Live Thread: Cavs @ Jazz (#BackToBacksAreWhack)
2016-03-14The Cavs finish up their four game run through the West Coast with one last stop in Salt Lake tonight against the Utah Jazz on the second night of a… you guessed it… back-to-back. For all the talk of the League trying to reduce the frequency of back-to-backs during the NBA schedule, this will be the Cavs’ 14th double-dip so far (with three more to go before the season comes to a close), and fourth just in the last two weeks. On the plus side, Cleveland has a 9-4 on the second nights of back-to-backs. They’ve had some of their worst defeats (the Portland game comes to mind), but also some of their biggest victories (like San Antonio) in them. On the minus side, it can’t be easy to get up for games on consecutive games… especially at the end of a roadtrip, against a team that is struggling to make the playoffs. Maybe the schedule-makers, or Adam Silver will find ways to trim the number back next year, but for now the Cavs will need a good effort to avoid one last potential pot-hole on the road before heading back home.
Fortunately, LeBron has fared pretty well on the second night of back-to-backs in his career…
Tonight will be @KingJames 224th game on 2nd night of BTB..his average of 27.8 is slightly higher than career norm..only Kobe 28.1 is higher

And, the Cavs have built some terrific momentum over the first three games of this trip through most of California. Hopefully, they can continue their red-hot shooting from beyond the arc, so they don’t have to deal as much with the “Stifle Tower” Rudy Gobert in the paint. One guy they definitely won’t have to worry about is Jazz star and leading scorer, Gordon Hayward, who is going to miss this one with plantar fasciitis.
The Cavs probable starting lineup will be: Kyrie Irving, J.R. Smith, LeBron James, Kevin Love and Tristan Thompson (who reportedly gets the start tonight). For the Jazz: Shelvin Mack, Rodney Hood, Joe Ingles, Derrick Favors and Rudy Gobert.
Game starts at 10:30 p.m EST (for you night owls)/7:30 p.m. on the west coast. All the action will be broadcast on ESPN and Fox Sports Ohio, and can be heard on WTAM 1100.
Prediction: Weary from the back-to-back at the end of a long road trip, the Cavs let the Jazz play things close until the second half. Cavs find a way to win and head back to Cleveland for some home cooking 99-87.
Nice look from Kyrie. Almost Kraken like
I’ve seen 40x worse screens set by every player on the Warriors and it never gets called…
Oh, for sure… but he’s so big and slow, that it makes him an easy target…
Moz seems to get called for moving screens a lot lately…
Wow! Irving with a block!

That is BS! How is that interference?
fg% 26% That is UGLY!!
Yo Kyrie is playing some defense right now! recognize
Hey Love made a 3.
Sorry daspec90…. Just have mobile and I hate using Internet on here. I miss the data from Vegas tonight, but what I can tell u is Vegas had cle a4pt favorite at opening, and the line blew up to 7. So, my guess is smart money is on a Utah cover/win.
Thanks! I was curious what the gamblers were thinking.
FINALLY!!
What Jazz doing to Cavs defense right now…
I’d throw this game from the tip. They haven’t adjusted to the altitude and its second of back to back. Go ahead and lose it and fly back to cleveland. Hell, don’t even land in Utah.
What defense?
Take out Love and JR and put in Frye and Shump.
Jazz aren’t playing particularly well, Cavs just playing worse…
I mean, it’s hard to get up for a game like this. But Toronto lost tonight s there should be some motivation to widen the gap on them.
We routinely blow opportunities to widen the gap…
Hell, they would suspend a month for that. Sasha needs to start a fight with the beer man like NOW!
Or they can slack off and still maintain their lead because Toronto lost.
Cavs need energy. Something. Can someone throw a punch at the mascot to wake everyone up?
JR?
Cavs guards are getting TORCHED…
I think Lue should consider putting Shump in the starting line up.
I don’t love our starting line up.
Okay, what I’d miss? My normal comments would have been that LBJ shouldn’t be playing a high altitude back to back and this is exactly the type of game we’ll lose – a sneaky good defensive team missing its starters (Hello, Memphis!).
LeBron started hot and cooled off. Poor 3-point shooting for the team. Trouble handling the Utah bigs on D. Rodney Hood went off in the first half.
Another great defensive conversation at halftime by Longabardi I see… /s
Cavs look a step slow.
If Cavs don’t snap out of this, it’s a loss.
I dunno. Should Lue substitute some players? The starters don’t look motivated.
Love is useless to us tonight.
Gobert DUNK FAIL!
This is a die by the 3 kind of night!
I’ve always thought that the high altitude likely changes the 3pt shot effectiveness if you’re not used to it. The ball sails a touch more, and the farther out you are, the more it alters it. I wonder if stats back this up at all.
How was that foul not called… just horrific…
Kevin Love with an interpretive dance.
Guy had his jersey pulled. That was a blown call..
Oh. Didn’t see that.

I always forget to right click and “open in new tab” and then I lose this page.
Cavs center Timofey Mozgov has cost himself millions with his poor play this season, Jason Lloyd of the Akron Beacon Journal opines. Mozgov, who is making $4.95MM this season and will head into unrestricted free agency, has been dealing with unspecified personal problems that have contributed to his lack of on-court production, Lloyd continues. Mozgov has been particularly ineffective defensively, which has led to a drop in playing time and teammates yelling at him after breakdowns, Lloyd adds. “I’ve got a lot of [stuff] in my head,” Mozgov told Lloyd. “I’m not going to share it to nobody. You ask… Read more »
He is very private and has said this more than once to reporters
That approach isn’t working. Hope they can persuade him to talk to a sports psychologist.
It’s snowing there!!! We have sunny spring days here and it’s March!
I would like to think that the Cavs win this one, but I wouldn’t bet much money on it.
They can do it but they really have to dig in mentally!! Those BIGS always give Cavs fits
Fun fact: Utah 28 1/2 games behind the Warriors.
LOL i laughed out loud, great comment

Stop Hood, win the game.
Also, what happened to LBJ the last few minutes of the half? Missing shots and losing the ball right and left…
Pre-gamed with Cols. Finally caught up to him
If you say it again, you’re banned… (just kidding, lol)
Love is -7, and has 2 points. He needs to step it up.
Timo’s hands get infinitely more reliable when you pass it above his chest
That’s an astute point, Scotch…
and yet, the Cavs love throwing him bounce passes
At his knees.
Except Delly!
JR just loves throwing horrible passes at Lebron
https://vine.co/v/iwvxYbQ6Qxm
Good give and go with Moz and Delly… AND a steal from MOZ!
I know!! and then Lebron lost the ball after a slippery pass from Jr.
aww man. Cavs can’t get out of their own way
Moz catch and finish! Decent hands there.
LBJ has missed his last five shots…

JR is becoming our draymond green. Lots of little things, lots of emotion…it’s great. He should be a Cav til he retires
He’s my favorite Cav. I can’t believe I just typed that.
Sort of like World B. Free — a longtime knucklehead who finally gets serious.
On the bright side, Kyrie needs some love for his effort on both ends
Did you guys see JR before that time out telling everyone to get in the huddle? love it
Finally a 3. We have to get back to the off ball cutting we showed in the last 5 games. Cannot rely on the 3 alone. We are not the warriors, too streaky. Need to get easy open layups and dunks through off ball cutting and hitting cutters with the pass.
Nice from JR. Wanted the 3, wanted the dunk, made the floater.

halftime cannot come soon enough.
RJ knocks it down… since KLove is unwilling… At least he made a good pass…
https://vine.co/v/iwvUJaVxpdd
Finally we hit a 3! I’m glad Love passed it up.
Kyrie and Love a combined 3-14. Gross
Sorry TP… Love just got Vined…
God d&@m Love kick it out. Come on, making it really hard to defend you.
Be back in a minute. Need to attend a meeting Let’s go Cavs!
Love looks tired. Maybe he needs to rest the second game of a back-to-back until the playoffs?
Good lord we suck against scrubs
Love looks so un-athletic out there
He always does.
I’m still sticking by my Love for Favors trade idea.
Man Love stinks tonight.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0LAs7X5ybE
O.K. that is good. How long have you been sitting on that one?
Way too long… ;)
KLove with the concrete pylon defense… smh…
http://www.gaddisandsoninc.com/wp-content/gallery/park-site-furnishings/pylon-post-concrete-repair-before-after.jpg
Bad defense by Love there.
Weren’t we all taught in like first grade that you should follow your shot cuz you know best how it will miss? I know we gotta get back but still…
Rodney Hood going off so far…
Soooo many threes… and not many falling…
I wonder if there is any explanation for why the Cavs (or any team) can be so dialed in one night and then so off on another?
Man, Love is horrible from 3!
Yeah. I agree, regrettably.
My wife: “Wait. They have actual cheerleaders, and not..(awkward pause)” Me: “basically strippers?” My Wife: “…yeah.” Me: “Well it’s Utah. They’re pretty conservative.” My wife: “Well it’s nice to see there’s a future for actual cheerleaders in the NBA. At least in Utah.”
Lol thank you for sharing some sanity
https://vine.co/v/iwvIxzhjuFX
The LBJ layup in the 1st Q was dirty as well.
Much better ball movement these last few games. Even the ISOs are the result of switches by the D.
Totally agree. The passing has been great.
Ok. Goodnight all. Hope they win!!
Isn’t it like 9 there?
What? They’re in your time zone!
Lol… almost
Delly got Burnt. Frye got Frye’d. Cols got Baked!
Shump should’ve shot that three
