Podcast 204: Ping Pong Balls, Hotcakes & Beelines to Hot Takes
2019-05-15Well… the Cavaliers weren’t able to pull off another NBA Lottery bonanza tonight… in fact, they fell all the way to fifth behind the Pelicans, Grizzlies, Knicks and Lakers. Whether you believe in karma or conspiracy theories, in the end it looks like New Orleans got a potential lifeline back to relevancy as the almost assured winner of the Zion Williamson sweepstakes. Yet, there may still be some sneaky good talent available in the five hole for newly minted head coach, John Beilein to impart wisdom to this summer.
To recap all of the Lottery shenanigans, as well as weigh in on the surprising and polarizing coaching hire, we jammed the podcast booth with three old men, your favorite millenial and his frisky, stereo-tipping canine. We fogged the glass for hours (we had a lot to cover), debating top five mock drafts, throwing down over the projections for Zion’s career, mixing it up over the coaching decision and much, much, much more. In a pod that easily went to four overtimes, EG relates his epic witnessing of Game 3 between the Blazers and Nuggets in Portland, Nate regales us with his own Pablo Torres story, Tom spins a massive yarn about his daughter’s confusingly overzealous softball coach, and David bodyslams us all with a pancake throwing wrestling metaphor… Seriously, you might be as old as Coach Beilein when you get to the end of this.
As always, check us out below, on Anchor.fm, Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher, Tunein, or Spotify.
BIGGEST CHANGE / MOVE BUCKS MADE WAS TO GET RID OF THE NOW “TOP ASSISTANT FOR THE LAKERS “—JASON KIDD—–GOOD LUCK WITH THAT LAKERS FANS
Yep. And it was not only addition by subtraction. Coach Bud is excellent. They went from overtrapping to try & get steals and giving up easy buckets (Kidd) to giving up nothing easy under Bud (no layups, no transition, no O boards).
How dumb do the Lakers look for letting Lopez go?
As for Reddish, he is a better defender now than Hood. And we did want to keep Hood. He turned down an extension to we cashed in the asset.
I think Reddish will be a better NBA player than Hood. Not a high bar.
And how smart do the Bucks look for putting together this roster?
The Raptors are no match for the Bucks. If they couldn’t steal a game where Lowry made 7 threes I don’t see how they win more than 1 game at home. I really like this Bucks team. They seem to be the best team to take down the Durant-era Warriors. 2017 Cavs were great also but very imbalanced. Historically great offensively mediocre at best defensively. This team is very good at both ends, plus it has the only player that can legit guard Durant.
I think it’ll go 6 or 7….Lopez isn’t getting 29 every game, and Siakam was not good…I certainly favor the Bucks, and I hope they win the title…
Same. Lopez was phenomenal. I don’t expect the same level of production. Siakam will be phenomenal at some point during this series. Kawhi has been incredible and I expect him to continue that despite the bucks d. But also I have been a bucks supporter as far as belief they will take the east and fandom since the early season.
I respectfully disagree. Lowry played the game of his life. He is due for a 6 point game. Siakam hasn’t shown that he can be a true difference maker in the playoffs yet. Gasol and Obama don’t want to shoot. Meanwhile, the Bucks have at least three players who can guard Kawhi and plenty who can go off. Maybe it won’t be Lopez next game but it could very well be Hill or Mirotic. They are on a completely different level.
Ibaka not Obama. Lol. But I guess that Obama doesn’t want to shoot either.
What?! Siakam was huge in the Philly and Toronto series. He had 20 or more 5/7 games and 3/5 against Orlando.
It’s possible the bucks shooting holds. I expect they’ll have some games where no one lights it up from deep.
I am not saying he isn’t good. It’s just that if you depend on Siakam’s offensive production to carry you to the Finals then I guess you are in trouble.
There’s something about the Bucks….I noticed after one of their good plays yesterday, one of their bench players did a chest bump celebration with the coach. They appear to be a cohesive unit, which is never a bad thing when a team is tested.

I listened to the entire Pod! I feel I deserve some kind of medal. My commute is just that long…
Someday Kai is going to be a great shortstop, with his amazing kick-save gets of ground balls.
HAHA! Nice job!
https://twitter.com/ChaseDownPod/status/1128754292364435456?s=19
Basically this. “But we don’t know what Cam might become! He might even become Rodney Hood!!”
That is a dumb tweet on a couple levels.
1) IIRC, we wanted to keep Hood. We offered him a deal. He declined it. So instead of losing him for nothing, we dealt him.
2) Reddish is better on D now the Hood is. Though not as good a shooter or offensive player.
I agree he’s not much like Hood, but he may never be as good an NBA player as Hood.
I thought it was funny and impated before I saw who it was by
The brook Lopez game….
Jesus. No one touche’d him. Awful call
Lopez turning it on…
Damn Lowry having one of his great playoff games as opposed to his dad’s.
Duds
Got a couple days off.
Bucks with four straight brain farts. George Hill looking like George Hill of not so fond memories.
This bucks team could have won multiple ships with LBJ 1.0.
Hell of a dime there from middleton
Mirotic such a huge get for them. It’s funny to think what NO could be if they’d had kept that group together.
I love this bucks team. They are very enjoyable.
Hope Bucks fans appreciate this team. You don’t get this vibe very often, and it can vanish quickly. Very likable team.
If this crowd is evidence, that’s a hell yes!
Bucks shooters warming.
This is a really good game. Can they sustain this intensity for the who series?
Raps falter with Kawhi on the bench.
Boy Lopez has made himself so much much money.
so, so much money
Lopez giving the Bucks a big lift…
Man. That was a hell of a quarter. Someone other than Giannis has to step up for the bucks. Connaughton is flying around out there setting guys up and everyone is missing. Middleton has to show up.
Feels like Kawhi is the best player in the game right now.
Reggie Miller regarding B. Lopez, “I didn’t know he had a repertoire.” Weird, considering Lopez was a great low post scorer before he was a stretch big.
Miller is an idiot
The Lakers NEED Cam Reddish…Lebron has never had a running mate with his dizzying combo of talent and potential…
No. 5: Cleveland Cavaliers — Joe Vardon (@joevardon) Cam Reddish, F, Duke After a collective *&^%!!! when Garland goes off the board to the Lakers, the Cavs take a deep breath and go with a player they’ve had their eye on for more than a year. He’s maybe 6-9 and skilled and can play on the wing. Yes, there are questions about Reddish’s competitive spirit and effort, but the Cavs see an upside that may be even steeper than his college teammates — Zion Williamson and R.J. Barrett. What this means is, you kind of know who Williamson and Barrett… Read more »
Barf. I just don’t see it. After spending the whole year gilding a locker room full of good guys, why would you get a low motor malcontent. These guys are almost all great athletes. What separates them is work ethic nba skills. Barrett shows poorly in both.
LOL….and he’s 6’8″ in shoes, was just measured today…
https://twitter.com/DraftExpress/status/1128723892309303307
No just no. Reddish isn’t ready. That could seriously affect his development.
Just to be clear. I’m not in favor of this either.
A lot of this is just rust by Milwaukee for being off a week. Think they be better in the second half.
Bucks shooters finally hitting. They’re gonna have to to loosen up the d for Giannis
Lopez killing the offensive boards…
Here’s here’s the rough framework of a trade of AD for Barrett. Thr future first here gets this done, though some of these guys get spun off to other teams.
http://tradenba.com/trades/S17VOEq2E
I think something like this is going to happen…
Me too. I think Griff smooths over the salt of going to a small market by getting Zion’s buddy and then spins those pieces into gold.
Powell making open threes is huge.
Some of the Bucks gun shy on open threes. Can’t be. Bledsoe passes open Trey to Giannis.
Webber is a dope.
He is not good as an analyst. Sort of us a second play by play guy.
This should be an amazing series…so many good players…
Shot clock didn’t reset.
Bucks shot with 28 seconds. Got rebound. Only 11 seconds on shot clock from what I saw. second shot clock. Not sure how that got missed.
Bucks throwing up some wild contested threes. Kawhi has become unstoppable in the mid-range when he is on.
Giannis does not have a ton of room. Bucks have to make their threes obviously, but Raptors doing a good job on 2nd and 3rd closeouts after ball swings.
Feel like the game plan for the bucks is self explanatory. Just are they good enough to counter. May be the story of their playoffs.
Giannis is just stupidly good, both sides of the ball…
Can’t wait for this game to begin. I think this series could decide the ship if KD isn’t healthy for the finals.
Also good Lowe preview on matchups this series.
http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/26743302/all-surprising-ways-giannis-kawhi-define-east-finals
Maybe Griff will want RJ to join up with Zion…
https://twitter.com/DraftExpress/status/1128799179684368385
I think he ends up in NY if the knicks know something about KY/KD or wait until it is a done deal as far as signing both post draft.
They probably wait to maximize cap space options.
Also, I bet this makes a Conley trade over the summer or next season highly likely…still think he’s be great in Utah.
I could see LA taking Hunter if they keep the pick. He is the most ready to play immediately.
But you know they want to trade it for a player.
Agreed… Hunter is KCP, but good LOL.
https://twitter.com/DraftExpress/status/1128747643377680384
Beat me to it. How do people feel about Tacko Fall? Don’t remember what second rounders we have, but I would take a flyer on him as a second rounder. I expect he might be in the upper third of the second round. He was impressive against Duke in my opinion and his measurables are absurd.
He also isn’t a twig as far as his frame.
Hard to say if he can play in the NBA. He’s projected 2nd round at best…I’d blow a 2nd on him, and I’m sure there are people in the league who feel the same…
Certainly he isn’t as mobile as a guy like Lopez (not that Lopez is crazy mobile), but the bucks have found great defensive success with Lopez playing a traditional drop back roll in p and r. Of course Giannis covering so much ground sort of makes that work….
Oh forgot about his ft shooting though. Oof.
Lopez led the league in # of shots contested.
Lopez has always been solid to very good as a rim defender. Bucks surrender a large amount of threes this season. Without Giannis don’t think they could be all that great with a drop back scheme with Lopez, though credit to Bud for recognizing Giannis and their other defenders could make that work really well against a lot of teams. If it is warriors bucks, I expect to see mostly small ball by the warriors with Green at center and Durant at PF (if healthy) to force Lopez out. Then again Bucks can counter with Giannis at center.
1) We do not have a second rounder.
2) No on Taco. He has nada in terms of game & mobility.
3) We have 5 bigs already: Love, LNJ, TT, Zizic, & Henson. I would prefer #6 as a guy who can hit a jumper. Let’s see what Henson has.
I am assuming TT might be gone. But yeah, his FT shooting alone sort of puts me off. I don’t remember how he did against Duke as far as FTs but the percentages basically make him non-playable unless he improved drastically.
I assume Zion is not participating in the combine, but I am curious what his measurables ends up being as far as height with shoes and wingspan. He looks as tall as Barrett, but a couple inches shorter than Reddish to me.
May cause him to drop a bit due to his wingspan…I still love him (at 10-15)
https://twitter.com/DraftExpress/status/1128725756878688259
I’d go with Hunter though… since he’s already been a Cavalier…
Hunter or Culver would be a good pick based on their defensive skills…
agreed… I think Hunter’s more of a sure thing with his shotmaking and finishing ability, but Culver has the higher ceiling with his playmaking and ball-handling.
Also, Hunter > Culver in the NCG.
I’m fine with either…hope to god the Cavs don’t try to be ‘smart’ and take Reddish or Bol or some such…
If they take Bol, then I will become a Laker fan… THAT’S how much I don’t want that guy…
https://twitter.com/ShamsCharania/status/1128746165216980993
Lakers, maybe?
Or suns. I think the kid has a pretty high ceiling. Decent floor just based on shooting. Not sure his is going to be much of a playmaker.
I don’t see the Lakers keeping that pick.
The Clarke comp is Josh Smith. Hope you can teach him to shoot.
I didn’t do my argument any favors there, did I?
I’d almost prefer Hachimara as a small ball 4. Kid is pretty stout and given when he started playing organized bball, projects to keep improving. Not like he has shown much of a volume jump shot, but certainly he can make an open three right now. Expect he will have a decent catch and shoot game sooner rather than later.
Dude couldn’t defend my mom
He has the physical tools to be ok in that department. Again I expect improvement. Kid didn’t start playing until way late. Also fits better as a small four in today’s nba. Clarke doesn’t project as a shooter in my mind.
Good comp IMO… I’m guessing Clarke has a far better attitude and bball IQ though playing at Gonzaga.
They are both from Gonzaga.
On Garland: Suns, Bulls, and Knicks are all possibilities.
Oh, I thought it was Josh Smith, who came straight from HS to the pros, and played for ATL.
Luckily the Cavs won’t need to try…
Saw this mock from a poster at CanisHoopus. I’m posting it here because it seems super plausible to me (other than Hawks taking Reddish, but who knows what front office is going to value him super highly…) 1. Pelicans – Zion Williamson, F, Duke 2. Grizzlies – Ja Morant, PG, Murray State 3. Knicks – R.J. Barrett, SG/SF, Duke 4. Wizards (from Lakers in Bradley Beal trade) – Jarrett Culver, SG/SF, Texas Tech 5. Cavaliers – De’Andre Hunter, F, Virginia 6. Suns – Darius Garland, PG, Vanderbilt 7. Bulls – Coby White, G, North Carolina 8. Hawks – Cam Reddish,… Read more »
Possible though I think LA goes all in on Davis, who they likely get if the Knicks and Boston don’t make godfather offers.
Yeah, LA is the wildcard in this draft…you have to assume their pick, or the guy they pick there, is getting traded somewhere, so it’s hard to tell for sure who will be around when Cavs pick. Also, if I were the Suns, I might take White instead of Garland, no idea who they value more there…
I wouldn’t touch Reddish. If the Cavs take him for some insane reason, I may take next season off…
Same. Reddish needs another year. Have a feeling his rookie year might be rough, which could affect his development negatively.
According to Ben Golliver at Washington Post, he spoke to a few high level people in the Pelicans camp last night and they unequivocally said they have no intention of trading AD to the Lakers or any other Western team for that matter… for whatever that info is worth…
My guess would be the Knicks… but I’m sure Boston will try…
Hmm that is interesting. Though I suspect if Ainge were to be stingy and NY didn’t offer a host of their younger players in addition to the pick, NO might reconsider. Still that piece of news put a smile on my face.
It really depends if the Knicks actually wind up with KD and Kyrie in FA… if they can swing that, they do still have young guys they could trade (Trier, Smith Jr., Mitchell Robinson) along with pick #3 and possibly next year’s #1 for AD…
Oh yeah, they could put forth the best offer in my mind, which of course depends on KY/KD. In that scenario, I would expect them to include most everything (3rd pick, Trier, Robinson, Smith JR, and maybe Knox), but if they were stingy and offered 3rd pick, Trier, and Knox, or 3rd pick Knox and Smith, that might not beat Lakers best deal.
Knicks have 2 Mavs 1sts (2021 & 2023) as well
#3, Knox, Robinson, DSJ + filler plus a Mavs pick or two is the best offer.
Wow, hadn’t heard that, but Golliver doesn’t usually just say stuff like that. Good news for me, since I want the Lakers to get stoned on the AD thing. Thanks for posting this, EG.
The current CBS mock as the Cavs taking Culver w/ #6, and Grant Williams with #26 Grant Williams | Tennessee | Jr | PF | 6-7 Williams is a two-time SEC Player of the Year who averaged 18.8 points and 7.5 rebounds in 31.9 minutes per game this season. The CBS Sports First Team All-American was so consistently productive that NBA scouts who previously questioned whether what he does will translate to the next level are starting to wonder why it won’t. It’s true that the 6-7 forward is neither a great athlete nor a serious threat from the perimeter.… Read more »
Meant to say Culver with #5.
Williams would be nice at 26. I think he has some buzz around him, so he may rise a bit. He’s been compared, probably unfairly, to Bray.
I think that would be a good haul. Saw that Hunter will be gone in both of the mocks posted.
I’m watching some Clarke highlights, and I like what I see. Can he shoot?
he’s a terrific finisher, and gets a lot of put backs/ bunnies, but not a good outside shooter. He may be the smartest defensive player in the draft. He essentially *was* the Gonzaga defense.
Not a shooter at all at this point. Profile is a smaller, more athletic, better rim protecting TT. He doesn’t really create his own shot in the post as far as I’ve seen. He needs a great playmaker spoon-feeding him.
No, he can’t…. doesn’t take 3s, doesn’t make enough of them. The hope is that his 69% FT % this past season means his form is good enough to develop an adequate shot.

softball story was hilarious…only thing those 6 year olds are going to learn from that man is what an ER looks like.
Just watched highlights for Clarke and I’m a fan. Great hops and timing for blocks, moves smoothly and makes some good passes. Only real problem is weak outside shot, which is definitely a concern in the NBA.
I liked this short interview at the draft with Beilein.
https://www.nba.com/cavaliers/video/teams/cavaliers/2019/05/15/2608230/1557884551906-190514-beilein-lottery-1-1-2608230
I had no expectation that we’d get the #1, but I’m a little sad, because I think Zion will be the most entertaining player in the NBA in short order.
I am curious why everyone is so down on Bol Bol? Dude moves really well and is huge and can block shots and even shoot. Presumably available long after the 5th pick, but everyone seems so dismissive.
Bol has the injury history, and his team was actually better defensively when he sat…I’d look at him with the Rockets pick, that’s about it. He’s one of the guys I expect to drop like a stone in the draft…
Kid only played 9 games in college. Not enough time to fault him for overall team defense. Plenty of rebounds and blocks and good FT shooter.
He’s a shot blocker, but doesn’t have the frame to body up anyone…he could be a future HoFer, I certainly don’t claim to predict these guy’s careers, but I’d be very leery about taking him, even with the Rockets pick…
I’m not down on Bol Bol, he’s a big man who can shoot and defend. Biggest concern for me is whether his body can handle the NBA.
The body is a big enough concern for me to pass. Those twig legs are worrisome to me. If he puts on any weight, what happens to his feet?
Bol Bol is terrible… and also a walking injury waiting to happen…
I love Clarke, too, maybe not as much as Nate. And I doubt he’s falling out of the lottery, EG. Tankathon currently has him at 11 to the TWolves, and he’d be a nice get for them there. (and a nice fit) Hot take: if he goes to the Wolves, he’ll be a way better player for them than Wiggins.
I may have exaggerated his placement… but I still contend he won’t go top 10, and with his inability to shoot, I’d say probably not top 15… Only way Cavs should take him is if he slides to 26…
NATE—-‘ NO HARM—NO FOUL “——-AT MY AGE ONE THING YOU LEARN IS NOT TO TAKE ANYTHING SERIOUSLY —NOT EVEN DEATH AND TAXES :)——-WILL THERE IS 1 THING THE BUCKEYES LOSING TO THAT TEAM UP NORTH
On Kyrie: A good friend of mine over here who has been a Boston fan since he was 10 messaged me when they got Kyrie. Message simply said “WOOHOO!!!”. I thought: 1) I could be a true friend and tell him down to brass tacks what to expect and completely poison the well 2) I could say he’s an amazing player, but has some real some downsides so be cautious but enjoy the ride 3) I could say nothing negative, “hey man congratulations, we are so bummed he and LBJ are both probably gone, but hey we got ring so… Read more »
Kyrie has been protected his entire career. For an entire season, on substance, he was definitely less valuable that undrafted Matthew Dellavedova. On style, he was a supermodel and Delly was a leper. That blinds so many people to his actual basketball worth. Making things more complicated, he does possess an elite ability to take and make difficult shots in isolation situations. He’s also a very good shooter (credit where it’s due) and ball handler. That elite skill to take and make difficult shots (which fueled Kobe’s undeserved reign as “best player on the planet”) has some value in pressure… Read more »

Just want to give a shout out to nomad who probably unfairly bore the brunt of my ageism. I’ve seen the light, and I will not judge people by age but by the content of their character. It was all in jest with no intent to harm.
I’m torn on what I want to see them do at 5. Hunter is plug and play and will probably be a solid NBA player but is there much upside? Culver really disappointed me when I watched him in the tourney and scares me a bit for a team in rebuild mode. Do they swing for the fences and look at upside and go with a guy like Reddish? I’d not be against going with him. When you have Zion and Barrett on a team and throw in a PG like Jones, I’m not sure Reddish scratched the surface of… Read more »
1/3 of the way thru this pod and it’s hands-down the most entertaining this season. The dog & the stereo. Phil Jackson pulling the strings. Kyrie = Arenas.
It just gets better
So right!
And thank you.
It’s one of the most fun we’ve ever done.
WHAT ABOUT WHITE WHO IS TALLER / MORE ATHLETIC / NO INJURY HISTORY ???
SOME VERY GOOD POINTS JASON ——ALOT OF WHO THE CAVS MAY DRAFT —MIGHT DEPEND ON TRADES / MOVES BEFORE THE DRAFT——WILL BE INTERESTING —AM SURE IT WILL CREATE ALOT OF INTEREST / CONVERSATION ON THIS BLOG
SOME MOCK DRAFTS –( THERE ARE MANY OF THEM )–GOOD FOR CONVERSATION —-HAVE THE LAKERS TAKING HUNTER AT # 4—IF THAT HAPPENS WHO DO THE CAVS TAKE / REALLY NOT SOLD ON CULVERS GAME –ESPECIALLY @ THE # 5 PICK
I’d maybe consider Garland then.
As far as off-season priorities:
1) Fill out Beilein’s staff with experienced NBA assistants & one of them needs to be a defensive guy.
2) Draft well at #5 & #26.
3) Scour the undrafteds for a gem.
4) Get something for JR.
5) Re-sign Nwaba.
6) Start making decisions on what to do on our expirings (TT, Knight, Clarkson, Delly, Henson): trade, keep, keep at discount, wait & see, or let walk. If a trade, do we take on more bad salary or not so much?
7) Do we want to keep our pick (top 10 protected) or not?
Yeah 6 is pretty important. How much value does TT have as an expiring?
I think he is at $19 million.
I HAVE ALREADY SURPASSED “BEE-LINE ” IN THE AGE FACTOR EVEN BEFORE LISTENING TO THE PODCAST : ) / : ( ———-HUNTER SEEMS LIKE THE SAFEST / BEST PICK AT # 5 ————SOME MOCK DRAFTS HAVE CAVS THINKING OF THE FUTURE WITH JAXSON HAYES —POTENTIALLY A “MONSTER ‘ IN THE POST—–THERE IS THAT SCARY WORD AGAIN “POTENTIAL “……………..CAN THANK THE SIXERS FOR THE LOTTERY DRAFT RULE CHANGE THAT HINDERED THE CAVS CHANCE AT THE TOP PICK/ 3 PICKS : ( …………ALTHOUGH I AGREE THERE WAS A NEED FOR A CHANGE WITH THE LUDICROUS TANKING BY TEAMS
Well, so much for the quick rebuild.
On the wing, I think Hunter > Culver > Reddish. Though Cam may have the highest ceiling. At guard I like Garland > White. Though White is a better fit with Sexton.
#5 > #8!
Haven’t listened yet. Hoping to hear the theory that I just came up with and nobody else could have ever thought of this: David Griffin manages to turn the #1 pick into the #4 pick and Lebron, AND signs Kyrie Irving. Retires as GOAT front office man.
Would he then take JR? That would make him GOAT.
Zion a bust….is the wildest hot take in 20 years.
