated rumors of Gilbert’s desire to sell the Cavs? Sheesh.
The Cavs organization has a surplus of oversized egos that should be checked at the door. Maybe this group pulls it together, maybe they don’t. Whatever happens, this Cavalier season appears to be heading for either epic success or colossal failure, without much middle ground. It should be more fun to root for a Cavs team with championship aspirations but this is where we are. Whatever happens, just try to remember to bask in every second that this legendary athlete from Northeast Ohio plays for his local pro team. We may never see anything else like it.
…
Anywho, the Cavs have a game tonight, as you surely know. They take to the road to face the Detroit Pistons for the second time in a row and look to win three games in a row for the first time this year and the first time since December 17th.
In Sunday’s game, Cleveland trotted out a “new” lineup that moved Kevin Love back to his natural power forward position and Tristan Thompson back to the starting center spot where he’s played for the Cavs three trips to the Finals. It seemed to spur the team to the tune of a 17-point victory for the Wine & Gold. Will the lineup shuffle translate into more winning basketball for the Cavs? And how will Isaiah Thomas respond after sitting out all of the Cavs’ dominant fourth quarter from Sunday?
In other major news, the Pistons recently completed the biggest trade of the NBA season thus far, in which the team acquired Blake Griffin, Willie Reed, Brice Johnson from the Los Angeles Clippers. You may have heard. In exchange, Detroit shipped off Avery Bradley, Tobias Harris, Boban Marjanovic, and draft picks. The Pistons would love to play their shiny new toys in tonight’s game but have opted to hold the news guys out for now while they get acclimated.
Will the new-look Pistons prove to be a challenger in the East? Or will the Cavs make short work of a team that will be adjusting on the fly? You never know what you’re gonna get with this Cavs team. Tune into TNT at 8:00 PM EST to catch the Central Division showdown, and whether you’re frustrated or hopeful about the Cavs’ past/present/future, be sure to sound off in the comments section!
Cedi not even dressing tonight. WTF
Trade?
They can’t trade him. He just sang the birthday song for Ally.
Lue is never going to change
buckeyes playing good ball —-is there any coincidence –last time cavs played terrible / got blown out —-kev didn’t play that game either —–WTF —-ON KEVIN —JUST OUR FRIGGIN LUCK
AND ONE!
Channing! And 1!
I swear… Channing is our best rim protector right now…
Vintage Wade….
Awful pass from Frye.
https://twitter.com/cavs/status/958514717475000320
Channing actually gave some rim protection that time… nobody grabbed the rebound though…
agree 100%—if true then why is he still here —-gilbert ” showing lebron who’s boss ” ??

Twitter doctors think Kev’s hand is broken…
I’m convinced LeBron loathes playing with IT. Comes alive when Napoleon goes to the bench.
I think that description fits almost the entire team, not just LeBron
https://twitter.com/NBAonTNT/status/958513756950224896
Man I thought that was a replay dunk. LBJ getting whatever he wants…
So that move where IT goes up for a jumper and realizes in midair he can’t get the shot over the defender — that happens like four times a game for him, vs. zero for an average player.
There are also at least four times a game when IT comes around a pick or a crossover, the defender strips the ball, and IT ends up on the ground..
There is no rim protection… zero…
is IT GOING TO “CALL OUT ” LOVE AGAIN ——cavs just need to admit that kyrie trade was a total cluster “………” cut IT and move on—-getting ready to switch to buckeyes game
Silly JR foul on a 3.
X-rays for Kev… yikes!
Yikes. Wouldn’t have happened without the stupid post pass. Hope Kev os OK. Is it the shoulder?
Hand.
Yeah he got a pass while double teamed.
That did not look good at all.
If Kev doesn’t come back… will he get yelled at?
Oh no! IT with two fouls! Have to bench him to save him for later.
Lol too bad it wasn’t more
JR starts cold…
Nice drive & dish from Chowder then a 3.
Lol. Isaiah bouncing like a pinball on D.
It’s weird how loud the PA announcer is in Detroit… right?
Two jumpers in a row for James.
I am getting thrown off by the Pistons’ PA announcer – louder than the commentators
Maybe its because the crowd is eerily quiet

Bullock posting up IT with a height advantage of almost a foot.
https://twitter.com/mcten/status/958511551878717440
Better let IT know or else.
And Lue pulls Love.
Hurt his hand…
Stanley Johnson should be embarrassed he couldn’t get by IT for that layup…
Bench IT
We force a ton of stuff. IT does. JR’s first shot was just silly. That post pass to Love.
gilbert texting IT –“IT;S OK LITTLE BUDDY “
Four turnovers for IT in half a quarter. Sit him already
BARF !!!!
think IT has spent more time on ground than on feet this game lol
That’d be like 28 turnovers for a full game…
IT averaging a TO a minute…
Bad oop from IT & then a silly post pass from someone to Love.
More layups…
Ya gotta dunk it T…
And a jumper. IT needs to just go right sometimes.
It’s always so strange playing the same team back to back…
Three turnovers in three minutes for Thomas.
And a poor alley oop pass to TT.
Nice tip in by TT!
Two rough turnovers for IT…
What’s up with LBJ’s bright blue kicks?
SVG is already triggered…
Isn’t that how he starts his day?
Yikes!
I like the Motor City jerseys…
Cedi singing happy birthday to allied Clifton’s was awesome.
cavs ‘have ” to win tonight —give allie her birthday present
so if SHUMP is a no show tonight –should we read anything into that / trade ?
Interested to see if JR keeps up the confident play. He’s had 2 straight games of looking like himself for the first time all season. Tristan quietly lookig much better of late as well
Let’s play a game. Replace LeBron with GilBert. #dimunutive
“Gilbert has a weird obsession with dimunutive point guards. What’s worse is that much of the Cavs’ drama appears to be directly related to Gilbert’s reclamation of power within the franchise. “
THE CAVS SHOULD PUT THIS GAME AWAY IN THE 1ST PERIOD/ THEN “BENCH ‘ LEBRON THE REST OF THE GAME ——–CAVS “TRADITION” DICTATES THEY WILL MAKE IT A CLOSE GAME AND POSSIBLY LOSING
Supposedly Drummond is a game time call due to unspecified illness. LeBron should just rest this game – Pistons have nobody playing lol
SIGN ME UP FOR THAT —-NOT SURE IF HORNETS GO FOR IT / PROBABLY HAVE TO THROW OUR PICK IN OR CEDI OR ANTE
(waves hand) Keep the Jedi
Kemba Walker for IT, Shump, and Rose?
I wonder if “Brinks” will be a Cavs sponsor next season.
<3
We send the brooklyn pick to Utah and swallow the Deng contract (waive with stretch?). http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=yahx7c27
As much as I like Ricky I think I’d rather have Clarkson
We need a guard that can defend and run offense. We have more than enough scoring.
anything with anonymous sources is just for entertainment. the reason this is all out now is because the team has sucked for the last month…..barely heard anything when team was winning big….thats just how it is. can’t imagine this game being very close, something tells me Cavs will come out guns blazing and have end of bench playing in entire 4th quarter.
IT needs to go. A chip on your shoulder can be a good thing or a bad thing. His apparent lack of humility and accountability make me think it’s a bad thing. He’s a long list of excuses. Man up, take the heat quietly and prove us all wrong in a month by playing solid ball. Instead you’re calling out your teammates and whining about not having your legs.
Maybe Lue is saving Frye? I would hate Lue less if this is true.
One trade scenario that almost came to fruition, as reported by ESPN and other outlets, would have sent Frye and Iman Shumpert to the Sacramento Kings for guard George Hill. Cavs coach Tyronn Lue was against including Frye in the Hill trade, league sources told ESPN, because he deems the stretch-5 too valuable to include in a move that does not result in a clear-cut improvement to Cleveland’s championship chances.
If those “league sources” have facts, that is the best thing we have heard from Lue all year, that he plans to play Frye when crunch time comes.
It is really hard to know if Lue knows what he is doing or not. On one hand, refusing to put JR on the second unit has looked real smart (for two days so far). But last year he definitely screwed up in cutting Liggins and playing DWill2 rather than DWill1. Hopefully he is figuring it out, and will put the best unit out there in the playoffs.
I agree Raoul. Imagine if we had LWill
This is exactly the kind of game the Cavs will blow since they should easily win.
One would think the Cavs could sleepwalk this game and still win, but thes guys are full of surprises…
predicted before these 2games we would be 1-1 at best–0-2 at worse—with pistons team pretty well depleted to the point MY MAN MORELAND MAY GET SOME MAIN MINUTES — I will change prediction—cavs go on 3 game win streak—119–101—-GO CAVS !!!
Some very hot takes along with the game intro, Carson. Nice job and agree with everything you wrote. That total lack of communication from the front office to the players on Love’s illness, and the players’ apparent indifference to even ask a trainer is startling. Altman and the players should both be ashamed.
Let’s hope the Cavs can put away the Pistons B squad early, get a lot of rest and then beat Miami in the b2b. Amazingly, the Cavs would then end January 7-7. In drama, the team is 0-14.
Great post. Cavs in theory should blow the Pistons out again…. half the team is getting a physical.
