Live Thread: Cavs vs Hawks
2020-02-12We’ve missed a few recaps lately, and while two of them were nailbiting losses to the Thunder and Raptors, the most recent was an obliteration at the hands of the Clippers. Cleveland was pounded 133-92, the Cavs’ worst home loss, ever. More embarrassing? The Clippers were missing their best player another starter: Kawhi Leonard and Patrick Beverly. It’s worth nothing a few inescapable conclusions about the Cavs.
- While older teams do well with more rest, younger teams, especially these Cavs fall apart with extended breaks between games. Playing at least every other day seems to get the Cavs in a rhythm that they seem impossible to recreate when they’ve got extended time off. I’m very wary of the first game after the All-Star break.
- Darius Garland, after some ok stretches this year has been abjectly awful recently. He’s not good at anything. The closest he comes to being not awful is his 5.8 assists per game to 2.6 turnovers, and 37% from three in the last three games. But he’s shooting just under 40% from the floor. When combined with the differently but also flawed Sexton, it’s an utter disaster and a huge reason the Cavs have lost 13 of their last 14. The pair combined to go 7-24 against the Clips. And let’s not even talk about defense. The teams looked like they were in different leagues.
- Andre Drummond probably isn’t the answer. While he looked like a real honest-to-God NBA player against the Clips with a 19/14/3 line, he got waxed along with everyone else. I’m very wary of his freedom to shoot threes even though he went 2-3 on the game. It brought his season total to 3-24. It’s a double edged sword for Cleveland. If Drummond develops a reliable three point shot over the rest of the season, he probably can opt out and sign somewhere lucrative. If he doesn’t, then he’s gonna kill the Cavs on the floor by taking the shot. Simlarly: 1-2 Tristan Thompson Sunday.
- Kevin Porter Junior passes the eye test, and should probably move into the starting lineup sooner than later. I’m not sure who he replaces though. The Garter or Sexter backcourts both sound a bit scary, and Porland and Porton both sound dumb. God. We’re picking backcourts based on nameology. That’s a low bar.
- Why do I feel like Drummond is going to kill Kevin Love’s game?
- See above for Larry Nance.
- The Cavs have a lot of negative defenders, and their worst ones start. Andre Drummond isn’t going to fix that.
Anyway, we’ll see who wins tonight’s tank battle between the Hawks and Cavs. Bembry, Labasierre, and Capela will all be out for the Hawks while Dedmon looks to get his first start in his return to the Hawks. Kevin Love is out with an achilles injury tonight (WTF!?) and obviously Ante and Dylan. At least I get to see Nance play with Drummond. Let the tank battle commence.
DRUMMOND!!!
O looks good…. Hawks D just that bad
More flat-footed D than the Cavs. That’s saying something.
another nice contest Garland!
Curious if Dre’s presence is encouraging the youngsters to move the ball.
DG WITH THE FINISH!
Nice defensive play Garland!
Yezus Garland. Just a wide open layup miss.
Made up for it.
Sexton with a tough shot!
Larry triple
nifty pass Cedi, LNJ gets the foul
I’m hoping Dre is feeling slighted by Detroit and the league for their lack of interest and he goes on a tear. Going all in on small ball seems like a regular season gimmick to me. Come crunch time you need a gritty enforcer if not a number of them.
Really wish the Cavs would start KPJ and have DG/ Sexton come off the bench. KPJ may well be better than either Sexton or Garland.
Porter is absolutely better and he’s not even close to his ceiling.
I think Garland could still blow up. Porter is better right now.
DG and Sexton moving the ball really well, 4 assists each.
KPJ with 3 assists as well! Kids are growing!
Cavs bigs are absolutely dominating the game, Drummond, TT, and LNJ.
TT playing against bench players now, Dre might be the best thing that’s happened to him.
SEXTON KOBE ASSIST! TT WITH A DOMINATING HALF!!!
Cavs cold-ish from 3, but dominating the boards and moving the ball well on offense.
That was some great defense by Garland and Sexton~!!!!
If Dre stays are we a playoff team?
Hah. Let’s get a few games under our belt.
Next year, with youth improvement, Dylan Windler’s return/debut (and doing well), a decent draft choice, a couple good bargain signings…lots of ifs, lots of hope…
But fightimg for a 7-8 seed next year with Drummond is at least worth considering..
WHAT A PASS DG TO NANCE!!!!
I know the Hawks are terrible, but Drummond looking way more comfortable…
yeah, obviously were way too hype against the Clips
Ohmigod. Fast break of the year! Drummond to Garland to Nance!
Dre billy ball!
Bully
Drummond totally dominant against this team.
that was a BS call, Garland can’t push anybody.
If not for Garland’s aimless shots and turnovers then this would’ve been a hell of a half.
great play design, just didn’t hit the open 3
Like this Cavs unit…
Well this is a fun surprise! Hawks on Vacation already while the Cavs came to play.
KPJ TO LNJ!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT A PASS!!!!!!!!!
I continue to be impressed by KPJ.
starting to get a lot more playmaking opportunities with the 2nd unit.
Garland starting to get that floater working!
DRUMMOND BULLY BALL!
Strong move TT! What a pass KPJ!
MCKINNIE ONE MAN WRECKING CREW!
TT TAKING OVER!!!!!!! THEY OVERPLAYED THE 3PT SHOT LMFAOOOOOOO
TT playing with enthusiasm…
TT TWO IN A ROW!!!!!!!!
TT taking over!
TT going KD from deep…
TT FOR THREE!!!!
EXUM TO KPJ!!!
Lol…KPJ with monster dunk…
not a good play KPJ, didn’t attack and settled for a bad shot.
ooh great pass Sexton, but TT can’t convert LOL
Terrible pass Sexton, but TT bails him out!
Bench guys are absolutely demolishing the ATL bench.
Reddish will get you a fine lottery pick.
EXUM TO SEXTON FOR THREE!!!!
KPJ AND 1!!!!!! STRENGTH TO FINISH!
Sexton blow by!!!! TT with the extra effort!1!!
nice drive Exum!
Sexton on the blow by!
nice drive Sexton!
nice patient drive DG! draws the foul
WHAT A FEED KPJ TO TT!
Wow, Porter, sweet pass to TT!
LNJ DRAINS THE 3!
DG DROP OFF TO TT!!
nice floater KPJ
bad TO Drummond
too much passing.
Trae Young will probably be a good NBA player one day, but he mostly blows now. He reminds me so much of his last year at Oklahoma. Big stats, garbage team.
good onball defense Cedi! forced a tough shot!
Sexton kobe assist! Drummond great hustle
nice vision Cedi, nice finish DG!
what a block Drummond!
AFTER READING ALL THAT– ALL I CAN SAY IS ………….” MORE BEER PLEASE “…AND THE GAME HASN’T EVEN STARTED
God this preview of the game sums up exactly how I feel about this current Cavs squad: aimless and utterly depressed. Let’s see a glimmer of hope somewhere tonight!
yes, sadly, the cavs will rue the day the drafted darla garland at #5..maybe not an anthony bennett. but not that far behind..
