Live Thread: Hawks @ Cavs
2015-11-21The Atlanta Hawks face the Cavs tonight at 7:30. This game will be on FSO. The Cavs are dealing with some injury issues. Timofey Mozgov and Mo Williams are both unavailable for the the game, along with Kyrie Irving. This bumps Matthew Dellavedova and Tristan Thompson into the starting lineup tonight.
The Hawks are also confronting some injuries. Jeff Teague looks to be a game time decision.
Jeff Teague (ankle) won’t start, but he’ll warm up and Budenholzer is hopeful he can play tonight
— Jason Lloyd (@JasonLloydABJ) November 21, 2015
Kent Bazemore is also out this game. The Hawks starting lineup looks to be Dennis Schroeder, Kyle Korver, Thabo Sefolosha, Paul Millsap, and Al Horford.Â
The Hawks were the Eastern Conference darlings last year getting the number one seed for the playoffs, but their lack of a super star to match up with LeBron James in the Eastern Conference Finals was their undoing, as were minor injuries. They seem to be confident in the teams’ current structure though. They stood strong during the offsesason and tried to keep the team together. DeMarre Carroll was the only guy who left, and they added Tiago Splitter.
Atlanta is second in the league for assists, dishing out 26.1 per game. The Cavs currently sit at fifth in that category getting 24.2 a night.
Paul Millsap is their leading scorer getting 18.1 points a night. He’s also their leading rebounder averaging 9.2 boards a game.
Things to Watch
-Last season, DeMarre Carroll was the Hawks’ stopper. He typically covered whoever the opponents’ best player was on the wing. He was backed up by Thabo Sefolosha, although Sefolosha missed much of last season with injuries. Now, Thabo is the only wing stopper, and that’s just about all he can do on the court. He will be tasked with guarding LeBron. Paul Millsap will also spend some time on the King. If those two slow LeBron, will the King settle for jumpers, or will he move off the ball to get some easy looks? LeBron should also look to get Millsap and Sefolosha into foul trouble early, because outside of those two the Hawks have no one who can stand up to him.
-Al Horford and Paul Millsap are high functioning offensive players in the post. Kevin Love has had his troubles dealing with post behemoths this season, so it will be interesting to see how David Blatt decides to cover those two bigs. With Timofey Mozgov out of the rotation, the Cavs are going to have to lean on Andy early if TT or Love gets into foul trouble.
-The Hawks pass the ball a ton. The Cavs will need to stay focused, as Kyle Korver is going to be on the move looking for the 3-ball all night. Millsap can step out and hit some 3s too. Schroder is hitting just 33% from deep, but he’s taking nearly four of them a game. This team is hitting 9.1 3-pointers a night.
-With how much the Hawks pass, the Cavs might try and play the passing lanes more. They need to be responsible if they do this because the Hawks can make them pay. They find the open man more often than not.
-If Paul Millsap gets going, the Cavs need to place TT on him. TT shut him down during the playoffs last year. See the headline picture if you’re having trouble remembering what TT did to poor Millsap.
Prediction
The Cavs should be able to pull this game out if they remain focused. While the game against the Bucks was about being physical, this game is going to be about execution. The Cavs need to take care of the ball, and remember that the Hawks are looking to create an open shot. They don’t need to bite on every pick and roll. I’m picking the Cavs, 112-92.
Reporter from China .. asking about Delly. He said he played on sore leg
Even China is on the Delly train.
I feel like Blatt has totally vindicated his ability to use the bench early this year. Last year we questioned if he was uncomfortable going deep into his bench. He’s going 9-10 deep with 3 starters missing
Blatt is frustrated with injuries to game plan next game
@mcten: David Blatt with a great line about LeBron subbing himself out in the 3rd Q: “He thought we were playing hockey”
Blatt: I thought we didn’t play right for parts of the game. Bad shots. Poor execution. Losing our way getting back on defense. We through a lot of bad passes. We stopped recognizing match ups. We played really well at some points, then helter skelter. Happy with the win, but gotta be much better.
Blatt doesn’t seem that pleased with win.
@CavsFredMcLeod: David says a lot to be learned from tonight..”there were part of the game we didn’t play right”
I love it!
He Didn’t like some of the jacked up 3’s and he criticized Lebron’s behavior. That’s a first.
Lebron apologized for blowing a gasket. It happens
Unfinished business is the reason for not coming out during line up calls.
@AmicoHoops: Cavs have now won 32 straight at home when scoring 100 or more.
Great game guys. Kev is player of the game.
Delly continues his campaign to catch Steph in plus minus and steal the MVP. +27 in a 12 point win
Steph is the one catching up with all his ridiculous performances.. Delly got this locked
I think it’s amazing how Delly turned the Atlanta Hawks into a dirty bunch out for blood by the third quarter.
The Pacers won 123-86 VS the Bucks, now why da hell couldnt the Cavs do that on Thursday ?
Much danger ninja with the dagger jam!
Corrcecting my self, Ninja ending da game da right way lol
Ninja throwdown! To punctuate the win. Gets a big smile from JR leaving the court.
That was a nice Ninja Dunk!!!!!!!
JR how did you make that shot!
JR ending the game the right way, I screamed OHHHHH
Wow! That was an incredible shot by JR!
Here comes Kaun!!!!!
We’ve gotta defend better on da fast break, ATL has 13 on da break and we only have 4 (those two scores from LBJ and KLOVe at the beginning of the third.
Iman and Kyrie video bombing Allie Clifton and Jeff Phelps.
3 CAVS (T.T./ LEBRON / LOVE ) WITH DOUBLE-DOUBLES —–LEBRON 2 ASSISTS SHY OF TRIPLE DOUBLE
We want Kaaauuuunn!!!
Time to give Lebron and Kev a rest now. We got this in hand..manage the minutes
It should be garbage time soon.
I think we can call this one over.
Korver tried the Reggie Miller move and cried when the refs didn’t blow the whistle.
Delly nails the semi-hook floater from the baseline.
WHOA DELLY!!!!!!!!
Tony Brothers ladies and Gents!!!!
Love got kneed in the nuts and gets called for the foul?
Telling us you missed the call two days later is starting to get really old. The officiating in this league is horrendous way too often…
Tony Bros is the worst. He’s not even consistent, other than being consistently bad.
Of all the calls to get backwards, a knee to the groin. That was a Mike Tirico call.
Teague is a bit of a flopper.
Atlanta is a whole team of flippers. They are one of the softest teams in the NBA.
Horford and Millsap is 6-22 (27%) in this game , great work bigs
That was sweet 2-man game by Bron and AV.
Yes, very nice.
Cavs are winning by 19 and LeBron is playing like garbage.
Maybe not garbage 11 rebounds and 7 assists but not his best
JFJ with a nice block.
Good to see Bron stepping up on the rebounding while we miss Timo.
Blatt must not trust Kaun much.
I suspect Kaun will play in this game still. Maybe with 2 minutes left
nice to see the ft % up and double doubles for Love and James. TT soon
MORE BAD NEWS IN COLUMBUS——ZEKE ELLIOT PUBLICLY CRITICIZES COACHES PLAY CALLING ( ONLY 12 CARRIES ) SAID HE IS GOING PRO ( HE WAS REGARDLESS OF TODAYS PLAY CALLING )—COULD BE UGLY NEXT WEEK UP NORTH
They should sit his ass for the remainder of the season.
I was pissed for him. It made no sense at all.
The play calling was awful in that game, but a player shouldn’t be criticizing the coaches in the media.
Yeah that doesn’t help but play calling was off for sure and Barrett looked slow, hungover?
He’d be crazy not to go pro. He should be a round 1 pick
I never thought I’d say this, but I love JFJ!
Ey ey Lebron with some shimmy moves lo, I like how we started this quarter
Champ comes off the bench and rains threes like its nothing.
LeBron right down Euclid!
Lead back to 19.
Relax guys
– James jones
Thank You JFK, times 2
JFJ Alert!!!!!!!
Jones with the three is nice to see
Yeah James freaking jones….
Too many turnovers that quarter
@FearTheSword: Didn’t have much choice because of Delly’s fouls, but a little too much Cunningham (who had great moments!) in that quarter
I dont think the Cavs have played a complete game so far, maybe only that Memphis game ? We need more consistency from this team on both ends of the floor
Health is a big issue with that.
You dont need health to take care of the ball and defend
Health dictates consistency with line ups.
Cavs lost focus in that quarter. LeBron should get a lot of the blame.
that 7-0 in the beginning of the quarter seems sooooooo long ago, my gosh such an ugly quarter
What is LeBron doing?
Cavs had a 20 plus point lead.
Sloppy passes. Come on Cavs! Get it together.
@tomhaberstroh: The 76ers are shooting 32 percent and destroying the Heat. What in the what.
That was a bit of a late whistle, no?
BALL DONT LIE!!!!!
I missed the technical on JR. what happened?
He complained and the refs hate him
They REALLY hate him.
Cavs getting sloppy now. Get that focus back. I want to see Kaun and Harris in the fourth.
Did JR sleep with all of the refs wives?
Another double double for Love
6 TO’s in the quarter. 10 for the game.
Love strong in the post to break the Hawks’ run.
At least pick up the D. Starters should get the 4th quarter off.
Cavs having a Buckeye implosion.
Cavs getting sloppy as ATL goes on a 9-0 run.
That was plain stoopid by LeBron. This Hawks team is nowhere near the Hawks team of last season.
